When equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual gearbox, the sedan returns 20 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg highway. More importantly, it manages 24 mpg combined. Those figures put it at exactly 1 mpg behind the base model's naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder and its six-speed automatic in every category. The Verano Turbo also ties the larger Regal GS with the same drivetrain in city and combined mileage, but loses out to its bigger brother on the highway front by 1 mpg. That's despite the fact that that the Regal Turbo tips the scales at a full 371 pounds heavier than the forced-induction Verano. The slimmer waistline on the Verano does pay dividends in the 0-60 sprint, however. Niceties like track runoff and Armco barriers are replaced with sturdy oak trees, water hazards and some nice old lady's front porch. Hell, just getting out of the car post-off can be hazardous to your health. Just ask the BRAKIM Racing team. Driver and co-driver suffered a brief miscommunication last weekend during Stage 7 of Rally West Virginia, which was enough to put the team's Subaru down a quick embankment. After the party came to a stop, the co-driver decided to do his best to extricate himself from the car by climbing up and out of the passenger window. That's when things began to get really hairy. Ladies and gentlemen, please keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times. Amazingly enough, no one was harmed. That's what General Electric is saying after reports surfaced that some charging stations - namely, its GE WattStations - were causing the on-board charger in some Nissan Leafs to be damaged. General Electric says it's a software issue specific to Nissan's electric car, as proven by the fact that no other types of electric vehicles suffered charger damage after using a WattStation. GE, which has created a web page laying out the facts related to this issue, also said Nissan was advising Leaf owners to avoid charging during times such as brownouts when power-delivery levels may plunge. "Nissan and GE have completed their investigation into the instances of Nissan Leafs experiencing on-board charging (OBC) issues when using certain EV chargers," GE spokesman Sean Gannon said in a statement sent to AutoblogGreen. "Nissan has traced the root cause of the issue to the LEAFs OBC software that can allow damage to occur to its OBC components while using certain chargers and in certain instances, such as when a brief under voltage or blackout condition occurs." Additionally, Gannon said, contrary to what had been reported, use of the WattStation does not void the warranty on the Nissan Leaf and the automaker never told dealers to avoid having the Leafs recharged with WattStations. If the cruiser from the B52's infamous "Love Shack" really was as big as a whale, the Conti was the ocean in which that mighty Chrysler swam. I held the title for roughly 13 years, and in that time, I got the car sideways exactly once. Now, I was certainly no newcomer to ass-out antics when this scenario played out, but I found myself woefully under-prepared for the combination of feather-light steering, neglected bushings, flimsy sidewalls and the sinister abundance of mass that I unleashed on that unsuspecting intersection one spring night. Traffic cleared, the secondaries on the Holley 750 double pumper opened up and all 500 lb-ft of torque from the 460 under the hood spilt the rear tires' guts onto the asphalt in a smoky sacrifice to glory. Momentum piled on as I struggled to swing the tiller from starboard to port and keep the craft out of either ditch. Even amidst the curses and 7,000 turns to lock, I was vaguely aware of the four girls in the back seat impersonating a Newton's Cradle as they slid across the green leather rear bench with each wag of the tail lamps. I tell you this for one very simple reason. Either way, Hyundai is indeed working on some sort of vehicle to slot between its two sedans in China. The intent, according to Reuters, is to create a vehicle that is smaller and more affordable than the current Sonata but still roomy and upscale enough for middle-class buyers looking to trade up from compact cars. Two people with direct knowledge of the new Hyundai have reportedly referred to this vehicle as "Sonata-lite." Frank Ahrens, a Hyundai spokesman, confirmed to Reuters that the automaker intends "to produce a new model sized between the Sonata and the Elantra." Hyundai has no plans to offer this model in any other markets. By adding this new model, Hyundai hopes to regain some of the market share that it's lost in China during the first half of 2012. Lo que la firma nos deja ver es el aspecto definitivo de su frontal, idéntico al del Countryman dicho sea de paso, y parte del perfil. Aunque esconden con un ligero camuflaje la vista 3/4 posterior, podemos apreciar que no hay muchas diferencias con el prototipo visto hace unos meses con mismo nombre. For now. The U.S. automaker, which is controlled by Italy-based Fiat, will start installing eight-speed transmissions in some of its vehicles by the end of the year, with nine-speed trannies in store for 2013, Bloomberg News reported, citing Mircea Gradu, the automaker's vice president of transmission powertrain and driveline engineering. Eight- and nine-speed transmissions are said to boost fuel efficiency by about 15 percent relative to more conventional transmissions. There is a physical limit though. ZF North American President Julio Caspari told Automotive News earlier this month that the advancement of fuel efficiency through more gears has just about gone as far as it can go. He claimed that there is just an 11-percent difference between today's best transmissions and a theoretically perfect unit. This news comes despite the fact that GM recently informed Joel Ewanick, the brains behind the firm, that his services were no longer necessary. These reports further speculation that it was more than just a botched sponsorship deal with sports team Manchester United that led to the global marketing boss' demise. Ewanick's other high-profile decisions at GM included dropping out of 2012 Super Bowl advertising and decimating the $10 million that was earmarked for Facebook advertising, a move announced just days before the social media site's IPO. All of these actions played into the same cost-cutting strategy that brought about Commonwealth. Ewanick's brainchild, Commonwealth is only four months old. The Detroit-based Detroit-based ad agency is estimated to save GM $2 billion over the next five years. The advertising house and the cost-cutting plans are still in place, but Ewanick is out. GM says that the executive "failed to meet expectations the company has set for its employees." He was given the option to resign, and at age 52 with stints at both Nissan and Hyundai under his belt, he stepped down from the chair of his very creation. Sí, este GT86 participará en una carrera de resistencia, mientras que en el caso del 918 Spyder Martini no queda claro si lo hará. La decoración elegida por Toyota GB hace referencia a la del mítico AE86 que compitió en los años 80 en el campeonato británico de turismos, con "un tal Tiff Needell" al volante... Photographers spotted the high performance sedan undergoing hot-weather testing in Death Valley. Engineers peeled back a slab of heavy nose cladding for the first time, revealing the machine's menacing lower valance and headlamps. The design features sizable air intakes down low, and it looks as if a new hood is part of the recipe as well. If these photos are any indication, the M3 will continue to boast a prominent power bulge for the next model year. Massive drilled rotors and similarly potent-looking calipers are part of the song and dance, which is a good thing. BMW has made it clear the 2014 M3 will bow with a forced induction inline six in place of the current model's fire-breathing high-rev V8. The new HP4, on the other hand, is a 1000-cc class bike using an evolution of the four-cylinder engine from the BMW S 1000 RR sport bike. A homologation special, the configuration isn't the only first in the HP4's arsenal: it comes standard with an active, electrically-actuated Dynamic Damping Control, a torque-adjusting Launch Control system, and BMW claims its the lightest four-cylinder supersports bike in its class, with a dry weight of 169 kg (371.8 pounds) and 199kg (437.8 pounds) with a 90-percent full tank. Bits like the lightweight, forged wheels, titanium exhaust and lighter sprocket carrier and battery have helped shed the pounds. The engine cranks out 193 horsepower and 82 foot-pounds, the same numbers as on the S 1000 RR. However, every bit of horsepower is available in all the traction control modes, torque response has been boosted from 6,000 rpm, and the torque delivery curve is smoother when the traction control is in Rain mode. Helping a rider keep it all under control are that Launch Control, a shift assistant for seamless gearchanges, an updated, four-mode Race ABS system, traction control that can be adjusted on the fly, and Brembo monoblock brake calipers. There's a competition package offered to harden its edge further, and a passenger package if you need to go the other way, but with two. El Hyundai Veloster no es precisamente el compacto deportivo que nos prometía Hyundai. Por haber tenido la ocasión de probarlo, es más bien un objeto de diseño que un deportivo. Eso sí, peculiar, el diseño... Aún así, Hyundai prepara una versión Turbo del Veloster. Por alguna extraña razón, el motor que en otros mercados desarolla 204 CV tendrá en Europa 183 CV (tal y como te lo explicábamos aquí). Sin embargo, no es por las normas anticontaminación. Según Hyundai, es para ser más europeo en su carácter al incrementar ligeramente el par motor máximo de 264 Nm a 270 Nm. La cuestión es que es casi 1 segundo más lento en el 0 a 100 km/h que el de 204 CV; 7,4 segundos para este último. De todos modos, ya sea con turbo o no, el Veloster va a necesitar algo más si quiere tener un poquito de éxito en Europa. Varios sitios webs norteamericanos especulan sobre la posibilidad de una variante aún más potente que podría entonces rivalizar con modelos más asentados en Europa, como el VW Scirocco o el Renault Mégane R.S. Eso sí, Hyundai lo tiene complicado para hacernos olvidar su diseño. Recordemos que en más del 70% de los casos el factor determinante de compra es la estética. Y de momento, el Veloster, no es que convenza mucho. The hybrid version of the Jazz, known as the Fit in the U.S., is gaining popularity in Asian markets outside of Japan, hence the new production markets. Honda said the Jazz Hybrid, which pairs an 88-horsepower gas engine with a 14-horsepower electric motor, uses 4.7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, which equals about 50 miles per gallon. In the U.S., the EPA rates the most-efficient 2012 Fit, the 1.5-liter 5-speed automatic, at 31 combined mpg, 28 in the city and 35 on the highway. Earlier this month, Honda broke ground on a Malaysian factory line that will include Jazz Hybrid production. Honda's looking to more than double annual Jazz Hybrid sales in Malaysia to more than 10,000 units. The Nikkei reported in May that Honda would take Jazz Hybrid production to Thailand. The Thai auto industry, the world's 12th largest, took a massive hit with last year's flood that killed more than 800 people. | Posted: 31 Jul 2012 01:34 PM PDT  Report: NHTSA investigating 2013 Infiniti JX over e-brake concern Filed under: Safety, Technology, Crossover, Infiniti, Luxury An investigation has been opened by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration into the 2013 Infiniti JX over possible issues with the emergency brake. Specifically, the probe is looking at improper application of the e-brake, according to a Reuters report. While the investigation of 8,000 new Infiniti crossovers is not a recall, it could eventually trigger one if the government agency doesn't like what it finds. The probe was launched after a pair of owners reported to NHTSA that "the intelligent brake assist system inappropriately activated emergency braking autonomously bringing the vehicle to an immediate and complete stop." One can see the potential danger in a vehicle that stops unintentionally and without warning. Cheeky Germans. As we know, the Paceman is coming early next year as a late-to-market 2013 model. Despite reports that Mini would be dropping the catchy name that christened its original concept in favor of the more literal Countryman Coupe moniker, none other than Dr. Kay Segler, senior vice president of Mini brand management has gone on record saying that the Paceman name is for real. Also for real is the rest of the Paceman concept's design, starting with the rear-slanting roofline, which strikes us as a better-executed take on the Mini Cooper Coupe design. In fact, to our eyes, the entire back half of the Paceman looks better proportioned and more Mini-like than the awkwardly large Countryman.
