Video: Crazy woman tightrope walks between two moving semis to sell Volvo Trucks
Filed under: Etc., Videos We can think of plenty of good uses for long stretches of empty highway under construction, but performing a death-defying tightrope stunt between two semis is nowhere on our list. Now this isn't just any regular stunt, as Volvo Trucks enlisted world record-holding funambulist Faith Dickey and Hollywood stunt coordinator Peter Pedrero to come up with a video that helps shows off the "precision and control" of its new FH series semi trucks. (Yes, even truck companies are now trying to use viral videos to peddle their wares.) It wouldn't be an exciting video if she walked a tightrope between the trucks as they were sitting still, and it obviously still wasn't good enough to film the stunt with the trucks simply driving on a flat, boring airport runway. Instead, the trucks are cruising down a deserted stretch of highway in Croatia barreling toward a divided tunnel in a mountain face at just under 80 km/h (close to 50 mph). Dickey is wearing a safety cable in case she falls off during the stunt, but with each truck heading into a separate tunnel, the tether won't help much if the rope breaks. While you're watching the video below to see how Dickey and the new Volvo Trucks perform, we'll be on the phone with the passenger car side of Volvo to see if we can spend some time on this same Croatian stretch of road with a Polestar-tuned S60.Continue reading Crazy woman tightrope walks between two moving semis to sell Volvo TrucksCrazy woman tightrope walks between two moving semis to sell Volvo Trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 19:58:00 EST. Jaguar's Mad Men bump, and how the brand unknowingly helped write the episodes
Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Marketing/Advertising, Jaguar, Luxury Remember the story line in this year's Mad Men? The acclaimed series on AMC about an ad agency in mid-1960s New York City [SPOILER ALERT] depicted the partners going after and ultimately landing the Jaguar account. Today's Jaguar Cars did not advertise in the series, nor did it pay for any product or brand placement. But, according to spokesman Stuart Schorr, the company received more searches and traffic to its website during the episodes than companies that actually advertised during the series. While not all of the story line was favorable to Jaguar, the company was certainly content with the attention, so much so that it ran an ad in Advertising Age congratulating the producers and cast. One of the episodes showed a British account man at the fictional Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, Lane Pryce, was so distraught over being asked for his resignation, that he tried to kill himself by asphyxiating himself in the Jag E-Type his wife had given him. As Pryce started the car, the engine wouldn't turn over. All too typical of a '60s vintage Jag. Turns out that writers or researchers for the show had called Jaguar anonymously, posing as students, seeking information about Jaguar dealerships of the mid 1960s, specifically how they looked. They also found their way to vice president of brand vice president David Pryor to ask, "How do you make an E-Type not start?" One might have glibly said, "Turn the key," but Pryor told the caller that loosening the wires to the distributor would certainly do the trick. It wasn't until the episode aired did Pryor and Schorr put it together, and realized they had contributed to the seminal episode of the series this year. Jaguar still hasn't spent any ad money on Mad Men, but on August 17 the company will co-host a party at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with Playboy Magazine at which Mad Men star Christina Hendricks will be the special guest.Jaguar's Mad Men bump, and how the brand unknowingly helped write the episodes originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 19:29:00 EST. Cadillac will debut production ELR at next year's Pebble Beach Concours
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Cadillac Rumors about the 2014 model-year debut of the confirmed-for-production Cadillac ELR extended-range plug-in hybrid coupe got a little boost today following news out of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance that a production version of the ELR will be introduced there in 2013. According to Left Lane News, the confirmation came at Pebble Beach from Cadillac marketing VP Don Butler, who also said that next-gen versions of the CTS and Escalade are coming next year. As we already know, the plug-in powertrain in the ELR is an evolution of the one used in the Chevrolet Volt, with a longer electric-only range. After starting sales in North America, the ELR - which was first seen at the 2009 North American Auto Show in Detroit as the Converj concept - will likely go on sale in Europe and China. It should cost less than $57,400.Cadillac will debut production ELR at next year's Pebble Beach Concours originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 19:25:00 EST. That didn't happen this year: between the crashes, the electric racers and the broken records it was a year that won't soon depart from memory. The biggest record of them all was taken by Rhys Millen, who took his 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe race car from bottom to top in 9:46.164, relegating Pikes Peak rookie Romain Dumas to second place by the whisper thin margin of 17/1000s of a second. Confused about the C-Max Energi abilities? Ask the chief engineer
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, MPGTo get an accurate reading of how a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle performs in battery-only mode and in overall extended range, two experiences are useful: lots of behind-the-wheel driving time under various driving conditions (altitude, climate temperature, average speed driven, stop-start, etc.) or a detailed conversation with the chief engineer who designed the car. Brad Berman, editor of PluginCars.com and HybridCars.com, got a bit of both. He had a conversation with John Davis, Ford's chief engineer for the C-Max in North America, that clarified how the upcoming C-Max Energi differs from the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid in battery only and extended range modes. Berman issued a mea culpa after having criticized Ford for seemingly hyping up the superior capabilities of the C-Max Energi. "I learned that the C-Max Energi is indeed substantially more capable of driving purely as an EV than the Prius Plug-in," Berman writes. Berman drove the Prius Plug-in Hybrid during a three-day loan and found it could go about 11 miles on all-electric driving, which matches the official EPA estimate, versus Ford's claim that the real number is six miles of battery only range. The distinction that Berman was able to clarify in talking to Davis is how to determine the vehicle's true "keep this thing in all-electric mode." Ford's "EV Now" button in the C-Max Energi allows the driver to access the battery-only driving experience better compared to the Prius Plug-in Hybrid's "relatively wimpy all-electric experience." The "EV Now" feature makes the C-Max Energi much more like a Chevy Volt, Berman says. C-Max Energi drivers also have the option of using its "EV Later" button, which is similar to the Volt's Mountain Mode, to save battery power for later use, or they can keep the plug-in in "EV Auto" mode, in which the car operates more like the conventional C-Max hybrid.Confused about the C-Max Energi abilities? Official: Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mph
Filed under: Motorsports, Hybrid, Sedan, Volkswagen After blasting down the Bonneville Salt Flats at 185 miles per hour, the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is now the "world's fastest hybrid," according to VW. The modified Jetta Hybrid was driven by Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago, and the official speed was 185.394 mph (298.363 kph). That is "the fastest speed ever achieved by a production-based hybrid car on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats." Production-based here still means that the powertrain was modified by Volkswagen engineers in Germany. We can see aerodynamic wheels, but exact changes that were implemented were not described, only that the car was "run according to SCTA rules." The production Jetta Hybrid gets 45 miles per gallon and has a 0-60 time of 9.0 seconds. It uses a four-cylinder, 1.4-liter turbocharged, 150-horsepower, TSI gasoline engine mated to a 20-kW (27-hp) electric motor. Sure, 185 mph is impressive, but it's not that far ahead of the record set in May by a huge hybrid Volvo truck in the flying kilometer: 165 mph. We suggest a head-to-head.Continue reading Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mphVolkswagen Jetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mph originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 18:00:00 EST. Official: Rolls-Royce debuts Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection at Pebble Beach
Filed under: Coupe, Rolls-Royce, Design/Style, Luxury As if its cars aren't already exclusive enough on their own merit, Rolls-Royce is debuting an ultra-limited production version of the Phantom Coupe at Pebble Beach today. With only 35 cars expected to be built, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection celebrates Charles Stewart Rolls - Rolls-Royce co-founder - who had a passion for flying and was only the second man in Britain to have a pilot's license before his death in 1910. Unique elements of the Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection include the Aviator Grey exterior hue accented with a matte finish on the grille, hood and window frame. Setting the aeronautical theme of the car, the interior is fitted with exclusive features like the matte-black instrument gauges, an aviation-grade clock in the middle of the dash and a lower dash veneer that mimics the look of an old wooden airplane propeller. Even the transmission tunnel boasts an anodized aluminum cover with exposed torx-head bolts which attempts to match the fuselage of Rolls' award-winning (and Rolls-Royce-powered) Supermarine S6B aircraft. No detail was overlooked in creating a truly unique atmosphere for the Aviator Collection so much so that it has a leather-lined glove box with the following quote from Rolls himself embossed into it: "The power of flight is as a fresh gift from the Creator, the greatest treasure yet given to man." Rolls-Royce has not announced any pricing for the 1-of-35 Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection, but you know how the saying goes: "If you have to ask..."Scroll down to read the press release.Continue reading Rolls-Royce debuts Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection at Pebble BeachRolls-Royce debuts Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 17:31:00 EST.

Monterey: 2012 Concorso Italiano celebrates Lamborghini, Fiat, Bertone
Filed under: Concept Cars, Europe, Celebrities, Design/StyleShelby isn't the only company celebrating a major anniversary in Monterey this year. Lamborghini marked its 50th year in business, and the 2012 Concorso Italiano is packed with Raging Bulls from every era of company's history. While the show serves as a showcase for all Italian makes, the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch always sees a wide cross section of manufacturers and models from around the globe. This year, Fiat showed off the new 500T as part of the brand's 55th anniversary, and the show grounds were filled with a rash of classic Fiat models. Those included one very gorgeous Cinquenento Abarth, as well as a few examples of the new 500. Finally, Bertone is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2012, and the Concorso Italiano featured plenty of concepts and production models by the design firm. Even the Nuccio Concept showed up on the green in all of its 80s futuristic splendor. As you may recall, the last time we saw that machine, it was lounging under the lights of the Geneva Motor Show. U.S. Appeals Court throws out E15 lawsuit against EPA
Filed under: Ethanol, Legislation and Policy, USA In late 2010, the EPA was sued by a collection of grocery, auto and petroleum industry association groups over the issue of increasing the nationally available ethanol blend from E10 - a mix of 90 percent gasoline and 10 percent ethanol - to E15. Today, that lawsuit was thrown out by a U.S. Appeals Court on the grounds that the trade groups did not have the right to sue, Bloomberg reports. The trade organizations claimed that the shift to E15 would drive up "the price of food and gasoline and harm engines," Bloomberg writes, but the judge did not see that any harm was done. In his decision, Circuit Judge David Sentelle wrote: Petitioners have to demonstrate that EPA's actions-in particular, approving E15 via partial waivers-have caused any one of their members an injury in fact for which we can provide redress in this action. Each industry group advances a theory of standing, but none is in fact adequate to meet the burden of establishing standing under Article III. You can read the entire decision here. A director for the American Petroleum Institute emailed Bloomberg to say, "Today's court decision is a big loss for consumers, for safety and for our environment." E15 was officially approved for sale in the U.S. last month, and comes with a new set of rules.U.S. Appeals Court throws out E15 lawsuit against EPA originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 16:29:00 EST. Monterey: Shelby Cobra honored with historic display at Monterey Motorsports Reunion
Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Performance, Ford, Misc. Auto Shows, Racing It's been 50 years since Carroll Shelby stitched together the first Cobra. In the intervening half-century, the little British car with a big American engine established itself as an icon of the automotive industry. To celebrate the car's golden anniversary, Shelby American and Ford assembled a collection of some of the most historically significant Cobra models in existence at Laguna Seca as part of this year's Monterey festivities. In addition to CSX2000, the first Cobra built, visitors to the track have a chance to get within whiffing distance of cars like CSX2002. The little red roadster was the third Cobra to roll out of Shelby's workshop and served as the first factory Cobra race car. Peter Brock, Ken Miles and Dave MacDonald all had a stint behind the wheel, and the car functioned as a competition test mule that would help shape future Cobra models for years to come. A total of 12 cars make up the collection, including the very first big-block car, CSX2196. Miles plopped a 427 into a 289 chassis for the very first time in an effort to best the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport racers competing with Shelby at the time. The trick worked, and Miles set a precedent for a long line of 427-powered snakes. Even with its big engine, CSX2196 is said to weigh in at just 1,800 lbs thanks to its light-weight "fliptop" body. Both the front and back-sections can flip up to reveal the chassis and suspension underneath. Check out the gallery for a full look at all the cars on hand. You may also take a look at the complete press release below.Continue reading Shelby Cobra honored with historic display at Monterey Motorsports ReunionShelby Cobra honored with historic display at Monterey Motorsports Reunion originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 16:29:00 EST.
Official: BMW Zagato Roadster breaks cover in Pebble Beach
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, BMW, Misc. Auto Shows, LuxuryBMW and Zagato decided that their initial collaboration on the Zagato Coupe, which debuted just three months ago at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, was so successful that an encore was called for. The result is this, the Zagato Roadster, which was conceived, designed and produced in the remarkably short time of six weeks to be ready for its debut this weekend at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Perhaps the haste with which the Z4-based Zagato Roadster came into being doesn't impress you because it is, after all, a droptop version of the Coupe, most of which has been carried over intact. There are, however, differences, particularly out back where the entire rear end required a redesign. Truth be told, we favor the Roadster's design a little more than the Coupe's, which places so much of its visual mass over the rear axle. The Roadster looks more balanced between its wheels, and those brown leather-wrapped roll bars are simply to die for. BMW says that Zagato's trademark double-bubble roof has even been preserved in the car's silhouette with the roof in place, though has failed to supply us with any images as proof. No matter, as we're planning to run across the Zagato Coupe on the greens of Pebble Beach soon enough, and will be back with our own live gallery.Continue reading BMW Zagato Roadster breaks cover in Pebble BeachBMW Zagato Roadster breaks cover in Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 15:44:00 EST. Monterey: 2012 Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance snakes its way down the California coast [w/video]
Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Celebrities As much as we adore the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, there's a lesser-known and considerably more entertaining portion of the show: the Tour d'Elegance. Where as the councours gives onlookers a chance to take in some of the world's most rare and valuable cars as the machines sit parked on the lush green of the Pebble Beach golf course, the tour shows off the entrants as they were meant to be enjoyed. Those owners willingly hop behind the wheel and fire up their engines for a quick jaunt down 17 Mile Drive and the Pacific Coast Highway. Let us be the first to tell you that there's nothing like the experience of seeing, hearing and feeling these cars as they saunter their way up Highway 1. Led by Sir Stirling Moss in a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, the tour featured a hefty number of original Shelby Cobra models. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the snake that Carroll built, and as such, the V8 British-American half-breed is one of the featured models of the 2012 concours. Saturday will see 45 Cobra racers take to Laguna Seca to go fender to fender. Stay tuned. BMW Z4 Zagato Roadster Concept onthuld

Report: 2013 Nissan Leaf will go 25% further, could cost a lot less
Filed under: Car Buying, Hatchback, Nissan, Electric Months ago, we heard that the U.S. version of the 2013 Nissan Leaf would go farther per charge in cold weather thanks to a better heater. This was about the Leaf that will be made in Smyrna, Tennessee starting later this year. A new report on Inside EVs (based on the Japanese language Sankei Biz site) says that the new Leaf, at least the version destined for sale in Japan, will have its range extended to over 250 kilometers (155 miles) in any weather. Of course, since that is on the lenient Japanese test cycle, it doesn't mean that U.S. drivers will get double their range (the Leaf is rated at 73 miles by the EPA). Instead, the new Leaf should get a range improvement of around 25 percent, which would translate to around 91 miles of EPA range, thanks to more efficient motors and better batteries. More interesting - since we expect incremental improvements with each generation of vehicles, especially when EVs are concerned - is that Nissan is also considering an entry-level Leaf for release by the end of the year. If Sankei Biz is correct, this model would start at 2.5 million yen ($31,500 USD at today's exchange rates) compared to the current version's starting price of 3.7 million yen ($46,600). Inside EVs notes that, "A similar price reduction in North America would price this new base Nissan LEAF at $26,600." Sankei Biz says the updates are coming a year earlier than planned in order to boost sales. A before-incentive price of $26,600 would certainly do that, wouldn't it? We've asked Nissan for any sort of confirmation or denial of these reports and will update once we hear something.2013 Nissan Leaf will go 25% further, could cost a lot less originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 14:16:00 EST.
Jetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mph
Filed under: Hybrid, Volkswagen, Racing After blasting down the Bonneville Salt Flats at 185 miles per hour, the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is now the "world's fastest hybrid," according to VW. The modified Jetta Hybrid was driven by Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago, and the official speed was 185.394 mph (298.363 kph). That makes the car, "the fastest speed ever achieved by a production-based hybrid car on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats." Production-based here still means that the powertrain was modified by Volkswagen engineers in Germany. 185 mpg is impressive, sure, but it's not that far behind the record set in May by a huge hybrid Volvo truck in the flying kilometer: 165 mph.Continue reading Jetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mphJetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mph originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 13:57:00 EST. Monterey: One-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra debuts as tribute to Carroll
Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Ford The Monterey Peninsula is celebrating all things Shelby this week as part of the company's 50th anniversary celebration. The Cobra in particular will be a part of many events including the Pebble Beach Concours and the Monterey Motorsports Reunion happening at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The Shelby celebration is also especially meaningful since founder Carroll Shelby passed away back in May. As a tribute to the legendary racer and car builder, Shelby American, Ford Motor Company and Ford Racing have teamed up to build a very special tribute Mustang. Called the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra, the car features a custom widened body that fits massive 13-inch-wide wheels fitted with a set of 345-series tires. All of that extra traction is quite necessary, as a 4.0-liter Whipple supercharger has been fitted atop the 5.8-liter V8 to produce 850 horsepower. The look of the car is completed with traditional Shelby livery: Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes. The 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra is currently on display at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion this weekend, and Shelby says that they plan to tour the car around the country for the next several months before it will be auctioned off for charity. Scroll down to read the official announcement from Shelby.Continue reading One-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra debuts as tribute to CarrollOne-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra debuts as tribute to Carroll originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 13:30:00 EST.
