Nieuwe crashtest toont grote gebreken autofabrikanten
Official: IIHS launching first new frontal crash test since 1995 [w/video]
Filed under: Safety, Technology The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has unveiled a new crash testing methodology in dramatic fashion - by dinging some of the most popular entry luxury sedans for failing to adequately protect the driver during certain types of crashes. The 2012 Acura TSX, 2012 BMW 3-Series, 2012 Lincoln MKZ and 2012 Volkswagen CC were all deemed "marginal," while the 2012 Audi A4, 2012 Lexus ES, 2012 Lexus IS, and 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class were called "poor" by the testing group. The new test is designed to simulate the effects of hitting a tree or pole at 40 miles per hour, but rather than striking the object dead-on, the IIHS delivers a more glancing blow that only impacts a quarter of the car's front end. These types of collisions are particularly dangerous, as the impact will often miss the energy-absorbing structures built into the car's frame. "These are severe crashes, and our new test reflects that," said IIHS President Adrian Lund in a statement. "Most automakers design their vehicles to ace our moderate overlap frontal test and NHTSA's full-width frontal test, but the problem of small overlap crashes hasn't been addressed. We hope our new rating program will change that." Whether that will happen remains to be seen, but the new testing regimen will undoubtedly annoy luxury carmakers like Audi, BMW and Mercedes whose vehicles did not fare so well. Volvo, whose S60 was given a "good" rating, will likely be pleased to retain its reputation for safety. The only other of the vehicles IIHS tested to perform as well was the Acura TL, while the Infiniti G sedan was deemed "acceptable."Scroll down to read the full press release and watch an accompanying video.Continue reading IIHS launching first new frontal crash test since 1995 [w/video]IIHS launching first new frontal crash test since 1995 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 00:01:00 EST. Car number three and its 327-cubic-inch engine topped with the 4.0-liter blower ran what looks like an 8.88-second quarter-mile at the strip, out of the box. That puts it at the pointy end of the three-way competition between it, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and the Mopar Challenger Drag Pak. Ford has said the Cobra Jet will run in under 10 seconds, while the Challenger Drag Pak did a 9.43 out of the box last year. Fumio Nutahara wins Pikes Peak electric division for Toyota Motorsport, sets record
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Mitsubishi, Racing Chalk up an impressive win and another record for the all-electric Toyota Motorsport GmbH EV P001. With Fumio Nutahara behind the wheel, the team raced to the clouds at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in an impressive 10 minutes, 15.380 seconds. That was fast enough to place 6th overall and clinch the top spot in the electric class. Congratulations! Despite a crash on the first day of practice, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution with driver Hiroshi Masuoka was looking sharp as it crossed the line just 15 seconds behind the electric leader to clinch 2nd EV place with a 10:30.850 time. Perhaps the most surprising/amazing result of the day was from the HCE Lightning XP12 entry. Driver Elias Anderson took it upon himself to combine a modified F600 chassis from NovaKar with a 240 horsepower electric drivetrain - supplied in part, at least, from Lightning Motorcycles - in the space of a few short months and challenge the big factory teams. His 3rd place 11:00.857 finish gave him the 13th fastest overall spot and plenty of reasons to be very proud of himself. Michael Bream drove the electrified EV West BMW M3 to a 4th place class finish, just ahead of last year's winner and previous record holder, Ikuo Hanawa in the Yokahama EV Sports Concept HER-02. Beccy Gordon rounded out the battery-powered category in her stripped down Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Sadly, Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima, favorite to win and fastest in practice, experienced a small fire after the motor in his car apparently failed, ending his effort about a kilometer from the start line. (Hey, it could have been much worse.)Scroll down for the official press release from the race-winning team along with videos of practice runs from both the Tajima and EV West entries.Continue reading Fumio Nutahara wins Pikes Peak electric division for Toyota Motorsport, sets recordFumio Nutahara wins Pikes Peak electric division for Toyota Motorsport, sets record originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 19:56:00 EST. Auctions: New Zealand dealership honors $1 Buy-it-Now price
Filed under: Car Buying, Government/Legal, BMW, Australia, Luxury You've probably heard of more than a few eBay or Craigslist specials that sound too good to be true; "Buy it for just $1- today only!" More often than not, its a ruse, luring you in for a far less inciting, yet more realistic transaction. If you are Stadium Cars, you wish it were the latter, but a mistake on its part led to a BMW being sold for just $1. An employee at Stadium Cars in New Zealand listed a 1994 320i online for auction. The reserve, and thus the "Buy it Now" price? Just $1. At that price, it was scooped up in seconds. Stadium Cars manager Mike Nokes said that while a car is listed with a $1 reserve every week, the "Buy it Now" option was accidentally activated. Thus, a user by the name of "bignz" was able to purchase the 1994 BMW 320i that otherwise would likely have sold in the $3,000 range. Sure, it's not nearly a brand-new car, but who'd turn down that deal? Unsurprisingly, it was the cheapest sale of a car in the history of the dealership. At the point, one may surmise that the dealer would embark on legal action to get out of the sale, but according to Nokes, "We are firm believers in the auction process and for it to be fair to buyers and sellers alike." In this case, it seems that the buyer made out with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.New Zealand dealership honors $1 Buy-it-Now price originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 19:31:00 EST. Official: Vintech unveiling P550 Tribute at Pebble Beach
Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Coupe, Performance, Porsche So you want to own a painfully gorgeous Porsche 550, but you don't have $3.685 million? You don't say! If your heart is still set on a stunning sports car with classic lines, then Vintech may have a solution for you. The French company has created the P550 Tribute, and as the name suggests, the car is meant to evoke the famed Porsche 550. Though possessing classic lines, the P550 boasts a full carbon fiber body, under which is a modern chassis and a 3.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine. The engine is expected to produce between 260 and 270 horsepower, sent through a five-speed manual transmission. With a curb weight of only 1,212 pounds, this vehicular homage should haul some serious tail. The P550 Tribute will make its debut Friday, August 17 at "The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering." It is one of the many prestigious events taking place during the Pebble Beach Concours d'Delegance weekend. Neither pricing nor production numbers have been announced, but we can surmise that the former will be a large number, and the latter will be a small one. In the meantime, feast your eyes on the gallery below of schematics, the build, and the finished product.Vintech unveiling P550 Tribute at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 19:00:00 EST. Study: Over 10% of new car buyers skip the test drive
Filed under: Car Buying How disinterested are consumers in their cars? According to a new study reported in The Detroit Free Press, more than 10 percent of new car buyers can't be bothered to take a test drive. The study, conducted by Maritz Research, surveyed over 80,000 people who had bought 2012 model year vehicles, and the final tally of those who didn't take a test drive was 11.4 percent, according to the report. The implication is that with some 80 percent of consumers doing their car research on the Internet, combined with a universal dislike of car sales practices, people are increasingly willing to buy a car almost sight unseen. Dealers, oddly enough, are not happy about this trend, according to the report. The test drive is part of the dealer's arsenal of tactics to get people excited enough to part with their hard earned cash. As one former dealership representative told the Freep, "The feel of the wheel will seal the deal." But the test drive can also be a crucial determiner for consumers, especially when car shoppers do an adequate job of comparing different vehicles by undertaking thorough test drives. No matter how good a model might look on paper or how glowingly some "professional" car reviewer might describe it, there's no replacement for actually getting it out on the road and experiencing it yourself.Over 10% of new car buyers skip the test drive originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 18:29:00 EST. Domino's wants you to design the ultimate pizza delivery vehicle [w/video]
Filed under: Videos, Design/Style When you want the crowd to help you design something automotive related, Local Motors seems to have become the go-to. The Phoenix-based company that birthed the Rally Fighter has since collaborated with DARPA, Edison2 and Peterbilt among others, and now it can add Domino's Pizza to the list. The pizza pie maker wants to create, with your input, the Ultimate Delivery Vehicle that will ease the 10 million miles per week its drivers do. A five-part design competition will begin today and end on February 19, 2013, with each phase covering a different aspect of the vehicle: design, packaging, interior, surfacing and rendering. After that will come the prototype... and eventually, better pizza. Or a better pizza experience, at least. For insight into the needs of a pizza deliverer, the contest will be joined by a national television campaign featuring the Domino's CEO doing ride-alongs with "delivery experts" and soliciting feedback. The particulars are now available here, and there's a video and press releases from Domino's and Local Motors just below.Continue reading Domino's wants you to design the ultimate pizza delivery vehicle [w/video]Domino's wants you to design the ultimate pizza delivery vehicle [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 17:59:00 EST. Google adding Lexus RX450h to driverless fleet, but what's in it for them?
Filed under: Hybrid, Transportation Alternatives, Lexus As driverless cars make their way to Nevada and Florida, and possibly California, in state-sanctioned test programs, Google continues to play a big part in collecting the data. It's self-diving Toyota Prius vehicles have clocked in more than 300,000 miles of testing. Google has added another car to its test program - the 2012 Lexus RX450h luxury crossover SUV. Google plans on testing driverless cars in snow-covered roadways, temporary construction signals and other tricky situations that might come up for drivers, the company said. The RX450h has an optional electric all-wheel drive, which makes it a good choice for testing such road conditions. Google dominates the search engine business, and has a few profitable side businesses like the Android phone software and cloud computing services. The question is: What is Google getting out of investing in driverless cars? And what about all the other non-search services it offers? You can use Google on your phone and find lots of useful content - driving directions with real-time traffic data, a directory of electric vehicle charging stations closest to you and an arial view of your neighborhood. Perhaps it's necessary to stay on the edge of leading technologies - too keep your users loyal and your employees on board. Rolf Schreiber, technical program manager of electric transportation initiatives at Google, spoke on a panel last month at Plug-in 2012 in San Antonio, TX. He said that, at that time, Google had installed 387 Level 1 and 2 electric vehicle chargers on campus for Google employees, and has a few fast chargers in the business plan. The main reason for this investment? In order to get talented, hard-working technology specialists to come and work for you in a competitive marketplace like Silicon Valley, charging stations are an attractive perk to offer them. Perhaps Google sees an important role to play in wireless communications, telematics and the future of transportation? Driverless cars might represent where automobiles are going, and it would be good for business to provide technologies connected to dashboards and smartphones. It also has to do with the company's sense of corporate responsibility. As a recent posting on the Google blog said, "Technology is at its best when it makes people's lives better, and that's precisely what we're going for with our self-driving car project. We're using advanced computer science to try and make driving safer and more enjoyable."Google adding Lexus RX450h to driverless fleet, but what's in it for them? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 17:49:00 EST. Report: Mercedes-Benz M-Class being recalled due to possible accelerator entrapment
Filed under: SUV, Recalls, Safety, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury Floor mats impeding gas pedals are continuing to cause problems for automakers. This time its Mercedes-Benz. According to The Detroit News, the German automaker is recalling all-season accessory floor mats on 2012 and 2013 M-Class models for fear that the mat could entrap the go-pedal. Mercedes-Benz filed this recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, possibly effecting 8,675 in the United States. According to a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson, the floor mats "may not conform to the contours of the floor." This could result in the gas pedal being pressed, and not coming back up, resulting in the car continuing to accelerate. Mercedes has recommended that all M-Class owners remove the floor mats for the time being. The luxury automaker will notify owners of effected vehicles and have dealers replace the mats free of charge. Mercedes-Benz vehicles currently incorporated brake-override systems that nix the gas pedal inputs when both the accelerator and brake are applied simultaneously.Mercedes-Benz M-Class being recalled due to possible accelerator entrapment originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 17:29:00 EST.
Spy Shots: Is Lincoln getting its own version of the Ford Escape?
Filed under: Spy Photos, Crossover, Ford, LincolnLincoln may be working on a new small crossover built on the same platform as the Ford Escape. Our spy photographers recently spotted this early development vehicle out on public streets around Detroit. Slightly larger than its non-luxury sire, the model may bow with a new interpretation of the Ecoboost four-cylinder. It doesn't take a keen eye to spot the larger intercooler stuck low in the hacked front fascia of the Escape. Word has it the vehicle could make use of a new 2.7-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder engine, though power figures are still absent at the moment. What will Lincoln call its newest addition? Chances are the company will stick with the confusing MK-based naming structure it currently uses, and early reports hint the CUV may fly under the MKD banner. Why D? Your guess is as good as ours. The luxury CUV segment is a volume powerhouse at the moment, and Lincoln would be wise to offer buyers a product in that segment. Whether the MKD can manage to be more than a gussied-up Ford remains to be seen, however. Is Lincoln getting its own version of the Ford Escape? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 16:57:00 EST. Report: Nissan working on high-performance Nismo, RS models
Filed under: Performance, Crossover, Nissan, Design/StyleAuto Express has confirmed that Nissan is planning a slew of performance models under the Nismo wing, including a number of high-performance RS variants. Nissan executive VP of product planning Andy Palmer told the UK magazine that the Nismo brand should be considered "an affordable alternative to Mercedes' AMG division," and continued, "Nismo versions will get a power hike of 15 percent, but the focus will be on distinctive styling." The Nismo Juke will be the first of these models to arrive early next year. It will boast a unique body kit, as well as 18-inch wheels and bright red side view mirrors. Underhood, the 1.6-liter mill will be massaged to produce 215 horsepower - an increase of 28 hp. According to Palmer, "We'll also tune the suspension and steering, so customers can get more out of the power they have." Next to get the Nismo treatment is the all-electric Nissan Leaf. Originally shown at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, it will feature blue accents instead of the red found on other Nismo models. Power will jump to 125 from the standard 110 horsepower. 2013 will also see the introduction of a Nismo variant of the GT-R, as well as the latest version of the Nismo Z, which is already sold here in the U.S. If you have the insatiable need for speed, Nissan will be unleashing an RS range of models, boasting track-focused performance. Palmer indicated that there would be a Juke RS making 270 horsepower. It was also noted that there would be RS versions of the GT-R and 370Z. We can't wait to see this onslaught of performance that Nissan has in store for the next year or two. Severe drought hurts corn production, turns ethanol into election-year issue. Again
Filed under: Ethanol, Legislation and Policy As it was four years ago during another election year, corn ethanol is once again the focal point for heated exchange in the U.S. The federal government is feeling the vise tighten in the corn ethanol debate, as the issues flip and flop between gasoline prices going up and global food prices increasing. The worst drought in more than 50 years is also playing a role. Last Wednesday, the Energy Information Administration said exports of corn-based ethanol were going to be hurt by the drop in corn production due to drought conditions. It also said that prices for America's gasoline blended with the domestic fuel shouldn't rise significantly. The story changed a bit two days later, when the Department of Agriculture stated that the terrible drought caused more damage than expected to corn and soybean crops. Food prices jumped six percent last month and it looks like they'll continue rising, experts say, bringing back the food-versus-fuel debate. International pressure is being applied. United Nations food official Jose Graziano da Silva is calling for an "immediate, temporary suspension" of the mandate to stave off another world food crisis. Some are saying that the situation isn't all that bad. Geoff Cooper, writing for the Renewable Fuels Association, says: While this year's harvest [in the U.S.] will be considerably smaller than initially expected, it is remarkable that farmers are still expected to produce the eighth-largest corn crop on record despite experiencing the worst drought in 50 years and the hottest month of July in recorded history. ... World corn production was cut 6% based on the U.S. drought, but total foreign corn production was unchanged from July. Increased production in Argentina, Brazil, and China offset yield reductions in the EU and former Soviet Union. This year's global corn crop will still be the second-largest on record, according to USDA. The White House is looking at the numbers now and will work with the Environmental Protection Agency and the USDA on carefully implementing the Renewable Fuel Standard. U.S. fuel companies are supposed to convert about 40 percent of the corn crop into biofuel to meet the federal standards, and it might receive a waiver from the White House. However, with strong farm belt support and an election looming, many political analysts say the odds of a waiver are low. Farmers and ethanol producers may have lost the 30-year-old corn ethanol subsidy at the end of last year, but they still have influence in Washington.Severe drought hurts corn production, turns ethanol into election-year issue. The Autoblog Podcast, now brought to you by Tire Rack
Filed under: Podcasts Regular listeners of the Autoblog Podcast already know that Tire Rack (Facebook/Twitter) is now sponsoring our long-running (300 here we come!) weekly show, and we wanted to share the news with the rest of our readership. Tire Rack is a family-owned business headquartered right in South Bend, Indiana, where the company not only serves its customers as a great resource for tires, wheels, suspension and brake parts and support, but also tests tires from every major manufacturer at its 11.7-acre test facility. Members of the Autoblog team have long been customers of Tire Rack for our own vehicles, which is why Autoblog and AOL Autos turned to the company for winter tires to help our long-term Mini Countryman go in the snow, and we'll continue to tap them as a resource for our ongoing fleet of extended-stay vehicles. Indeed, Tire Rack has long been a supporter of automotive enthusiasts, and we're genuinely excited to have their support for the Autoblog Podcast. And now, on to the show. This week we welcome the hosts of Top Gear USA - Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood and Adam Ferrara - to talk about their third season hosting the U.S. version of the world's most popular car show. Want to listen to it live? Return to the site at 10 PM EST for instructions. The Autoblog Podcast, now brought to you by Tire Rack originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 15:45:00 EST. Ferdinand Piech rijdt shotgun in Audi R8 V10 Plus

Official: Fisker Statement: Karma batteries not to blame for fire
Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Performance, Safety, Fisker, Electric, Luxury As we suspected yesterday, the first official word from Fisker about the Karma that caught fire in Woodside, CA this weekend is that the lithium ion batteries are apparently not to blame. Fisker has released a statement, which you can find below, which says that independent investigators from Pacific Rim Investigative Group are looking into the cause of the blaze: Evidence revealed thus far supports the fact that the ignition source was not the Lithium-ion battery pack, new technology components or unique exhaust routing. The area of origin for the fire was determined to be outside the engine compartment. There was no damage to the passenger compartment and there were no injuries. More information will be released when Fisker and the investigators have something to report. To see a video of the fire and read our original report, click here. According to the National Fire Protection Association (PDF), between 2005 and 2009, there have been 1,150 spontaneous vehicle fires, half of those in passenger vehicles. So, just under 600 vehicles burn for no known reason in an average year, out of a national fleet of around 250 million vehicles. Two Karma fires in four months is thus noteworthy, especially given the newness of the technology and general worries about the safety of li-ion batteries. According to Fisker, though, it's not something to panic about. While we await further details of this investigation, scroll down to read Fisker's official statement.Continue reading Fisker Statement: Karma batteries not to blame for fireFisker Statement: Karma batteries not to blame for fire originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 15:28:00 EST. Video: Jaguar F-Type gets worked out at speed
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Videos, Paris Motor Show, JaguarJaguar wants us all to know that it is hard at work on the new F-Type. Engineers have been busily wringing the convertible out over a test course ahead of its debut at this year's Paris Motor Show. We know that the new convertible will be offered with a pair of supercharged power plants, in both 3.0-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 variants. The six-cylinder should be good for up to 375 horsepower, though the video below promises appropriate power to weight and torque to weight ratios. The company seems focused on serving up a rigid chassis stitched from lightweight components, too. Those are all wins in our book. An eight-speed automatic transmission will likely handle shifting duties, and Jaguar has hinted that a hardtop version of the sports car will make its way to production as well. Check out the new teaser clip below.Continue reading Jaguar F-Type gets worked out at speedJaguar F-Type gets worked out at speed originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 14:59:00 EST.
