Video: Watch this Audi S1 Group B racer tear up the Kyustendil Hillclimb
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Videos, Audi, Racing Bulgarian tuner Prospeed has built a replica of Audi's fabled S1 World Rally Championship mauler out of a garden-variety Audi Coupe, and it's a convincing-looking beast. Helping in its bid for authenticity is genuine Group B horsepower: 800 ponies, to be exact. It won the Bulgarian Hillclimb Championship last year, and it recently ran up an incline at the Kyustendil Hillclimb, part of this year's championship series. The list of modifications made to the donor car are intense, and so is the sound of the final product, singing like a crazed goldfinch as driver Nikolay Zlatkov races to the top of the hill. You can have a watch - and a listen - in the video below.Continue reading Watch this Audi S1 Group B racer tear up the Kyustendil HillclimbWatch this Audi S1 Group B racer tear up the Kyustendil Hillclimb originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 20:00:00 EST. Sweetness: 101-year-old buys Chevy Volt for his wife, 85
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Hybrid, Chevrolet He may not expect to be alive when the lease is up, but the oldest Chevrolet Volt buyer we've ever heard about is still happy he bought the plug-in car. That's because 101-year-old Edward Heine bought the Volt for his wife, Hya, 85. The couple traded in a Jaguar, according to the Carroll County Times, because, "my wife wanted this electric car." She told the paper, "If you're going to live, you should be up to date, and try to be technologically intelligent. We both came to the conclusion that the next car should be environmentally friendly, and that's why we did it." Edward said the lease was the right move because the technology will change so much by the time the lease is up. Also, this: "In two years, I'll trade it in. I don't expect to be alive, but my wife will be." Isn't that sweet? This isn't the first time we've heard of someone buying a Volt he or she doesn't plan on driving. Last year, we learned about a Jane Doe who bought a Volt for a low-income family.Sweetness: 101-year-old buys Chevy Volt for his wife, 85 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 19:36:00 EST. Video: This is what a six-rotor Wankel looks and sounds like
Filed under: Performance, Technology, Videos, Australia Ah, the Wankel. You magnificent, high-reving feat of unorthodox engineering. Your biggest champion, Mazda, may have left you - at least for the moment - but that doesn't mean some mad mechanics can't rally you and a few friends for a high-horsepower party. The folks over at Pulse Performance Race Engineering of New Zealand have constructed an engine made from six, count 'em, six Wankel rotors. The mere fact that this engine starts and runs is a testament to the mechanical know-how of these guys. For comparison's sake, Mazda's own Le Mans-winning 787 prototype utilized a four-rotor Wankel. Another four-rotor was constructed by BMI Racing's "Mad Mike," whose engines are worked on by Pulse Performance. Scroll below to see the video and hear it for yourself. The engine's sound is not what you would expect from a rotary, and if we're being honest we don't find it terribly pleasant to listen to, but it's still an awfully impressive feat of engineering. We're not sure what kind of vehicle this insane powerplant will grace (we're guessing a drag car), but whatever it is, it figures to be one-of-a-kind.Continue reading This is what a six-rotor Wankel looks and sounds likeThis is what a six-rotor Wankel looks and sounds like originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 19:29:00 EST. Report: Elon Musk to remain at Tesla for "several more years," personally inspects Model S
Filed under: Sedan, Plants/Manufacturing, Technology, Tesla, Electric Few automakers' fortunes and CEOs are as intrinsically linked as Tesla Motors and Elon Musk. The boss of the full-electric automaker can influence the stock of his company with something as simple as an outlandish statement - exactly the sort of utterance the mercurial executive is fond of making. In the latest Musk news, it appears he has no plans to change any of that, saying that he will stay with Tesla for "several more years." Investors want him to remain at the company through - and past - the launch of the Model S. To leave now would potentially derail any momentum that the company can muster from the all-electric sedan. Perhaps the investors like the idea of having a lighting rod like Musk around for when questions about cutting production - or when the company will make money - are asked. Part of his duties through the rest of his tenure at Tesla will also reportedly include personally inspecting production examples of the Model S. To find out exactly what that entails, we reached out to the automaker for comment. According to Tesla spokesperson Christina Ra, Musk checks "Everything from functionality, to fit and finish. Anything from door handles to carpet to molding, to driving... The things we are potentially having to work on are not big things - 98-percent of the car is ready to go." Ra would not comment on exactly how many cars he checks at the Fremont, California facility, but tells us, "At a high level, he's looking at everything." We're still not exactly sure what that means, but its always refreshing to see a CEO down in the trenches - even if it might just be a publicity stunt.Elon Musk to remain at Tesla for "several more years," personally inspects Model S originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 18:59:00 EST. Report: Toyota sales rebound to reclaim spot as world's largest automaker
Filed under: Car Buying, Europe, Japan, ToyotaToyota has pushed ahead of General Motors and Volkswagen as the world's largest automaker in the first half of 2012. According to a new Bloomberg report, the 4.9 million units sold by the Japanese automaker in the first six months of 2012 represents an impressive 34-percent jump. Toyota's sales beat out GM by 300,000 units and VW by 520,000. Still, The General's sales were up 2.9 percent to 4.67 million vehicles sold, while Volkswagen moved 4.45 units, an 8.9 percent increase. While Toyota has enjoyed success in its top markets, North America and Japan, GM and VW have struggled with the economic crisis in Europe. The Japanese automaker was able to accomplish this even in the wake of the disastrous tsunami in its home market and flooding that occurred in Thailand. According to IHS Automotive market analyst Rebecca Lindland, the strong start may be followed by a downturn in momentum: "they are still restocking dealerships, pulling in consumers who may have waited... but that positive impact will trail off as the year progresses." Toyota previously took the top spot as the largest global automaker from GM back in 2008 amidst the American financial crisis, but General Motors reclaimed that title in the wake of Japan's natural disasters.Toyota sales rebound to reclaim spot as world's largest automaker originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 18:31:00 EST. Spy Shots: Kia engineers lock themselves out of Quoris prototype... in the desert
Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Kia, Luxury Locking your keys in your car is never a fun experience. You have to call the auto club or tow service, wait for them to either bring you a new key or break into your car for you. It's something that happens to everyone at least once, and then you (try to) remember never to do it again. A team of Kia engineers putting a Quoris luxury sedan prototype through its paces in the desert have just performed the lockout test - unintentionally. As you can see from these photos from the spy shooters at KGP Photography, once locked out of the car, the entire team went to work, trying to get back into the sedan by the most high-tech means possible: screwdriver, pry bar and wire hook. According to our intrepid spy photographers, the engineers toiled with the locks of the future Korean flagship for some time before getting the car opened - and not without a bit of embarrassment. If only the Quoris had some sort of telematics system like OnStar from General Motors or Blue Link from sister marque Hyundai, they could have just called in and had the doors unlocked remotely. Perhaps it'll be an option?Kia engineers lock themselves out of Quoris prototype... in the desert originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 17:46:00 EST. Gallery: ABT AS7 (Audi S7) Share TweetABT AS7: 520 CV para el Audi S7 originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 17:05:00 EST. Official: Team O'Neil offering two-day women's only rally class [w/video]
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Off-Road, RacingTeam O'Neil has something special lined up for next month. The home of perfecting the art of rally driving on the East Coast will offer a special women's two-day school August 18-19. The class will feature all of the standard classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training with the school's regular instructors, as well as input from a couple of special guests who know more than a little bit about competing as a woman. Verena Mei, a former Formula D and Redline Time Attack driver and Christy Carlson, a National SCCA Solo champion, will both be on hand to instruct, encourage and answer any questions. Carlson first crossed paths with Team O'Neil back in 2008, when she won a three-day course from the school while competing in SCCA. When she's not working on her dissertation in a quest to complete her PhD in Meteorology and Climatology, she's been busy in the SCCA rally world. She's also the first and only woman to walk away with a trophy at the SCCA Rallycross National Championships and was the quickest female at both Sno*Drift and the 100 Acre Woods events this year. "There are lots of women who would love to take the course just as it is," Carlson said, "but with a women's only course, it gives women the opportunity to not feel like they have to compete." The school will cover basics like left foot braking, using the throttle to steer the vehicle, accident avoidance, types of skids and the basics of weight transfer and pendulum turns. "Both myself and Verena Mei will be there to help sit with the drivers and provide additional insight on techniques as female competitors." The whole package will cost $1,897, and will include vehicles, safety equipment and lunch on Saturday. Head over to Team O'Neil site for more information. Watch Carlson lay waste to the 100 Acre Wood in her 2002 Subaru WRX by scrolling below. While Team O'Neil is technically the first rally school in the country to offer an exclusively female curriculum, word has it other rally schools are set to do the same. Both Rally Ready in Austin, Texas and DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie, Washington are reportedly working on similar programs. Stay tuned.Continue reading Team O'Neil offering two-day women's only rally class [w/video]Team O'Neil offering two-day women's only rally class [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 16:57:00 EST. Report: Kia misses profit estimates, blames marketing costs, strikes
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Kia, Earnings/Financials, South KoreaBloomberg reports Kia has missed analyst profit estimates for the second quarter after net income slipped to $965 million at current conversion rates. On average, analysts estimated the South Korean automaker would bring in somewhere around $1.1 billion, though Kia did see its revenue increase by 8.4 percent. The automaker said its less-than-estimated profit results came down to increased spending as the company strove to market its new Pride subcompact and K9 luxury sedan (a model that will be known as Quoris in other markets). Kia also saw its operating profit increase by 18 percent, falling just shy of industry estimates. But additional marketing wasn't solely to blame for the missed goals. The report also indicates recent strikes by workers vying for better pay and reduced hours may have had an impact on the bottom line as well. All told, Kia estimates the company lost production of 5,450 units worth somewhere around $82.5 million during strikes held on July 13 and 20. The news isn't all dark and stormy, however. Kia sales in China blossomed by around 18 percent, and Europe saw an even bigger increase of around 25 percent thanks largely to the introduction of the Pride. Europe saw its industry-wide sales slacken by 3.2 percent by comparison.Kia misses profit estimates, blames marketing costs, strikes originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 16:29:00 EST. Discovery takes a look at the Mitsubishi i
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Mitsubishi, North America It ain't Yosemite or shark attacks, but we'll take it. The Discovery Channel has turned its attention to the evolution of the Mitsubishi i electric vehicle. The channel will run an episode titled 'Birth of a Mitsubishi i-MiEV' on August 4. The show, which is promo'd in the awful short video below (just 15 seconds), will run in Canada, though no word on if or when it will run in the U.S., according to Green Car Reports. So far, the jellybean-shaped car has been more of a novelty than a game-changer in the U.S. Through the first six months of the year, Mitsubishi sold 333 i EVs, though last month's 33 units marked the first time month-over-month sales declined in 2012. The i was rated by the EPA to go 62 miles on a single charge, 12 fewer than the Nissan Leaf. Mitsubishi debuted the car as the i-MiEV in Japan in 2009.Continue reading Discovery takes a look at the Mitsubishi iDiscovery takes a look at the Mitsubishi i originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 16:05:00 EST. Report: Mazda piggybacks on Ford Escape recall with 215,000 Tribute models of its own
Filed under: Recalls, Safety, Crossover, Ford, Mazda A day after Ford issued a recall of 485,000 Escape crossovers from its 2001-2004 model years, Mazda has reportedly issued its own for the 215,000 examples of its Tribute, the Escape's mechanical twin. While it's the same engine configuration being recalled, the 3.0-liter V6 with cruise control, there is a difference in the recalls: Mazda is recalling 2002-2006 and 2008 model year Tributes, three more years of production than the Escape (the Tribute wasn't made in 2007). The problem is a lack of clearance between the engine cover and the cruise control cable, which can prevent the driver from letting off the throttle if the cruise control is on. The situation was caused by a repair for a different recall in 2005. Mazda says the engine cover is similar enough to warrant inclusion for all years of production it has cited. It isn't known yet if Ford will expand its own recall.Mazda piggybacks on Ford Escape recall with 215,000 Tribute models of its own originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 16:01:00 EST.
Report: Toyota readying Intellitouch touchpad controllers?
Filed under: Technology, Toyota "Intellitouch" is the name Toyota will apparently use to refer to a new electronic control scheme it is developing. That's according to Car and Driver, which has spotted the name in a new Toyota trademark application. According to the submission, the name refers to "electronic touch sensitive controllers, sold as an integral part of motor vehicles." C/D speculates that for Toyota to bother developing a brand name, there must be more to the new gadgets than just touchscreen navigation. In fact, the magazine thinks Toyota is gearing up for Intellitouch to compete with Cadillac's Cue and Ford's MyFordTouch and their capacitive touch switchgear. The control setup could also be similar to the gesture-based touchpad systems already offered by Audi and shortly, by BMW. Another Toyota trademark filing is for "EBIN," a wireless charging system for personal electronics. While inductive chargers have been around for a while, several automakers are rushing to include them in upcoming models. General Motors recently trademarked the name, "Dockspot" for its version.Toyota readying Intellitouch touchpad controllers? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 15:30:00 EST.
Video: Watch this Subaru lug a Ram pickup and a trailer out of the mud
Filed under: Truck, Videos, Hatchback, Subaru, Humor, Off-Road, Ram Well this should make a Ram fan or two blush. A Ram four-door pulling a trailer was saved from the clutches of a muddy rut by none other than a second-generation Subaru WRX. That's the power of all-wheel drive for ya! It's unclear where the video was taken, but amidst many other trucks (all appear to be pulling camper trailers as well), it was the humble Subie that came to the rescue. Using your standard canvas tow strap, the Fuji Heavy hardware barely appears to struggle, though the Ram does its part, too. We don't get much of a reaction from the driver of the compact hatchback, but we can infer: "AWD, FTW!" One can argue the merits of the Subaru's footing in contrast to that of the mighty full-size pickup, but there's no denying the video evidence below. As Autoblog scribe Zach Bowman sagely remarked upon watching the footage, "That video is why I hate buying used cars." Touché.Continue reading Watch this Subaru lug a Ram pickup and a trailer out of the mudWatch this Subaru lug a Ram pickup and a trailer out of the mud originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 14:58:00 EST. The website's sources have learned that Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has yet to sign off on a next-generation car, which suggests the future model hasn't even begun development. And those same sources say they're not sure Ghosn will ever give the green light. We're only speculating, but perhaps the problem - if there really is a problem and this isn't Ghosn machinating - has to do with this tidbit taken from the IL story: "Ghosn approved the original GT-R only after being assured that it would make money for the company even at low volumes." We wouldn't be suprised if the shade under 6,000 sales in four years is quite a bit lower than the "low volumes" predicted in Nissan's original cost/benefit calculus. At launch, the 480-horsepower GT-R MSRP was $69,850, or $71,900 if you wanted the Premium model. Peanuts are cheaper, which is probably why the GT-R has cost substantially more every single year: after its first year, the price jumped to $76,840 for the base model and $79,090 for the Premium; the next year brought a price bump to $80,790 or $83,040 for the Premium; the following year, the base model disappeared and the Premium rose by a premium of $1,020 to $84,060; in 2012 the price took another leap to $90,950; and for 2013, it was another gulp-worthy price boost to $96,820. Yes, the 2013 iteration has 55 more horsepower than the original model and a 2.7-second 0-to-60 time, and yes, you'd look a long time for a sub-$100K car to match its performance, but at that price, the GT-R is mixing with the kinds of sexy metal that can bring attributes to the table that the GT-R can't match. But of course, along with not knowing if Ghosn will approve a followup to the current car, we don't know why he hasn't done it already - maybe he's changed his mind about that Infiniti GT-R after all, or maybe he hopes you'll be satisfied with the Juke-R. If this car is a "one-hit wonder," though, it was certainly a wonder, if perhaps not enough of a sales hit.Nissan GT-R future in doubt? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 14:27:00 EST.
