Video: Icon Bronco rumbles into Jay Leno's Garage
Filed under: Aftermarket, Classics, SUV, Videos, Ford, Specialty, Off-Road According to Jay Leno, "The only time people in L.A. go off-roading is when they are about to get a D.U.I." That may be the case, but if you are looking to hit the trails with something inherently tough, but with a classic look, the folks at Icon are the people to see about it. The builder, known for retro-look off-roaders with serious trail chops, has done its thing with the CJ and FJ. Now the Icon brand (not to be confused with Iconic the makers of a reinterpretation of the Shelby Cobra) has rolled out its Bronco redeux, and brought it by Jay Leno's Garage. Icon CEO and Lead Designer Jonothan Ward dropped in at Jay's with one of his creations. Ward explains that he goes around the country looking for rust-free, unmolested Bronco bodies, and fits them to a fully modern chassis. There are disc brakes all around, front and rear lock-on-the-fly differentials and a brand new Ford Coyote engine shoehorned under the hood. The 5.0-liter mill makes an ungodly sound.Click below to watch Jay talk about a vehicle that differs greatly from other performance cars that swing by his garage.Continue reading Icon Bronco rumbles into Jay Leno's GarageIcon Bronco rumbles into Jay Leno's Garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 19:59:00 EST. Fisker delaying Surf, Sunset models, but if you've got the cash...
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Fisker Remember when Fisker Automotive denied that the Surf - the wagon version of the Karma - was delayed? Yeah, you can forget that, apparently. A reader named Dennis posted this to the Fisker Buzz forums - "I was told that Fisker is willing to build Surfs one-off for anyone willing to pay $200K" - and we thought that was interesting enough to ask for an official response. Guess what? It's kind of true. Roger Ormisher, Fisker's senior director of global corporate communications and PR, told AutoblogGreen that: The Surf is currently on the back burner as we finalize our plans to bring Atlantic to market. That is the number one focus here at Fisker as the volume of that model is key to our long-term success. There is no official plan to build the Surf at this stage as an assembly plant volume variant, so the only option available is as a modified, bespoke or custom build Karma. If someone came along with a big enough checkbook, we are always open to discussions. Our friends at Green Car Reports found out that the Surf and the Sunset models are taking a back seat to the Atlantic. And we're sure that dealing with the latest recall tops the To Do list. Still, who's interested in getting their own special one-off Fisker?Fisker delaying Surf, Sunset models, but if you've got the cash... originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 19:59:00 EST. Monterey: We take a closer (live) look at the McLaren X-1 Concept
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Performance, Misc. Auto Shows, Design/Style, MISC The McLaren X-1 Concept was easily one of the most talked about vehicles on display at The Quail during Pebble Beach weekend in Monterey. Rather than dismiss it as "one of those charmless, jelly bean-like vaporware eco-cars that the automakers periodically show off at motorshows," as one of our readers so eloquently noted in the comments section on Sunday when we revealed it, we decided to take a closer look. Climbing onto the McLaren stage, we bumped into Frank Stephenson. The famed automobile designer (credited with the Mini Hatch, BMW E53 X5 and the Ferrari F430, among others) is the Design Director at McLaren Automotive. Stephenson explained that the X-1 program began three years ago - before the very first McLaren MP4-12C had even hit the pavement - when an anonymous customer approached McLaren Special Operations (MSO) to build a very unique supercar. The custom-built vehicle would use the carbon-fiber composite chassis, running gear and cockpit from the upcoming production car, but its body panels would reflect "timeless and classical elegance." It is true that pictures don't do the X-1 any justice, but it isn't much better in person. The design is interesting, but its rear clip appears heavy and out of proportion (most of the blame is focused on the trick hinged wheel covers). The lines don't flow, and many seemed forced. It is unquestionably odd, from any angle. But this is one man's vision - one must look beyond that individual's tastes to find the real beauty. The X-1 is stunning in the details. Every square inch of the concept has been engineered to standards high enough for interplanetary travel. Whether machined from solid aluminum, sculpted in carbon fiber or hand-polished to a mirror-like finish, the craftsmanship on the X-1 is breathtaking. After more than thirty minutes of chin-rubbing scrutiny, we were sold. McLaren says there is enough tooling to make five more copies, but in similar manner to revealing the name of the person who funded this extraordinary venture, the company is mum on pricing. We take a closer (live) look at the McLaren X-1 Concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 19:30:00 EST. Official: Nissan Juke Ministry of Sound edition hits the techno beat [w/video]
Filed under: Europe, Videos, Crossover, Nissan, Misc. Auto Shows, UK, Design/Style It seems that Nissan Europe has all the fun, and just maybe, all the crazy. When they built the Juke-R, that was a head-turner but it was still Earthly, at least a little bit. The Juke Box is just plain nuts. Working with dance music icons Ministry of Sound and Martin Audio, the trio created a Juke with a specially fabricated sound system to provide the same aural intensity found within The Box at 2 a.m. - The Box being the Ministry of Sound's especially fabricated room-within-a-room at its Covent Garden club said to have the world's best acoustics (and a specially sprung floor to reduce dancer fatigue). After doing a tour of Europe with its 19-kilowatt system and 150 dB of brain crushing strength, the Juke Box is going on sale. Three thousand of them will be available to customers starting in September, in either Metallic Black and Solid White or exteriors with exclusive trim like white wheels, door handles and center console. An Apple iPod Touch preloaded with Nissan and Ministry of Sound video and music content will also be a part of the program. Nissan hasn't said how much the Juke Box package will add, but it can be added to any engine and drivetrain combo. The model will be officially introduced at the 2012 Moscow International Auto Salon later this month. In the meantime, there's a press release below with more details and a couple of videos explaining how it was all done.Continue reading Nissan Juke Ministry of Sound edition hits the techno beat [w/video]Nissan Juke Ministry of Sound edition hits the techno beat [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 19:00:00 EST. OnStar gets button redesign, Camaro gets frameless rearview mirror
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Technology, Chevrolet, GM, Design/Style, Infotainment After holding what we're sure were enough clinics to start a psych practice, General Motors has unveiled a redesign of its OnStar buttons and certain features for its 2013 products. The biggest change comes with the hands-free calling button, which gets swapped from a telephone icon to one of a person speaking. In addition to still making and taking calls, OnStar takes voice commands so that drivers can check on a saved route, traffic, weather and more. The new button also matches up with the voice command button on the touchscreen interfaces for MyLink, CUE and IntelliLink. The two remaining buttons get less drastic makoevers. With OnStar's move into global markets, the emergency button sports now sports "SOS" instead of the white cross, the former graphic being internationally recognized as a request for help. And the OnStar button itself is updated with the brand's logo that was redesigned in 2010. Certain 2013 Chevrolet Camaro models get a further aesthetic treat, with the 2SS, 2LT and ZL1 models getting touchscreen interfaces on frameless mirrors. The same three button will illuminate when touched, then disappear. Check out the press release below for more info.Continue reading OnStar gets button redesign, Camaro gets frameless rearview mirrorOnStar gets button redesign, Camaro gets frameless rearview mirror originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 17:59:00 EST. Motorsports: NASCAR coverage going Spanish, including Daytona 500 live en Español
Filed under: Motorsports In order to combat declining attendance at races, NASCAR is looking to tap into a new demographic of fans by teaming up with Fox Deportes to attract more Latino race fans. Starting with the 2013 season, Fox Deportes will provide coverage for 15 Sprint Cup races including six live races as well as creating original programs and news updates for the sport. According to NASCAR.com, Fox Deportes is the top Latino sports network in the U.S. and the network already covers Formula One racing, but this deal will bring NASCAR's most prestigious Sprint Cup Series to Spanish-speaking fans. Not surprisingly, the live broadcasts will come from the sport's most popular venues including Talladega and Bristol and Daytona - including the 2013 Daytona 500 and Daytona Shootout - which will mark the first time there will be a Spanish-speaking broadcast for "The Great American Race." More than just race coverage, Fox Deportes will also create a series of original shows including four 30-minute productions that aim to introduce Latino race fans to the history of stock car racing.NASCAR coverage going Spanish, including Daytona 500 live en Español originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 18:31:00 EST. Coda gets wrapped up in art, turns gas staion into grass station [w/video]
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Coda Automotive, Videos The first LA Mobile Arts Festival is in full swing and it seems the event has motivated Coda Automotive to get in touch with the right side of its brain. Following in the long tradition of artistically-altered automobiles, the California-based company has taken a layer of wraps off of the recently-wrapped Coda iPad Art Car. Designed by artist Matthew Watkins by "finger-painting" on an iPad, the esthetically-improved all-electric Sedan will be on exhibit at the Santa Monica Art Studios until August 25th. Coincidentally, the airport hanger in which it is displayed is the same one where the Coda was founded and the first prototype built. Cool, but that's not the only way in which the automaker has been getting its "funky" on recently. It's also undertaken something of an environmental art installation: the transformation of a Culver City, CA gas station into a grass station. Over the period of several hours, Coda introduced all kinds of items - real grass, animals, people having fun - to a generic Super Petrol store. And, rather than uninstall the pumps, it left them in to allow gas-vehicle drivers the opportunity to think about the experience in a different, greener way. Nice. Subtle.Scroll below for an excellent video of the installation and let us know what you think about this kind of marketing in the comments.Continue reading Coda gets wrapped up in art, turns gas staion into grass station [w/video]Coda gets wrapped up in art, turns gas staion into grass station [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 17:50:00 EST. Report: Germany's Melkus files for bankruptcy
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Europe, Earnings/Financials, MISC Another boutique maker of compact sports coupes has filed for bankruptcy in Germany. Melkus was a company we always enjoyed seeing at European auto shows. You never knew where the company would be - all of a sudden you'd notice a sleek, lissome coupe with open gullwing doors and you'd go, "Ah, there you are." That won't be happening anymore unless a white knight shows up: Melkus has reportedly filed for bankruptcy in a Dresden court, citing a lack of sales for its dire cash position. Six year ago, Sepp Melkus, the grandson of the man who built the original Melkus sports cars from 1969 to 1980, restarted the company. The planned run was 25 examples a year at €115,000 ($143,000 U.S.), which would get customers either 270 horsepower from a Toyota 1.8-liter turbocharged four or up to 325 hp from a Volkswagen 2.0-liter turbo (enough to dash from zero to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds). Turns out that tweaking a Lotus Elise, which the Melkus RS2000 is based on, and charging six figures in today's economy wasn't the way to go. The company isn't completely giving up yet, but it joins Artega in the search for a Mr. or Ms. Big to replenish the coffers and keep the lights from going out for good.Germany's Melkus files for bankruptcy originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 17:31:00 EST.
Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Performance, Videos, Dodge, Mercedes-Benz, Celebrities, Humor, Luxury For both comedy and car fans, Jerry Seinfeld and his "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" web series has been a car-filled, caffeine-fueled, laugh-fest. The trend continues in the two latest installments of his unusual unscripted series. In the first video seen above, Jerry picks up actor Alec Baldwin in a Signal Red Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster. The two exchange anecdotes about their shared hometown of Massapequa, New York and of a Kirk Douglas-Burt Lancaster rivalry. Baldwin also considers his mortality and calls Seinfeld a "lazy, shiftless bastard." Baldwin also decrees that he is the most articulate person in the Screen Actors Guild, and talks about the jealousy induced by watching his neighbors play on a Slip 'n' Slide.Click below to see the video of the two prolific funny men talk over coffee and while tooling around in Seinfeld's cherry SL. Additionally, we've added a recent episode of the web series that you might have missed, and this time Jerry is on the West Coast at the wheel of a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A. Opinion: Postmortem: Maybach meets its maker
Filed under: Sedan, Maybach, LuxuryWhy Daimler's Ultra-Luxe Brand Couldn't Compete With Bentley And Rolls Daimler took hubris to a new level believing that it could simply invent a new brand. What was intended to make a big splash in the premium luxury car market has ended with a dull thud. Almost exactly a decade after it lifted the first of the big cars into New York by helicopter, Daimler AG has pulled the plug on its Maybach marque. And the odds are that few, if any, of the affluent motorists it was targeting will even notice the brand's departure. Maybach was intended to go up against the most elite nameplates in the automotive market: Rolls-Royce and Bentley. But, in hindsight, it appears that Daimler took hubris to a new level believing that it could simply invent a new brand that would be taken seriously by the sort of buyers who want the Spirit of Ecstasy or Flying B hood ornaments on their cars. Zipcar expands Zipvan cargo van service in U.S.
Filed under: Transportation Alternatives, USA Here's a reason to get your friends to hurry up when they're helping you move: you're paying for the rental van by the hour. As least, that's how the new Zipvan service from Zipcar operates. Starting at just $15.75 an hour or $109 a day, Zipvan makes carsharing larger vehicles a reasonable option - if you don't dawdle. Since starting in London last November, Zipvans have been taken on over 12,000 trips in San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Toronto and Washington, D.C. Zipcar announced today that Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Portland and Seattle will also start service as of now, with the rest of Zipcar's metro locations on the horizon. For the rental fee, similar to how standard Zipcar works, you don't have to pay extra for gas, insurance or anything under 180 miles to drive the Ford E-150 full size cargo van that offers over 230 cubic feet of cargo space. Even though Zipcar uses vehicles from a variety of auto manufacturers, it does have a special relationship with Ford. The largest vehicles you can get using regular Zipcar rates are things like the Ford Escape or Nissan Frontier.Continue reading Zipcar expands Zipvan cargo van service in U.S.Zipcar expands Zipvan cargo van service in U.S. originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 15:56:00 EST. Report: Ken Block suing former co-producers of Gymkhana vids
Filed under: Motorsports, Government/Legal When we say "gymkhana," what comes to mind? If it's the drift maestro Ken Block, then you understand the crux of a lawsuit by Block against the former producers of his popular video series. If you go to Gymkhana.com, you'll find all sorts of photos, videos, and links related to the sport. What you'll find very little mention of, is Ken Block, himself. Why? Because Block does not own the website's URL, even though he officially owns the trademark. According to a Jalopnik interview with the stunt driver, Block learned of the site when a colleague was approached by its owners, Mad Media, who were hoping to sell advertising. Mad Media is the crew who produced a few of Block's early (and insanely popular) drifting videos, and the Ford Fiesta pilot says he was very surprised to find out that they owned the Gymkhana URL. When Block reached out to Josh Martelli of Mad Media, Block says he was basically told to go pound sand. Martelli was also interviewed for the story, and he notes, "The automotive sport of gymkhana has been around since the 1900s... no one has the right to prevent the public from using the word gymkhana to report on, discuss, or promote the sport - especially on a website." While he may be a little off-base on his history (in the 1900s, gymkhana was an equestrian sport), Martelli brings up an interesting point. The name and the driving discipline of gymkhana very much predates the Internet, but on the other hand, no 4-H video has ever garnered 160 million views on YouTube. Additionally, no single person is as strongly associated with the success of the sport as Block, and the relevance of Mad Media in this arena can largely be attributed to the vision of Block and his unique skill set. For now, it looks like both sides are willing to drag out a costly lawsuit for the URL rights. Both will likely cite lofty causes for rallying around this flag, but at the end of the day, there is a decent amount of ad revenue to be made from the site, too.Ken Block suing former co-producers of Gymkhana vids originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 15:44:00 EST.
Video: Consumer Reports cuts loose, compares Scion FR-S against Subaru BRZ
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Videos, Scion, Subaru The folks at Consumer Reports are a lot like the Ben Steins of the automotive world. At first glance, they are the dry-as-saltines, facts-only crew that can't be bothered by anything but the empirical data with which they distill to arrive at their coveted "Recommended" accolades. It isn't always this way with CR, though, as we found out when they hopped behind the wheel of the Toyobaru coupes of our collective dreams, the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. Automotive engineer Jake Fisher hosts this test and speaks for the CR team explaining that, though both coupes are very much the same animal, they have subtle differences. The BRZ comes with a bit more available kit, like a rear spoiler, HID headlights and navigation, while the FR-S carries a lower price. All seems like what we've heard before, right? Well, CR ends up favoring the FR-S, claiming it has a more balanced ride and handles better. This decision stands in contrast to a recent Motor Trend comparison test, in which the print publication favored the driving characteristics of the Subaru over the Scion. More than anything, this highlights just how close the two cars are, and as CR's Fisher put it, "You're not gonna go wrong with either one of these." We agree, but click below to see the video and find out exactly what made CR err on the side of the Scion, then weigh in with your thoughts in Comments.Consumer Reports cuts loose, compares Scion FR-S against Subaru BRZ originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 14:58:00 EST. Report: High tarriffs curb resurgent U.S. hopes for Holden Ute
Filed under: Truck, Pontiac, Holden, Australia With the Holden Commodore sedan on its way back to the States as the Chevrolet SS, we were hoping that the El Camino-like, two-seat Ute wouldn't be far behind (after all, the halfbreed was supposed to be offered here as the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck before General Motors offed the brand altogether). Unfortunately, however, the Aussies have been informed that the Ute falls under our light commercial tariff rate of 35 percent - roughly three times the rate on passenger vehicle imports. "We were hopeful at one stage, we thought we might be able to duck in under it, but it was ruled out," Holden executive director Richard Phillips tells the Herald Sun. "With the dollar where it is, exports can only be pursued that are niche... and profitable in this environment." Bummer.High tarriffs curb resurgent U.S. hopes for Holden Ute originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 14:29:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink | Email this | Comments
