Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition visits the Mullin Museum
Filed under: Performance, Bugatti The last time we visited the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, CA, it was to see the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, which was the world's most expensive car at the time with an estimated purchase price of $30-$40 million. Nearly two years later we found ourselves back in the museum, this time to view the world's fastest car - the 2011 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition.Bugatti will build 300 of the Veyron 16.4 supercars by the time they are finished with production. Of those, 46 will be of the Super Sport variant boasting an incredible 1,200 horsepower, and of those just five will be World Record Editions that celebrate the car's record-breaking 268-mph top-speed run. The car you see here is one of those select few and is on loan to the museum for a short period of time. It features the same two-tone paint scheme featured on the car used to set the top speed at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessian high-speed oval. The Veyron 16.4 Super Sport WRE is one of many modern Bugattis currently on display in the museum, joining a Veyron 16.4 Super Sport prototype and show cars from the late 1990s including the 18.3 Chiron Concept, EB118 Concept and EB218 Concept. Chip Yates sets electric airplane speed record, lives to tell tale [w/video]

And lucky.Chip Yates has, in a few short months, converted a Burt Rutan-designed Long-EZ airplane to battery power and, at the same time, undergone all the flight training necessary to get his pilot's license. On Wednesday, he took his renamed Long-ESA (Electric Speed & Altitude) on its maiden voyage. On Thursday, he took to the skies above Inyokern Airport for the second time and set an unofficial speed record of 202.6 miles per hour. It might have been his last flight. Ever. To save time, Yates installed the same battery pack that have been in his record-setting electric motorcycle last year. During its last bit of heavy usage on the Bonneville Salt Flats, it had begun to shows signs of significant voltage sag under throttle. In fact, it couldn't put out anywhere near the 250 horsepower the UQM motor could have handled. Still, compact, with just under 12-kWh worth of energy storage, it fit nicely into the plane and it seemed robust enough for some early test flights. Emphasis on "seemed." Official: 2013 Audi RS5 officially priced from $68,900*
Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Performance, Audi The highly anticipated Audi RS5 is finally on sale in the United States, and Audi has revealed that the high-performance sport coupe will be priced from $68,900, (*)not including $895 for destination. Under the hood is Audi's tried and true, high-revving 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, good for 444 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque here, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The RS5 also employs a sport rear differential that works with the Quattro all-wheel-drive system to better optimize the four-corner grip to offer rear-drive-like performance when needed. Audi states that the RS5 will sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. Don't get us wrong, we adore the free-breathing 4.2-liter mill, but it strikes us as odd that Audi wouldn't employ its new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 here. Under the hood of the A8, S6 and S7, this engine makes 420 hp and 406 lb-ft, and allows those bigger vehicles to run to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. Moreover, Audi offers the S8 with a boosted, 520-hp version of this engine, able to shoot the flagship to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. General Motors' Opel division is offering its Insignia with an engine that can run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as well as petrol, Green Car Congress reports. The engine, which is available in all three of the Insignia's body styles, is a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-banger that delivers about 140 horsepower and uses 7.6 liters of gas per 100 kilometers, or about 31 miles per gallon, on the slightly more lenient European driving standards. More importantly, with both the gas tank and LPG tank filled, the car has a leg-cramp-inducing range of 1,056 miles, which will get you from the French to Hungarian capital cities with about 100 miles to spare. Su dueño, el arquitecto Hans Scheidecker, recibió su coche personalmente de las manos de su compatriota Stephan Winkelmann, CEO de Lamborghini. El arquitecto bávaro es un fan de Lamborghini y ya posee un Diablo en su garaje. Además de una muestra de buena salud para la marca, es la prueba flagrante de los progresos en productividad que ha realizado el fabricante italiano. El Aventador nº 1000 llega un año y tres meses después de su lanzamiento, mientras que el Murciélago nº1000 salió de fábrica en febrero de 2004 tras su debut en el salón de Fráncfort de 2001. La producción total del Murciélago alcanzó las 4.099 unidades a lo largo de sus nueve años de existencia. La producción del Aventador pasó de 3 coches al día durante el tercer trimestre de 2011 a 4,5 unidades diarias en la actualidad. Con el estado actual de los pedidos, la producción está asegurada para los próximos 18 meses. Pero no es nada en comparación con las cifras de producción del Gallardo. Confirmed: BMW to introduce "On Demand" service in U.S.

The first location, BMW of Manhattan, is considered a pilot, and will have about 100 328i sedans in the fleet. According to Ed Robinson, president of BMW Financial, the makeup of the fleet will change over time. But the all-328i lineup to start reflects the newest product from BMW and the one the company wants to push right now. Other logical cities to follow will be Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Miami. But the service could easily spread to smaller cities with smaller fleets. Pricing for checking a 328i out like a library book will be announced in August. The website to go to is www.bmwondemandusa.com. The business model for the program has multiple layers. It gives dealers in urban centers a fleet of cars from which to provide extended test drives. It also gives luxury car owners a readily available pool of premium cars to rent that you can't get from Hertz or Avis. And it is part of a longer-term trend BMW sees of an increasing number of urban dwellers not wanting to own cars at all. "We have seen the research that shows as cities become more dense, the desire for car ownership goes down, but the desire to drive cars to get out of town stays constant," says Robinson. In time, the On Demand fleet will be expanded to include other BMWs like the new 7 Series coming later this year, X5 and X3, and possibly specialty vehicles like the M3 and M5. Robinson said that with specialty vehicles, though, drivers would probably go through an extra layer of qualification. "BMW On Demand USA goes beyond any existing premium-rental or car-sharing programs in this market," said Robinson. Indeed, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, nor Audi have any similar service that is scaled like this. Rumormill: MG Roadster may return as convertible crossover

Auto Express is reporting out of the United Kingdom that MG will bring back the MG Roadster based on the MG Icon concept first shown in China last year. That four-passenger hard top SUV was tall in drive height and short on details when it was shown, though it was supposed to pay homage to the MGA and MGB GT. The Roadster, along with the hard top model, will likely arrive in 2015, Auto Express reports. Like the hard top, the convertible would offer a modern interpretation of the MGB with key styling cues such as the long hood, octagon emblem and distinctive styling. Y si el coche se vende bien, ellos venderán muchos accesorios. Nadie duda de que en la próxima edición, la estrella será el duo Subaru BRZ/ Scion FR-S (Toyota GT86, para nosotros). El famoso Stillen lo tiene tan claro que ha organizado un concurso para que sea el público quien diseñe su kit carrocería para el "Tobaru". El preparador se encarga de los kits de admisión forzada, amortiguadores y muelles deportivos, así como de los frenos de alto rendimiento, mientras que el público de la estética. El ganador se verá recompensado con un viaje de tres días a Las Vegas y al SEMA para ver su creación en vivo. Lo bueno de este concurso es que desde su web se pueden bajar los renders para hacer tu propuesta, pero sobre todo, Stillen valorará más las ideas que la calidad de ejecución. Report: Hyundai working on "Fluidic Precision" design for next Sonata

"You'll see even more maturity with the new Santa Fe, and future cars will feature something we're internally calling Fluidic Precision, where the forms might be a little less extroverted," Krafcik said. "You'll see that with the next Sonata, the design of which has just been frozen." Krafcik also confirmed that Hyundai will introduce an all-wheel-drive version of the Genesis sedan in its next iteration, which will likely be shown as a concept vehicle later this year. Furthermore, Hyundai is considering upgrading the Genesis coupe to take on the likes of the the BMW 3 Series. And while most automakers decline to discuss future products, Krafcik pulled the Hyundai's curtain back just a little. Hace pocos días el presidente de la república virtió duras críticas en contra del "comportamiento de los accionistas" de Peugeot. Arnaud de Montebourg, el ministro francés de la "recuperación productiva" (sí, esa es su cartera ministerial...) llegó a hablar de "mentiras" y "disimulaciones" al afirmar que la familia Peugeot habría cobrado 78 millones de euros en dividendos en 2011 mientras se preparaba el plan de reestructuración. Más allá de una cierta demagogia del gobierno, Thierry Peugeot, presidente del consejo de vigilancia de PSA Peugeot Citroën, se defiende argumentando que son el segundo fabricante europeo, los primeros en la tecnología híbrida con motores diésel y recuerda que el grupo emplea a 100.000 personas en Francia y otro tanto al extranjero. Al mismo tiempo reconoce que son demasiado dependientes del mercado europeo, el cual ha caído un 25% en 5 años. También explica, como argumento a favor, que en Francia tienen 16 fábricas de las cuales 6 son de automóviles... Claramente el grupo tiene un problema de sobrecapacidad, sus fábricas funcionan al ralentí. El plan de reestructuración no afectaría, en principio, a las plantas españolas de Vigo y Villaverde. Rimac_One electric supercar coming to UK in September

The Rimac Concept_One super-duper electric car will be shown off at London's Salon Privé in September, Hybrid Cars reports, giving us another chance to show off pictures of this electric beauty. The exhibit will be the second ever for Croatia's Rimac, which unveiled the EV at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September. Since then, more details have been disclosed about the car, which will have a production run of less than 90 vehicles and a $1 million pricetag. The Concept_One will have a 92-kilowatthour battery and a powertrain that delivers almost 1,100 horsepower, giving the car a 0-60 mile-per-hour acceleration time of 2.8 seconds and a 190-mile-per-hour top speed.
