If you recall, this Nissan creation may have the body of a nimble runabout crossover, but it rides on a hacked-up GT-R chassis. With its fire-breathing 485-horsepower twin-turbo V6 and stupendously advanced all-wheel-drive system, the Juke R is Godzilla in black sheep's clothing. To see where this high-powered grocery-getter really stacks up in the supercar world, Car and Driver matched the Juke-R head-to-head with one of the best in the game; the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Car and Driver European correspondent Jethro Bovingdon hopped behind the wheel of the mad crossover first. In Bovingdon's words "everywhere you look, and everything you touch is GT-R, but you are in a Juke and about two feet higher." He is delightfully pleased with the ride, and says its even more aggressive than the Juke-R, due to the short wheelbase. Bovingdon point to the extra weight as a potential issue in high-speed runs, but concedes that the Juke-R is "a massive amount of fun." By comparison, the 911 GT2 RS is a stripped-down, rear-wheel-drive, 611-horsepower monster, operated via a traditional six-speed manual. Its a purist's car, stacked up against a high-tech, all-wheel-drive Frankenstein. The GT2 RS, in comparison to the Juke R, can be unruly in wet conditions. With traction control off, effort was made to warm up the tires. Did it pay off? You're just going to have to watch the video below to find out which car is faster in the C/D test.Continue reading GT-R-powered Nissan Juke-R lines up against Porsche 911 GT2 RSGT-R-powered Nissan Juke-R lines up against Porsche 911 GT2 RS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 19:59:00 EST. The trio of top GOP legislators consists of auto dealer Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, Jim Jordan (also of PA) and House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa of California (pictured). The three legislators are calling for further review of the 2017-2025 Corporate Average Fuel Economy targets. According to a report by The Detroit News, Issa says "Higher fuel efficiency standards is a goal I share - but not at the expense of consumer safety." As the report notes, a deal was struck last summer that would actually lower fuel economy increases from 2017-2021 of 3.5 percent annually for light trucks and five percent every year for cars. Part of this pact stipulated a mid-term review to confirm that reaching these goals was even possible. The National High Traffic Safety Administration, along with the Environmental Protection Agency decided not to meet a self-imposed Wednesday deadline for finalization of the new rules. NHTSA head David Strickland has said that the new regulations will be announced in "days, not weeks," while one House Republican has suggested that the White House may be having misgivings about pushing the legislation through now. It is said that the new standards will cost the auto industry $157.3 billion, but could eventually result in $1.7 trillion in savings for consumers on fuel expenditures. Unfortunately, the new standards could also mean an additional $2,000 to the price of the average automobile by 2025. According to Representative Kelly, "the new CAFE standards will limit choice, compromise safety, and increase costs to millions of Americans..." The issue may be out of their control, however, as Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood noted in a recent interview that the legislation is "... coming soon. Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:07 PM PDT ![]() Report: BBC facing penalties for hosting Top Gear videos on YouTube Filed under: Government/Legal, UK If a corporate content provider in the U.S. wants to upload videos to YouTube, all it essentially needs to do is find someone who knows how to upload videos to YouTube. Then: profit! In the UK, it's done differently - so much so that it sounds like everyone is confused. A regulatory body called The Authority for Television on Demand (ATVOD) oversees on-demand services, including content posted online on branded aggregator sites like Virgin Media as well as open sites like YouTube. Content providers like the BBC, Nickelodeon and MTV that show on-demand content that is "television like," that are editorially responsible for the content, and that make it available to the public need to pay a yearly fee to ATVOD. Here's where things get sticky: The BBC posted clips of its Top Gear and BBC Food programs on its YouTube channel, each clip less than ten minutes. According to The Telegraph, it didn't check with ATVOD about as to its obligations. The ATVOD checked out the clips and said 'these are television-like, so you owe us £2,900 for each channel (that's about $4,600 USD).' The BBC said that clips of less than ten minutes - a fraction of the length of the program on television - are short-form content being watched by people on the move, and thus not television-like. The ATVOD responded to this by basically saying "bollocks." Since the BBC content in question satisfies the ATVOD's entire checklist for matters it regulates, the clips in question are "television-like" enough to justify the fee. The BBC joins a long line of media outlets including newspapers and magazines questioning ATVOD decisions, such as rulings that a company that makes a show is responsible for the editorial content of an on-demand show and needs to pay ATVOD as opposed to the broadcaster of the show paying ATVOD. It isn't just big guns that ATVOD goes after, either, its call for licensing fees having shut down more than one independent site offering content like amateur short films. The BBC is appealing, and it looks like clarification will have to come from the UK courts.BBC facing penalties for hosting Top Gear videos on YouTube originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 18:32:00 EST. According to a new survey just released by Swapalease, the majority of respondents declined to pick an answer to the question of what was their dream hybrid. Sure, the sample is limited - not man more than 200 Swapalease nationwide members participated - but to not have any answer to "What's Your Dream [hybrid] Car?" is kind of astonishing. Not even the hybrid flagship, the Toyota Prius, has seen any additional interest on the site, despite rising gas prices. Average daily searches for the Prius on Swapalease.com have fallen 16 percent since the beginning of July. Participant in the Swapalease program tend to leave their leases early, so they're already unusual car shoppers. Leasing makes up a smaller proportion of U.S. new car sales than loans, but Swapalease users are constantly checking out their new car options. Hybrids haven't won them over, just as they haven't done with most than two-to-three percent of the overall car buyer population in any given year. "It's not terribly surprising that hybrids haven't topped the list of people's dream cars. So far, hybrids have tended to be utilitarian-looking vehicles, not sleek and fast-looking, and their relatively new, unfamiliar technology has only resulted in sales to about three percent of U.S. car shoppers in the decade-plus that they have been available," Edmunds.com Features Editor Carroll Lachnit said in the Swapalease press release (available below). Hybrids scored lowest among possible dream cars, even when price is not an issue. Many respondents wrote in saying they feel diesel is the preferred source of fuel efficiency for the future. "People might be dreaming of fuel independence and better gas mileage, but they aren't dreaming about hybrids," said Scot Hall, executive vice president of Swapalease.com said in a statement. "Our dream car survey illustrates that people want more 'fast and furious' in their vehicle of choice, not 'lean and green.'"Continue reading Hybrids not the dream vehicles of the short-term lease crowdHybrids not the dream vehicles of the short-term lease crowd originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 17:51:00 EST. One German member of Eurobricks.com created exactly that as he designed and built his very own Lego Lambo. According to the Lego-centric forum, Georg (aka Polo-Freak) started with a 1:18 scale model of the Countach and used a computer program to begin mapping out the construction of Lego Lamborghini starting in 2007. Three years later, he started buying the necessary pieces for his Lego masterpiece, and while he doesn't give any ballpark figure of how many blocks it took to built the car (or at what cost), the number of pieces required for this project is probably more Legos than most of had in total as kids. The scaled-down Lamborghini is surprisingly detailed with all of the car's unique elements - such as the raised spoiler, rear air scoops and even the pop-up headlights. After all the planning, it still took him two weeks to assemble. That is probably more dedication than most of us have put into our full-scale projects, and the end result is a nothing short of incredible.Awesome Lego Lamborghini Countach is on a grand scale originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 16:28:00 EST. The enthusiast website has, in the past, had its way with other battery-powered bikes, but they either were not yet available for sale or, if they were, they failed to impress. Not so with the Empulse. Comparing it to the Triumph Street Triple that Brammo used as a benchmark for its naked streetfighter, HFL concluded that the Empulse is actually a better machine. With half the horsepower, slightly less torque and more weight, it's not quicker, faster nor does it offer better range than the gasser. By better they mean that it offers a more pure riding experience. Considering the source, that is high praise, indeed. Over two days of cruising around Ashland, OR, the Empulse impressed the journalist with its superior handling. Similar to the Mission R, the optimal packaging of batteries and mechanicals of the Empulse make it quite flickable and, with help from top-shelf suspension components, super solid in the turns. Unlike the Mission Motors machine - and most electric motorcycles - the Empulse has a 6-speed transmission and that was just fine by the HFL jockey. Although he found the clutch somewhat heavy and the shift movement a tad clunky, it did involve the rider in a rewarding way. Of course, we can't communicate everything about this first ride in quite the way the actual participants did, so head on over and read for yourself how eyes are being opened to the potential of the electric drive experience.Hell For Leather rides the Brammo Empulse R, declares electric motorcycles have arrived originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 16:02:00 EST. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall for the all-new JX today for an issue that could leave drivers stranded. This recall, which begins on September 4, affects early JX models built between February 15 and June 22. That amounts to 7,842 units - through July, Infiniti has sold 9,724 JX models in total. Infiniti's new luxury three-row crossover is being recalled due to a problem with a fuel line that can block the fuel level float that could yield an incorrect reading on the fuel gauge. With the gauge stuck at the same level, JX owners could run out of gas thinking they have more fuel than they do. Fortunately, the free fix for the problem is simply inspecting and, if necessary, rerouting the fuel line away from the fuel level float.Scroll down for the official NHTSA press release.Continue reading Infiniti recalls JX over gas gauge issueInfiniti recalls JX over gas gauge issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 16:01:00 EST. Filed under: Concept Cars, Technology, Videos, Specialty, MISC Will we soon be commuting on real-life hovercraft soon? It depends on what you mean by "soon," "commuting" and "real-life."Aerofex has released video showing its two-rotor, one-manned vehicle lifting off the ground, negotiating turns and landing. But Gizmag says the most amazing claim from Aerofex concerns the tandem duct vehicle's guidance system. The company says its prototype uses no flight software or electronics of any kind to give the "pilot" complete control over pitch, roll and yaw. The gadget site, though, isn't totally convinced, stating the videos "appear to show successful test flights." The italics are Gizmag's. Watching the video, it's hard not to be impressed by how well the prototype seems to work. It's also not hard to notice the complete lack of sound, leading us to believe the hoverbike is a long way from cruising down Main Street. Watch the silent test flight video below.Continue reading Did a California company just perfect hover bike technology?Did a California company just perfect hover bike technology? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 15:00:00 EST. Se presenta en el Caravan Salon 2012 de Düsseldorf y en septiembre iniciará su comercialización. Gracias a la mayor altura al suelo, este motorhome puede circular por terrenos irregulares mientras que el sistema de tracción total garantizará que no se quede atascado a la primera de cambio. La estética de este modelo es quizás lo más negativo, pero se ha realizado de manera muy cúbica para aprovechar el espacio. Cuenta con pocos adornos decorativos para evitar que al circular por campo sufran daños. Posted: 22 Aug 2012 01:10 PM PDT ![]() Report: Bowling Green suspends tours ahead of next-gen Corvette production Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Plants/Manufacturing, Chevrolet If you want a tour of the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, or if you want to pick up your brand-new car there, you have until September 14 to make it happen. After that, according to a report in The Detroit News, the factory will close to retool for production of the next-generation Corvette, the C7. No timeline has been given for how long the assembly lines will be hidden from public view. As for what they'll be building, for a car that has endured as much focused speculation as Roswell and Area 51 (and seemingly for just as long), it's a testament to the Chevrolet development team that we can still only guess. As for putting pictures to the theories, we've seen a rendering that some have suggested has real clout, we got a look at the front fascia a few weeks ago, a speculative visualization video a couple of days ago that we really hope is off base and, naturally, spy shots. We don't know when it will be revealed but, relatively speaking, it shouldn't be long now.Bowling Green suspends tours ahead of next-gen Corvette production originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 14:30:00 EST.
