So says Kevin Dubois, the man behind Evolution Dynamics, the company that provided the Mitsubishi Evolution 8 for driver Jeremy Foley and co-driver Yuri to take up the mountain at Pikes Peak. As you may already know, things didn't go quite as planned. Foley and the Evo careened off the course at Mile 16 and were air-lifted to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, neither the driver or his passenger were seriously injured in the accident, and that's due to the strength of the roll cage and the well-thought-out safety measures taken ahead of the event. As you can see in the gallery, just about every bit of the car was damaged in the crash - even the passenger seat was ripped from the eighth-inch steel plate welded to the car's floor - but the safety cage mostly held up. Amazingly, the Evo's turbocharged engine, along with the transmission and transfer case, survived the carnage to die another day. Want to relive the crash one more time? Verbal fisticuffs and head butting would be more accurate descriptions, with members of Congress and automakers joining the squabble with the federal regulatory agencies. During the negotiation process, foreign automakers took umbrage with more favorable treatment domestic makers seemed to be receiving by the White House. While the White House did keep the process quiet and off the public radar, it was more like a boiling cauldron behind the scenes, according to new reports. On Friday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee's Republican majority staff released a report stating foreign automakers had bitterly complained about how they were treated. Jim Lentz, the U.S. sales chief for Toyota, said Toyota executives in Japan feel like, "they've been screwed" by the mandate that nearly doubles the fuel economy standards by 2025 and what they see as preferential treatment given to larger trucks, calling it a "second bailout for Detroit." The White House defended the deal, with White House spokesman Clark Stevens saying the historic standards for 2017-2025 model year light-duty vehicles will save families $1.7 trillion dollars at the pump and dramatically reduce fuel consumption. More than a dozen automakers, along with the United Auto Workers, the state of California (which, at that time, made things more difficult with its even more stringent standards), and environmental organizations, supported the mandate, Steven said. Toyota wanted a few things out of the deal - credits for hybrid electric vehicles, a category in which the company dominates, more flexibility to use car credits for meeting truck standards, and inclusion of the Toyota Tundra in the definition of full-size trucks in the mandate. Volkswagen and other German automakers complained that the deal didn't give credits for clean diesel, while it did favor EVs, compressed natural gas and ethanol. Resentment with the state of California and its regulatory agency, the California Air Resources Board, also raised hackles in the negotiation process. Now don't get too excited. The feet of Sebastian Vettel or Mark Webber are not responsible for said performance as it appears that the engine revs are being controlled using a laptop computer. In no way does that make the feat any less impressive, though. This time it's BMW, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, although there have been rumors of arch-rival Mercedes-Benz doing the same thing in past years. Regardless, fudging the numbers ain't right, and the Journal paints a pretty compelling case for BMW having done just that. The scenario involves the practice of selling dealer "demos." These are supposed to be vehicles that dealers buy to allow customers to test drive or use for loaners and such and then sell as used cars. But according to the report, that's not what's happening. In July BMW offered a one-day, last-day-of-the-month sale price to dealers to buy demo vehicles at discounts of up to $7,000. Those units were booked as sales by the manufacturer, but dealers aren't really using the vehicles as demos, they're putting them on the lots as new cars. Last month BMW reported sales of 21,297 in the U.S., taking a 1,900-unit lead over Mercedes. Not surprisingly, engines choices will be the same as those for its sister CUV, the Vauxhall Mokka: a 1.4-liter turbo with 113 horsepower, 1.6-liter with 138 hp, and 1.7-liter diesel with 128 hp and 221 pound-feet of torque. If transmission and drivetrain choices are also standardized, the 1.6-liter will only be offered in two-wheel drive with a five-speed manual, the 1.4-liter only in four-wheel drive and with a six-speed manual, and the 1.7-liter diesel gets all the options, available with a six-speed manual or auto and in two- or four-wheel drive. Chevy does say that the Trax 1.4-liter will get the six-speed auto option later in 2013. The interior of the Trax in the photos is distinct from both the Buick Encore and overseas siblings. En las imágenes espía que hoy te traemos puedes observar cómo el nuevo TrailBlazer será un modelo mucho más elaborado estéticamente hablando. Formas más redondeadas y cuidadas le harán parecer más atractivo, al mismo tiempo que ciertos elementos cromados añadirán un toque elegante. El frontal no debería ser muy diferente al visto en el pick up, siendo la zaga la que más dudas nos genera. En general será muy fiel al concepto visto hace unos meses. | Posted: 15 Aug 2012 03:34 PM PDT  Tesla Model S gets track tested, approved by Inside Line Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors, VideosTesla Motors has made lots of performance claims about its 2012 Model S sedan, and while early test drives have definitely left many with positive seat-of-the pants impressions, there's nothing quite like a quality instrumented thrashing to back up a company's assertions.Edmunds Inside Line has gotten its (dirty, stinking) mitts on a Performance-spec example and has been putting the battery-powered fastback through its paces in a proper track environment. It now has an answer to that rubber-burning question: "Does the Model S do on pavement what it does on paper?" It does. And, in the case of the all-important 0-to-60 time, slightly better even - 4.35 seconds as opposed to the stated 4.4 seconds. Sweet! The Model S also lives up to its billing in the quarter-mile metric, with IL tester Mike Monticello matching the 12.6 second claim that Tesla makes on its website. That's an impressive number, especially if you consider that the company's Roadster currently (but not, we suspect, for long) owns the NEDRA Street Production record time with a 12.643 seconds. As well as acceleration, the 5+2 seat Model S was also subjected to skid pad, slalom, and braking abuse where it acquitted itself quite nicely for a 4,770-lb machine. Even more dramatic is one of the potential causes: A declining American middle class. According to an Atlantic report on a new study conduct by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, we're ranked just 25th in the world in per-person car ownership. The actual number stands at 439 cars per 1,000 Americans. Further, the U.S. is an outlier when you compare the number of vehicles per capita to household consumption. While we have one of the highest rates of household spending, car buying is in decline here. It is this disparity that points to the widening income gap in the U.S. as a potential cause of our low rate of car ownership. Indeed, car ownership rates track with the size of a nation's middle class, according to the report. Well-heeled customers would peruse a build book to pick and choose the accoutrements they most liked. About 15 months later, their custom-bodied Cadillac would be delivered for their enjoyment. In Fleetwood's 1934 build book were drawings for a stunningly classy dual-cowl Phaeton and a supremely gorgeous rumble-seat roadster. Both were to be built on Cadillac's V-16 chassis but neither were ever ordered. Even during the Great Depression it's hard to imagine how these two cars could have been passed over. But in 1984, classic car restorer Fran Roxas took a 1930s Cadillac chassis with the 185-horsepower 452-cubic-inch overhead-valve V-16 and created the Phaeton and then the roadster a few years later. In February of this year, the Phaeton sold at auction for $962,500, the roadster for $1,001,000. Both will be on display at Pebble Beach this weekend sitting next to the Ciel Convertible the two cars inspired. "The Cadillac Phaeton 5859 and Roadster 5802 are literally unlike any other vehicle ever built," Clay Dean, Cadillac design director, said in a press release (see below). "The Cadillac design team is still inspired by these two vehicles as we dream and conceive of future Cadillac entries."Hemmings thinks there might have been two reasons why these cars were never built. Enter the eagle-eyed team at Green Car Reports. Fed up with the vague "about 1,000" global sales number for the Karma plug-in hybrid that we've heard for a while now, GCR has been pestering Fisker for a while about how many Karmas have been sold - to no avail. But, when they found one in the wild with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that ended with 001992, they figured it was number 1,992 off the line. Then, during yesterday's announcement about new CEO Tony Posawatz, Henrik Fisker happened to mention that "about 1,900" Karmas have been built thus far. As GCR writes, "While it's possible (though unlikely) that Fisker uses non-contiguous VINs, we're going to take his comment as confirmation of our query." We agree. This doesn't get us any closer to actually knowing how many sales there have been, but it's more than we had before.Has Fisker built 2,000 Karmas already? That's going to be the approach to new vehicles at Lincoln, Automotive News says. Lincoln will focus on high-volume vehicles instead of low-selling flagships and halo vehicles. That means a steady diet of alphabet soup loaded with MKZ's, MKX's and MKS's for dealers and no more fancy flagships or other vehicles that don't meet the volume metric. We'd rule out high-performance sport cars as well, but Lincoln, by definition, rules that out. Those big-ticket vehicles costs hundreds of millions of dollars to develop, and, while they may bolster a brand's reputation, they wouldn't help Lincoln's bottom line. So the next big Lincoln to arrive will be a compact car known as the MKC. Then we'll see redos of the MKX, MKT, MKS and Navigator. Dumping high-level aspirations may reek of desperation, but for Lincoln, these are desperate times. Sales for the brand were down 11 percent in July and two percent for the year, according to Autodata Corp. The brand currently lacks prestige, style or even an unique platform. In July, Lincoln sold 6,975 units, making it a distant last place out of mainstream luxury brands. Our shooters caught this one lapping the Nürburgring, but alas, there isn't much more to see here than in our last set. To recap: The next-gen M3 will debut in concept form at next spring's Geneva show. BMW will initially offer it just as a sedan, but additional variants will be headed our way in subsequent model years. Power is expected to come from a turbocharged inline six with upwards of 400 horses, though BMW may try and get away with nixing the manual tranny in favor of a seven-speed dual-clutch unit. Some 9,000 of the full-size vans may have fuel filler pipes that are prone to excessive corrosion, which can lead to leaking. Fuel leaks, of course, lead to the possibility of fires. The affected vehicles are all from the 2003 and 2004 model year, and include both the Chevy and its GMC Savana twin. But the catch is that the recall only applies to those vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the snow belt. Porsche es una de ellas, que acaba de publicar los datos relativos al mes de julio. Según los dirigentes de la firma, Porsche vendió en el septimo mes del año un 16% más que en el mismo periodo del año anterior, con un total de 12.391 unidades entregadas a nuevos clientes.
