Pero como viene siendo habitual, Internet se adelantó a la fiesta con una serie de filtraciones que se cargaron la intriga. Y con la sorpresa ya "chafada", hace tres horas que Lexus ha decidido publicar la primera instantánea completa de su sedán, con un tres cuartos frontal. Tal y como vimos ayer, el nuevo "berlinón" (permíteme llamarlo así) de la división de lujo de Toyota mezcla la estética del nuevo GS de la marca con la trasera del LS ya conocido. ¿Te gusta lo que ves? | Posted: 27 Jul 2012 12:38 AM PDT  El vídeo del 8:23 en el 'Ring del MINI JCW GP no es lo que esperas Filed under: MINI, Utilitarios Normalmente, cuando un fabricante alardea de un crono en el Nordschleife de Nürburgring viene seguido al poco tiempo de un vídeo onboard para que puedas comprobar cómo el tiempo anunciado es una afirmación real. MINI comunicó ya hace meses que su nuevo JCW GP había conseguido un buen 8:23 en el exigente trazado alemán, lo que le dejaba en muy buen lugar si tenemos en cuenta la potencia y limitaciones del coche. Esta mañana nos encontrábamos el vídeo de dicho crono, y nos calentábamos para verlo, hasta comprobar que, efectivamente, no estábamos ante una filmación convencional de una vuelta, sino una promo del coche, donde se ha acortado todo a un minuto y pico, con fines publicitarios. Jay Leno, who owns more cars than you will ever drive in your lifetime, was graced with the presence of a Fiat 500 Abarth at his garage. Now, this was not the first time that Fiat has stopped off with the potent Italian runabout. Fiat dropped in on Leno with an Abarth back in December of last year, but this time he was able to take it out on the road and put the performance-minded 500 through its paces. And that he did. Leno owns the very second 500 to be sold in America, and raised the question: Is the Abarth good enough for an upgrade? We certainly think so, but Jay took to the Los Angeles streets to find out. Along the way, he mused about how the Abarth would stack up against the Ferrari Dino and the future of the performance automobile. Driving $2 million prototypes on public roads is risky, so rather than increase the count of gray hair on their heads, Volkswagen's public relations team invited us up to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to spend some time in its all-electric E-Bugster Concept. But don't think the German automaker handed us the keys and set us free on the famed racing circuit - our drive was on the near-empty perimeter roads and our top speed was limited to less than 20 mph. Tooling along at an insect's pace (pun intended) was hardly electrifying. But as it turned out, driving impressions weren't our primary objective. Not only did Volkswagen want to showcase its electric technology, but they also wanted to give us a sneak peek of the next-generation Beetle Convertible and gauge consumer interest in a potential Beetle Speedster model. You know, the one who filmed himself doing at least 186 mph through busy traffic in Vancouver, Canada? As it turns out, it didn't take long for police do identify the idiotic rider. Public tips quickly pointed law enforcement toward 25-year-old Randy George Scott, who quickly found himself with a warrant out for his arrest. Scott turned himself in to police at Kelowna, around six hours from the town where the incident reportedly took place, and he's been arrested on charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The crime can carry a penalty of up to five years in jail, according to CNN. The video shows a rider dangerously weaving through traffic as the speedometer pegs out at 299 kph, or 186 mph, outside the town of Saanich. Police say the rider may have been traveling significantly faster than that, however, as the motorcycle can be heard accelerating even after the speedometer tops out. Chris Harris is one of those guys who can't ride, but admits to being fascinated by motorcycles. So to that end, he brought his pal Ben Cope from visordown.com to Santa Pod drag strip with a Ducati 1199 Panigale to face it off against a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Some numbers to ponder. The Porsche has six cylinders, 620 horsepower, and a traditional manual transmission. The Ducati packs just two cylinders, but doesn't give up any enthusiasm to the Porsche, with an astounding 192 hp from its V-Twin. You might think the bike would spank the Porsche, but consider this: both vehicles proved tricky to launch. So, which extreme machine is quicker? If GM does decide to drop Penn State, it would follow on the heels of State Farm. The insurance company has announced that it is pulling TV advertisements during Penn State's home football games, according to the report. Penn State will also lose some $13 million in football bowl revenue that it would have been paid by the Big Ten conference. This means that automotive paint suppliers don't usually have much to talk about, outside of the annual silver-is-the-most-popular-car-color press releases that get picked up by every media outlet on Earth. This one, however, is a bit different.BASF Automotive Coatings releases an annual automotive color trend report, one that tries to predict what colors will be the most popular, some five years from now. This year's verdict is heavy on so-called "natural" colors like browns, greens and blues. These earth tones will be joined by "berry" and copper shades in the automotive color palette of the future, according to BASF. If you're thinking this sounds like a return to the Porsche color scheme of the 1970's, you're on the right track. Further reinforcing the notion that the next wave of cars might more resemble those of the Me Generation is this point: BASF says that China's importance in the global auto market is influencing it to develop "various shades of gold." Yesterday was one of those times and, accordingly, it sent out its latest shareholder letter and conducted a conference call, with CEO Elon Musk, CFO Deepak Ahuja, and George Blankenship (vice president, sales and ownership experience) fielding questions from financial analysts for over an hour. We listened in and, as well as getting an idea about the company's financial health, heard a few tidbits worthy of passing along. First, before we get to the good stuff, some quick numbers. Tesla posted a $105.6 million loss after receiving revenue of $27 million from sales of 10 Model S sedans, 89 Roadsters and 100 Toyota Rav4 EV drivetrains. The hybrid supercar will be fitted with a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four capable of, apparently, 500 horsepower. According to Autocar, the diminutive engnine is able to acheive this output through twin-charging, or the employment of both a supercharger and turbocharger. They are able to boost power at varying RPMs, thus making for a wide powerband. Oh, and speaking of revs, the engine is said to redline at a towering 10,000 RPMs. Jaguar engineers estimate that the eco-friendly performance machine will achieve a top speed of 200 miles per hour, and 0-60 time of below three seconds. That should put it in the same neighborhood of the forthcoming McLaren P11 and Porsche 918 hybrid-supercars. Jaguar is developing the C-X75 with Williams, and intend on producing only 200 examples. The first of which is said to roll out in 2014. The supercar never runs on gas alone, as the mid-mounted four-pot constantly charges up the 600-volt battery pack. The battery sends power to a pair of electric motors that allow the vehicle to run in full EV mode at speeds of up to 40 mph. Until then, it's just seats on wheels. The Mini John Cooper Works GP edition has, however, earned its car stripes: just 2,000 of the fancy Minis are headed for production, and one of them has lapped the 'Ring in 8:23.According to Wikipedia, that puts it one second ahead of the Cosworth Type 25 STI Spec C, and even further forward of the Lotus Exige S, Jaguar XKR and Audi RS4. The other side is just as noteworthy, with the Mini JCW GP making a close inspection of the tailpipes on the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32, Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG, BMW M3 E46, BMW M Coupe and Chevrolet Cobalt SS, all of which scored the very popular time of 8:22. The caveat here is that none of of those other cars, before or after, was tested after 2010, most of them having been run in the early years of this millennium or the end of the last. Not that the clock cares - 8:23 is still 8:23. He'll never use the word "fracking," but thanks to that new drilling technique, the U.S. Secretary of Energy now admits he's changed his mind about hydrogen fuel cells. That's because the abundance of natural gas now being retrieved from shale also provides an enormous source of hydrogen that, when coupled with new reforming technology, produces energy with a low carbon footprint. When Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize winning physicist, was named Secretary of the Department of Energy in the Obama Administration, he quickly redirected much of the Department's automotive research efforts into battery electric vehicles. So much so that proponents of hydrogen fuel cells complained loudly that the Secretary was starving their research efforts. Automakers will no doubt welcome the Secretary's change of heart. General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Daimler, BMW and Hyundai, not only have decades-long development efforts in this area, they claim they can have fuel cell cars showroom ready by 2015. This is not to say Secretary Chu is giving up on battery development. He's not. Indeed, he expects big strides in battery development in the next decade. But it seems possible the Administration is looking to fuel cells as a "Plan B" in case BEV sales don't meet expectations. That would be an astute move. This latest recall affects 485,000 2001-2004 Escapes with the 3.0-liter V6 engine and cruise control. These vehicles could experience unintended acceleration caused by their cruise control cable interfering with the throttle cable when the cruise is engaged. The potential interference between the two cables was not present when these vehicles left the factory, but rather was introduced later by repair procedures for another recall.Ford originally recalled these Escapes in December 2004 to address an accelerator cable assembly defect. After discovering that its repair procedure could cause new problems, the automaker updated the repair procedure in October 2005. By that time, however, The Detroit News reports that 320,000 Escapes had already been fixed using the old procedure and their owners were never notified of the potential damage that was caused. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reports of 99 incidents alleging unintended acceleration in 2001-2004 Ford Escapes, as well as its mechanical twin at the time, the Mazda Tribute. Of those, 13 crashes and nine injuries were reported. In January, a 17-year-old died in Arizona while driving a 2002 Ford Escape that had been repaired before the updated repair procedure was available. Details are sparse, but the Nikkei is reporting that Toyota is going to start a car-sharing service in Japan. Actually, the program is an expansion of a small pilot program that already exists, and the Nikkei says the full launch could see around 1,200 vehicles becoming available across Japan. Toyota would likely develop a new brand for the service, just as Daimler did with Car2go. Currently, the Nikkei says, around 7,000 car-sharing vehicles are in service in Japan. Toyota has previously said that it sees car-sharing as a place to send electric vehicles (as opposed to actually selling them to customers). That was what Bill Reinert said back in 2010 and remains the case for the upcoming all-electric Scion iQ EV.
