The droptop ZL1 will start at $60,445, and the less-powerful 1LE will sticker for $37,035. Both prices include a $900 destination charge. To refresh, the ZL1 Convertible is simply the soft-top version of the Ford Shelby GT500-fighting Camaro ZL1 Coupe, packing a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under its hood, good for 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque. For the sake of comparison, know that the 2013 GT500 Convertible retails for $59,995 (including $750 for destination) and packs 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. But remember, when it comes to range-topping muscle cars like these, power isn't everything. The 2013 Camaro 1LE builds upon the current SS model in a similar fashion to how the Boss 302 improves upon the Mustang GT formula. The 1LE package includes better suspension geometry, lighter wheels wrapped in better-performing tires, and as Oppenheiser stated during Sunday's press conference, the end result is a "damn fun car to drive." In fact, Chevrolet is so confident that the 1LE is an excellent performer, Oppenheiser stated that he expects this Camaro to stand up closer to the Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca - not just the standard Boss. That said, the 1LE offers quite the cost advantage compared to Ford's Boss. A standard 302 starts at $42,995, and the Laguna Seca ups that number to $49,990 (both prices include the $750 destination charge). These two new models aside, there are a few other changes to speak of regarding the 2013 Camaro line. The V8-powered SS models now come standard with electric power-assisted steering, as well as GM's dual-mode exhaust sound system. V6 models will also get the fancy exhaust work starting in the fall. What's more, Chevrolet's new MyLink infotainment system will be standard on LT, SS and ZL1 models for 2013, and no, just like the new bit of tech for the Spark and Sonic, a CD player is not included. We'll be driving the new 2013 Camaros this week, so stay tuned for full driving impressions.2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible priced from $60,445, Camaro 1LE from $37,035 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 21:45:00 EST. His pro touring creations are nothing short of legendary, and as a suspension engineer for General Motors, if anyone knows how to wring more performance out of a Bowtie, it's Stielow. His latest project, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro lovingly dubbed "Red Devil," is the eleventh '69 he's built in the past 23 years. It boasts a 7.0-liter block from a Corvette Z06 topped with the heads, valvetrain and supercharger from the Corvette ZR1. An Eaton TVS blower shoves 12 psi into each combustion chamber, helping to generate 756 horsepower. The grunt is dumped to the rear wheels via Tremec six-speed. Big numbers, but are they enough to help the Red Devil top its progeny, the Camaro ZL1? The guys at Hot Rod magazine decided to find out by pitting the cars against each other at Michigan's GingerMan Raceway. We won't spoil the results here, but we will say Stielow believes he laid down the quickest lap time at GingerMan for any new ZL1, even besting the efforts Automobile Magazine and their pro driver. Posted: 29 Jul 2012 05:44 PM PDT ![]() Global Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick leaves GM General Motors Global Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick is no longer with the company. A press release issued by GM states that Ewanick had "elected to resign immediately," while a report by Automotive News claims he was dismissed, with GM spokesman Greg Martin commenting, "He failed to meet the expectations the company has of an employee." With no further elaboration, it's impossible to say what circumstances led to Ewanick's abrupt departure, but his rather short two-year tenure at the company is at an end regardless. His interim replacement is Alan Bately, current vice president, U.S. Sales and Service. Ewanick, 52, was hired by General Motors as U.S. Marketing Chief in May 2010 and named Global Marketing Chief, a new position, in December 2010. Previously he did a short stint as the head of marketing at Nissan North America, but was best known for his work before that at Hyundai Motor America. Ewanick might be remembered most for the GM's decision to pull its advertising dollars from Facebook, citing the social network's ineffectiveness shortly before its initial public offering of stock. He also announced that GM would not be advertising in next year's Super Bowl and was the man in charge when Chevrolet unveiled its controversial "Chevy Runs Deep" campaign. Other decisions made by Ewanick may have a more lasting, if less visible, effect on General Motors. For instance, Ewanick led a recent effort to consolidate GM's creative marketing and advertising agencies, a move that has been estimated to save the company $2 billion over five years. In the case of Chevrolet, the brand transferred all of its business from dozens of agencies around the world to one newly created joint venture called Commonwealth of Detroit that located itself in the city of Detroit, bringing with it new talent and 280 new jobs.Continue reading Global Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick leaves GMGlobal Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick leaves GM originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 20:15:00 EST. Posted: 29 Jul 2012 05:44 PM PDT ![]() GMC dissects the names of its own pickups Filed under: Classics, Truck, Etc., GMC, Design/Style Ever wondered how the GMC Sierra 1500 got is name? Or why a 1/2-ton pickup can carry almost a 2,000 pound payload? General Motors sets the record straight. For starters, the Sierra name was first used to denote upscale trim packages in the 1970s and '80s. In 1989, the name was applied to all GMC full-size pickups. No big mystery there. Then there's the 1500 moniker. GMC began using the numbers 1500, 2500 and 3500 in 1967. While the digits do indicate hauling capabilities, they aren't the trucks' actual cargo limits. In fact, they refer to the "first segment of vehicle identification numbers," GM says. Since then, all American automakers use 15, 25 and 35 in their trucks' names to indicate their abilities. Then there's the 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton and 1-ton indicators. Back in 1912, the numbers meant what they said. A 1/2-ton truck's hauling prowess maxed out at a 1/2 ton. But no more... "The payload-based naming convention for pickups existed right from the beginning," said General Motors Heritage Center Manager Greg Wallace. "The ½-ton, ¾-ton, and 1-ton models became most popular with retail customers over a few decades, not just for GMC but all manufacturers. While payload capacities have grown since, those three names stuck." So there you go, a 1/2-ton of mysteries solved. Posted: 29 Jul 2012 04:32 PM PDT ![]() Report: Hand gesture controls coming to a car near you? Filed under: Technology, Infotainment It looks as if the gesture-sensitive interface for the Cadillac Cue infotainment system is just the beginning of gesture integration in our vehicles. Wired reports that Microsoft is already investigating ways to incorporate technology lifted from its Xbox Kinect. Likewise, Harman has unveiled a new system that recognizes both hand and facial cues to control various cabin features. Drivers can reportedly use eye blinks to turn the stereo on, tilt their heads to turn up the volume and even tap the steering wheel to skip songs. Temperature adjustment gets taken care of by raising or lowering a hand above the gear shift, while pulling up a Bluetooth-connected phone is as simple as mimicking a phone with a hand. How does it work? The system relies on an infrared sensor to "watch" for certain gestures. When it sees them, it passes a signal to separate processor, which in turn handles the connected hardware. That sounds all well and good, but as anyone who's stood cursing at a motion-activated faucet in an airport restroom can tell you, these systems aren't foolproof. Fortunately, Harman says it won't have anything ready for market until it's been thoroughly tested, which may be up to three years from now.Hand gesture controls coming to a car near you? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 19:02:00 EST. Posted: 29 Jul 2012 03:22 PM PDT ![]() Is $1/hour the right price for plug-in car charging? Industry says yes Filed under: EV/Plug-in, USA Owners of public electric-vehicle charging stations would do well to bill their customers about a $1 per hour. That's the rate where they can make money but won't make EV drivers feel gouged, according to the Christian Science Monitor reports, citing several members of the EV charging station industry. Pat Romano, CEO of EV-charging station maker Coulomb Technologies, told the publication that $2 an hour is "expensive," especially given that most EVs charge at a rate of about 3.3 kilowatts per hour - and that much energy usually costs about 50 cents. The subject is topical because the time of free charging is starting to come to an end. Many states control the utilities that supply the electricity and, therefore, the pricing. Still, California, the most populous U.S. state, recent passed a law that lets owners of charging stations set their own charging rates. Either way, per-hour pricing may ruffle some feathers because cars like the Tesla Model S and Coda Sedan suck up electricity at about twice the rate of cars like the Nissan Leaf, according to the Monitor. There are about 12,000 EV charging stations throughout the U.S., with about 4,300 that are publicly accessible, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Coulomb, which two years ago set a goal to install 4,500 stations throughout the U.S., reported in April that it had shipped more than 2,400 units. Is $1/hour the right price for plug-in car charging? Posted: 29 Jul 2012 12:26 PM PDT ![]() Report: France unveils green incentive to rescue auto industry Filed under: Hybrid, Europe, Government/Legal, Plants/Manufacturing, Peugeot, Citroën, Electric PSA Peugeot Citroën and the French goverment have been negotiating how to repair the company's business position without ruining the new government's promises to the electorate. At last count, Peugeot wants to send 14,000 workers home for good, close a factory in Aulnay, and trim some of its 25% overcapacity. The automaker desperately wants to sell more cars to help it stop losing €200 million ($246M U.S.) per month. The government has already nixed the most drastic plans, but it needs to keep Peugeot from drowning at the same time as doing so saves jobs, encourages domestic car sales, and balances a nasty state budget. In addition, any maneuver needs to keep the EU's competition watchdog from intervening.Dow Jones reports that the solution involves increasing cash incentives for EV and hybrid purchases and raising taxes on "high emission vehicles." France already provides a €5,000 subsidy for EVs and €2,000 for hybrids, but those will see a €2,000 bump to €7,000 and €4,000, respectively. The CO2 output or engine displacement that would qualify a vehicle as "high emission" isn't stated. Supplemental and longer-term plans include asking the EU to examine a free-trade agreement with South Korea that France says has resulted in a glut of South Korean cars, and providing €600 million in lifelines to smaller, struggling automaker suppliers. From our perspective, the measures look like more of the same largely-useless pussyfooting that has kept Europe staring at the economic apocalypse for more than two years. In a New York Times article about Europe's "day of reckoning," Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said, "I've never seen it this bad. All the unresolved issues that have been plaguing the industry for a number of years have all come forward." Austerity measures on top of the general European economy are keeping buyers away, and we have no idea how another €2,000 on the hood is supposed to spur enough demand for EVs and hybrids to help Peugeot and Citroën. Even if they tripled their sales numbers, they'd still be niche vehicles. The problem right now is that in 30 days Peugeot will be another €200 million in the hole, and neither the company nor the government can allow that to continue, else they'll both be taking even bigger lumps soon enough.France unveils green incentive to rescue auto industry originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 15:02:00 EST. Continue reading Fotos espía: Nuevo SEAT Ibiza Cupra de producciónFotos espía: Nuevo SEAT Ibiza Cupra de producción originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 14:21:00 EST. Posted: 29 Jul 2012 12:25 PM PDT ![]() 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee passes German "moose test" Filed under: SUV, Europe, Safety, Chrysler, JeepChrysler has released a press release detailing the findings of a recent 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee "moose test" by the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. The publication ran the Grand Cherokee through conditions supposedly identical to those in a test conducted by the Swedish magazine Teknikens Varld, which saw the SUV nearly roll over after an abrupt lane change. After AMS loaded the Jeep with a varying number of passengers and the maximum amount of cargo, it said the vehicle remained stable with all four wheels on the ground during abrupt maneuvers. As you may recall, Teknikens Varld produced a video showing the Grand Cherokee lift up onto two wheels during a simulated emergency lane change. Chrysler responded by saying the Jeep was intentionally overloaded and even sent a team of engineers to reproduce the test with the Swedish magazine. Take a look at the press release posted below for more information, including a translation of the text from Auto Motor und Sport.Continue reading 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee passes German "moose test"2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee passes German "moose test" originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 13:33:00 EST.
