SEAT León: Se filtra la trasera de la nueva versión
Filed under: SEAT, Fotos espía, Compactos A escasos días de que SEAT muestre las primeras imágenes oficiales del nuevo León, los chicos del ClubSeatLeón se han hecho con una instantánea tirada desde un móvil, donde se ve la trasera. El autor de la misma, raksusklei, ha visto el resto del coche, y comenta varias recreaciones publicadas en el mismo hilo del foro (pincha la imagen para verlas), donde habla del diseño interior. Si es cierto lo que comenta, tendrá MMI "a lo Audi", pantalla emergente del salpicadero como el A3, y en general un aspecto de gran calidad y modernidad, que recuerda a sus primos de Ingolstadt. De lo que vemos por fuera nos quedamos con las alargadas ópticas, y un diseño que recuerda al del Ibiza tras el restyling. Probablemente en pocos días SEAT abra el baúl donde esconde el material oficial del León, y dejaremos de especular, pero entre tanto tenemos que conformarnos con esto, que no es poco. Al nuevo León se le espera para el Salón de París, a finales del mes de septiembre. ¿Os gusta? European electric vehicle charging-station revenue will jump tenfold by 2020

Europe's electric-vehicle charging station revenue will jump more than tenfold by the end of the decade as automakers work towards a unified charging standard and demand for plug-in vehicles rise, Pike Research says. Annual European charging-station revenue will increase to about $1.27 billion in 2020 from about $90 million this year, according to Pike Research. Germany alone will account for almost a quarter of Europe's charging equipment sales through the end of the decade. That makes sense because, according to a Pike Research report released last year, Germany will have more than a half-million plug-in vehicles on its roads by 2017 and more than 1 million by the end of the decade. Sales will be helped by both more EV sales and a growing consensus among automakers on AC and DC charging equipment. In May, BMW, Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen were among the eight U.S. and German automakers that demonstrated a single-port fast-charging system for electric vehicles at Los Angeles's Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 (EVS26). History books tell us that the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 made its first major impact on the world scene when a young Ayrton Senna piloted one to victory at the Nürburgring in a promotional race in 1984.BMW responded in 1986 with the E30 M3. "There are three types of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics," goes the old quote variously attributed to Mark Twain, Benjamin Disraeli and other wits. Were they writing today, they'd probably add a fourth: fuel economy numbers. As regular readers have heard, Hyundai is being sued for allegedly misleading mileage ads. Honda, meanwhile, beat back one Civic Hybrid owners mileage lawsuit upon appeal but also agreed to a settlement covering thousands of others who didn't get nearly what the automaker promised. Without taking sides in these individual cases. it's nonetheless safe to say that mileage claims are controversial at best, and often inaccurate, at least in terms of what real world driving is likely to yield. "Your mileage may vary" is a disclaimer we've all heard, and certainly there are enough variables that impact what your car, truck or crossover will deliver: such factors as the speed you drive, what altitude the vehicle is operated at, what fuel you use, whether your tires are properly inflated and how many passengers you've got crammed into the backseat. And considering the added bulk too many of us carry around our middles, even that can play a role. Paul A. Report: Hyundai under threat of strike in Korea

Workers lead by Moon Yong, the head of the company's labor union, are threatening to take action unless they receive better pay and reduced work hours. Earlier this week, 70-percent of the 45,000-member union voted to give leaders the power to enact walkouts. Hyundai is already well aware of the damage that strikes can do - the company reportedly estimates labor disruptions between 1987 and 2008 cost it sales of around one million units worth approximately $10 billion. It's been four years since unions staged a strike against Hyundai, and analysts attribute much of the automaker's forward momentum to this period of relative calm. Meanwhile, workers at sister company Kia have voted to pursue a strike as well. That means both companies will see an eight-hour stoppage on Friday, July 12. Organized labor for both manufacturers want a monthly pay increase of $132. They also want to see 30-percent of total company net income be returned to employees in the form of bonuses. The workers are also pushing for plants to move to two eight-hour shifts in place of the double 12-hour schedule. E15 now available, at one lone gas station in Kansas
Filed under: Ethanol, Legislation and Policy, USA A Phillips 66 gas-station in Kansas is the first in the U.S. to offer gas with a 15 percent blend of ethanol - aka E15 - to non-flex fuel vehicles, the New York Times reports. The station will have a formal opening next week. The Phillips 66 is located in Lawrence, KS, about 15 miles west of Kansas City and home to the famed University of Kansas Jayhawks. Drivers will be able to use a blender pump that will serve blends ranging from 10 percent (i.e., the current standard) to 85 percent ethanol. E15 buyers will be required to purchase at least four gallons at a time - a clever move that local regulators are using to prevent owners of lawnmowers, chainsaws and other smaller motorized devices from fueling up, according to the Times. The legalization of selling E15 to newer vehicles has been controversial. Ethanol advocates say E15 will reduce dependency on foreign oil while supporting more U.S. industries. Opponents have questioned whether E15 has been adequately tested in vehicles and say the fuel's higher alcohol content may damage engines. Report: De Tomaso chairman arrested amidst accusations of misappropriated funds
Filed under: Europe, Government/Legal, Plants/Manufacturing, LuxuryGian Mario Rossignolo, the chairman of De Tomaso, has been arrested under suspicion of misusing $9.2 million in public funds, according to Reuters. Rossignolo was taken into custody alongside both the company's head of human resources and a financial intermediary as part of the probe. The executive's lawyers weren't immediately available for comment, though police say De Tomaso may have used a false bank guarantee in order to receive money from the European Union. Those funds may have wound up in the trio's personal bank accounts. Reuters reports De Tomaso received millions of dollars from the government to help re-train around 1,000 workers to build cars that will apparently no longer be built. Last may, the Piedmont region of the EU, which originally provided funding, asked De Tomaso to refund of the $6 million it had granted the automaker. That was the impetus for Autoline After Hours creating its automotive fantasy draft last year. It's now an annual event where auto insiders, journalists and others create their dream team of executives to run their fictional companies. And tonight, at 6 PM EST, the whole shebang starts again. Participants this year include John McElroy of Autoline, Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics, Michelle Krebs of Edmunds.com, Drew Winter of Ward's Automotive and Todd Lassa of Motor Trend. Each will get a turn to pick an executive that can help create the most powerful auto company ever. This year, however, Autoline has added a few twists, including a number of required categories. For example, each team must select a woman, and retired or deceased executives are also up for grabs. Video: German town doles out parking spaces based on sex

And now, it's known for having gender-specific parking spaces. After the town's newest public parking lot opened, Triberg mayor Gallus Strobel decided at least two of the spots were hard to get into, "They could be dangerous for your car, so at the same time, we decided to make them for me and then give 12 others for women," Strobel said. Women get the larger, better lit spots. He admits most of the town thinks it's a joke, and that he does, too. But he says women are welcome to attempt parking in the men's spots but that it won't be easy for them. "Like my secretary. Five time she tried and no success," Strobel said. The mayor admits the parking rule is out of bounds and controversial, but he hopes it brings the town a little more notoriety. "Perhaps many more people would like to come and not only see our waterfalls but try our parking," he said. "It's a marketing idea and it works. Aunque pensábamos que haría acto de presencia con un propulsor V8 sobrealimentado, el descapotable que apareció en el evento británico tenía entre sus ruedas delanteras un V6 de gasolina con compresor volumétrico. Los chicos de JLR no desaprovecharon la ocasión, y además de poner los dientes largos a los asistentes, y dejar fotografiar el coche en movimiento y con la capota bajada, también produjeron su propio vídeo de la subida. Y como no podía ser de otra manera, te lo hemos colocado tras el salto para que disfrutes con el bonito sonido del motor inglés. FedEx expands Nissan e-van testing to Yokohama

The delivery company will test the Nissan for about a month. Nissan's already tested the EV in Japan with AEON Retail Co. The agreement marks a continuation of the road-testing partnership between FedEx and Nissan. FedEx started testing the electric concept version of Nissan's NV200 in Europe last fall, and expanded that effort to the U.K. in December. Nissan said in May that it's spending about $125 million upgrading its NV200 factory in Barcelona to accommodate production of the electric van, which is expected to start by spring 2014. The concept version uses the same powertrain as the Nissan Leaf. FedEx says it has about 43 permanent electric vehicles in the U.S. and Europe, in addition to more than 300 hybrid-electric delivery trucks. Despite having gotten far enough into development that our spy shooters were able to catch the car during testing on public roads, the powers that be have reportedly scuttled those plans. The report says marketing concerns are likely to blame, as Mini did not want to dilute enthusiasm for the limited-production Cooper JCW GP. Like its predecessor, the 2006 Mini Cooper S JCW GP, just 2,000 examples are to be sold worldwide, and Mini has yet to even release full specs on the Cooper-based JCW GP. While this move makes sense to us largely because we're not fans of the Coupe, MotoringFile does hedge its bets, writing that the JCW GP Coupe "may not be entirely dead." Confirmed: Suzuki Grand Vitara getting facelift for 2013
Filed under: SUV, Japan, Suzuki, Design/Style Yesterday Suzuki announced that a refreshed Japanese-market Suzuki Escudo will bow for 2013, sporting a new front fascia and wheels and dropping its rear spare tire carrier, among other tweaks. Suzuki's American PR staff has confirmed to Autoblog that we will be getting some of the updates here as well, in the form of a facelifted 2013 Suzuki Grand Vitara. Suzuki tells us that an official announcement will be made later this month, but confirmed that the Grand Vitara will be indeed be offered in a model sans external spare tire and extra side mirror. The updated look seems designed to make the long-in-the-tooth Grand Vitara seem more of a crossover than traditional SUV, though we assume Suzuki isn't ditching the transfer case and low-range gearing that sets it apart from the cute ute set. Japanese customers will also get a special X-Adventure edition of the Escudo, which packages features like a sunroof, stability control, 18-inch wheels, and an interior with contrasting red stitching on the suede-look seats and leather-wrapped wheel and gearshift. Fiat 500L to launch with world's first in-car coffee maker option [w/video]
Filed under: Europe, Technology, Videos, Crossover, Design/Style, Fiat Generally speaking, until we've had at least twice of the FDA's recommended daily allowance of caffeine, we aren't as observant as we need to be. For instance, when we wrote about the newly announced Fiat 500L, we were so distracted by its massive glass roof, seating for five and the potential of six engine choices we totally overlooked a small, but buzzworthy option. When launched, the 500L will be the first production car in the world to offer a "true espresso coffee machine." Yup, right there between the front seats plugged into its very own power source will be an actual, water-boiling, caffeine-dispensing, java-juicer. Developed by famed Italian coffee maker Lavazza, the "Coffee Experience" kit comes with car coffee cups, a spoon holder and its own sugar container. At least one media outlet says the kit will cost €250 (about $300 USD). Fill the Lavazza 500 base with water and pop it into the center cupholder. The heating element boils the water, steeping the coffee-filled pod in the top part and, seconds later, you have a piping hot cup of brew. Well, not you. Unless you live somewhere other than the States. Because while we fully expect the 500L to be sold here, there's no indication from Fiat that the Coffee Experience kit will make it through the gauntlet of attorneys just itching for a good burn lawsuit. It could happen, but it's not likely, so we're guessing 500L owners will want to keep an eye out on eBay for retrofit possibilities.
