That's why we admire folks who poke fun at the insanity of the automotive aftermarket. Take this particular Dodge Viper owner. Rather than swap in the latest short-throw kit, the guy bolted on a four-foot-long shift knob. Why? According to his YouTube account, he was jealous of drivers with longer knobs. Har Har. He helpfully points out that the modification won't work on GTS coupes or hardtops due to clearance issues. Regardless, the owner promises the modification will "get you lots of attention GUARANTEED." No arguments there. Republican Senator Charles Grassley has said questions remain about what caused unintended acceleration instances in the Japanese manufacturer's vehicles, specifically whether or not the trouble was caused by electronic glitches. Grassley specifically questioned whether NHTSA had the experience necessary to diagnose the defect. The senator also wondered why NHTSA investigators called in NASA scientists for assistance during the investigation. Strickland, meanwhile, has responded by saying NHTSA did, in fact, have the requisite experience and that NASA was called upon for a second opinion. The administrator underscored the fact that neither NHTSA nor NASA could find an electronic reason for the claims of unintended acceleration. As you may recall, the government agency concluded in early 2011 that faulty gas pedals and floor mats were to blame for the runaway syndrome. According to The Washington Post, Grassley's letter stemmed from tips from whistleblowers who claim the runaway vehicles were actually caused by errant strands of solder within the pedal assembly itself. Those strands could reportedly cause shorts within the system. The one-of-a-kind sports car was penned by Chrysler design guru Virgil Exner, who always hoped Chrysler would include a roadster in its lineup. The XNR featured a powerful six-cylinder engine that pumped out 250 horses and gave the XNR a top of speed of 150 mph. Ultimately, the project never got the green light, and the XNR was shipped back to Carrozzeria Ghia in Italy, where it was built. From there, the car's story gets more interesting. A series of owners bought it in the '60s, and it wound up in the Shah of Iran's garage. It was sold again before it disappeared. In the early 1980s, car collector Karim Edde discovered the XNR in Beirut, Lebanon, hidden away in an underground garage. He bought the car and shuffled it around safe houses as the civil war erupted around him. Twenty years later, Edde had the XNR fully restored. Since it's a concept, there were no spare parts and whatever could not be repaired was fabricated. RM Auctions has not suggested a price the XNR will go for, but we hope its next owner continues the car's legacy. Denominado D50, por ahora sólo podía adquirirse con carrocería sedán. hoy la firma ha mostrado la primera imagen del nuevo R50, apelativo final que llevará una vez llegue al mercado. El diseño no es que enamore, pero tampoco lo hacía el Tiida y tuvo un elevado éxito en China. Sin tocar en exceso la base original, recibe una zaga más personal con ópticas de gran tamaño y un portón completamente nuevo. El frontal es el mismo que ya habíamos visto en la berlina, es decir, no tiene nada que ver con el Nissan. Y le ha salido una réplica bastante lograda. Pero no solo a nivel estético, como un auténtico Grupo B dispone de una potencia de 800 CV. Como prueba del excelente resultado obtenido, es el coche del campeón búlgaro de montaña de 2011. En el video se le ve participar en la subida a Kyustendil, prueba puntuable para el campeonato 2012. La lista de modificaciones es más larga que un día sin pan. The automaker announced this week that sometime in June its 200,000,000th vehicle rolled off the assembly line. Toyota's feat took the company 76 years and 11 months. It has been in the car business since August 1935, but it wasn't until 1972 that Toyota managed to produce its first 10 million vehicles - some 36 years that were, of course, interrupted by World War II. In the past four decades, however, Toyota has grown at a tremendous rate, with its next 190 million vehicles taking just 40 years and five months. Toyota's Corolla has been its top seller, accounting for over 39 million units worldwide. And probably a short one, too. As we reported last month, Imperial Coach Builders of Springfield, MO has built what it calls the first 100-percent, all-electric limo out of a customized Nissan Leaf. The local TV news has a quick report on it, but now Imperial has posted a video (watch it below) that gives the curious an idea of what it's like to ride inside of it. The three-minute video has no narration and is pretty much sound-free, which is appropriate given the stretch limo's near-silent powertrain. The company looks to appeal to the green set by saying the stretched EV is a way to cut pollution while being driven around in style. The limo is fairly typical on the inside, with a 2+2 facing sets set-up and a bunch of wood trim that may or may not be real. The South Korean automaker had predicted that 77.6 million new vehicles would be sold worldwide in 2012, but it has lowered that figure to 77.1 million after revising expected European sales figures. Industry-wide, sales in Europe are down 3.2 percent. Hyundai expects sales for the second of the year to be more than one million vehicles less than the first half of the year, which saw 7.65 million units sold. Additionally, Hyundai officials said that sales in China have dropped slightly, in part because some Chinese cities have begun limiting new vehicle registrations to avoid congestion. The next Range Rover, which we've seen plenty of spy shots of, appears set to wade into territory completely new to it: a long-wheelbase version. A set of extra-lengthy rear doors have been spotted on one of the camouflaged prototypes navigating the English midlands, the expectation being that a longer Range Rover is being developed for markets like China that crave stretched models with ample leg room in the back seats. The bigger back end will negate some of that 600-to-800-pound weight loss we've been hearing about for the next big Land Rover, but most Chinese and Middle Eastern buyers won't care. It isn't known if the extended version will come to the States, but a recent report in Automotive News suggests that if it did come, it could fit a third row of seats and become a challenger to the Mercedes GL, which is currently the best-sellling full-sized luxury utility here. Los operadores actuales de NAG (la compañía que tiene la concesión del circuito y todas sus instalaciones anexas, y que están metidos en juicio por malversación de fondos, y suspendidos de sus actividades "oficiales" sobre el papel), confirmaron que Ecclestone se reunió con ellos y con la gente que gobierna Renania-Platinado (el estado donde se sitúa el circuito) para evaluar la situación. Ecclestone se habría ofrecido a hacerse cargo de todo NAG, sin pagar un duro por ello, pero haciéndose cargo de los cientos de millones de euros que arrastra la empresa concesionaria. De esta manera Bernie adquiriría otro circuito más para su colección. Eso sí, el jefe de la FOM asegura que si se queda con la pista no se encargará de gestionar el día a día u organizar a su costa el GP de Fórmula 1 (para eso dejaría a agentes externos). The called Duke's actions "unreasonable and discriminatory" In 2009, after Chrysler's bankruptcy and corporate overhaul, Duke requested a security deposit because it viewed the freshly-minted Chrysler Group LLC, allied with Fiat, as an entirely new customer. Chrysler says it had already set up a prepayment system that "mitigated any risk to Duke" and negated the need for any security deposit, but it caved and paid the sum when Duke threatened to cut off power to the four Kokomo facilities. According to the report, Chrysler has asked for the deposit back, but Duke Energy says it won't return the money until Chrysler makes 12 consecutive payments, maintains a long-term credit rating of "BB" through Standard & Poors, and Duke determines Chrysler's financial status and acceptability of risk. [w/poll] Filed under: Government/Legal Chicago Kafkaesque system for moving vehicles to clear space for municipal work or TV/movie production is not working as advertised. In theory, it's straightforward: the city tows someone's car to an out-of-the-way parking space to make room and enters the new location into a database within 20 minutes of the move. Drivers looking for their cars can call 311 or go online to find out if their car has been relocated. In practice, it's typical big-city municipal Hell. The problem, says the Chicago Tribune, is that the relocation info doesn't always make it into the system in a timely manner. Not only can it take more than 20 minutes, but some residents didn't realize the city had moved their cars until the Tribune called them and told them, weeks later. The city of Chicago says that it posts notices giving residents at least 24 hours warning when possible, but sometimes an emergency means that there's no warning. Some residents report instances of no notice being given even when there should have been. As a result, there are owners who have reported their cars stolen when, in fact, they were merely relocated and never properly recorded by city employees. After filing police reports, canceling insurance, etc., their cars are eventually "found" and the mix-ups are cleared up. Sure, the car owners are happy to get their rides back, but there has to be a better way to handle the matter of vehicle relocation, as the reporting process is, at best, inconsistent. The Tribune says 17,000 cars were moved last year. How many of those were lost in the system is not known. Chicago officials say they plan to provide car owners with additional advance notice via posted signs and an early warning system that details when work is scheduled to occur in the city's neighborhoods. For the moment, however, know that if your car goes missing in The Windy City, it might not be because of bad guys. What's your take on Chicago's policy? Ayer comenzó su actividad productiva con las primeras unidades del Polo, si bien más adelante se sumarán más modelos del grupo, entre ellos de Skoda y casi con seguridad alguno de SEAT. La capacidad anual prevista para esta planta será de 300.000 unidades, si bien hasta llegar a ese ritmo pasará todavía un tiempo. Concebida para cumplir con las normativas medioambientales más exigentes, creará más de 3.700 puestos de trabajo en la zona y además de contar con talleres de chapa, pintura, la habitual unidad de montaje final y un centro de pruebas técnicas, tiene una academia de formación inicial y avanzada para los trabajadores. Contando con el centro enérgetico, ocupa una superficie de 1,3 millones de metros cuadrados. Ya tenemos el Mokka, el Juke, llegará en breve el 500L Trekking, el nuevo SUV de Jeep, y algunos cuantos más... Honda no se quiere perder "la fiesta", y según informa Automotive News, podría estar pensando en un Jazz crossover para incrementar el atractivo de su utilitario MPV cuando llegue su tercera generación. Esta nueva variante del Jazz llegaría a lo largo de 2013, con la actualización del modelo, con idea de meterse en un sub-segmento de los utilitarios "todoterrenizados" que lleva un crecimiento acumulado en 2012 de más del 43%. | Posted: 28 Jul 2012 08:20 AM PDT  Report: Lotus Evora S IPS automatic transmission option arrives in October [w/video] Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Lotus The Lotus Evora S IPS that the company showed drifting all around its test track earlier this year will be available in October, says Car and Driver. The kinder, gentler Lotus is fitted with the six-speed Intelligent Precision Shift transmission, an Aisin unit swiped from the Toyota Camry and retuned with Lotus electronics and actuators. There are two 'regular' modes and two 'sport' modes on the IPS gearbox. The former include a traditional hands-off automatic and an auto mode with shifts handled by wheel-mounted paddles. The latter are a sport automatic setting that sharpens the car's responses and a manual sport mode for total driver control. The Evora S IPS hits showrooms in October.
