Yet despite the forward progress as evident by the current crop, an oddity always seems to creep into the mix. Enter the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco. As Alex Taylor III points out in Fortune, the new Malibu Eco has been taking its fair amount of guff these days over its cramped rear seats, unimpressive fuel economy and lackluster driving dynamics. It has earned, what Taylor calls, the "most disliked car of the year (so far)" title. The unflattering label is admittedly based purely on the author's overview of the vehicle's reception among the media thus far, but there's probably something to his thoughts. The mild-hybrid Chevrolet left us scratching our heads when we compared it to the brand's own Cruze Eco in our review, a car that is actually larger in many dimensions while being far less expensive. Those on our staff who have driven the Malibu Eco have come away disappointed with the car's handling, fuel economy, tight rear quarters and pricing, but "most disliked" is strong language. We can't help but wonder how the car might have faired if General Motors hadn't rushed to pull production ahead, in the process only making the Eco available instead of a full range of models (we hear there was an engine capacity problem that forced GM's hand). Even if it costs you the 2012 Italian CIV championship race in Mugello. Motorcycle racer Riccardo Russo held a three-bike lead over his nearest racer, but when he started the final lap, Russo thought he had already crossed the finish line. Russo began his celebration by letting off the accelerator and lifting his arm, cheering for himself as all of the other cyclists zoomed past. "What does it matter?" he must have thought. As a visibly pumped Russo stood on the bike's pegs, the Yamaha Team Italia FMI racer still didn't realize he had cashed in his chips a lap too soon. Big deal. Former AMA Pro Superbike rider Steve Atlas decided to have some fun with a Brammo Empulse RR e-bike at Portland International Raceway, racing some club riders on 600cc motorcycles during some warm-up laps, according to Hell For Leather Magazine. The five-minute video isn't for the squeamish, as it's taken from the vantage point of a lower part of the bike, but it does show the electric bike hanging with the others, all with the approximate volume of a skateboard going downhill. The little guys continue to cry foul, insisting that dealership mechanics get repair tools and software that are unavailable on the open market. The manufacturers claim they already provide enough repair information and what they don't disclose is proprietary and needs to be protected. The repair shops retort that manufacturers are putting them at an unfair disadvantage, accusing them of wanting to protect their dealers' revenue stream. All that back and forth - along with the legislative gridlock that has benefitted the carmakers - could end soon in Massachusetts, according to The Wall Street Journal. A ballot measure in November would allow voters to bypass state lawmakers to put a Right To Repair law on the books. The ballot initiative is backed by the Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition, a group of independent mechanics and parts retailers, and supported by AAA Southern New England, whose membership was polled 88 percent in favor of Right To Repair, according to the report. A coalition spokesman told the WSJ that if its initiative succeeds, he expects ballot measures to be launched in other states like New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, where Right To Repair bills have stalled in state legislatures. Our spy photographers caught a parade of the 2014 models with swirly wrapping covering a tweaked front end sporting narrower upper and lower grilles, a new fog light treatment and perhaps a bit more curvature overall. The interior was masked off, but a larger touchscreen is expected to grace the center console. Among the expected new options are a 241-horsepower, 406-pound-foot, 3.0-liter diesel V6 that European Grand Cherokee buyers have been enjoying for some time now, as well as a ZF eight-speed automatic that's likely meant to partner with the Pentastar V6. Although the changes we know of so far might not seem to be worth all the hubbub, they should provide measurable added refinement to an already-polished vehicle that is still selling very well. [w/video] Filed under: Hybrid, Toyota, UK Stop us if you've heard this one: Toyota has just launched a campaign to have voters decide on the accepted plural of the word Prius. Sound familiar? It should - well over a year ago, Toyota was knee-deep in this same exact campaign. In case you don't recall, popular vote favored Prii. We... didn't, and honestly still don't. But that's beside the point. So, what's with the marketing recycle bin? Apparently, the first round of votes were for the U.S. only. Now, the British guys and gals apparently want in on the name game. The choices offered by the automaker are exactly the same as before: Priuses, Prium, Pries, Prii, Prien and simply, Prius. Toyota is looking to emphasis the different variations of the Prius that are offered around the world, including the standard model, the Prius+ (Prius V in the U.S.) and the plug-in Prius. Filed under: Performance, UK, MISCTVR owner Nikolai Smolenski has taken the tiny English car firm on a ride wilder than anything you could get from a Speed 12 (pictured), and now he's riding the name right out of the car business. Telling Autocar that the production possibilities don't make financial sense anymore, he is instead repurposing the hardcore brand into "a new venture building portable wind turbines." We'd say this is a rather odd thing to do with TVR, but the young Russian's run at the captain's wheel has been just this kind of odd since the beginning. The last two years have featured infrequent reports of some kind of new TVR vehicle on the way at some point, powered by either a General Motors LS3 V8, the Corvette ZR1's 638-horsepower LS9, a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder turbodiesel from the BMW 335d, or an electric system. Smolenski, from TVR's new Vienna base, says the company built three evaluation cars, one with that LS3, one with a BMW twin-turbo V8, and one with a 100-kW electric motor. But he believes that with a necessary base price of £100,000 (about $155,000 U.S.) for any of them, they'd be too expensive to sell at the profit he wants - even with a manufacturing tie-up with Caterham. So now TVR will get into the business of making a lot of air - we'll refrain from any (further) jokes. Mientras BMW o Audi declaran ventas récord en la primera mitad del año la firma del rombo ha reconocido que sus entregas han caído un 3,3% respecto a 2011. Los franceses lograron vender 1,33 millones de coches (no incluyen en estas cifras los industriales ligeros). Y eso que el segundo trimestre del año ha sido mejor para la compañía, logrando recuperar respecto a 2011 un 1,2%. Pero la gente de Renault es positiva, y prevé un crecimiento a final de año de alrededor del 5% respecto al ejercicio anterior, gracias a una progresiva deslocalización de ventas respecto a Europa. Sure, hit a wall or another car and there will be some damage and crumpling, but it usually doesn't look like a genuine car crash. A start-up company called BeamNG is working to change that, developing a physics modification for the Cry Engine 3 to create wrecks that appear to be lifted from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash-test video. They team has been at it for a while, and the latest multicore version shows off one- and two-car collisions that feature shattering glass and more realistic deformations. The 2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year award "long list" is out, and 45 vehicles of all descriptions are set to scrap for the hardware. In 2012, the Hyundai Elantra and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque took home the coveted crystal. This year's crop of 2013 model-year entries is a diverse bunch in every sense of the word, from styling to powertrain to price point and intended audience size. Car offerings range from mainstreamers like the Dodge Dart, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima to small-volume players including alt-fuel darlings like the Fit EV and Tesla Model S and high-performance supercars like the SRT Viper. In the Truck/Utility category, mainstream offerings include the Escape, Ram 1500 and Mazda CX-5 along with niche models like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Toyota RAV4 EV. The long list is so named because it functions as an all-encompassing roundup of new or substantially changed vehicles that will debut in time to be considered for the annual awards. Some of the vehicles may not have even been driven by the 50-member jury yet - it is in essence an eligibility list. Later this autumn, when jurors have driven the vehicles and have a clearer picture of which models deserve further consideration, an initial round of voting will be held. The resulting "short list" of around a dozen vehicles will then be culled further into a list of three finalists in each category after further testing and a subsequent second vote. Voting on the finalists will ensue and the winners will be announced at the Detroit Auto Show in January. As further evidence that the long list is merely a fluid roster of eligible vehicles, the Lexus LS has been added and the Mazda6 and Kia Cadenza have been removed from consideration (the latter vehicles appeared on earlier published lists but won't be available in time for judging). Quick studies will notice that there's been a slight but important change to one of the award's names. Reflecting the market's shift away from body-on-frame trucks to more amorphous sport and crossover utility vehicles, the award formerly known as Truck of the Year will be henceforth known as North American Truck/Utility of the Year. Both traditional body-on-frame vehicles and more car-like crossovers will be considered for this diverse category. Y es que el Gobierno Alemán ha facilitado una ayuda por valor de 43,67 millones de euros para que los chicos de Stuttgart localizaran la producción del nuevo SUV "económico" de la firma de Stuttgart dentro de la propia Alemania. Al parecer, dada la salud económica del Grupo Volkswagen y el valor accionarial tanto de VAG como de Porsche, se podría considerar que esta ayuda no es legítima, distorsionando el mercado automovilístico continental. La Unión se cuestiona si el beneficio local de la zona (creación de puestos de trabajo e inversión) está compensado por esta distorsión de la libre competencia. Porsche se ha apresurado a confirmar que fabricará en Leipzig el Macan, sea cual sea la decisión de la Unión Europea respecto a esta ayuda. Y es normal, pues las obras de construcción de la línea de producción ya han comenzado. Here's the good news: Something definitive has finally been heard from the Indian automaker. Here's the bad news: It's bad news. According to Reuters, Mahindra "recently decided not to proceed further with the project due to changes in the U.S. regulatory and market situation." In other words, the truck we've long been expecting isn't going to happen. That said, "M&M will continue to monitor the U.S. situation and remain flexible with its approach to this market." We won't outline all the sordid details on what happened between Global Vehicles, Mahindra and its would-be dealer base - read all about it on these pages - but suffice it to say delays were felt, feelings were hurt and lawsuits were filed. | Posted: 11 Jul 2012 12:37 PM PDT  El Nissan GT-R GT3 estará en las 24 Horas de Spa Filed under: Nissan, CompeticiónEl GT-R GT3 ya estuvo en las 24 Horas de Dubai este año El año pasado se esperaba que el estreno internacional del Nissan GT-R GT3 tuviera lugar en las 24 Horas de Spa Francorchamps, pero por falta de tiempo los chicos de Nismo y JRM tuvieron que retrasar su carrera inaugural. Pero este 2013 es distinto. Si bien los nipones decidieron no alinear a su mejor máquina de GT en las 24 Horas de Nürburgring por motivos que no tenemos del todo claros (ir con él implicaba ir a ganar, y parece que el coche todavía no da ese nivel), parece que Spa Francorchamps ofrece un desafío menos arriesgado y complicado para Nissan. A bordo del deportivo de motor V6 sobrealimentado y tracción trasera (recuerda que los GT3 tienen prohibido por reglamento ser de tracción integral) estará "nuestro" Lucas Ordoñez acompañando a Alex Buncombe, Jann Mardenborough y Chris Ward, todos ellos pilotos que ya están participando en las Blancpain Endurance Series con este modelo. Nissan tiene puesto el objetivo bien alto para esta prueba, y un podio sería algo a esperar, aunque con McLaren, Audi y BMW con equipos semioficiales pululando por la prueba de los Países Bajos parece que la lucha va a estar complicada.
