Posted: 13 Jul 2012 07:07 PM PDT ![]() Official: Nissan designers consult Blue Angels for inspiration, photo op [w/video] Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Technology, Videos, Nissan, Design/Style We've been hearing about automobiles being inspired by jets for decades. Saab even used it as a slogan for a number of years. But what exactly does it mean? Nissan recently paid a visit to the United States Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron training facility to get a feel for the fighter jets they fly as well as how the pilots interact with their machines. The result? Well, we still don't know what it means for a car to be inspired by jets... Nissan says its "personnel returned with a number of creative ideas and actionable items from both a design and product development standpoint," but the Japanese automaker declines to get more specific. Maybe the next GT-R will come with an ejector seat, or perhaps a joystick in lieu of a steering wheel. But probably not. Even if we don't quite get it, that doesn't mean nothing good came from the exercise. Blue Angels airframe structural mechanic Eric Vandamme (who has the second best name ever) got the chance to drive a new Nissan GT-R, and he came away predictably impressed: "If I had the keys to the jet, I would trade you," he says. We know a GT-R doesn't come cheap, but we suspect Nissan would make out quite well in that fantasy transaction. Want to watch a video produced by Nissan about the Blue Angels and how its engineers were inspired? Of course you do. Scroll below for the news broadcast-style story, where you'll also find a related press release.Continue reading Nissan designers consult Blue Angels for inspiration, photo op [w/video]Nissan designers consult Blue Angels for inspiration, photo op [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 19:58:00 EST. Posted: 13 Jul 2012 06:34 PM PDT ![]() Nissan Leaf gets badged for police duty in Portugal Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Europe/EU Let's see, we've had plug-in vehicles do cop car duty at Scotland Yard (Vauxhall Ampera) and New York City (Chevrolet Volt) and we've all seen the little EV parking meter vehicles, so today's announcement that the Nissan Leaf is going to be used as a police vehicle in Portugal isn't exactly a surprise. What is interesting is that the eight EVs that will soon be used on patrol are being touted as a way for the fuzz to "arrive at the scene of a crime in near silence." Portugal's PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) will use the all-electric hatchbacks mostly for the Safe School Program, Nissan said in a statement, but they are decked out and ready "to perform other police duties at any time" should they be asked to do so. We're guessing long-haul chases will not be part of the mission, but other than that, we don't see any reason the eight Leaf will be treated much differently than the other 5,000 in the PSP fleet, especially since Portugal has been building a network of EV chargers, Level 2 and quick chargers among them.Continue reading Nissan Leaf gets badged for police duty in PortugalNissan Leaf gets badged for police duty in Portugal originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 19:43:00 EST. The two countries don't share a border, but the two cars do share an origin: the T500 uses slightly redesigned bodywork from the K1 but is substantially reengineered underneath, one such example being the presence of a mid-mounted 450-horsepower Audi V8.Autocar went to Slovenia to give it a spin and reviewer Matt Prior liked it, praising its engine response, chassis engineering, fit-and-finish and huge options list. In fact, for the company's first effort, it sounds remarkably polished and well-engineered. The biggest hurdle the open-top T500 could have to jump is its own price: at £300,000 (around $467,000), it's more expensive than the £195,500 McLaren MP4-12C Spider (around $300k), and its price exceeds that of the €255,000 Lamborghini Aventador ($400k) and the predicted €274,000 price of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta (circa $425k). But we're told two have already been ordered and paid for, and the Tushek folks make no claims about wanting to take over the world, planning to build just 30 over the next four years. Yet if that's the bar for the T500, we can only wonder what the Tushek Forego T700 is will be charged with. You can checkout Prior's T500 review in the video below.Continue reading Watch and hear Slovenia's first supercar, the Tushek Renovatio T500Watch and hear Slovenia's first supercar, the Tushek Renovatio T500 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 19:31:00 EST. That includes everything from the fabled Lotus Carlton to the Merkur Scorpio and even unlovables like the second-generation Infiniti M. But few misfit performance saloons rub us the right way like those from Sweden - everything from the Saab 9000 Turbo to its 9-3 Viggen and Volvo's 850 T-5R and S60 R routinely catch our eyes in the classifieds. We love them all, but we've never been foolish enough to think that they were the equals of their German contemporaries. While some of them have been able to put up great in-period numbers, they always somehow fell a bit short in real-world flogging, hoping to make up the difference in rarity and eccentricity. Now, however, there might finally be a swift Swede that doesn't fall into this trap, though it sounds like it might cost en arm och ett ben (an arm and a leg). According to Autocar, Volvo is in "serious discussion" with its favorite tuner to bring a production version of its utterly bonkers S60 Polestar Concept to market. Polestar, as you may recall, has already linked arms with the Trollhättan automaker to create a branded brace of more powerful Volvo models - including the S60 - but nothing as extreme as this 508-horsepower all-wheel-drive hero car. Unfortunately, Autocar suggests that in order to build a business case for this car, Volvo is ballparking a price of at least £100,000, or around $155,000. That's nearly $100,000 dearer than likely competitors like the Audi RS4, BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Would such a costly and left-field machine find buyers? It sounds like a bit of a tough sell, but who knows? Nissan has apparently found a way to charge deep into the six figures for its galactically powerful Juke-R. For its part, Volvo reportedly already sold the original concept to an eager buyer for $300,000...Volvo in "serious discussion" to produce Polestar S60 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 18:59:00 EST. Filed under: Convertible, Government/Legal, Hatchback, Mini A group of Florida plaintiffs have come together to file a class action lawsuit against Mini. Their issue is with the reliability of the Continuously Variable Transmissions in first-generation Cooper hatchbacks from 2002-2006 and in Cooper Convertible models from 2006-2008. A cursory web search on the matter returns plenty of results from Mini owners complaining of the same issue, sudden failure of the CVT, and having mixed fortunes at Mini dealers when trying to get the situation resolved. The Florida suit comes a year after a class action suit was filed against Mini in California for the same reason. As with the Florida case, the California legal action Brad Aarons v. BMW of North America, LLC sees "restitution, damages and other relief" for plaintiffs who were "required to spend approximately $6,000 to $9,000 (one-third to one-half of the original purchase price) to repair or replace their CVTs, or sell their vehicle without repair for a substantial loss...." Posted: 13 Jul 2012 04:14 PM PDT ![]() With WattStation Connect, GE using PayPal for electric vehicle fill-ups Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in It's not too difficult to make the case that PayPal has already played a large role in the modern resurgence of electric vehicles. After all, Elon Musk - now the CEO of Tesla Motors - made a nice chunk of coin selling the online payment service to eBay before coming to the EV company. Turns out, the circle is coming 'round again with General Electric's announcement that its EV chargers will soon accept PayPal. The deal means drivers will be able to use GE's WattStation Connect mobile app (get it for iPhone here; no word on an Android version) to connect to PayPal when charging thanks to this mouthful of a product: the "ecomagination[TM]-approved WattStation[TM] and WattStation[TM] Connect, a complete electric vehicle (EV) charging platform solution." The short version is that GE's free app will show nearby WattStations, their statuses and prices as well as allow you to pay for the charge from your PayPal account. The app identifies which charger you're at using a QR code you point your iPhone's camera at. Some of this functionality is also available at the new WattStation website. Scott Dunlap, vice president of emerging opportunities at PayPal (yes, "emerging opportunities" needs a VP), said in a statement that making EV charging easy is important. "Simplicity and convenience are key to mass adoption of any new technology, something we know well at PayPal," he said. For now, PayPal the only method of payment available through the WattStation. Ashley Kusowski, communications leader for GE Energy Industrial Solutions, told AutoblogGreen that: We are also working on RFID payment cards which will be out shortly. Users also have the option to speak to an operator over the phone to take regular credit card payment. Based on research GE has conducted, the target market for EVs is very tech savvy and often uses mobile apps. GE has created an end-to-end solution that provides an easy and convenient payment option using the mobile app and PayPal. While you're out and about paying with what can feel like virtual money, GE is also in favor of you earning money from your EV infrastructure at home. By opening up your charger to the masses - again, through WattStation Connect - you can have strangers fill up their batteries from your outlet. Payments, naturally, are delivered via PayPal. What, no Bitcoin?Continue reading With WattStation Connect, GE using PayPal for electric vehicle fill-upsWith WattStation Connect, GE using PayPal for electric vehicle fill-ups originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 17:55:00 EST. Posted: 13 Jul 2012 02:55 PM PDT ![]() Official: Study says EV battery pricing could plunge by 70% by 2025 Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Technology, Hatchback, Ford, Earnings/Financials, ElectricReuters is reporting on a new study that suggests the cost of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles could plummet dramatically by 2025. Consulting firm McKinsey & Co. conducted the study, which indicated increasing oil prices and tougher fuel economy standards could force automakers to build more electric cars, thereby increasing the scale of lithium-ion battery manufacturing by significant margins. In addition, the research predicts consumer electronics companies like Apple may lend some technology advancements to reduce costs associated with producing the battery packs themselves. All told, the study expects to see prices fall from $500-$600 per kilowatt hour to $200 by 2020 and $160 by 2025. For example, Reuters points out that the 23 kilowatt hour battery in the 2013 Ford Focus Electric is estimated to cost between $12,000 and $15,000. The McKinsey study claims that if fuel prices hold steady at $3.50 per gallon and batteries fall to the projected levels, automakers could begin to offer price-competitive electric vehicles. The study also indicates battery manufacturers may begin to standardize cell construction and production, further reducing the cost of equipment needed to produce the packs.Study says EV battery pricing could plunge by 70% by 2025 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 17:44:00 EST. Posted: 13 Jul 2012 02:55 PM PDT ![]() Report: Pair of diesels headed for BMW U.S. dealers Filed under: BMW, DieselBMW first introduced the North American market to diesels way back in 1983, with the introduction of its 524td. Under the hood of the E28 5 Series was the automaker's M21 turbocharged diesel, a 2.4-liter inline-six rated at 115 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. It was mated to a standard four-speed automatic transmission. At the time, BMW claimed it was the world's fastest production diesel-powered car, but its numbers (0-60 in about 12 seconds and a maximum speed of 112 mph) look rather pathetic today. It was sold for just one model year. In an effort to convince buyers that diesel was a sporty alternative to gasoline, BMW reintroduced a potent diesel powerplant to the States in 2009. It was the automaker's M57 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 265 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. Mounted in the nose of the E90 3 Series sedan and mated to a six-speed automatic, the 335d helped the automaker redefine oil-burning performance (0-60 in 5.3 seconds with a top speed governed to 130 mph) here in America. The X5 35d crossover, fitted with the same engine and strong performance (0-60 in 6.9 seconds), soon followed. But BMW doesn't really need to prove diesel's performance anymore, as fuel economy sells. With that comes the announcement of two fresh, and more efficient, oil-burning powerplants. A new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder will likely be rated at 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while a new turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder is expected to make 255 horsepower and undisclosed torque. According to our sources, the 2.0-liter (similar to the one pictured above) will find its home in the 3 Series and X1, while the new 3.0-liter will replace the M57 under the hood of the X3 and X5 (with eight-speed gearboxes). Expect the engines to spread across the BMW lineup if well received.Pair of diesels headed for BMW U.S. dealers originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 17:30:00 EST. Continue reading El CEO de Audi visita oficialmente DucatiEl CEO de Audi visita oficialmente Ducati originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 17:27:00 EST. So when recently faced with an electrical problem in his Formula Renault 2.0 car's steering wheel, Jeroen Slaghekke was faced with pitting and losing position or taking a chance. Slaghekke is apparently a gambling man and decided to literally take fate in his own hands. Watch the video below and pay close attention at about the 11 second mark. Up comes a long straightaway, off comes the steering wheel and then, boom, three seconds later, the problem's fixed and the wheel's back on in plenty of time to take the left-hander. It's admittedly not the most dramatic of videos, but that's exactly what makes it so impressive: There's no drama, no panic. Just quick, cool thinking that ended with Slaghekke taking 6th place at Oschersleben. We look forward to seeing how his future career turns out.Continue reading Formula racer removes steering wheel at full speed for quick fixFormula racer removes steering wheel at full speed for quick fix originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 16:58:00 EST. EcoMotors International is in that category now that its most-recent financing round included a second investment from the Microsoft Founder. EcoMotors, which makes especially efficient internal combustion engines and has more recently started making diesel motors, just announced a $32.5-million Series C financing round, which also includes repeat funding partners Khosla Ventures and new investor Braemar Energy Ventures. So far, the company, which counts Navistar and Zhongding Holding Group as its customers, has raised $66 million in equity. Gates and Silicon Valley-based Khosla Ventures were part of a July 2010 funding round that totaled $23.5 million. EcoMotors' engines use what it calls an Opposed-Piston-Opposed-Cylinder (OPOC) layout, which the company says uses just 40 percent of the components of a traditional engine and cut fuel use in half. The OPOC layout was developed by Peter Hofbauer, who'd previously been a key player in developing Volkswagen's clean-diesel engines.Continue reading EcoMotors gets $32.5 million in new funding round, including money from Bill GatesEcoMotors gets $32.5 million in new funding round, including money from Bill Gates originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 16:12:00 EST. Meet the TR650 Strada and its off-road twin, the TR650 Terra. Both bikes rock a 625cc water-cooled, single-cylinder dual-overhead cam engine good for around 58 horsepower. There's also a smidge over 44 lb-ft of torque on hand, which should be more than enough to have eye-popping fun with the 375-pound bike. If this recipe sounds a little familiar, it certainly should. The TR650 gets its bones from the BMW G650GS, though with a few tweaks. Engineers have rolled in a reworked fuel-injection system, tweaked the cam and incorporated larger valves. The TR650 Terra is a bit lighter at 368 pounds and offers the option of an anti-lock brake system, whereas its tarmac-oriented brother features ABS as standard equipment. A 21-inch spoked wheel handles rolling duties up front, while an 18-inch version takes care of the rear. Aggressive rubber, a lower seat and marginally longer wheelbase also help differentiate the Terra from the Strada. While development of the car has continued in earnest, SRT Motorsports, along with partner Riley Technologies, has only been able to perform three test sessions since its debut in April - one at Carolina Motorsports Park in South Carolina, another time at Virginia International Raceway, and most recently at Mid-Ohio over the July 4 holiday. Posted: 13 Jul 2012 11:27 AM PDT ![]() Report: Sen Grassley asks if Toyota got off easy with unintended acceleration debacle Filed under: Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Technology, ToyotaToyota is facing further fallout from its recent unintended acceleration debacle, with Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to reopen its investigation into the situation that led Toyota to recall some eight million vehicles. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, Grassley has written a letter to NHTSA director David Strickland, stating in part, "Key questions about the cause of unintended acceleration remain unanswered." Grassley's contention is that because neither of the two independent investigations into the issue produced a definitive cause or explanation, further digging is necessary. Most of the unintended acceleration incidents in the NASA and National Academy of Sciences reports not attributed to trapped floormats or other problems with accelerator pedals were blamed on driver error, according to the report, but both studies concluded that other unknown issues could be at play. According to Automotive News, Grassley is particularly concerned about the "tin whiskers" phenomenon, in which tiny threads of conductive crystal can grow on circuit boards. Toyota has responded to the Grassley letter, issuing a statement that reads, in part, "There is no problem with the electronic throttle control systems in Toyota vehicles - and all the scientific evidence confirms it. So-called 'tin whiskers' are not a new phenomenon and do not represent a mysterious or undetectable problem in a vehicle's electronics."Sen Grassley asks if Toyota got off easy with unintended acceleration debacle originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 13:27:00 EST. Posted: 13 Jul 2012 11:27 AM PDT ![]() Video: Romanian gas is like a troupe of French maids for your engine Filed under: Europe, Marketing/Advertising, Videos Ah, Romania, that country of 19 million that many would be hard pressed to find on a map without a label. The nation that's given us world-class literature, Olympic athletes, the Roma, a flighty chap we call Dracula and a stretch of the Transfagarasan Highway, among the world's best drives, among other things. Romania is also known for beautiful women, and according to a Rompetrol commercial, if you fill up with its new Efix Gasoline 95 or diesel, it will be like having a team of those women - dressed as French maids, of course - cleaning out your engine. The fuel itself is mixed with additives to help clean the engine, but it appears that instead of selling petrol or diesel with Efix, as Chevron here sells fuel with its Techron additive, the fuel itself is called Efix. Which is neither here nor there, really, when there are Romanian maids in French cosplay in the commercial below.Continue reading Romanian gas is like a troupe of French maids for your engineRomanian gas is like a troupe of French maids for your engine originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 12:46:00 EST. Posted: 13 Jul 2012 11:27 AM PDT ![]() Long Term: 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: Wrap-Up [w/video] Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Volkswagen, Diesel, Long-Term GarageShe Ain't What She Used To Be Truth be told, we never had any intention of spending a full year with Volkswagen's sixth-generation Jetta. We were enjoying many a happy trail with our 2010 TDI Cup Street Edition - a car that won us over with its excellent mix of sport and efficiency. It was, perhaps, the best model to come out of the Jetta's fifth generation, and we were glad to have it, especially after we first met the controversially redesigned 2011 model that wasn't exactly garnering rave reviews. But then the TDI Cup Street met a very tragic and mysterious demise. (We still miss you, Heidi.) To ease our pain, Volkswagen offered up the chance to spend one year with the 2011 Jetta TDI you see here. Sure, it uses the same torquey 2.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-four as the old Jetta, but nearly everything else had been changed... and not necessarily for the better. So how would a full year with the new Jetta TDI stack up after we had eight lovely months of diesel motoring with Frou Cup Street? Would we still love it like the old model, or would we simply end the year with a resounding... "Meh?"Continue reading 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: Wrap-Up [w/video]2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: Wrap-Up [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 11:57:00 EST.
