Video: How the V8 became drifting's engine of choice
Filed under: Motorsports Early privately-owned drift cars were fitted with with either turbocharged Nissan S13, S14 and S15 (four-cylinder) or turbocharged Toyota 1JZ (six-cylinder) powerplants. They were easy to work on, reliable, and they produced plenty of the wheel-spinning power needed for a smoky sideways show. But today, as real money flows into the sport, the teams taking the podiums at the professional Formula Drift events are much more likely to use American V8 power - naturally-aspirated big-bore Chevrolet LS muscle that makes a tire-cording 700-plus horsepower. The torquey V8s give the drivers more control when they run side-by-side. As one puts it, "...the way Formula D now is, with tandem, you want to be on someone's door." This video, shot by MPGomatic, takes a closer look at why the motorsport made the switch from low displacement/forced induction to big displacement/naturally aspirated power. Filed under: Etc., Toys/Games Here we have the second interesting tidbit about the Need for Speed movie recently fast-tracked by Dreamworks studios, after finding out it would be helmed by stuntman and Act of Valor co-director Scott Waugh: it's slated for a February 7, 2014 release. Hollywood generally reserves that month for dramas, so action films released then don't face a lot of competition within the genre. None of the Fast & Furious movies were released in February, and if you're wondering, the sixth film in that franchise is due Memorial Day weekend, 2013. Dreamworks wants to give Need for Speed a chance to get its own air, but the studio's February-release track record is pretty bad, with bombs like I am Number Four, Euro Trip, and Norbit. (A notable exception? Old School.) NFS director Waugh probably likes February, though. Does the Toyota 2000GT SEV foretell an electric sports car? [w/video]
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Solar, Toyota, UK The totally awesome Toyota 2000GT SEV unveiled earlier this year was the result of what was called the "Crazy Car Project," undertaken by the Toyota Automobile Association. While no doubt some thought that converting the iconic car, of which only 353 examples were made, to run on solar power a bit insane, perhaps there was a method to their madness. While the CCP website says the solar-powered variant was built for the purpose of "making people feel an excitement of driving and to have a chance to think about our earth in an innovative way", a report over at Autocar suggests that the automaker is actually using it as a platform to test out certain ideas. Ideas like a manual transmission mated to an electric motor, for example. With an eye toward building an all-electric city car and, eventually, a sports car, the Japanese automaker is considering using the old-fashioned stick to inject more driving joy into the electric experience. While there certainly is an argument to be made for packaging a gear shifter in certain EVs - especially those with lower-voltage systems - we hope Toyota engineers also consider the high-voltage/high-regen route, which can mimic some aspects of the manual feel and also provide for better efficiency and performance. To get a sense for what driving the 2000GT SEV is like, scroll down for video of it making a recent run up the Goodwood track. And before you ask, that noise seemingly emanating from the electric drivetrain is on purpose. Controlled by iPad via wifi, its HALOsonic system produces sounds to provide feedback for the driver. Los chicos de Carrossegredos han cazado la nueva generación que debería presentarse en el próximo Salón del Automóvil de Sao Paulo que abrirá sus puertas en octubre. Básicamente igual en líneas generales al nuestro que podemos ver por carreteras europeas, en la imagen apreciamos un paragolpes delantero diferente, con luces diurnas integradas, y una parrilla cromada que toma el todo el protagonismo. Las ópticas, aunque de igual forma, parecen contar con una distribución de las funciones diferente. En los seis primeros meses del 2012 se han matriculado sólo 295 unidades, cifra muy inferior a la de sus más directos rivales como son el León (8.741 uds) y Auris (5.565 uds), estos dos también disponibles con una única carrocería de cinco puertas. Para tratar de animar las ventas y de paso reducir el stock acumulado, en Fiat realizan una promoción por la que te puedes llevar un 1.4i 16v con 95 CV y acabado Active desde 11.100 €. No es un motor prestacional ni el equipamiento muy completo (lleva aire, ESP, paquete eléctrico y radio CD MP3), pero por una tarifa low-cost te llevas un coche bien acabado, de buen comportamiento, amplio y versátil. If either side makes a statement at all, it's usually full of platitudes and the kind of celebrity divorce tone that leads you to wonder, "What happened there?" There's none of that after Mini Canada separated from its agency of ten years, Taxi in Toronto - well, almost none of it. Instead, Taxi is taking its own 2008 Mini, the one it displayed in its boardroom, for one final publicity splurge by auctioning it on eBay and donating the proceeds to Toronto's Covenant House. ETC: Retail Car Show: Spotting future classics at the big-box store
Filed under: Classics, Etc. Shopping trips become protracted. Friends and family call, wondering if you've been abducted. But it's a compulsion car enthusiasts can't help. Always on the lookout for interesting and exciting cars, any random parking lot can turn into a smorgasbord of "I haven't seen one of those in years!" You stand there taking smartphone pics of random old cars, confusing passers-by as you text and tweet your finds with a goofy smile on your face. It's inescapable and unavoidable, so you might as well just celebrate the addiction. To that end, here are some of my most recent finds from a weekend shopping excursion. The cars stood out for a few different reasons, but mostly because they're increasingly rare. When was the last time you saw a Ford Festiva that clean? Wouldn't you like to own that second-generation Toyota MR2? Check out that Acura Legend; elegant, mostly rust-free (surprisingly) and on its way to being a classic for a new generation. The capper, though, was the final-gen Toyota Cressida. Rare when it was new, it's even rarer now. Tras más de 2,5 millones de Prius vendidos desde su lanzamiento comercial, en 1997, los rivales no han cesado de intentar seguir el ritmo del gigante nipón (con más o menos éxito, según las marcas). La última incorporación a la gama híbrida de Toyota es este Yaris. La posibilidad de disponer de un coche híbrido del tamaño de un Clio o un Fiesta es toda un novedad y un acierto. Puede que técnicamente no sea tan avanzado como su hermano mayor, el Prius, pero en el segmento B es toda una primicia (aunque el Honda Jazz Hybrid llegó primero). Debido a la propia idiosincrasia de los híbridos, eminentemente urbanos, la carrocería del Yaris resulta ideal para ello. Además, su precio competitivo -desde 15.900 euros-, abre la puerta de los híbridos a un abanico inmenso de clientela. Desde los que no se podían permitir un Prius (22.600 euros para la versión básica) hasta los que verían de un buen ojo un híbrido urbano como segundo coche de la familia, pasando por las grandes empresas y colectividades con flotas de vehículos urbanos, todos pueden estar tentados por un híbrido tan pequeño. Toyota está, sencillamente, abriendo la veda de los utilitarios híbridos. ¡Y de qué manera! Ya sabemos incluso el precio con el que partirá en Alemania, la oferta de motores inicial y los niveles de equipamiento. A todo esto sumamos ahora una galería de imágenes mucho más completa. Este sedán con portón posterior y maleterazo de 550 litros llegará al mercado español en los próximos meses. Compartirá muchos elementos con el SEAT Toledo y ambos saldrán de las mismas instalaciones situadas en la Republica Checa. La oferta de motores contemplará bloques de gasolina de entre 75 y 122 CV, y en diésel un 1.6 TDI con 105 CV al que le seguirá algo más adelante una variante descafeinada con 90 CV. Según la mecánica podrá asociarse al cambio DSG. De cara al equipamiento, Skoda ha estructurado la gama en tres niveles: Easy, Ambiente y Elegance. Todos ellos llevarán seis airbags, dirección asistida, ABS, EBD, ESP, TCS y aire acondicionado, al menos en los países occidentales. Official: Nissan Leaf gets badged for police duty in Portugal
Filed under: Europe, Government/Legal, Hatchback, Nissan, Electric Plug-in vehicles perform police duties for Scotland Yard (Vauxhall Ampera) and the NYPD (Chevrolet Volt) and we've all seen the little EV parking-enforcement vehicles, so today's announcement that the Nissan Leaf will be used as a police vehicle in Portugal isn't surprising. What's interesting is that the eight patrol EVs are touted as a way for the fuzz to "arrive at the scene of a crime in near silence." Portugal's PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) will use the all-electric hatchbacks mostly for the Safe School Program, Nissan said in a statement, but they are decked out and ready "to perform other police duties at any time" should the need arise.
