Video: Jay Leno examines the bonkers 1910 Brooke 'Swan Car' at Pebble Beach
Filed under: Classics, Videos, Celebrities, India, Specialty How much oddball can you squeeze into one car? We probably haven't reached the limit yet, but just after the turn of the 20th century a man did his best to find out. A wealthy Scottish engineer named Robert "Scotty" Nicholl Matthewson, living in Calcutta, bought a 30-horsepower Brooke sedan in 1910 England, and had a maker of steam-powereed fairground rides chisel a monumental and highly ornate wooden swan's body to cover the engine. Then he took it back to India. He could win an award for weird right there, but that's only the beginning. In an era of awesomely expensive coachbuilt cars, a Brooke was more than thrice the cost of a Rolls-Royce. To make sure the Swan's other amenities befit the marque, Matthewson had a multi-note, exhaust-driven horn installed that he could play on a keyboard in the rear seat, but an even more startling way to clear the roads ahead was the swan's beak, which emitted a jet of scalding water onto anyone in the way. Other features: glowing eyes, Indian silk upholstery, plenty of gold leaf, brushes to keep the wheels clean while moving, and an "orifice" round back that would deposit whitewash on the roads. Because sometimes a swan's gotta go. The car was such a hit in town that it was bought by the Maharaja of Nabha, who had a miniature replica of it made called the Cygnet. Jay Leno checked it out with Evert Louwman, the man who owns the museum in The Hague where the Brooke Swan Car is displayed, while at Pebble Beach. You can watch the story of it below.Continue reading Jay Leno examines the bonkers 1910 Brooke 'Swan Car' at Pebble BeachJay Leno examines the bonkers 1910 Brooke 'Swan Car' at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 20:00:00 EST. Britain's Trident Iceni Grand Tourer headed to Salon Privé... on diesel power
Filed under: Biodiesel, Diesel, MPG, UK After looking at the new Trident Iceni Grand Tourer, it's obvious that Europe gets all the cool cars. Sexy styling? Check. Amazing performance? Yup. Torquey, fuel-efficient diesel engine? Unequivocally, yes! This built-to-order coupe apparently has it all for the performance enthusiast who wants it all, and the car will be on display at the Salon Privé 2012 next month in London. Starting at £75,000 (roughly $119,000 USD), the Iceni Grand Tourer is a small two-seater sports car that looks more like a concept car than anything else, with a split open top almost like the original Batmobile, a dark, matte exterior and a contrasting bright-red interior. Overall, the handsome design reminds us a bit of the Pontiac Solstice. Only in this car's case, it's like a Solstice with premium touches and a Duramax diesel under the hood... on steroids. A quick rundown of the car's spec sheet reads like a supercar, with performance numbers that include a 0-60 time of just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of almost 200 mph from a 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine that can run on almost anything, including biodiesel, mineral diesel, palm oil and linseed oil. In standard form, this engine produces 430 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque, but even more impressive is the fact that 700 of these lb-ft are available at just 980 rpm. At this low engine speed, the Trident Iceni geared to run at 70 mph. The company says that's good enough for almost 70 mpg and can give the coupe a driving range of more than 2,000 miles on one tank. Those wanting even more get-up-and-go can choose the optional upgrade that brings 660 hp and 1050 lb-ft of torque to the table. There is no word as to how much this sporty roadster weighs, but this kind of power would make a school bus fun to drive.Scroll down for the official press release.Continue reading Britain's Trident Iceni Grand Tourer headed to Salon Privé... on diesel powerBritain's Trident Iceni Grand Tourer headed to Salon Privé... on diesel power originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 19:31:00 EST. Video: A closer look at the Red Skull's 1942 V16 Coupe from Captain America
Filed under: Concept Cars, Videos, Design/Style The V16 Hydra Schmidt Roadster is the kind of bolide that makes kids rather be villains than do-gooders. It was the personal carriage of Johann Schmidt who, as alias Red Skull, was Adolf Hitler's head of weaponry, Captain America's nemesis and one of "the greatest threats to humanity." In his spare time as a member of the Hydra terrorist group, Red Skull had access to alien technology that went into lots of motorized Hydra goodies, but his roadster earned its title of fastest fictitious road car in the world from nothing more exotic than a ginormous airplane engine. In the "real" world of movies, Red Skull's movie car for Captain America was one of the concepts created by Daniel Simon, a former Volkswagen Group concept car designer who left the nest to make fantastical things. Underneath bodywork cued off of the Mercedes-Benz 540K, Mercedes G4 four-wheel drive and vintage Duesenberg and Bentley design language is a V8 dragster engine from Ford, all settled on a truck chassis and truck wheels. Our suggestion for a Time Waster of the Day is to check out the rest of Simon's site, where he scoops on more of his work like the light cycles from Tron Legacy, the Lotus LMP2 livery and the Bugatti Veyron Hermès. His tagline is "Style For All Galaxies." Right on. Report: 'AXI' dropped from NYC taxis
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Marketing/Advertising, Specialty, Design/Style Oh, how we love "rebranding." From the stumblebums at The Gap to the desperate deckhands on the Microsoft Titanic, needlessly changing your logo is all the rage these days, so we shouldn't be surprised to see the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission join in on the fun by eliminating the word "taxi" from the city's cabs. That's right, while they'll still be yellow and hailing one will still prove challenging for out-of-towners, New York's taxis will now be identified by a yellow capital "T" in a black circle.According to The New York Times, besides their "axi," cabs will also be losing their passenger door fare panel - the information will be displayed on the cab's video screen instead. The subtle shift in design is the result of New York's Taxi of Tomorrow program, in which the Nissan NV200 was picked to become the city's exclusive taxi vehicle, starting next year. The t-in-a-circle logo was created by Smart Design. David S. Yassky, the Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman, responded to questions about whether people would be able to identify the new cabs by saying, "Even the greenest of greenhorns will know that it's a taxicab," according to the report.'AXI' dropped from NYC taxis originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 18:59:00 EST. Confirmed: Hyundai Veloster getting summer tire option
Filed under: Performance, Hatchback, Hyundai During an event in Park City, Utah today, Hyundai Motor America President and CEO John Krafcik confirmed to Autoblog that the funky Veloster hatchback will be getting a new summer tire option. "We could do better in terms of tires [and] we had always planned to have a summer option," Krafcik told us. The higher-performance rubber - Michelin Pilot Super Sport 215/40ZR18 tires - offers substantial performance increases compared to the current car's Kumho Solus KH25 all-seasons. In skid pad lateral acceleration, Krafcik told us that the Michelins are good for 0.94 gs compared to 0.82 with the Kumhos. What's more, stopping distance from 60 miles per hour is now reduced to 121 feet (compared to 135) and wet braking from 60 mph happens in 136 feet (compared to 158). Both the naturally aspirated and turbocharged Veloster models will be available with these grippier rollers (providing you spec the base car with the already optional 18-inch wheels). Hyundai will offer the Michelins as a $1,200 standalone option beginning this fall.Hyundai Veloster getting summer tire option originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 18:31:00 EST. Chinese company's stake in A123 puts U.S. trade secrets at risk, execs say
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, China, USA Paranoia or well-founded fears? Some U.S. auto executives are expressing concern that the Chinese Wanxiang Group's investment in struggling lithium-ion battery maker A123 Systems may put trade secrets at risk. China may get first dibs on lithium-ion battery technology advancements if Wanxiang Group moves some of A123's research and development operations to China, Reuters reports, citing executives that declined to be identified (but Bob Lutz has gone public with his criticism). Pin Ni, Wanxiang's head of U.S. operations, downplayed such concerns, telling Reuters that the company will "do what's best" for A123. Earlier this month, A123 reached an agreement with Wanxiang Group that could be worth as much as $450 million and may give Wanxiang Group as much as an 80 percent stake in A123. Republican House of Representative Cliff Stearns said at the time that the deal may compromise trade secrets of a company that has received Department of Energy funding. This year, A123 has been hampered by issues such as a battery recall and lower than expected electric vehicle sales. The company, which was founded in 2001, said in a late May filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it expressed "doubt" over being able to continue after losing its primary line of credit. A123's customers include General Motors, BMW and Fisker.Chinese company's stake in A123 puts U.S. trade secrets at risk, execs say originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 18:10:00 EST. Breaking: Revised Chrysler 300 V6 joins Hyundai Genesis atop Consumer Reports large sedan ratings
Filed under: Sedan, Chrysler, Luxury In the not too distant past, large sedans had devolved into largely boring highway cruisers destined for lives consisting of annual trips from New York to South Florida. Thankfully, the industry's latest crop of big four-doors actually brings improved quality and a more enjoyable driving experience to the table. This couldn't be any more evident than the new large sedans that Consumer Reports recently tested and rated. While the Hyundai Genesis remained on top in this category, the updated 2012 Chrysler 300 surged ahead of its other competitors thanks primarily to the car's new transmission. Other sedans tested that were new or improved in 2012 include the Hyundai Azera, Buick LaCrosse eAssist and the 2013 Ford Taurus. With a rating of 87, the Hyundai Genesis is still the institute's top-rated large sedan, but the new Chrysler 300 V6 with the eight-speed automatic transmission put Chrysler's flagship sedan closer to the Genesis with a rating of 83; the V8-powered 300C has a rating of 82. This higher rating is a result of the new ZF-sourced transmission's smoother shifts and improved fuel economy. A five-speed transmission is still offered in the car, but the new gearbox delivers an extra 4 miles per gallon on the highway (and 2 mpg in the combined rating). The new transmission did take a slight hit from CR due to its oddly "fussy" shifter. Nipping at the heels of the new 300 V6, the redesigned 2012 Hyundai Azera received a favorable score of 81 due to mainly its improved interior and ride quality. The Buick LaCrosse eAssist mild hybrid comes in next with a rating of 78 to go with its best-in-class observed economy of 26 mpg, while the 2013 Ford Taurus is still at the bottom of the list with a rating of 64 primarily due to CR's dislike of the MyFord Touch infotainment system and the car's cramped cabin. None of the four new sedans received the coveted CR recommendation since all are either brand-new or significantly updated for 2012. View the press release from CR below.Continue reading Revised Chrysler 300 V6 joins Hyundai Genesis atop Consumer Reports large sedan ratingsRevised Chrysler 300 V6 joins Hyundai Genesis atop Consumer Reports large sedan ratings originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 18:01:00 EST. Report: Canadian Auto Workers vote to merge with rival, form 'super union'
Filed under: UAW/Unions, Canada How would you respond to the headline "No More Auto Workers Union"? Our northern neighbors will likely be bidding goodbye to their Canadian Auto Workers Union, as the membership has agreed to merge with the country's Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union. The Vancouver Sun is reporting that a unanimous vote of delegates at the CAW's convention has approved the merger. If finalized, the new organization will have more than 300,000 members, most of them working in manufacturing, communications and transportation. The CEP still has to vote on the proposal in October, but its president seems bullish on the merger, describing it as a "bigger and better union," according to the report. CAW president Ken Lewenza (pictured above) agreed, saying, "This union will pose a serious challenge to the unrepresentative, unfair economic and political systems workers now find themselves caught in." A new name for the combined organization has not yet been determined.Canadian Auto Workers vote to merge with rival, form 'super union' originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 17:31:00 EST. Video: Toyota shocks ad world with topless androgynous model
Filed under: Japan, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Hatchback, Toyota This one will take some puzzling. Toyota has released an ad for the company's brand-new 2013 Auris hatchback, complete with a topless model. It's not what you think, however. The agency behind the spot contracted Stav Strashko, a 19-year-old male model born in the Ukraine and raised in Israel for the role. Strashko has a distinctly androgynous appearance and has modeled women's clothing in the past. He says he gets mistaken for a female fairly often, but believes "the mind sees what it wants." This may very well be the point of the Auris ad. After Strashko struts for the camera, the text on the screen reads, "Not trendy, not casual, not for everyone." If shock value was the intent, it seems to be working - the new five-door's ad has soaked up more than 650,000 views on YouTube since Sunday. Something tells us we should brand this one with a potentially Not Safe For Work tag. Check out the clip below.Continue reading Toyota shocks ad world with topless androgynous modelToyota shocks ad world with topless androgynous model originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 16:58:00 EST. Official: Fisker Q&A sheds light, lots of light, on Karma problems, lots of Karma problems
Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Fisker, Electric, Luxury Despite what some media outlets are saying, the long list of questions and answers about the Fisker Karma now floating around (and available below) is not a leaked document. Instead, it is part of Fisker's ongoing customer service operations, Roger Ormisher, Fisker's head PR director, told AutoblogGreen. The Q&A is the result of Fisker's ongoing town hall meetings it holds via telephone with customers, where "we discuss everything that's going on with the car." The questions are collected, answers written down and then the list is sent out to all Karma owners, he said. Since the powertrain technology in the Karma is so new, Ormisher said, "this openness is about us developing relationships with our customers." To complement the Q&A, Fisker is thinking of setting up a physical owners council where they could come in and spend time with Fisker to discuss upgrades and changes. Thus far, Ormisher said, the Karma's software updates have been done free of charge and any future updates that affect integral parts of how the car works will continue to be free. There is a possibility that cosmetic upgrades could cost money, but no decision has been made on that. The Q&A says: Specific warranty issues that require flash updates will be performed under the normal terms of the Fisker warranty. ... In the future, software upgrades which improve functionality, navigation or other features may be made available and can be installed at the request of an owner by an authorized Fisker Retailer for a fee. What other information is in the Q&A? In short, Fisker knows there are problems. Lots of them. The Q&A says it is looking to "improv[e] the command center functionality and interface on all current Karmas." (This is why it's terrible right now.) It offers tips on how to get the command center car to respond more quickly. It says Fisker does not have any plans to mute the voice guidance when using navigation, even though customers are asking for it. It explains why the engine sometimes comes on in Stealth Mode. It says Fisker is "investigating the issues which are causing poor Bluetooth performance." Oh, and the problem with the A123 Systems battery packs will start to be fixed in the fourth quarter of 2012. Read the entire Q&A for yourself below.Continue reading Fisker Q&A sheds light, lots of light, on Karma problems, lots of Karma problemsFisker Q&A sheds light, lots of light, on Karma problems, lots of Karma problems originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 16:31:00 EST. Ultimate fast charging tech could refill li-ion battery in a minute
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Asia If you're planning on investing in a DC fast charger to get your electric vehicle battery 80 percent juiced up in 30 minutes, you might want to stick with your Level 2 charger for a while longer. Korean scientists at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) have developed a lithium ion battery that can be recharged 30 to 120 times (!) faster than li-ion batteries on the market today. What's your guestimate on how long a li-ion battery using that technology would take to recharge? How about this one: less than a minute! Li-ion battery packs have been getting smaller and lighter all the time, gaining more capacity and faster charging rates than previous versions. Breaking larger batteries into smaller individual cells has been making EV batteries better, but that technique only gets you so far. The new Korean method takes the cathode material - standard lithium manganese oxide (LMO) in this battery - and soaks it in a solution containing graphite. Then, by carbonizing the graphite-soaked LMO, the graphite turns into a dense network of conductive traces that run throughout the cathode. These networks of carbonized graphite effectively act like blood vessels, allowing every part of the battery to recharge at the same time - speeding up recharge rates to an unheard-of pace. These ultra-fast charging batteries aren't expected to be cheap, which is a problem since the li-ion battery packs currently used in EVs are already too expensive for most car shoppers. The research paper that describes the technology, "Carbon-Coated Single-Crystal LiMn2O4 Nanoparticle Clusters as Cathode Material for High-Energy and High-Power Lithium-Ion Batteries," sounds much too PhD-level and dry for anyone to read, but they show the technology moving forward. As cool as it is, if this innovation takes hold, many consumers will continue to look for EVs that carry this type of battery and have competitive market pricing. Don't expect to see that anytime soon.Ultimate fast charging tech could refill li-ion battery in a minute originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 16:01:00 EST.
Spy Shots: 2014 Volkswagen Golf R prototype makes its first appearance
Filed under: Spy Photos, Performance, Hatchback, Volkswagen Here we have spy shots of the 2014 Mk7 Volkswagen Golf R, the high-flying variant of the hatchback mainstay that will change the way things are done in the Golf world. Built on Volkswagen's next-generation MQB chassis, officials say the 2014 Golf will be about 150 pounds lighter than the current model. The present Golf R makes 256 horsepower from its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, but with 260 horsepower expected in the next GTI, the Golf R will certainly push the bar higher. The question is, how will the bar be pushed? Ulrich Riestenpatt gt. Richter, Executive Director of VW's R division, told us last year that "The future is diesel and all-wheel-drive," so if there's an oil-burner under the hood, don't be surprised. Either way, power will get to all four wheels via six-speed manual or a dual-clutch DSG gearbox. Even the snakeskin camo on this Volkswagen prototype can't hide the dual character lines down the sides of the car, but otherwise, the design is still a surprise. An intercooler and radar for apaptive cruise control have been spotted, and remarkably low profile tires, larger brakes and quad pipes make no secret of what this car will be for. Have a closer look in our high-res gallery above.2014 Volkswagen Golf R prototype makes its first appearance originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 15:44:00 EST. That's right, a full-sized, road-legal sedan that can be driven by remote control. Of course, the R/C functionality has strict limitations: the Su Rui has a max speed of two kilometers an hour when being operated remotely and it only works when the operator is no more than 33 feet away. But who cares about that - it's a full-size R/C car! In case you were wondering about the Su Rui's specs, there are two engines on the menu, one is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 109 horsepower running through a five-speed manual, the other a 1.5-liter turbo four with 154 horsepower and the choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The remote control comes standard with the 1.5 turbo and, we're assuming, the automatic. The car can be started and driven in all directions with the remote, and BYD has pushed the feature as handy for getting into tight parking spots or retrieving your car when it's raining and you don't have an umbrella. We figure that once the black hats get working on it, there'll be a few more tasks the Chinese sedan is good for. You can watch it in action in the video below.Continue reading New Chinese car can be driven by remote controlNew Chinese car can be driven by remote control originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 15:00:00 EST.
Fisker Q&A sheds light, lots of light, on Karma problems, lots of Karma problems
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Fisker Despite what some media outlets are saying, the long list of questions and answers about the Fisker Karma now floating around (and available below) is not a leaked document. Read the entire Q&A for yourself below.Continue reading Fisker Q&A sheds light, lots of light, on Karma problems, lots of Karma problemsFisker Q&A sheds light, lots of light, on Karma problems, lots of Karma problems originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 13:50:00 EST. Spy Shots: Kia readying GT and convertible Soul models?
Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, Budget, Performance, Hatchback, Kia Be it the upright seating arrangement, the utility in a compact package, or just buyers captivated by dancing hamsters, the Kia Soul has proven to be one of the Korean automaker's best-selling models. Its popularity has driven Kia to renew the funky hatch for the 2014 model year, perhaps with some unexpected variants. The sleuths at CarPix have nabbed the next Soul testing in the desert, and even with the camouflage disguise, our spies say it looks like the redesign has left the Soul slightly lower and a little wider. Additionally, the headlights have a more squared-off, masculine appearance. This prototype features a larger lower grille, with the Kia corporate grille moved farther upward. And while the prototype above is likely a look at the bread-and-butter model, AutoExpress is reporting the new generation may spawn a convertible variant. This appears to be purely rumor at this point and thus should be taken with one very big grain of salt, but Kia clearly has aspirations for the range beyond a single bodystyle. It has shown a number of envelope-pushing Soul-based concepts, including the Soul'ster pickup that sported an open roof. That concept was rumored to be headed for production at one time, but was later said to be killed due to the flaccid global economy. A more likely spinoff is a Soul GT with augmented performance and sportier aesthetics. There is reason to believe that a GT model could come with a different bodystyle - after all, the Soul-based Track'ster concept that stole the Chicago Motor Show earlier this year was a three-door. Either way, the Soul appears poised to be the last "box car" standing - The segment-pioneering Honda Element is already out of production and both the Scion xB and Nissan Cube face murky futures.Kia readying GT and convertible Soul models? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 14:16:00 EST. Vídeo: El Nissan Juke R planta cara al Porsche 911 GT2-RS
Filed under: Nissan, Porsche, Etc. Report: Mitsubishi Australia CEO: "I don't know why people buy a Mitsubishi"
Filed under: Car Buying, Mitsubishi, AustraliaWhile we appreciate candor among executives, it is generally unwise for the CEO of any company to slight their own brand - even if they really dislike their product. Mutsuhiro Oshikiri may not have gotten the memo. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, the new CEO of Mitsubishi Australia isn't mincing words, saying "the product is too old...the prices are too high." Oshikiri took over the Australian branch of the Japanese automaker just ten weeks ago, and says the brand needs to be updating its product portfolio more quickly. "I don't know why people by a Mitsubishi...What is the benefit?...I have to find out." The comments are more introspective to the brand than outright defamation, but that doesn't mean that Oshikiri's comments aren't making waves. Struggling Mitsubishi is set to roll out three new models in the Australian market shortly, including a new Outlander and a revival of its low-cost Mirage subcompact (above). The next question Oshikiri may be asking is, "Will it be enough to make the brand relevant?" Only time will tell.Mitsubishi Australia CEO: "I don't know why people buy a Mitsubishi" originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 13:31:00 EST.
