Perfecto entonces, porque se trata de un taller de preparaciones chino que, por primera vez, acaba de llegar con sus kits a Reino Unido, gracias a haber logrado la certificación ISO. Y para celebrarlo acaba de lanzar su primer kit específico para el MINI Coupé de cara a Europa. Se llama Revozport Mini Targa Raze, y por el momento se queda en unos muy bien elaborados chops (parecen fotos de estudio, de hecho). Cuenta con un kit de llantas específico, nuevos paragolpes, taloneras, aletas ensanchadas, un alerón posterior "más de carreras", y unas nuevas tomas de aire instaladas en el capó frontal. El motor se potencia hasta los 250 caballos desde los 211 del Coupe Cooper S JCW, la suspensión se rebaja y endurece, y el peso del conjunto se aligera 30 kilos a base de usar fibra de carbono, kevlar y epoxi en componentes como los citados paragolpes. Un silencioso en titanio pone la guinda de este MINI, que se presentará en las próximas semanas en Zhuhai, China. A battery-electric Holden Commodore set what its builders say is an unofficial record for miles driven purely on electric power over the course of 24 hours. Australia-based EV Engineering said that the Holden (the brand is General Motors' Australian division) traveled 1,172 miles in 24 hours using a smaller version of the battery-switching system that Better Place is using in Israel and Denmark. The powertrain of the Commodore, which has about a 100-mile single-charge range, was built by UQM Technologies. EV Engineering is a collaborative venture that includes companies like Bosch and General Electric in addition to Better Place. Its goal is to "develop a proof of concept Australian electric vehicle." Various automaking entities appear to be trying to get publicity by announcing distance records for certain EVs. What you're about to see is a young man driving a very fast car - an E46 BMW M3, it appears - down a deserted road in the desert. We can't say for certain where it took place, but it looks a lot like Arizona. There are just enough elevation changes to make the road a bit challenging for the inexperienced. Judging from the result of this boy's escapades, inexperienced pretty much sums it up. There's a blind corner, a road that drops away before a sweeping left turn and way too much speed. And then there's an airbag. Fortunately, it seems the driver walked away without serious injuries. Auto Shows, Luxury The 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance has officially come to a close. Even though the entrants from 33 states and 15 countries are currently packing up their toys and heading home, you can still take in the sights by clicking through the gallery above. Cars and owners competed for trophies across 20 standard and seven special categories. While a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 608S Saoutchik Torpedo rolled away with the Best of Show honor, there were plenty of vehicles on hand worth a second look. This year featured an entire class devoted to the bodywork of coach builder Jacques Saoutchik, and while a 1938 Hispano-Suiza Dubonnet Saoutchick "Xenia" Coupe missed out on taking home any hardware, the stream-lined silver machine won us over in a big way. The concours also featured a class specifically for German motorcycles, as well as classes for both AC models and Shelby Cobra examples. Organizers also set aside a trophy for some very unique machines - the Maharaja and Maharaja Rolls-Royce classes were specifically for vehicles formerly owned by Indian royalty and included some of the most interesting hardware in attendance. In 2009, the German juggernaut's interest was piqued by the idea of supplying engines when the new regulations mandated 1.6-liter turbocharged V6s in 2014. By the end of 2010, it was said that VW had decided not to join the F1 circus, but that hasn't stopped repeated speculative announcements to the contrary. Just three months ago Jost Capito, VW's recently christened head of motorsport, said VW wouldn't enter F1. But he was speaking for the VW brand, not the group - and that is perhaps why we can have a brand new report sourced from Germany's Sport Bild magazine (we can't locate the report on the Sport Bild site, though) that the VW Group is considering entering F1 in 2015 with Sauber. Peter Sauber is said to have admitted meeting VW CEO Martin Winterkorn at the Geneva Motor Show this year, but Sauber F1 team CEO Monisha Kaltenborn said that's where the story ends. Not according to the Sport Bild report, though: it says not only is VW looking to partner with Sauber, but longer term it could be planning its own chassis that would be designed at the Porsche Motorsport Centre in Weissach, Germany, where Porsche is also working on its Le Mans entrant. Could VW have big things in mind for its newest carmaker acquisition? Porsche has said it's focused on Le Mans and not F1, but who knows, and we wouldn't complain about a Porsche-McLaren-Lotus/Renault-Mercedes-AMG battle in the series. It would also be interesting to see if Volkswagen could succeed as a constructor, an effort at in which other German brands have so far failed in the modern era. The 2015 timing is odd, but the mentioned team might not be. Sauber is doing amazingly well this year with hardly any sponsorship at all, much less manufacturer backing: both its drivers are in the top ten, and it is the sixth in the constructor standings behind the manufacturers and Red Bull Racing. Practicing this type of electric-vehicle keiretsu could lead to harikari. In an Automotive News commentary, Dave Guiliford analyzed two examples of such investment alliances that haven't gone so well. In 2010, battery maker A123 Systems took a $20.5-million stake in Fisker Automotive and supplied the battery systems for the first (and thus far only) Fisker car, the Karma. In 2007, Ener1 took a 31 percent stake in Norwegian EV maker Think and signed a contract to supply lithium ion batteries for the Think City electric car. As part of that deal, Ener1 CEO Charles Gassenheimer became chairman of the Think board. Initially, these partnerships seemed to make sense. If these types of partnerships worked well together, it could be similar to what's called keiretsu in Japan, where suppliers become an important part of the supply chain for automakers and long-term, successful partnerships are forged. On the other side of the coin, taking such investment risks can end poorly. As Guiliford wrote, "Tying a small, new-tech supplier and a small, new-tech automaker compounds the risk that each company has." Both Ener1 and Think have entered bankruptcy following Think's disappointing sales of the City. A123 has written down its investment in Fisker by nearly half and cautioned, in its first-quarter report, that it could be at risk from lower-than-expected orders from Fisker. Fisker is struggling to bring its second plug-in hybrid, the Atlantic, to market. The lesson? Taking equity links can sometimes be a shrewd move for automotive partners. Auto Shows, UK, Luxury, Racing Contrary to appearances, all of the important classic cars in the world weren't on display at Pebble Beach this weekend. One of them, the 4¼-liter Bentley 'Embiricos' Special, has made a home at Bentley's Lineage Showroom inside its factory in Crewe. Commissioned by Greek gentleman racer André Embiricos in the 1930s, the Bentley chassis was clothed in aluminum by French designer Georges Paulin. The aerodynamic sheetmetal was more akin to the lines of the streamlined, and French, Talbot-Lago or a Delahaye, and a departure from Bentley tourers and racers of the time. Embiricos used his coupe for racing and as a daily driver, and the gentleman he sold it to in 1939 campaigned it in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. World War II interrupted the development of any more such sleek Bentleys, but the post-war period would bring the R Type Continental, whose Embiricos ancestry can be seen immediately. The Embiricos will be on display at Pyms Lane until September, then be shown at the Windsor Castle Concours d' Elegance. En el vídeo que verás tras el salto puedes ver cómo el fuerte viento azotaba los paneles de señalización cómo si fueran algodones. Las imágenes, que nos llegan directamente desde Calgary (Canadá), dejan muy claro que hay ocasiones en las que la mejor opción es dejar el coche en casa... y si nos pilla en pleno viaje, tratar de buscar un sitio para resguardarnos hasta que llegue la calma. It was back in 2009 that the two-tone concept had audiences agog, and rumors and leaks since then have had everyone wondering if the four-seat fastback will ever become reality. To hit 'rewind' on the rumormill, the Galibier was initially greenlit in early 2011 and tipped to go into production this year, a timeframe that was later revised to next year. The model was earmarked to have less than 1,000 horsepower and optional hybrid power, and at the same time, the design was meant to be finalized, but it was instead reportedly scrapped for not being outrageous enough. The Galibier then went back to the design bureau and the horsepower was subsequently announced as surpassing the four-digit mark. Production is now planned for somewhere around 2015, and according to Dürheimer's chat with Car and Driver, the Galibier on the way will be original and blindingly fast. The executive would only commit to the "over 1,000 hp" line, but C/D believes the ouput will be around 1,400 non-hybridized ponies. Whatever the final number is, it is said to get the Galibier beyond 235 mph and, Durheimer said, be "faster than anything on the market" - and that includes wares from the aftermarket sector. Dürheimer also says the Galibier will have technologies that are automotive firsts. What remains to be decided is the candy coating that will envelop all that sweetness, since "the final design still is in flux." To keep people as intrigued outside the concert as they are inside, Acura turned the ILX into an LED art car with a 3D display where there should have been an interior. Creating the LED light show took 4,600 hours, that was for the installation of 7,500 individually controllable LEDs activated by more than 1,100 lines of programming. But as we get closer to the production car's debut - reportedly scheduled for the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show - the even-hotter XF's design is coming into focus. And might we say, she's a beaut'. The XFR's aggressive appearance has been enhanced at the front with larger air intakes that look downright fierce, and lower skirts have been added to the sides. Out back, new bodywork has been added to the quarter panels and a larger lip spoiler adorns the trunk. The whole package looks awesome, and we can't wait to see what this bruiser looks like when all of the swirly paper has been removed. Under the hood, expect to find Jaguar's delicious 5.0-liter supercharged V8, tuned to the same 550 horsepower as the XKR-S. That's a 40-horsepower increase over the standard XFR, and Jaguar will likely implement some exhaust tuning to make its Top Cat snarl with even greater volume. | Posted: 20 Aug 2012 01:33 PM PDT  Official: 2013 Honda Accord production fires up with Earth Dreams power Filed under: Coupe, Sedan, Plants/Manufacturing, Honda Production of the "Earth Dreams" powertrains that will slot into the 2013 Honda Accord got underway at the Japanese automaker's Anna Engine and Honda Transmission Mfg. plants last week, and both facilities have begun feeding engines and gearboxes to the Marysville, Ohio, assembly lines where the 2013 Accord has started rolling off the lines. A ceremony marking the start of the new generation's assembly today also served to celebrate Honda's 30 years of production in the States. As one would expect with car as important to Honda as the ninth-generation Accord, the company has made a huge investment in the North American debut of its new direct-injected, 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a new CVT transmission and a 3.5-liter V6 and its optional six-speed automatic. Honda has spent $220 million on expansions, casting operations and automated lines for its associates, and the plant is now able to make 1.8 million Earth Dreams engines annually. The new engines are said to be good for a 10-percent improvement in fuel economy compared to current offerings, and the powerplants will eventually migrate to other models in Honda's lineup. That car-sharing service - which is active in three cities in Germany: Berlin, Munich and Dusseldorf - made its U.S. debut in San Francisco in June. Today, BMW gave more details on the San Francisco service and announced the upcoming launch of ParkNow.DriveNow is a short-term rental scheme that is awfully similar to Daimler's Car2go program. Using your smartphone or a computer, you can locate a nearby available car and then rent it for 29 cents a minute. When you're done, you can park it anywhere within the defined business area and call it good. At least, that's how it works in Europe. In San Francisco, you pay $12 for the first 30 minutes, then 32 cents for each minute. Oh, and you need to return the car to a DriveNow location (there are currently eight) when finished. DriveNow in San Francisco uses 70 all-electric ActiveE vehicles, whereas other cities use some Mini models as well. ParkNow is a service that will help you find open parking spaces. This is important because BMW says there are "an estimated 505,000 vehicles in San Francisco, yet only 448,000 parking spaces available at any given time." With ParkNow, you can shorten your rental time by reserving a parking space ahead of time. You can find a spot, reserve it and prepay through your cell phone or the web. When using the mobile app, you can also get directions to "your" spot. There are currently 14 locations in San Francisco beta testing ParkNow and 100 more will be added in the next few weeks. ParkNow, a part of BMW i, is a joint venture between BMW and Urban Mobility and will officially start up in September. | Posted: 20 Aug 2012 01:33 PM PDT  Official: Top 10 most-stolen vehicles of 2011 released by NICB [w/video] Filed under: Sedan, Safety, Videos, Honda There are plenty of lists on which consumers love to see their vehicles, but the National Insurance Crime Bureau annual "Hot Wheels" roster is likely not be one of them. The Illinois-based NICB has just released its annual top 10 list of stolen vehicles using 2011 data submitted by law enforcement agencies. The good news that comes out of this report is that the NICB says car theft has dropped by 3.3 percent compared to 2010, and last year was the lowest for vehicles thefts since 1967. For the most part, this list has been dominated by pre-1997 cars that lack smart key technology, but as crooks get more high tech, thefts of late-model cars have been on the rise. Smart keys have a chip in the key or fob for improved theft protection, and with dealerships having access to the code for vehicle transponder keys, the NICB says that some thieves are getting around that by cajoling a dealership employee into handing over a car's key code. The bogus keymaking scheme is apparently only a fraction of theft scenarios, though: the organization tracked some 531,031 key code transactions (read: key replacement instances) in the first quarter of this year, and apparently, 277 vehicles related to those instances were stolen within a week of the transaction. In 2011, the top 10 most-stolen vehicles as indicated by the NICB Hot Wheels lists were: 1994 Honda Accord 1998 Honda Civic 2006 Ford F-Series 1991 Toyota Camry 2000 Dodge Caravan 1994 Acura Integra 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 2004 Dodge Ram 2002 Ford Explorer 1994 Nissan Sentra Since 2008, the 1994 Honda Accord has topped the list of most-stolen vehicles, but for the most part, the list always contains many of these same makes and models with slight changes in the model year. Uno de sus máximos exponentes es ICON, que ya ha pasado por esta página en varias ocasiones, tras enamorarnos con el Bronco y los FJ. La idea del restmod no es otra que restarurar un automóvil mítico y querido del pasado, pero hacerlo con tecnologías más actuales. Se busca que toda modificación quede encuadrada estéticamente en la época del vehículo, huyendo de "ideas tuneras" de poco gusto, pero al mismo tiempo se emplean mecánicas modernas y tecnologías como asistencia en la dirección o aire acondicionado.
