| Posted: 11 Aug 2012 12:28 AM PDT  Descanse en paz: Nos deja Phillippe Bugalski Filed under: CompeticiónBugalski camino de su primera victoria en el WRC No será difícil que recuerdes a Phillipe Bugalski. Junto a Chus Puras, el piloto francés fue uno de los encargados de desarrollar los Xsara Kit Car y posteriormente los Xsara T4 con los que Citroën irrumpiría en el WRC. Fue, sin duda, uno de los mejores pilotos sobre asfalto que recordamos, especialista de la superficie, que logró dos victorias en el mundial de 1999 (Cataluña y Tour de Corse) con un dos ruedas motrices ante la flor y nata de los 4x4. Bugalski, siempre muy bien relacionado con Citroën, no lograría quedarse con un asiento oficial en el equipo cuando este entró ya de manera más seria con el Xsara T4, y se acabaría retirando de la competición en 2003. Desgraciadamente nueve años después, y a sus 49 años, Bugalski fallecía ayer tras caerse de un árbol que estaba podando en el jardín de su casa. Descanse en paz. | Posted: 10 Aug 2012 05:26 PM PDT  Motorsports: 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 3 saves the best for last Filed under: Motorsports For the first two practice days of this year's Pikes Peak Hill Climb, we spent our time on the bottom third of the mountain, first checking out the new contenders of the Electric Division, including Monster Tajima's E-Runner, and for the second day catching up with the old and new faces of the Unlimited and Time Attack classes. For the third and final practice day we headed up the mountain to the middle section of the course that encompasses many of its switchbacks. Our decision was two-fold, first to continue following the diverse selection of Unlimited and Time Attack cars, and second to take in what we consider the most beautiful section of the mountain. This portion of the road is undoubtedly the most dangerous with few guardrails and sheer drop-offs, but it's also the most visually stunning. Standing well above the tree line and just below Devil's Playground, named for the lightning bolts that jump from rock to rock during thunderstorms, one can see a large portion of the course hundreds of feet below. It's a scene that's unrivaled in any form of motorsport, enhanced further by fantastic Colorado sunrises that usher in each day's practice session. The competitors didn't disappoint those in attendance, blasting up each switchback at a furious pace, although it was evident that some cars were showing signs of struggling in the thin air of the higher elevations. Paul Dallenbach and Frenchman Jean-Philippe Dayraut continued their battle for fastest time in the Unlimited class, although it looks like the Frenchman currently has a slight edge on the Colorado native. While Dallenbach's home-built twin-turbo race car surely has more power, Dayraut's Dacia Duster looks to have the edge in handling.Rhys Millen looked dominate in the Time Attack division in his 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and while results have yet to be posted from today's session we're confident he's at the top of the charts. Assuming Millen doesn't suffer any of the problems that plagued him over the last few years, he's a sure bet to set a new record in the class come race day. In order to woo them, automakers have geared their advertising toward all things green, even if their products can't quite match the hype. Environmentalists have labeled this phenomenon of making a product appear to be more environmentally benign than it actually is "greenwashing." They may not do much to actually lessen pollution, but they make people feel greener. "The ad industry has stepped up to make you feel better about the things that are not green by making them feel green," Graeme Newell, president of 602 Communications, a marketing research firm, told The Huffington Post. Jaguar, for instance, calls the secret overflow space it uses for its Heritage Center "Sleepy Hollow." The $130 million Porsche Museum has 505 cars in its collection, but they aren't all on display at all times. That is why it has an exclusive location "somewhere in the surroundings and suburbs of Stuttgart" used for storage, as a staging area for cars headed to events, and as a vault for projects for other companies like Lada, Mercedes-Benz, Seat, and a concept for a family car for China. The company gives us a look inside with the first two in the series of videos called Porsche Secrets. The first video is an overview of how the space is used, the second jumps into some of the special cars found therein, such as the 984 "Boxster Junior" concept from 1984 (in the foreground of the above photo), a 1976 924 concept meant to challenge the Mercedes-Benz C111 for endurance records, and a 906 Ollon Villars hillclimb racer. As you may recall, I got to tag along and do my best to get the supercharged Grand Touring entry as lost as possible. While we were there, one very dedicated film crew followed us from stage to stage, thereby documenting our various triumphs and defeats for a feature-length film. Packed with lots of in-stage footage, interviews with crew as well as fans of both Flyin' Miata and the Targa Newfoundland, the show finds itself on footing with the likes of Truth in 24 and From Dust to Glory. I spend a bit of time on screen trying to explain what it's like to drown under a league of time-speed-distance calculations, but don't let that be a deterrent. The movie does a stellar job of conveying exactly what it's like to compete in one of the most unique motorsports endeavors on the planet. After a $5.2 billion cash infusion, Nissan will grow by 9,000 jobs, expand capacity by 425,000 vehicles and 200,000 lithium-ion batteries. With its existing NA plants, Nissan already produces all its core models here. But by 2015, the company plans to build at its North American plants 85% of all Nissan and Infiniti models sold in the U.S. Nissan's Smyrna, Tenn. plant will soon add the Leaf and Rogue to its lineup and the Canton, Miss. plant will add the Sentra to its truck production. To pull off that expanded lineup, Canton will get 1,000 new jobs boosting its payroll to 4,500 workers. Nissan also has an engine plant in Decherd, Tenn., which will add 90 jobs this year and up to 400 new jobs eventually, to help build electric motors for the Leaf as well as Daimler. In Mexico, Nissan plans to spend $2 billion to add a third plant with 3,000 workers making 175,000 subcompacts by late next year. BMW, Mercedes and Porsche already have the technology on non-hybrid vehicles and Jaguar and Kia will introduce it soon. Ford, too, is adding start-stop to non-hybrid models for a modest fee. In the 2013 Fusion (pictured), it costs just $295. But how many vehicles soon get all quiet at red lights? Around 8 million in North American by 2017, says a study by Lux Research, as automakers get ready to meet higher CAFE standards. AAA is getting out in front of the questions by issuing answers to questions it thinks drivers will have about why their car turns "off" so often. Here's some of what the AAA has to say. Start-stop can increase fuel economy by up to 12 percent. The engine is shut off under different circumstances in manuals and automatics (transmission in neutral, clutch released in manuals; vehicle stopped for several seconds, brake pedal applied for autos). In both cases, once the driver makes moves to go again, the engine fires up. Alongside worries about HVAC performance and the potential higher cost to replace the bigger batteries start-stop required (which gas savings should more than cover) the biggest downside AAA can come up with is driver expectations: "The engine stop-start transitions must be smooth and seamless, and drivers new to the technology will need to learn that engine shutdown at idle is a normal thing and not a sign of a problem." One of the bigger questions we have is why the U.S. is so far behind the curve on this issue. Over 40 percent of new vehicles sold in Europe and Japan have start-stop. The first four COPO Camaros have filed out of the COPO Assembly Facility. COPO numbers 3, 5, 7 and 9 were rolled onto the transport truck, and car number seven was caught on video, highlighted by the roar of its monstrous engine. Throw in a massive cowl induction hood and Hoosier slicks, and the mullet-inducing awesomeness of the COPO is hard to beat. At the drag strip, the COPO will go against the supercharged Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and the Mopar Challenger Drag Pak, complete with a 512-cubic-inch V10. The COPO will take them on with a choice of engines that include a naturally aspirated 427 and two supercharged 327 options (one with a 2.9-liter supercharger, the other offering a 4.0-liter screw). Ayer fue el primer día de entrenamientos para la subida Pikes Peak. Hoy, el segundo día estuvo dedicado a los grupos de vehículos supuestamente más rápidos, los de las categorías Unlimited, Time Attack y Open Wheel. Uno podría pensar que las ausencias de Monster Tajima y Rhys Millen, el grupo de los rápidos no sería el mismo. Sin embargo, aparecieron unas cuántas máquinas de infarto, como un par de Ford RS200 o un Honda -Acura al otro lado del charco- NSX de 800 CV preparado por Lovefab Motorsports. Pero sin duda, la palma al bicho más raro se la lleva el Dacia Duster del francés Jean-Philippe Dayraut. Y es que su Duster va ras de suelo y lleva motor de Nissan GT-R. Es el segundo año que corre con el Dacia y este año ha hecho un tiempo de 3'54''96. No longer, as the Evade, an unarmored SUV - we use the acronym "SUV" very lightly - becomes the follow-up beast. The family resemblance is obvious, yet the Evade evolves and softens - another word we use lightly - the design language with details like head- and taillight surrounds, and narrower fender flares. Whereas the Knight XV is built on the Ford F350 Super Duty frame, the Evade's aluminum and mild steel body sits on the F550 Super Duty chassis, so it's even wider. That has only made room for more luxury in the 400-cubic-foot interior for the maximum four passengers, two up front and two in the executive area in the rear. The tourchscreens, laptop trays, three sunroofs, leather and Alcantara inside contrast with protection gear like the 360-degree joystick-controlled searchlights and FLIR night vision front and rear. Los beneficios de la división Jaguar Land Rover fue de 236 millones de libras esterlinas o un 22% menos de lo que los analistas preveían. Estos resultados podrían arrojar el temor de las ventas de la división de lujo británica sufre de la crisis europea y de una economía china en desaceleración. Sin embargo, sus ventas han subido un 34%. En los en los últimos cuatro meses han vendido 83.452 vehículos, de los cuales 11.774 Jaguar y 71.678 Land Rover. Por primera vez en siete meses, las ventas de Jaguar han disminuido en el mes de junio y las de Land Rover han seguido bajando por tercer mes consecutivo (salvo en el caso de best seller Evoque). La presión está en Jaguar que debe renovar su imagen, pues aún sigue prisionera de tantos años de estética dominada por el XJ clásico. En ese sentido la vía a seguir sería la de Land Rover. The automaker is taking a more wait-and-see approach. As Bob Lee, Chrysler Group LLC's head of engine and electrified propulsion engineering, said during Center for Automotive Research's 2012 Management Briefing Seminars, ""We do believe in electrification, sparingly and for the right kinds of targeted applications. ... We're developing technology for commercialization, preparing for the shift when consumers start pulling them into the marketplace." There are other corporate priorities, such as parent company Fiat weathering the financial cataclysm in Europe. There's also the challenge of marketing the small Fiat 500 in the U.S. market at a time when sporty Fiat cars are, for most, merely a memory. Chrysler will begin production of an electric Fiat 500 later this year and will roll it out in 2013. While the company has been testing plug-in hybrid Chrysler Town & Country minivans with municipal fleets and is considering bringing in plug-in hybrid Ram pickups, compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles are more important to Chrysler Group, at least for now. Some of that comes from Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, who emphasizes CNG vehicles and high fuel efficiency internal combustion engine vehicles. Chrysler brought its bi-fuel CNG Ram 2500 pickup to the U.S. market this summer. The deal signed by Rossi will see him wearing Yamaha blue for two years - the 2013 and 2014 seasons - and teaming up once again with Jorge Lorenzo, the 25-year-old Spanish rider who won the World Championship in 2010 and is currently doing the same for 2012. Though Lorenzo is undoubtedly an extremely gifted rider, Rossi is a fan and sponsor favorite and is sure to help Yamaha bring in some much-needed sponsorship dollars. As to who will be filling Rossi's vacated saddle at Ducati, rumor has it that the Italian team is most interested in Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso. Para acompañar la edición impresa han producido un pequeño video de la prueba. Por una vez que nadie espere una música y un montaje espectacular, o varios minutos donde nos cuenta qué se siente al volante y cómo las frenadas le sacan los ojos de sus órbitas. Por una vez, no se andan con fiorituras ni efectos, el Pagani ya es bastante espectacular por si solo. En cambio, uno no puede evitar sonreir como un niño al ver cómo enlaza las curvas y sobre todo cómo funcionan los flaps activos del coche. Well, briefly - the video below spends a lot more time talking about it than actually showing it in action, but you'll just have to tune into Shark Week (next week) for that. The wireframe Beetle-shaped cage that can be driven on the ocean floor is said to be just a quarter-inch off the dimensions of a Beetle Turbo. However, probably the most important thing about any of this is that it has thrusters, which we think should absolutely be a production option starting right now. El CEO de Hyundai Motor Group, Chung Mong-koo tiene grandes planes para Europa, pero sólo para Hyundai. Y es que el hijo del fundador de Hyundai quiere aumentar las ventas de su marca un 15% este año para alcanzar las 465.000 unidades, mientras que la otra marca del grupo, Kia, debería ver sus ventas aumentar un 21% para alcanzar los 350.000 coches. Chung visitó por primera vez Europa el pasado mes de marzo con motivo del salón de Ginebra. Un periodista de Automotive News tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistarlo. Chung explicó que gracias a su s inversiones en invetisgación y desarrollo, así como en su red comercial, en los paises emergentes y en mejorar constantemente la calidad de sus productos han llegado a inquietar Volkswagen (haciendo referencia a un comentario de Martin Winterkorn, CEO de VW, quien decía que "vigilaba de cerca a Hyundai"). Al mismo tiempo que Chung reconoce que VW es un fabricante de vehículos de alta tecnología y calidad, con una larga tradición, Hyundai prefiere "seguir desarrollando su negocio sin hacer mucho ruido y sin centrarse en un solo rival". Chung destaca también por una humildad típicamente asiática. Mientras que los dirigentes del grupo VAG quieren quitarle el trono de nº1 mundial a Toyota o que Renault lucha por ser el primer europeo, Chung afirma querer ser el nº1, "pero no en volumen, sino en calidad". En cuanto a los fabricantes chinos, Chung se mostró sereno y no los teme, pero tampoco los menosprecia. Sabe que aprenden rápido y van creciendo muy deprisa. Por último reconoce que gracias a la mejora de la calidad de sus vehículos sus ventas han aumentado y por tanto pudieron reducir sus costes fijos, de este modo Hyundai tuvo un margen de beneficio del 10,3% en 2011, mientras que el de BMW fue del 11,3%. Y un mayor margen de beneficio implica mayores inversiones en el futuro. Quizá Winterkorn tenga razón de vigilar a Hyundai. That's the countdown until we get our first live, in-person look at the next iteration of the BMW M3, according to AutoWeek. The F80 M3 will be appear on the BMW stand at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in "lightly veiled concept" form, according to the report, with the production car bowing at the Frankfurt show next fall. The performance sedan won't go on sale until the end of 2013 here in the U.S., with coupe and convertible versions and one of BMW's odd Gran Coupe models following in later years.AutoWeek says the M3 will be a mix of steel with some aluminum body panels, powered by a turbocharged inline-six making about 450 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Although rumors of a 3.3-liter V6 based on BMW's larger V8 engine persist, the more shocking speculation involves the gearbox, which is said to be a dual-clutch with seven speeds. That's right, no manual transmission will be offered, according to the report. Of course, BMW has attempted to make that move before with the M5. Fortunately, enough complaints from American customers caused the company to change its mind. Lacking a rear window put the R8 e-tron in the same rear-view challenged category as its racing brethren, and so has been provided the same solution. The 7.7-inch AMOLED screen receives the feed from a tiny camera just a few millimeters across. The screen is dimmable, will automatically reduce the glare from the headlights of cars behind, and can be switched off if the driver just isn't with it. For now, it appears the screen will just display the camera image, but Audi says it's working on adding more information to the display in the future. All of the affected models are from the 2011 and 2012 model years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the wiper arms on these Transit Connect models may not have been properly riveted, resulting in "incomplete or inconsistent clearing of the windshield and possible detachment of the wiper arm." NHTSA points out that if the wiper becomes detached, a driver's visibility can be reduced, which can of course lead to a crash. Ford will begin notifying Transit Connect owners about this problem starting in mid-August, and dealers will replace both wiper arms on affected vehicles free of charge.
