Video: R&T improves Scion FR-S performance with a tire swap
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Scion, Subaru On paper, the Scion FR-S is a great little performance car with its light curb weight, peppy engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, but as Road & Track recently found out about the car, none of that matters on the track if you have the wrong tires. The magazine's staffers found the Scion and Subaru cars were out-handled by competitors like the Mazda Miata and Hyundai Genesis Coupe, so they tried a simple tire swap on the FR-S to see if replacing the stock rubber with something with a bit more grip could help the matter. In stock form, both the BRZ and FR-S come with Michelin Primacy summer touring tires, which are apparently tuned more for low rolling resistance than grip. Now, we're sure there will be plenty of FR-S and BRZ owners who will never take their cars to a track, so these stock tires help to optimize fuel economy and longevity, but for those who do want to have some autocross fun with their new Toyobaru coupe, then what?R&T took an FR-S to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch with three wheel and tire combinations, and put the car up against a MazdaSpeed3 and a Subaru WRX. First up were the stock tires, which put it almost two seconds behind the Mazda and a second behind the Subaru with a lap time of 1:29.3. Next, the car's 17-inch wheels were wrapped in Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs extreme performance summer tires, shaving a full two seconds off the FR-S' track time and making it the fastest of the bunch with a time of 1:27.0. Finally, they tested the FR-S with the same type of tires on lightweight 18-inch wheels, but while the time around the track dipped a little (1:27.6), this wheel and tire combination was the best on the skidpad with a 0.96g. An interesting note, the Dunlops are obviously much stickier and they cost less than the Michelins, but since they are built for performance, there is no treadlife warranty (according to Tire Rack, where R&T got their tires and prices). Meanwhile, the stock Michelin tires aren't as capable at the track, but they come with a treadlife warranty of up to six years or 45,000 miles. But he's also going to be doing some hat-in-hand work, according to a report from Reuters.Posawatz knows what it takes to get an electric car to market, but Fisker is some $150 million short of cash it needs before it launches the Atlantic, according to the report. One of Fisker's directors told the news organization that bolstering the balance sheet is necessary not only to cover operating expenses, but also to fund more product development. Fisker's financial shortfall is the effect of losing over half its $529 million loan from the Department of Energy, according to the report. Official: 2013 Jaguar XK gets new Touring trim, Dynamic Pack
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Jaguar, Luxury The naturally-aspirated V8 that only gets a single application in the combined 2013 Jaguar XF and XJ lines soldiers on in the 2013 XK (a 2012 model is pictured, but there are no syling changes), with four of the eight XKs available from next year fitted with the 385-horsepower engine. Yes, that's eight XKs, instead of the six that are currently available - a Touring Coupe and Convertible join the family at lower the price point. Single-spec models, the only options for the Touring models will be the outside and inside colors. Otherwise, they'll come with an Aero Package and 19-inch wheels outside, Satin Rosewood veneer, heated front seats and the Jaguar audio system inside, and a Morzine cloth headliner in the coupe instead of the Jaguar Suedecloth on the upper trims. At $79,000, the Touring Coupe takes $5,500 off the entry price to the XK family. The Touring Convertible goes for $85,000, just $500 more than the 385-hp XK Coupe. To give the new models some space, the 2013 XK Coupe will come standard on 20-inch wheels instead of the 19-inchers of yore. Whereas Meridian supplies the top-level audio in the sedans, the sports cars stick with 525-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio. Customers can go further with the order book for free, with the Special Order options offered at no charge. A Portfolio Package tweaks things further with chrome mirror caps and grille, plus a suite of recommended colors for the exterior; inside, it gets either a Navy or Truffle theme, a leather headliner like the XKR-S, leather-trimmed floor mats and stainless steel pedals and sill plates. The XKR Convertible gets the option of the Dynamic Pack previously exclusive to the XKR Coupe, with its Adaptive Dynamics and sportier suspension, aero add-ons and a bump in top speed on the track to 174 miles per hour. The limited-to-100 XKR-S, introduced only a year ago, remains the same. So, for that matter, do the list prices for the XK range, the 2013 models not shifting a penny from the $84,500 XK Coupe to the $138,000 XKR-S Convertible. Ford invests $135 million in electrified vehicles

Ford announced yesterday that it now has some 1,000 engineers devoted to electrified vehicles, most of whom work "under one roof" at the facility. The 285,000-square-foot research and development lab used to be known as the Advanced Engineering Center, but has now been renamed the Ford Advanced Electrification Center. Ford has already hired 60 engineers to populate the effort this year, which carries a total investment of $135 million. That's a nice chunk of change to spend on battery tech. Desde el pasado mes de julio, aquellos residentes en Cantabria que quieran adquirir un vehículo de hasta 30.000 € podrán acogerse a un plan de ayudas directas que reduce el coste del vehículo en 1.200 €, siempre y cuando se entregase un vehículo usado. Según los datos de matriculaciones del pasado mes de julio, las cuentas no salen ni con las ayudas. En relación al mismo mes del año anterior las ventas cayeron en más de un 22% y la afluencia a los concesionarios tampoco se ha visto incrementada. Official: SRT unveils 2013 Viper GTS Launch Edition

Taking its place among historic automobiles on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this weekend will be the 2013 SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition model, wearing the iconic GTS Blue paint and dual white stripes of prior Viper coupe launches from both 1996 and 2006. The Viper GTS Launch Edition also features exclusive five-spoke polished forged-aluminum wheels that evoke, but also evolve, the wheel designs of those prior launch models. These special Vipers also get a serialized dash plaque placed inside their cabins to increase collectibility, and their interiors will be swathed in Black Laguna leather with contrast stitching. Production will be limited, but Chrysler has refrained from saying how many Launch Editions will be built. BMW ya está ultimando los detalles del próximo Serie 4 GrandCoupé, un modelo que contará con portón posterior y una caída de techo muy pronunciada. La nueva Serie 4 derivará directamente de los Serie 3 pero manteniendo ciertas distancias. La gama estará formada por las carrocerías Coupé, Cabrio y GrandCoupé, y complementarán a los actuales Serie 3 Berlina, Touring y el próximo GT. El lanzamiento comercial del nuevo Serie 4 GrandCoupé debería producirse a finales del año que viene o principios del 2014. De su estética principalmente dependerá su éxito, aunque si resulta tan atractivo como el Audi A5 Sportback seguro que BMW se apuntará un tanto. Official: MacGyver thinks the Mercedes-Benz Citan is the right tool for any job [w/video]

Turns out MacGyver, aka actor Richard Dean Anderson (click the image above to enlarge), wasn't to be left out of the action, having been named the "hero" to help sell the Mercedes-Benz Citan. For those of you who don't even know who MacGyver is, he was the protagonist in a US. television show that ran from 1985 to 1992, his signature trait being that he could fix anything with little more than some duct tape, a paper clip and a piece of string. That is what makes him the perfect spokesman for the Citan, advertised by Mercedes as being "the perfect tool for every job." There's a press release below that speaks briefly about the Citan's merits, such as its three different available lengths and asymmetrical rear doors. But Mercedes doesn't half-ass things, and what's even better than the presser is the trailer for a film called MacGyver und der neue Citan that will be released September 18. It's in German so we don't even know what they're saying, but it looks awesome. Why Bob Lutz is wrong about A123 Systems' new Chinese investor

Regarding your guest column in Forbes lambasting the federal government for granting battery maker A123 Systems a Department of Energy grant and allowing a Chinese company to step in as an A123 investor/owner: Get over it! While A123 Systems is in a desperate situation with financial losses related to the Fisker Karma - which keeps having problems - when it comes to federal financial support and making deals with Chinese investors, there are a few things you left out. For example: your own management role at General Motors when the federal government executed a large ownership stake investment and required GM to strip down the dealership network. Whether or not the feds should stay out of corporate bailouts or grant DOE grants and loans to greentech companies may be worthwhile to debate, but it is unavoidably part of the landscape these days, for better or worse. Another irony is your criticism of A123 for cutting a deal with Chinese auto parts company Wanxiang since you say doing business with the Chinese government and corporations is bad for U.S. business and autonomy. You write: "If we can't get our act together soon, the country will 'go Chinese' company by company, institution by institution, industry after industry. There will be no need for a military conflict against an overwhelmingly superior force: the Chinese will simply buy the country, a little piece at a time." The U.S. is no longer the sole dominant force in global economics and military prowess. I think this is just another aspect of seeing the global auto industry, and the global economy, as it really is. Chinese automaker Geely Group stepped in when Ford stepped out in 2010, and Ford and General Motors have partnerships with Chinese manufacturers selling products to the rapidly growing China auto market. There's also the part about global automakers setting up production facilities in China and selling their own products in the market. Whether or not A123 Systems survives, the federal grant and Chinese investment do seem to be pretty logical in the context of what's been happening lately. 2013 Dodge Durango recalled for faulty airbag module

An incorrect airbag module was installed in roughly 1,500 of the early-production, seven-passenger Durango models. According to Chrysler, these vehicles received mislabeled modules intended for the five-passenger version. In a crash, this could lead to the side-curtain airbag not deploying for the third row. Chrysler says most of the vehicles that were incorrectly assembled have yet to be sold, but those that have will be repaired by dealers starting in September. Video: Pikes Peak crash survivors speak in first interview, new on-car footage released
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Mitsubishi By now you've heard about the most horrific crash that happened at this year's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. We've shown you the footage of driver Jeremy Foley and navigator Yuri Kouznetsov flying off the course while rounding the same corner at Mile 16 called Devil's Playground that claimed another car last year. We've also shown you what remains of the Mitsubishi Evolution 8 tuned by Evolution Dynamics that saved both Jeremy and Yuri's life as they rolled 14 times down the 45-degree rock-strewn slope. Not only did Jeremy and Yuri survive, but they emerged remarkably unscathed, which you can see for yourself in their first interview since the accident with Savannah Guthrie on the TODAY morning show. Besides some scrapes and bruises, the only visual evidence that either of these guys tumbled down a mountain is the sling that Yuri's wearing for his dislocated shoulder. In the interview, you'll hear the men recall the incident in their own words, as well as Jeremy's heart-wrenching admission of guilt for feeling responsible for Yuri's injuries. A new angle of the crash taken from a camera mounted on the outside of the car is also shown. McCall's Motorworks Revival kicks off the Monterey weekend in style

This year, attendees were treated to a buffet of lust-worthy metal both new and old, including one very special treat. CSX2000, the very first Shebly Cobra assembled by Carroll Shelby himself, drove in under its own power and a distinguished cloud of oil smoke. Long live the snake. Two historically-significant Ford GT40 models showed up on the tarmac as well, including the very first MKI road car ever produced and the very last MK1 race car ever built. If those aren't good enough to get your mouth watering, the oldest Corvette Stingray in existence stopped by to rub elbows with the personal jets on the runway as well. The third Stingray constructed, the '63 Convertible boasts hand-laid fiberglass and a 327-cube V8 under the hood. It wasn't all old American metal, though. Both Ferrari and Lamborghini showed up with some of their more lust-worthy hardware, as did Koenigsegg, though it was Pagani that stole the show. The Italian automaker displayed two Huayra models. Baojun Lechi, el segundo modelo de la firma china

Tras el lanzamiento del sedán 630, ahora la firma pone a la venta el Lechi, una variante ligeramente modificada del veterano Matiz de primera generación. Según el comunicado de prensa oficial, el nuevo Lechi se ofrecerá con un motor mejorado capaz de reducir el consumo hasta los 5,1 L/100. Desconocemos la cilindrada, pero casi con seguridad será el mismo bloque de un litro que llevaba el original. Baojun afirma que este urbano ha recibido una profunda actualización que afecta al 54% del vehículo, si bien estéticamente no parece que las modificaciones hayan sido importantes. La comercialización en China del Baojun Lechi comenzó ayer y se ha convertido en uno de los modelos más asequibles del mercado. El lanzamiento de este modelo no implica cambio alguno en la oferta de Chevrolet, que mantiene el Spark como opción asequible. Report: Fisker needs $150 million to build Atlantic

But he's also going to be doing some hat-in-hand work, according to a report from Reuters.Posawatz knows what it takes to get an electric car to market, but Fisker is some $150 million short of cash it needs before it launches the Atlantic, according to the report. One of Fisker's directors told the news organization that bolstering the balance sheet is necessary not only to cover operating expenses, but also to fund more product development. Fisker's financial shortfall is the effect of losing over half its $529 billion loan from the Department of Energy, according to the report.
