| Posted: 12 Aug 2012 04:50 PM PDT  Report: Fisker Flambé: Second Karma spontaneously combusts [w/video] By all accounts, the Fisker Karma is one hot car. For a couple of owners though, perhaps it's too hot. Similar to a situation in May, when a Karma caught fire for no apparent reason in a Texas garage, another burst into flames in a Woodside, CA parking lot. Rudy Burger was returning to his car after grocery shopping when he caught in the act of self-immolation. According to Jalopnik, he immediately called Fisker which, in turn, advised him to call 911. Firefighters arrived quickly and the flames were subdued before much more than just the front driver's side was consumed. Considering that the A123 Systems' battery runs down the center of the car under the passenger compartment, it is possible that the pack was not responsible for the blaze. Wired got a statement from Fisker, which furthers this line of thought. It reads, in part: Fisker understands damage was limited to the driver's side front corner of the car, away from the lithium ion battery and electric motors. The car was not being charged at the time. In an electric vehicle, immediate suspicion is focused on the battery and high voltage components. The location of the damage to the vehicle in this incident appears to rule out that suspicion. Fisker has not had any battery or high voltage fire incidents with any of its vehicles. Fisker has hired "an independent fire expert to assist the investigation" and says that once the probe is complete and the cause pinpointed, it will issue a statement on the matter. Now Australian tuner Walkinshaw Performance is adding insult to injury with this hotted-up Holden version of the Cruze. Turning up the wick on the Cruze's 1.4-liter turbo engine, Walkinshaw has managed to extract some 241 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque from the little Ecotec. In standard U.S. trim, it makes only 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, so the modifications add a whopping 75 percent more power and 55 percent more torque. While Walkinshaw doesn't mention specifics, its Cruze upgrade package will also include upgraded suspension and brakes. No price was announced. The full press release is posted below. El Dacia Duster pasa por las manos de parte del equipo de Renault Technologie Roumanie (RTR) para convertirse en toda una limusina, imaginamos eso esí, de coste contenido. Visto por primera vez a finales del año pasado, pensábamos que se quedaría en las instalaciones de Renault Rumania como simple ejercicio de diseño pero finalmente los responsables del modelo le están sacando provecho y ya se puede ver circulando por las carreteras del país pintado en un tono más llamativo. Con el fin de la austeridad en la Alemania de la posguerra, emergió una nueva clase, la clase media. Herbert Quandt vio en ella el futuro y propuso, él también, una nueva clase de BMW, el 1500. El coche fue presentado en el salón de Fráncfort de 1961. Y resultó ser todo un hito de la historia de la automoción. Además de acercarse al millón de visitantes (960.000, para ser exactos), el salón destacó por la presentación al público del cinturón de seguridad. También fue el año en el que BMW presentó el 1500, o Neue Klasse, como se le conoció en Alemania. Y ahí empezó su camino hacia el éxito, dejando atrás unos años oscuros de incertidumbres. En los años 50, las cosas no iban bien para BMW, sus ventas estaban en caída libre (¡qué diferencia con la actualdiad!). Los Barockengel, o ángeles barrocos como el público alemán apodó a los BMW 501 y 502, no podían con el Mercedes 220. Todo eran trabas en el camino de BMW, por ejemplo, las primeras 2.045 unidades fueron fabricadas por Bauer porque BMW aún no disponía del utillaje para el embutido de los paneles de carrocería. Se dice que el pequeño Isetta mantenía a flote la marca, pues BMW perdía dinero con cada 501 vendido. La situación empezó a mejorar a finales de los años 50 con la llegada del 700, pero para muchos era demasiado tarde. Con la llegada de la década de los 60, los años de austeridad de la posguerra quedaron atrás, las familias alemanas veían su poder adquisitivo subir un 10% de media cada año. BMW necesitaba un modelo que la clase media, la nueva clase, adoptara con entusiasmo. This is different. The minds at Overfinch have turned their attention to the Land Rover stable and have cooked up a couple of, um, unique versions of both the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. We can certainly get behind the notion of the GTS-X, a slammed Sport with 575 horsepower at the driver's beck and call. While the front fascia is a little garish, the bright orange paint and colossal split-spoke rollers are just demented enough to tickle our fancy. Of course, for $230,100, it better. Then there's the purple people eater Evoque. Overfinch saddled the interior with white leather, bolted on a set of 22-inch wheels and dipped the whole concoction in some very purple paint. We can't say that's a direction we would have gone, but we can also safely assume we aren't Overfinch's target demographic, either. Both creations will be at the Salon Prive London starting September 5. El Luxgen5 Sedán es el primer turismo convencional de la marca y pretende llegar a esas familias que quieren contar con los últimos avances pero no pueden permitirse un Lexus o un BMW. Es posible que por diseño no sea el más agraciado del segmento, pero dentro del clasicismo general de sus formas esconde un toque deportivo que no le queda nada mal. Austin Gayer and Danny Newman's Roximity app will appeal to you, then. The duo explains it as "a location-based alert system that allows merchants to sign up for geo-aware location deals." In other words, when you're near a place offering a deal, you get an alert on your iPhone, and since Roximity is integrating with Ford Sync, that functionality extends to Ford cars and trucks as well. Roximity was the winning app developed during the Ford Sync App Developer Challenge at the 2011 TechCrunch Distrupt Hackathon in San Francisco. What makes it different from other deal sites, like Groupon, is that you can better tailor the deals to your interest. This way you won't get deals for vegan dining if all you want is updates on bacon cheeseburgers. Para todos los compañeros de profesión que conozco a los que les gusta conducir, el Clio RS es "el mejor de su categoría". Y eso a pesar de que lleva con nosotros desde 2006 nada menos, y su sustituto está a la vuelta de la esquina. Lo bueno del Clio es que es un fiel representante de lo que tiene que ser un GTI: pequeño, ligero, potente, ágil, versátil y para nada caro. Y si te miras uno de segunda mano puedes encontrar algo realmente interesante. Hoy te proponemos ponerle el ojo encima a una unidad de 2006-2008, que te puede salir por unos 10.000€, y eso sin tener que recurrir a una que tenga muchos kilómetros. Como en España además fue uno de los modelos más exitosos a nivel comercial dentro de su división, puedes encontrar una buena cantidad de unidades a la venta, para que puedas elegir color y hasta provincia. | Posted: 12 Aug 2012 07:18 AM PDT  Report: DeltaWing wants to be the 2014 Indy Lights chassis Filed under: Motorsports, Specialty, Racing In May the Indy Lights series, the top feeder for IndyCar, put out an RFP from manufacturers interested in constructing a new chassis for 2014 to replace the 10-year-old Dallara currently in use. According to reports, hands were raised by "five or six" companies that included Dallara, Mygale, Swift and Mugen. Also among the submisions, according to Racer Magazine, is the group behind the DeltaWing - sans Nissan, which was a collaboration specifically for Le Mans - composed of the designers, Dan Gurney's All American Racers, and Elan Motorsports Technologies (the home of Panoz). Remember, the DeltaWing was originally created as an IndyCar chassis proposal. The DeltaWing would certainly fulfill part of the first requirement of the new Indy Lights chassis, that it have a "forward-thinking, sophisticated and exciting formula." The necessity for paddle shifting, upgraded data systems and alternative fuel considerations sounds easy enough but we don't know what alterations the car might need to satisfy some of the other specs, such as adaptability to the variety of circuits "with a minimum of facility-specific parts," the ability to fit a "broad spectrum of drivers and seating positions," and "improved aerodynamic performance that must also allow for enhanced sponsor placement opportunities on the car." Overall, Indy Lights authroities would like to acquire a manufacturer-badged engine and see top speeds bumped up a bit as well. En paralelo sabíamos que para celebrar los 25 años de la victoria de Walter Rorhl en la mítica prueba norteamericana, el piloto alemán iba a volver a subirse a su S1 este 12 de agosto para conmemorar la efeméride. Pero los incendios que obligaron a retrasar la prueba hicieron que el bueno de Rorhl no pudiera abrir un hueco en su agenda para subir con el S1, así que parece que la solución alternativa ha sido mezclar el RS5 y el Ducati en un vídeo prmocional que tienes tras el salto, donde también te hemos colocado la mítica subida del piloto alemán. Al menos el nuevo vídeo, a pesar de carecer de Rorhl, cuenta con una descripción del nuevo trazado, completamente asfaltado, de la prueba. Sea como sea, lo que nos gustaría sería ver a Rorhl corriendo de nuevo Pikes Peak en la lucha por la victoria con Audi y un RS5 o un Quattro moderno (proyecto de cuyo estado de desarrollo no sabemos nada) modificados. Sabiendo que la casa de Ingolstadt dejará Le Mans tras la carrera de 2013, 2014 podría ser un buen momento para plantearse este reto puntual antes de meterse en otra competición internacional, que parece que acabará siendo la F1. Goodyear researchers have found that using soybean oil in the manufacturing process can extend the tread life of tires and significantly reduce the amount of petroleum required, "up to seven million gallons each year" for the company as a whole. Adding soy to rubber compounds in tire production, the company says, has proven to improve the mixing process, and creates a better rubber compound. The soy helps the rubber blend easier with the silica, a basic component of ordinary beach sand and an integral tire ingredient. Goodyear is the the best-selling tire-manufacturer in North America. Adding soy, Goodyear says, could enhance its already strong reputation for quality. Goodyear has consistently been a top pick in ConsumerReports' tire ratings. Therefore, a 10-percent increase to tread life could play well with consumers looking to get more miles for their tire bucks. "Consumers benefit through improved tread life, Goodyear gains with increased efficiency and energy savings and we all win whenever there is a positive impact on the environment." said Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyear's chief technical officer, in a statement. If testing continues to produce the results Goodyear has gotten thus far, the tires could be on sale by 2015.
