BMW thinks the answer is blowing in the Internet. For the first time ever, BMW will sell some of its cars online - and it turns out that it's the electric cars that prompted the change. BMW's i brand vehicles, which currently include the i3, i8 and i8 Spyder (pictured) concepts, will be sold online. But wait, you're saying, didn't the automaker just open up a fancy new EV story in London? Yes, it did, but it's more of a technology showcase kind of thing right now, especially since the first target on-sale date for an i brand vehicle is late 2013 anyway. Given that, as the Detroit News reports, BMW is spending $3 billion to bring the i3 and i8 to market, being able to save an estimated five-to-seven percent through online sales compared to traditional showroom costs is a big deal. Those are the numbers that one analyst gave the News, but the caveat is that the details of how the online sales will work are not yet defined. For instance, even though plug-in vehicle buyers tend to be younger and more connected than average (though there are sweet exceptions), how do you deal with test drives? The News says that a "roaming sales force" could be used, which sounds to us a lot like the EV demo tours that other companies have used. BMW was willing to say that sales will be targeted at "major urban areas." Some current BMW dealers will be allowed to have (and sell) the i brand vehicles on the lot. Basically, the dealer will need to be selling a lot of BMWs already and have the space for the i brand information displays. Six of those 20 ads are automotive-related, which should come as no surprise, considering the amount of money automakers pour into car ads. Adweek did not factor in movie trailers, or banned international ads. Both would throw the curve of top ads, and the latter would certainly include a few car commercials. Most of these videos are less than three years old, highlighting the widespread accessibility to smartphones and streaming video. It should come as a shock to no one that Kia's Dancing Hamsters are on the list. The breakdacing rodents have been busting moves since 2009, but it was their collaboration with LMFAO to crash a video game that got them onto this list. Also on the list is Ken Block's Gymkhana, which we tend to forget is a DC Shoes commercial. While Adweek views it as merely an ad for this story's purposes, we know that Block's automotive acrobatics are far more than a shill for shoes. The spy shots frankly don't tell us much more than that, since the mule is wrapped in an ill-fitting Quattroporte body giving away little more than a shorter wheelbase and smaller brakes. The Levante, if that's what it's called, will be Maserati's entry into the luxury full-sized sedan segment to compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. Said to arrive late next year, it will have its luxury ducks in a row, supposedly offering a twin-turbo V6, a V8 and a 300-horsepower diesel with 500 pound-feet of torque. Questions about engines and their provenance remain; the next Quattroporte is getting a Ferrari-sourced supercharged V6 and turbocharged V8, but it is wondered if the Levante's V6 might come from the other side of the Fiat stable, namely Chrysler. The 2001-04 Escape as well as 2001-2006 and 2008 Tribute SUVs have a design flaw that may cause a stuck throttle even if the vehicle's cruise control system has not been turned on by the driver. Last week, the NHTSA Office of Defect Investigation announced an on-going probe of consumer complaints of stuck throttles with the Ford and Mazda SUVs. And safety engineers have now determined that "inadequate clearance between the [vehicle's] engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed." Both Ford and Mazda are expected to alert affected owners of Escape and Tribute SUVs—estimated at more than 660,000 vehicles in the United States—and begin free repairs soon. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2007-2009 Santa Fe SUVs may contain faulty electronics that may not detect small front seat passengers and fail to deploy the air bags in a collision. Meanwhile 2012-2013 model year Hyundai Sonata sedans may have side air bags that suddenly deploy—even without a side-impact collision. According to Hyundai, the front air bags will not deploy in the 2007-2009 Santa Fe SUVs due to an error in the Occupant Classification Systems' software. More than 199,000 of the Hyundai SUVs in the United States will be recalled by the company to correct this safety flaw. The company will also recall approximately 22,500 of its 2012-13 Hyundai Sonata sedans after receiving 16 consumer complaints of sudden and unexpected side air-bag deployment. The automaker has unveiled its HR412E, a 1.6-liter, turbocharged and direct injected gas engine, and let us know its plans for getting the engine and car into some races: Tiago Monteiro will race one example in the final three rounds of the season, beginning with Suzuka, and multiple touring car champion Gabriele Tarquini will join him for races in the second car as of 2013. Tarquini is doing development work on the car this year. The car itself is currently in Milan, Italy being tested and prepped by JAS Motorsport, a collaboration we've already had a taste of in the dirt with their Honda Jazz rally car. Honda has also partnered with Mugen on its WTCC project. It will be three months before we see the Civic WTCC going for the checkered flag, the Suzuka race running October 19-21. Ahora parece que las cosas no están tan claras. Según parece el nuevo Impuesto a Productos Industralizados (Super IPI) es el culpable principal de este parón en los planes iniciales. Este impuesto aumenta el coste de los vehículos importados en nada menos que un 30% (sobre unos precios ya bastante inflados) y está vigente desde diciembre del año pasado. Los responsables de JAC han paralizado el proyecto y no retomarán el asunto hasta que el gobierno tenga una decisión clara sobre la posible flexibilización de esta tasa. En el primer semestre las ventas de JAC en Brasil han ido a la baja debido a las altas tasas impositivas que tratan de beneficiar a aquellos productos de fabricación local. Take a look at the fall and rise of the Senate Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Caucus. Yes, after years of a decidedly anti-hydrogen DOE, the federal government is giving H2 some more attention, and Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chris Coons (D-DE), Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and John Hoeven (R-ND) decided to get the band back together, re-launching the Caucus during a luncheon in Washington, D.C. recently. What's interesting is that the flyer put out by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association announcing the revived caucus has three pictures on in, none of them are of cars. Instead, there's a forklift, a bus and a building. The press release put out announcing the re-launch also only lists hydrogen-powered vehicles as one small part of the larger role that fuel cells will play in the coming years. With the Olympics in town, the city has become besieged with tourists, athletes and officials. The price of hotel rooms have skyrocketed, and the presence of Olympic-only bus lanes have locked up everyone else, who must share the road. The length of a cab ride has jumped tremendously. It must be a maddening experience, but one London taxi driver has found a solution that benefits both he and at least one tourist per night. David Weekes has turned his taxi into a hotel room, and for $75 a night one guest can stay in the back seat of his London Taxi TX4. It comes equipped with mattress, bedding, alarm clock, and a Paddington Bear. Due to the difficulties of being a taxi driver during the Olympics, many have contemplated leaving town until the games are over. Weekes, on the other hand, offers tourists relief from the high hotel rates. The taxi remains in his driveway overnight, and if you need to use the restroom, simply knock on his door. It's all part of the unique living experience. So is getting driven to your hotel room, in your hotel room. Ewanick and GM top brass have clashed in recent months over some of the marketing chief's moves and style, even as the company empowered the former Hyundai marketing chief to overhaul the Detroit automaker's creative and media-buying relationships, putting new shops in charge of handling GM's vast $3 billion media budget. "It has been a privilege and honor to work with the GM team and to be a small part of Detroit's turnaround. I wish everyone at GM all the best." - Joel Ewanick Ewanick's departure was not friendly, say GM insiders. "I can tell you that he failed to meet the expectations the company has for its employees," said GM spokesman Greg Martin. That is a highly unusual comment from a corporate spokesman. GM sources are saying Monday that a key to Ewanick's downfall was the way he handled recent big-money sponsorship deals with British soccer clubs Manchester United and Liverpool Football Club on behalf of Chevrolet. The deals, according to insiders, were not properly vetted inside GM's processes. The term "serious breaches" are being thrown around GM today. Ewanick Tweeted a short comment on Sunday: "It has been a privilege and honor to work with the GM team and to be a small part of Detroit's turnaround. I wish everyone at GM all the best." "It's odd the way this whole things has gone," said one GM insider who asked not to be identified. "They let the guy completely overhaul the structure of the place, and then show him the door?" The same executive speculated, "So, now someone else will come in and probably want to do things his or her way, and then we will have more change and upheaval instead of doing what we need to do, which is hunker down and build these brands up in a coherent way so we can get off the tax-payer's back." Si te gusta trastear por internet estoy seguro que habrás visto millones de vídeos relacionados con Rusia y sus conductores. Hacen realmente de todo en cualquier situación y se exponen más de la cuenta para tener un accidente. No queremos generalizar y seguro habrá conductores que respeten las normas, pero últimamente las mayores burradas provienen de allí, al menos que estén grabadas. En este vídeo, que encontrarás tras el salto, verás como un conductor se venga de otro al no haberle cedido espacio para incorporarse tras salir de un rotonda e incorporarse a una nueva vía. Tras un breve pique en plan "aquí estoy yo y no me mueve nadie", el conductor del todoterreno (un Toyota Prado) decide adelantar y buscar la mejor manera para hacerle pagar "ese feo detalle". | Posted: 30 Jul 2012 02:57 PM PDT  Watch Chevy's Camaro 1LE lap VIR in 2:58:34 Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Videos, Chevrolet There are two draws in the pony-car competition bracket: brawn-über-alles pits the 580-horsepower Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 against the 650-hp Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, while the track-day killers set the 426-hp Camaro 1LE against the 444-hp Mustang Boss 302. And all of them are eventually tested in anger at Virginia International Raceway, which could one day become our own Nürburgring based on the cars that have set times there. Answering that challenge, the Camaro 1LE has just come from posting a 2:58.34 around VIR. According to the list at FastestLaps.com, that puts the Camaro 1LE exactly midway between the 2005 lap time of a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 at 2:58.20 and the 550-horsepower 2011 GT500 which did 2:58.48. For better comparison, the 1LE is 6.1 seconds behind the Camaro ZL1, 4.46 seconds ahead of the Boss 302 Laguna Seca, and within two seconds of serious handlers like the Porsche 911 Turbo S, Ariel Atom 3 and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, all run in the last two years (although we don't know who the Porsche and Mercedes drivers were). FastestLaps lists a time of 2:58.00 for a "659-hp" GT500, but the year tested is "0" and we aren't sure what the story is there. Not a bad day's work for the $37,035 Camaro, which starts at a price nearly $13,000 less than the Boss 302 Laguna Seca.
