Whether he's talking about the price of li-ion batteries in the coming years or when his own company would deliver the now-available Model S all-electric sedan - to say nothing about leaving the planet with SpaceX - he thinks big. He's usually entirely optimistic, but recently he was downright cautious. Speaking at the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas, he said that: The challenge that Tesla faces over the next few months is scaling production enough to achieve a certain gross margin on our product so we can be cash flow positive. That's extremely important. If we're unable to do that, we'll enter the grave yard with all the other car company startups of the last 90 years. Sounds like Musk is saying that if Tesla can't ramp up production to meet certain internal targets (we'd guess something around the previously mentioned 5,000 units by the end of 2012), then the company could fold. As GigaOM put it, getting to 5,000 in the next four-and-a-half months, is "like the Monster Truck version of ramp ups: totally extreme." Combine this drive with the pressure to not make any mistakes, and you've got the ingredients for another Musk quote. From the Summit, he said, "It'll definitely be a very tough road over the next 6 months. We can't afford to make a lot of mistakes." Six months, four and a half months, a few months, what's the difference? Down in Florida, one group has connected a candidate's support for automated car testing to, well, nothing. And that makes him evil. The Committee to Protect Florida has taken Rep. Jeff Brandes (R-Fla.) to task for proving automated cars did not operate by "witchcraft" instead of working on other things in the St. Petersburg area. The commercial attempts to instill fear in the program and make it sound like these machines are running amok on Florida's streets. (Note the sound effects at the end of the video.) The attack ad features a Toyota Prius running a stop sign and nearly hitting an older woman using a walker as the narrator goes on about how silly these newfangled machines might be. Then the commercial flashes the question, "Will Driverless cars REALLY stop for pedestrians?" Maybe. And if they don't, everyone should blame Jeff Brandes. | Posted: 14 Aug 2012 04:42 PM PDT  Official: Land Rover debuts lighter, sleeker 2013 Range Rover Filed under: SUV, Land Rover, Luxury Not long after a few images leaked onto the web, Land Rover has officially pulled the wraps off of its larger, lighter 2013 Range Rover. We still don't know if we love the new design - some of our staffers stating that it looks a bit Ford Flex-ish to us - but one thing's for sure, that new body sheds a whole mess of pounds compared to the current model. A U.S.-spec 2013 Range Rover is roughly 700 pounds lighter than a similarly equipped outgoing model. How many pounds, you ask? According to the automaker's first batch of press materials, a U.S.-spec 2013 Range Rover is roughly 700 pounds lighter than a similarly equipped outgoing model. That's damn impressive, and it's all thanks to an all-aluminum unibody structure. Additionally, new aluminum chassis structures are found at both the front and rear, as well as a re-engineered four-corner air suspension. Land Rover says that this new suspension allows the Range Rover to deliver flatter, more confident cornering prowess. Of course, this is a Range Rover, so off-road capability is still top notch. Land Rover is introducing its next-generation Terrain Response system which automatically monitors road conditions and selects the appropriate settings based on the road (or dirt, or sand, or rock, or snow) surface. Inside, Land Rover has added 4.7 inches of rear legroom to the 2013 Range Rover - a good thing, since our one gripe with the vehicle has always been its unusually cramped rear quarters. The automaker is also offering a two-place rear seat package for "the ultimate in personalized rear-seat luxury." Up front, there's a redesigned center stack and IP, and the whole thing looks substantially more modern than the current Range Rover. Let's just hope those buggy electronic systems have been reworked, too. Official powertrain information hasn't been released at this time, though Land Rover does confirm that a range of V8 options will be available in the U.S., likely in the same 5.0-liter naturally aspirated and supercharged forms that we're used to. All of the engines will be mated to ZF eight-speed automatic transmissions. We'll be seeing the 2013 Range Rover in person later this year, and North American deliveries are expected to start in December. The city of Los Angeles just had its very first electric vehicle DC fast charger installed - an ECOtality Blink charger public station that can fill up a compatible EV to roughly 80 percent full in 30 minutes. It was unveiled last week in downtown L.A.'s Arts District, across the street from several restaurants. The crowd cheered as the fast charger was introduced and LA City Councilmember Jose Huizar paid tribute to the contribution the fast charger will make to the city. Other notables in attendance were Chris Paine, director of the films Who Killed the Electric Car? and Revenge of the Electric Car, and Paul Scott, co-founder of Plug In America and who is now in charge of Nissan Leaf sales at Nissan of Downtown LA. When the project's developer, Yuval Ben-Zemer, noted that he could have put gas stations where these chargers now stand, the crowd cheered. The fast charger is sitting next to a ten Level 2 chargers in the downtown LA parking lot. These increasingly common chargers take as long as six to eight hours to fully recharge a completely depleted battery, making the fast charger much more appealing for drivers in a rush. Fast chargers are slowly being installed along Highway 5 in Washington and Oregon, but this is the first one in Los Angeles. Why would that be? | Posted: 14 Aug 2012 02:50 PM PDT  Report: Lotus could build production versions of Renault Alpine, Infiniti Emerg-E Filed under: Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Infiniti, Lotus, Renault, Luxury As with one of those blockbuster three-team NBA trades that actually improves the fortunes of every team involved, a report in Autocar indicates that Renault, Infiniti and Lotus are in talks that could benefit both manufacturers and enthusiasts. Renault is considering a production version of the devil-in-blue Alpine A110-50 concept but has said that it "probably needs more than the Renault-Nissan Alliance on its own." Enter Lotus, whose Evora platform could supply the running bits for the mid-engined Alpine revival. That same Evora platform, in range-extended 414E concept form, is the basis for the Infiniti Emerg-E concept. Even though a decision hasn't been made on the Emerg-E's production, it is still being developed and the company has admitted that it "could be built in Britain." For its part, Lotus has said that it's ahead of schedule on the Evora 414E, with its 408 horsepower, 738 pound-feet of torque and 30-mile electric range. De momento no se sabe la denominación final pero se rumorea podría llamarse B80. Lo que sí está listo es su aspecto, mezclando la deportividad con un toque elegante. He de reconocer que en las imágenes espía me ha recordado a una mezcla entre los SUV de Infiniti y el Luxgen7 SUV. El caso es que porte tiene un rato y de llegar con precios competitivos, podría tener cierta relevancia en el segmento. Como todos los modelos de Besturn, tendrá motores de origen Mazda. Se especula con un dos litros para la versión de acceso y un 2,3 litros para el más potente. Su comercialización debería tener lugar a finales de este año o principios del que viene por lo que de momento tendremos que esperara para conocer todos los detalles. From the Cube to the Leaf to the Quest, the company's stylists seem entirely disinterested in bowing to convention unless they're crafting a model for the milquetoast middle of the market. The Juke is no exception to this rule, a dynamite little firecracker of a crossover but one that from certain angles looks like it comes from the factory pre-crashed. And we're not so sure that a new appearance package offered for the 2013 model year helps much. Called the Midnight Edition, the $1,200 option bundles a new 17-inch wheel design with a roof spoiler and mirror caps, all in black. It goes on sale in September, and is available across the model lineup. The E400 Hybrid originally debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. The E400 Hybrid comes packed with a 3.0-liter V6 direct-injection engine good for 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, supplemented by an electric motor (rated at 27 hp and 207 lb-ft). Official fuel economy ratings haven't been released for the E400 Hybrid just yet, but preliminary data (and the big ol' number on the side of the car) suggests 24 miles per gallon in the city, 32 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined. Hybrids not your thing? Never fear - Mercedes-Benz will also sell you the less-expensive E350 Bluetec ($52,200, not including destination) that packs a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 good for 210 hp and 410 lb-ft. The E400 Hybrid originally debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. The E400 Hybrid comes packed with a 3.0-liter V6 direct-injection engine good for 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, supplemented by an electric motor (rated at 27 hp and 207 lb-ft). Official fuel economy ratings haven't been released for the E400 Hybrid just yet, but preliminary data (and the big ol' number on the side of the car) suggests 24 miles per gallon in the city, 32 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined. Hybrids not your thing? Never fear - Mercedes-Benz will also sell you the less-expensive E350 Bluetec ($52,200, not including destination) that packs a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 good for 210 hp and 410 lb-ft. The automaker hasn't detailed the problem behind the replacement, but says that there were around 1,300 vehicles across the country over the past few weeks waiting for replacement parts. A shortage of replacement cylinder heads left many owners out of their vehicle for a week or more with Chrysler paying for rentals in the interim. The company says it is receiving as many as 500 requests per week for the new cylinder heads. In response, Chrysler supplied its service network with around 3,000 new parts to fill the orders. New Pentastar engines are being built with the revised heads. All told, the automaker says the issue impacts around 7,500 of the 1.5 million Pentastar engines produced during the past two years. Owners have complained of ticking, stalling and other issues from Pentastar-equipped models, though Chrysler says the problem is the combination of a number of variables. | Posted: 14 Aug 2012 01:06 PM PDT  Report: In-car black box regulation still on track for September 1 Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety, TechnologyAccording to The Detroit News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is set to move forward with new rules governing the standardization of data recorders on new cars. The rules will take effect on September 1 of this year. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers had petitioned NHTSA to postpone the requirement until at least September 1, 2013, but the government agency rejected the appeal. The group said that manufacturers that are currently using older event data recorders may simply disable the devices to comply with the new rules since the regulations don't actually force new cars to have the black boxes. General Motors, for example, has said it will disable some event data recorder functionality on both Chevrolet Malibu and GMC Savana models. The rules aim to standardize exactly what information EDR modules collect and the format with which the devices store the data. Manufacturers will be required to record 15 vehicle parameters. Right now, a total of 90 percent of new vehicles for sale in the U.S. have EDRs. Eventually, NHTSA expects to mandate the technology on all new vehicles. Such a mandate was originally expected to fall at some point this year, but has been repeatedly delayed by the government agency. Si esta mañana Guille nos adelantaba dos instantáneas del nuevo Range Rover, ahora completamos la galería con tres nuevas tomas, incluyendo una del interior. Bastante continuista en su aspecto, el nuevo Range Rover lucirá tan duro como siempre pero sin olvidar su carácter de representación y altas dosis de lujo. Esto último queda plasmado sobre todo en el habitáculo, muy parecido al de los vendidos hasta ahora, pero con mayor tecnología aplicada y materiales más cuidados. El último en aparecer es el que protagonizan MacGyver y el nuevo Citan. La nueva serie de episodios comenzará a emitirse en la red a partir del 18 de septiembre y podremos ver al popular personaje, habitualmente al servicio de la "Fundación Phoenix", sacarle el máximo provecho al nuevo Citan de Mercedes, un modelo derivado del Renault Kangoo y iniciará su comercialización en unas semanas.
