Posted: 17 Jul 2012 06:45 PM PDT ![]() Bloomberg says buyers, not automakers, should get more federal funding for plug-in vehicles Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy, USA The U.S. government would be more effective at spurring plug-in vehicle sales if it provided more financial incentives to consumers instead of automakers. At least, that's the opinion in a Bloomberg News editorial. Saying that finding alternatives to gasoline "a worthy public goal," Bloomberg says the government should expand purchasing incentives beyond the $7,500 it provides for buyers of some plug-ins and hybrids. President Obama has said he wants 1 million plug-in vehicles to be on U.S. roads by 2015; the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards he proposed last year would mandate about a 70 percent fuel economy improvement by 2025. Bloomberg figures the government should hand out money to buyers, not companies, to encourage sales: Providing loans to companies that can get their own financing in the capital markets is a questionable way to reach [the goal]. A better use of government money would be to encourage consumer demand - by continuing, and expanding, tax credits or other incentives for people who buy vehicles that use little or no gas. During the past three years, U.S. Treasury Department's Federal Financing Bank has made more than $8 billion in loans at about a 1 percent interest rate to established automakers such as Ford and Nissan as well as advanced powertrain specialists like Fisker and Tesla, strictly for the purpose of developing electric-drive vehicles. Bloomberg called such a strategy "questionable." Such automaker loans are guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Energy.Bloomberg says buyers, not automakers, should get more federal funding for plug-in vehicles originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 20:05:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jul 2012 06:45 PM PDT ![]() Video: Autonomous driving and race car driver brains get the Ted Talks treatment Filed under: Etc., Technology, Videos Like it or not, autonomous vehicles are coming. Between Google's various efforts and the constant evolution of automaker prototypes, it's only a matter of time before computers take the wheel. Don't get us wrong, either. That's not entirely a bad thing. While U.S. traffic fatalities have fallen to their lowest number since 1949, the reality is 32,310 Americans lost their lives in traffic incidents last year alone. That number marks a decline of around 26 percent since 2005, and analysts believe much of that fall is due to drivers traveling fewer and fewer miles. So, what if people weren't forced to drive at all? What if a computer, which can't be distracted, never grows tired and is always at peak performance, took over the mundane task of dragging warm bodies to work every morning or off to vacation every summer? Where would our traffic fatalities be then? In the latest TEDTalks video, Chris Gerdes speaks about how he's been part of a team that's seen Audi tackle Pikes Peak and build autonomous drift cars. But researchers have found something interesting by studying real race car drivers in the cockpit. Namely, human drivers continue to be better at instinctual manipulation of a vehicle than their autonomous counterparts. Pretty cool. Check the video out below.Continue reading Autonomous driving and race car driver brains get the Ted Talks treatmentAutonomous driving and race car driver brains get the Ted Talks treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 19:59:00 EST. The coupe was penned by none other than Robert Kirkman, the creator of the now-famous The Walking Dead series and features a spike-laden cow-catcher plow up front. Aggressive spiked-tires, armored windows and plenty of lighting also help set this Elantra Coupe apart from the more pedestrian production models. Hyundai partnered up with Kirkman to celebrate the 100th issue of The Walking Dead comic, and the duo turned to Design Craft for the actual fabrication. That's neat and all, but the Korean automaker went the extra mile for Comic-Con goers. Posted: 17 Jul 2012 05:58 PM PDT ![]() 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE images released, upcoming nav teased Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Performance, ChevroletYou would be forgiven for having forgotten about the new 1LE package for the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS. Announced back in March, this performance upgrade package was quickly overshadowed by the arrival in dealerships of the 580-horsepower Camaro ZL1. While the Camaro lineup's big dog may be all that anyone's been talking about, not everyone can afford to step up to the Shelby-slayer. So, just like Ford found room for the Boss 302 between the Mustang GT and GT500, so too has Chevy made space for the 1LE between the SS and ZL1. Chevy has finally released official images of the 2013 Camaro SS with the 1LE package, and the good news is that this isn't your average SS. A matte black hood, front splitter and rear spoiler are the most obvious tells that you're not looking at a normal Camaro, though the car's black-finished 10-spoke wheels come straight from the ZL1. The 1LE borrows other things from the ZL1, including some suspension hardware, much of its fuel system, its flat-bottom steering wheel and a short-throw shifter, the latter of which is mated to a 1LE-exclusive Tremec TR6060-MM6 six-speed manual transmission designed for the particular abuses of road racing. The car also receives larger front and rear stabilizer bars than the standard SS, higher-capacity rear-axle half shafts, mono tube rear dampers and a strut tower brace. Nope, there are no engine upgrades, so you'll have to make do with the same 426-hp 6.2L LS3 V8 in the SS. That makes the 1LE less powerful (and significantly heavier) than the 444-hp Boss 302 against which it will inevitably be compared, but it's also less expensive. Final pricing isn't available, but Chevy says it will land under $40 large (the Boss 302 starts at $42,200). Also of note is the new seven-inch touchscreen that will be standard equipment atop the center stack of all 2013 Camaros. The new screen will control the car's entire suite of audio options, including MyLink hookups with apps like Pandora and Stitcher. Later in the year, buyers will also be able to pair the screen with the first available GPS navigation system for the Camaro.Continue reading 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE images released, upcoming nav teased2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE images released, upcoming nav teased originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 16:27:00 EST. Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, China, Europe, Japan, Nissan, Scion, Subaru, Toyota, Rumormill, Shanghai Motor Show With the BRZ/FR-S selling like mad, it's no surprise other carmakers are looking jealously at the sales numbers. If rumors are to be believed, Nissan is no exception.Motor Trend says it's been told Nissan is working on its own sports coupe to compete with Toyota and Subaru. It's not the first time we've heard such plans, though. Back in 2008, Nissan was reportedly working on a 240SX successor but as the economy started running out of gas, so did that project. Nissan did, however, show off the Compact Sport Concept at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show pictured above. Looking very much Juke-like but a bit shorter, and, well, compact. Coincidentally, rumors say the new plan is to use the Juke platform. Inside the company the project is being called the "Mini-Z," despite the fact it would almost certainly be front-wheel or all-wheel drive. That would help differentiate it from the BRZ/FR-S, but would certainly turn off those of us with sportier intentions. Nissan's 190-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbo was underhood in the concept, and if used in the production car, would have fewer horses but a wider torque band than its competitors from Toyota and Subaru.Motor Trend says the U.S. probably wouldn't be the initial target market, but instead China, Japan and Europe would be first with American buyers still in consideration. The mag's source says the Mini-Z should be close in size to Honda's CR-Z and should start production sometime late next year. Check out Nissan's press release on the Compact Sport Concept below.Continue reading Nissan working on Juke-based BRZ/FR-S rival?Nissan working on Juke-based BRZ/FR-S rival? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 18:55:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:40 PM PDT ![]() Confirmed: 2014 VW Jetta to drop five-cylinder in favor of turbo four Filed under: Car Buying, Sedan, Technology, Volkswagen, Rumormill Rainer Michel, Vice President of Product Marketing & Strategy at Volkswagen of America, stopped by the AOL offices today for a chat about what VW has on tap for the 2013 model year. While much of what he had to say was either minor reshuffling of features or stuff we already knew - like the 45-mpg, hybrid version of the Jetta launching late this year - there were a few interesting tidbits. First was the addition of a launch control feature to the 2013 Jetta GLI. Standard on GLI models with the DSG transmission, it allows for "a perfect launch with controlled wheelspin," according to VW's press release. While we're all about wheelspin, controlled or otherwise, Michel's real news wasn't about the 2013 Jetta, but the promise of an overhaul to the 2014 Jetta powertrain, steering and suspension. VW will be dropping the 2.5-liter five-cylinder in favor of a 1.8-liter turbocharged, direct injected four, as was rumored. This is the same 1.8 TSI engine with 158 horsepower and 185 pound feet of torque found in the European Passat and CC. For those who are wondering whether it has any relationship to the 1.8T engine found in the VW GTI a few years back, the answer is a definitive "no." The new Jetta base engine will be built at VW's Mexican engine facility in Silao, with the switch to the turbo four made as much for the expected improvement in fuel economy as it was for production efficiency, as the naturally aspirated five-cylinder is not long for this world. While VW didn't say how much of an improvement in fuel economy it expects from the 2014 Jetta, the new engine will offer potential efficiencies on a number of fronts. Not only is the engine lighter, according to Michel, but it will also herald the adoption of electric power steering. Perhaps more exciting for enthusiasts is that Michel promised that the move to EPAS and changes in the suspension tuning necessitated by the overhaul will allow VW to tune the base car to be a bit sportier than the current model.Scroll down to read VW's full press release on the 2013 model year changes.Continue reading 2014 VW Jetta to drop five-cylinder in favor of turbo four2014 VW Jetta to drop five-cylinder in favor of turbo four originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 18:14:00 EST. Well, here's something a bit greener to chew on, General Motors says this: almost two out of every three miles driven in a Chevrolet Volt are battery-powered. That's what the official Chevrolet website dedicated to the extended-range plug-in is calculating. The spinning meter (you can kill some valuable time watching it) says Volt drivers have cumulatively tallied just over 100-million miles (the data is constantly updated, live, from the cars out there). Out of those, over 63 million were powered from electricity, as opposed to the gas that's used to power the car's on-board generator once the juice runs out. The upshot, according to Chevy, is that Volt drivers have saved 3.32 million gallons of fuel compared to all-gas driving. At today's fuel prices, that adds up to about $10 million, according to AAA's latest gas-price survey. GM is looking to further generate sales momentum for the Volt. Model sales through the first half of the year totaled 8,817 units, or about 1,100 more than Chevy sold all of last year.Two-thirds of Chevy Volt's 100-million miles have been battery-powered originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 17:51:00 EST. This sort of hyper-paranoia is great for keeping both bike and rider in one piece, but it can also easily tint your view of the rest of humanity. When an absent-minded teen wanders into your lane or elderly driver calmly ignores a stop sign right in front of you, the instances serve as proof of everyone's murderous intentions. It's as if a tiny light bulb illuminates inside your skull, underscoring in living color that yes, these people really are doing these things on purpose. Of course, that's not the case nine times out of 10. People are screw-offs behind the wheel because the perceived stakes are so low. But on a bike, the difference between coming to a complete stop and rolling a red light can separate getting home to the wife in one piece and wondering where your right leg got off to. Not every rider embraces this sort of uber paranoia, though. We're beginning to think it's a cultural marker. The two videos below beautifully underscore the difference between angry-riding Americans and their forgiving Canadian counterparts. Check them out to see what we mean and see if you can guess which is which.Continue reading Watch Americans, Canadians react very differently to two-wheeled skirmishesWatch Americans, Canadians react very differently to two-wheeled skirmishes originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 16:56:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jul 2012 02:33 PM PDT ![]() Two-thirds of Chevy Volt's 100-million miles have been battery-powered Filed under: Hybrid, Hatchback, Chevrolet, Electric According to those old Trident commercials, four out of five dentists recommended sugarless gum for patients who chewed gum. Model sales through the first half of the year totaled 8,817 units, or about 1,100 more than Chevy sold all of last year.Two-thirds of Chevy Volt's 100-million miles have been battery-powered originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 15:32:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jul 2012 01:21 PM PDT ![]() Report: Nürburgring goes bust, EU not planning to help Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Government/Legal, Earnings/Financials The Nürburgring is officially broke. According to various German sources, the only chance the owners of the 'Ring have to fend off bankruptcy is if the track gets 13 million euros of new life injected into it. Problem is, state officials have said it's not going to happen. In other words, the Nürburgring will go into administration and its future will at least in part be decided in court. Also up for debate will be the legality of 524 million euros worth of funding that the state has already pumped into the track, an amusement park with hotels and a shopping mall that make up the local attraction. Reports indicate that the rest of 2012 will proceed as planned at the 'Ring. After that, it's anybody's guess what will happen to the famous German racetrack.Nürburgring goes bust, EU not planning to help originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 15:59:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jul 2012 01:21 PM PDT ![]() Consumers say they want more fuel-efficient vehicles, but do they buy? Filed under: MPG, Legislation and Policy, USA Could this be a case of "do as we say, not as we do"? A quick look at a recent Consumer Federation of America (CFA) survey certainly seems to indicate it. According to the CFA's May poll of 1,000 people, Americans overwhelmingly favor the Obama Administration's plan to ratify stricter fuel-economy and greenhouse-gas emissions standards, which would require automakers to improve fleetwide fuel economy by about 70 percent over the next dozen years. Almost nine in 10 people surveyed said the U.S. should cut its oil consumption, while three-quarters were in favor of the proposed fuel-economy standards. And two-thirds said they were okay with higher vehicle prices that would likely be the result of such standards. Additionally, respondents said - on average, of course - that their next cars would get about seven miles per gallon more than their current vehicles. All of this is fine and good, except there's one problem: Americans tend to buy a lot of gas guzzlers as soon as the price of fuel drops. Earlier this month, TrueCar reported that fleetwide fuel economy in June fell for the third consecutive month, likely reflecting the steady drop in gas prices during the past few months. Later this year, the Obama Administration will likely impose 2025 Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards that were outlined last year. The standards would mean a real-world fuel economy requirement of about 40 miles per gallon, compared to the current average of about 23 miles per gallon.Continue reading Consumers say they want more fuel-efficient vehicles, but do they buy?Consumers say they want more fuel-efficient vehicles, but do they buy? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 15:49:00 EST.
