Monterey: 2012 Quail Motorsports Gathering is excellent, if you have the means
Filed under: Classics, Performance, Luxury It would be unfair to call the Quail Motorsports Gathering a car show. Doing so would be like saying Bruce Lee was sufficiently talented in the art of self defense. Every year the Quail Lodge in Carmel, California plays host to both manufacturers and collectors for a day, and this year saw a typically impressive range of featured models. From the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse to the SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition and the wild McLaren X-1 Concept to a passel of Shelby Cobra examples and a smattering of pre-war Alfa Romeo classics, the gathering serves as the chewy center of the Monterey weekend. Being forced to pick a personal favorite would be unduly cruel, though we found ourselves particularly smitten with a cherry Honda S800 and the carbon fiber Vintech 550 Tribute. Take a gander at the photo gallery above for a hint of the cars on hand.2012 Quail Motorsports Gathering is excellent, if you have the means originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 20:02:00 EST. Monterey: 1939 Bugatti Type 64 Coupe is incomplete perfection
Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Design/Style, Luxury In 1939, Jean Bugatti was hard at work on the Type 64 Coupe. A total of three examples were started, but only one received completed bodywork before the designer's death during a Type 57 road test. Now the Mullin Automotive Museum is out to finish what Bugatti started all those years ago. Using many of the same coachbuilding techniques employed by the French automaker in the late '30s, the museum has all but finished constructing the body. Naked of paint and lounging under the California sun, the Type 64 looks as if it has just rolled out of our ancestors' vision for the future. Its papillion doors and dramatic, reaching front fenders are as elegant now as they were when Bugatti first sketched them 73 years ago. Take a closer look for yourself by clicking through the photo gallery. And if you missed the Quail Motorsports Gathering, don't sweat it. The Mullin Automotive Museum plans to display the car at its Oxnard, California facility starting this fall.1939 Bugatti Type 64 Coupe is incomplete perfection originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 19:24:00 EST. Report: Tesla's Elon Musk calls Fisker Karma 'a mediocre product at a high price'
It is official: the gloves are off in the war of words between Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk and Fisker Automotive chief Henrik Fisker. Most of the verbal barbs came from Musk, who sat down to gossip with Automobile Magazine about archrival Fisker. The bad blood goes back a few years to when Tesla unsuccessfully sued Henrik Fisker for developing the Karma while under contract for the design of the Model S - basically paying someone to design his own car. Another, more newsworthy zinger was when Musk called out Fisker as a smart designer but one who does not understand the underlying technology problem. Musk said: The fundamental problem with Henrik Fisker - he is a designer or stylist... he thinks the reason we don't have electric cars is for lack of styling. This is not the reason. It's fundamentally a technology problem. At the same time, you need to make it look good and feel good, because otherwise you're going to have an impaired product. But just making something look like an electric car does not make it an electric car. Fisker has been scrambling to deal with fires and recalls connected to its A123 Systems partnership. Musk's biggest jab was directed at the flagship Karma: "It's a mediocre product at a high price." So what did Henrik Fisker have to say? In a written response to Automobile Magazine, Fisker stayed friendly, but did throw down the competitive gauntlet: range anxiety. "Obviously, Tesla and Fisker are appealing to two different customer bases with two totally different technologies. Tesla has pure EV and Fisker has a range-extended offering with no compromise on range," he wrote. Zing! Fisker thanked Musk for giving a nod to the good-looking Karma, which won Automobile's 2012 Design of the Year. He also made a statement to clear up the legal wrangle: Fisker won in court. A judge threw out the case and awarded costs to Fisker. Both companies have borrowed existing tech to bring their plug-ins to market. Karma needed Quantum Technologies to provide the plug-in hybrid drivetrain and used a General Motors-sourced 2.0 liter turbo four-cylinder engine. Tesla used the Lotus Elise to develop its first car, the Roadster. That said, the sparring judges would probably send more points to Tesla Motors, which sells its battery system and EV powertrain technology to companies like Toyota.Tesla's Elon Musk calls Fisker Karma 'a mediocre product at a high price' originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 18:28:00 EST. Why does GM continue to mention Chevy Volt sales forecast numbers?
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture The Chevrolet Volt is leading the pack of plug-in electric vehicles and has kicked butt on Nissan Leaf sales numbers but the goal for 2012 is to make 35,000 to 40,000 Volts. Through July, General Motors has sold 10,666 Volts in the U.S., which should get the automaker to 19,000 units sold this year. In Europe, through June, GM sold 2,861 Ampera plug-in hybrids, aka the European version of the Volt. The company recently started selling Chevy Volts in the rapidly growing China market where only 18 were sold through June, according to LMC Automotive. Add up those numbers and we see that about 25,000 to 30,000 Volts/Amperas could be sold worldwide this year. Wait a minute, though, what happened to hitting that 40,000-unit target? And why do we even know that number? In late June, CEO Dan Akerson said that GM's initial target - building 60,000 Volts this year, with 15,000 going to exports - was being downsized to 35,000 to 40,000 units. By continuing to give sales predictions, even decreased ones, Akerson serves to reminds us that, last year, GM failed to meet its initial target of selling 10,000 Volts. Will Akerson further downsize the forecast the next time he's asked? Why does GM continue to mention Chevy Volt sales forecast numbers? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 17:43:00 EST. Monterey: McLaren MP4-12C Spider touches down in North America
Filed under: Convertible, Performance The McLaren MP4-12C Spider has officially landed in North America. On display in Monterey, the convertible version of the British supercar boasts a retractable hardtop that can slip from fully up to completely stowed in around 17 seconds. Even with its roof structure stowed, the MP4-12C Spider remains a formidable performance car. The sprint to 60 mph takes just 3.1 seconds, and it tops out at 207 mph. Like its fixed-roof twin, the Spider makes 616 horsepower from a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine. As one Autoblog staffer commented, the car looks good enough to lick. Twice. Delicious? Yes. Cheap? Most certainly not. The McLaren MP4-12C Spider commands a price tag of $265,750, well north of the $241,800 the company asks for the coupe. Zabkab app brings the taxis to you in NYC
Filed under: Technology Looking to flag down a taxi in New York City? Well put down your hand and pick up your cell phone. The free Zabkab smartphone app not only allows users to see a map of cabs in their immediate vicinity, it also lets them digitally hail one. Better yet, it allows users to get a cab heading in their direction even before stepping foot outside... no more waiting in the rain to catch a taxi. An upcoming feature will make it easier to flag down a taxi at night by turning the screen bright yellow when the phone is tilted on its side. The article on Rundown.com says that while there is no cost to users, cabbies will pay between $10 to $15 a month for the service, but with the claim that New York City cabbies spend up to a quarter of their shift just looking for fares, this seems like a win-win for all parties. Currently, the Zabkab app is only available in the iPhone app store and Google Play for Android phones, but the company's website says that it'll be offered for Blackberry users soon.Zabkab app brings the taxis to you in NYC originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 16:31:00 EST. Monterey: Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is the same Bug with new paint
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Europe, Bugatti, Design/Style, Luxury We typically wince any time a manufacturer rolls out a special edition that's little more than a coat of paint, but we'll make an exception in this case. Bugatti parked the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse on the lawn of the Quail Motorsports Gathering, resplendent in its Bianco and Light Blue livery. The paint scheme is a tribute to the 1928 Type 37A. That open-wheel racer took the checkered flag at a number of grand prix events and now finds itself in the loving care of none other than Jay Leno himself. As with the rest of the Veyron Grand Sport models, the Vitesse can bolt to 62 mph from a dead stop in a physics-obliterating 2.6 seconds. The feat is possible thanks to a range of impressive mechanical systems, though the 1,200 horsepower forced-induction W16 at the heart of it certainly doesn't hurt. Check out the Vitesse in the gallery below and have a peek at the full press release as well.Continue reading Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is the same Bug with new paintBugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is the same Bug with new paint originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 15:25:00 EST.
Prueba: Shelby Cobra 289 FIA
Gallery: Prueba: Shelby Cobra 289 FIAContinue reading Prueba: Shelby Cobra 289 FIAPrueba: Shelby Cobra 289 FIA originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 13:40:00 EST. Monterey: Vintech 550 Tribute is a carbon fiber dream, not for sale
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Design/Style We caught up with the Vintech team at the Quail Motorsport Gathering to get a closer look at the team's 550 Tribute. As you may recall, the Paris-based company specializes in building concept cars for a number of manufacturers and wanted to show off its talents to the world at large. Under the attractive silver paint, every body panel on the 550 Tribute is carbon composite. Styling aside, the real stunner is in the engine bay. Vintech tucked an in-house designed and built 3.0-liter flat four-cylinder engine in front of a Porsche gearbox. The block was milled from a solid chunk of aluminum and is fed by two Weber carbs, though the company says it could just as easily use fuel injection for better efficiency. Despite having multiple offers for purchase, Vintech says the 550 Tribute is not for sale. Furthermore, it won't produce anything similar for mass consumption. And what did Porsche have to say about the one-off? According to Vintech, the German automaker stopped by to have a look at the retro-styled carbon fiber sports car and approved of the design and construction wholeheartedly.Vintech 550 Tribute is a carbon fiber dream, not for sale originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 13:32:00 EST. Video: Lego creates six mini Ferrari kits for Shell
Filed under: Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Ferrari, Toys/Games The best way we can think of to get customers into your gas stations is by offering complimentary fuel. The next best way? Lego Ferraris. For a limited time, Shell gas stations are offering six tiny Lego Ferrari kits when you fill up your tank. Unfortunately to take advantage of the offer, you need to gas up in Hong Kong. Though we don't yet have official word from Lego or Shell, there doesn't seem to be a plan to make a similar offer here in the States. But you can virtually build and drive the six models on Shell's Website. Choose from the Scuderia Ferrari Truck, an F40, 150° Italia, 458 Italia, FXX, or a 250 GT Berlinetta. If virtual Lego building isn't enough for you, these should materialize on eBay soon enough. Check out Shell's promotional video of the deal below.
Gallery: Porsche 928 H50 1987 Share TweetPorsche se lleva a Monterey el 928 H50 originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 12:31:00 EST. Monterey: 2013 Viper GTS Launch Edition takes a bow at Quail Motorsports Gathering
Filed under: Coupe, PerformanceChrysler took the time to show off the first special edition version of the 2013 SRT Viper. Dipped in the same GTS blue paint as the original Viper, the GTS Launch Edition also wears the same Bright White racing stripes from nose to tail. Chrysler says the combination will only be available on Launch Edition cars and that the final production will be limited. How limited? The company isn't saying, though we imagine you'll need to know your local dealer pretty well to bring one of these machines home. Inside, each Viper GTS Launch Edition comes with its own dash-mounted identification plaque as well as Black Laguna leather seats with contrast stitching. An Alcantara headliner and white-face guages with silver trim complete the look. The Launch Edition is the first Viper to wear the redesigned Viper logo. Chrysler calls the design "Stryker," and the newest snake follows in the footsteps of the original "Sneaky Pete" and "Fang" emblems. Having done well with the Note so far since its introduction as a 2006 model, the revamped global five-door has taken the lead in providing design cues for other models, like our Versa hatchback. Nissan has said the Versa will get "features tailored to its markets in North and South America." We don't know how that means it will differ from the Note, but we hope the Versa's launch comes with water cannon projections, too. You can watch it all in the video below.Continue reading Nissan Note makes big splash at global debutNissan Note makes big splash at global debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 10:29:00 EST. Prueba: BMW 740d xDrive Pack M
Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Ford There are no certainties on the auction circuit, though any association with the late Steve McQueen can almost guarantee an upward nudge on the final bid. Throw in a provenance that includes multiple racing wins, work in one of the most beloved films in automotive history along with an iconic livery and you've got the 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf/Mirage Lightweight Racing car seen here. The car took the checkered flag at Spa in 1967 when it was still Mirage M.10003, becoming the first car to wear the powder blue and marigold to victory in the process. In 1968, this machine underwent a slew of changes at the hands of J.W.A. in England, making it GT40 chassis number P/1074. After a few more wins on the racing circuit, the car was sold to David Brown of Tampa, Florida in 1970. Brown leased the GT40 to Steve McQueen's Solar Productions for work as a camera car in McQueen's now-legendary film, Le Mans. In order to go to work, the car's roof section was entirely removed, which adversely impacted both rigidity and aerodynamics. After five months of filming, the car was sold. Since then, it's gone through a handful of other owners and a complete restoration to racing glory. At Friday's RM Auctions, the '68 GT40 brought home a lofty $11 million final bid, setting an all-time record for an American car at auction in the process. The previous title holder was a 1931 Dueseneberg Model J Long-Wheelbase Coupe, which sold for $10.34 million. Take a look below for the full release and a video of the car in action.Continue reading 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf/Mirage sets auction record at $11 million1968 Ford GT40 Gulf/Mirage sets auction record at $11 million originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 09:22:00 EST.
Toyota Prius V lamely says 'mass matters' with How Stuff Works commercials
Filed under: Hybrid, Toyota, Videos Hey there science fans! Want to learn more about the nature of the universe and its elements, and find out what's cool about the new Toyota Prius V hatchback hybrid? Then we've got three science lab commercials for you... In the first episode, "Science on the Go: Mass Matters," Ben Bowlin from How Stuff Works (a Discovery video channel) experiments with his mobile lab, the Prius V. It starts with solid mass, which has a rigid set structure, and then the hybrid gets loaded up with plastic balls - 9,000 of them. But, you just might be asking, happens when we store something that doesn't have fixed volume or shape? That's when we move on to the second episode about liquid mass - this time it's about finding what kinds of liquids can be placed into one cubic foot. So the main point of this commercial is that - surprise! - you can cram more liquids into your Prius V than solids. You can load 18,000 apples in juice form into your Prius V, and you could fill up the car with over 500 gallons of gasoline. Since the Prius V gets 44 mpg in the city, you could drive it 22,000 miles - just shy of being able to drive around the earth. If, you know, oh, forget it - you know. The third episode goes to Ben's favorite element - plasma. Plasma is like gas, but it's ionized, meaning it has free roaming electrons carrying the current and generating the magnetic field. It shows up in flashes of lightning, in fluorescent bulbs and in the sun, which is a "gi-normous" ball of plasma. Bringing this back to planet earth, the question becomes: How many plasma flat screen TVs can you fit into a Prius V? It depends on the different types of televisions you load, of course. You can watch a lot of TV shows, but if you own a Prius V, you'll be too busy driving. Okay, let's see, what can we take away here? U.S. students do lag behind other nations in test scores and gaining solid fundamentals of science and mathematics, but these "Science on the Go" TV spots probably won't help since they lack a couple of things: namely, educational value and marketing merit. Nonetheless, you can watch them below.Continue reading Toyota Prius V lamely says 'mass matters' with How Stuff Works commercialsToyota Prius V lamely says 'mass matters' with How Stuff Works commercials originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 09:03:00 EST.
