Hyundai Elantra subject of class-action lawsuit for 'misleading 40 MPG' ads
Filed under: MPG, Hyundai, Legislation and Policy, USA 'Your mileage may vary.' We're all used to seeing those words at the end of any advertisement that mentions fuel mileage, and we all know what it means: Not all drivers will get exactly the same mileage, and oftentimes what you get will be lower than what it says on the car's window sticker. That explanation may not hold water with Louis Bird of Sacramento, California, owner of a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. "I feel like Hyundai took advantage of me. Hyundai's advertisements about the '40 MPG' gas mileage of the Elantra instantly caught my attention. I bought the car thinking I would be seeing major savings at the pump and getting over 500 miles per tank, but Hyundai fooled me... I have not saved any money on gas and have been driving the Elantra for well over a year now. It is frustrating and disappointing. I never would have bought the Elantra in the first place if I hadn't seen Hyundai's ads boasting about gas mileage." Bird is representing consumers in a class-action lawsuit in California that "seeks to stop Hyundai from illegally using gas mileage numbers in its advertising of the Elantra without government-mandated disclosures." Naturally, damages are being sought for owners of 2011 and 2012 Elantra models. As you can see above, the 2013 Elantra is still advertised with a 40-mpg rating on the highway. From what we can tell, Consumer Watchdog, the organization that brought the lawsuit, is alleging that Hyundai failed to "disclose certain information when mileage estimates [were] provided in their advertisements," thereby deceiving consumers into thinking the Elantra would provide better mileage than its competitors.Scroll down for the press release from Consumer Watchdog and a response we received from the automaker. We've also included some video advertisements for the Elantra. So far, we've been unable to find any ourselves that don't include the expected asterisks and disclaimers, and Hyundai says it has "reviewed [its] ads and think Consumer Watchdog and their client are dead wrong."Continue reading Hyundai Elantra subject of class-action lawsuit for 'misleading 40 MPG' adsHyundai Elantra subject of class-action lawsuit for 'misleading 40 MPG' ads originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 20:00:00 EST. Video: Japanese CEO busted for posting speeding Lambo vid on YouTube [w/video]
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Government/Legal, Japan, Safety, Videos, Lamborghini Technology is making it harder and harder to get away with being an idiot. Just ask one Japanese executive. Mikami Tadao, the 38-year-old president of a manufacturing company based in Hiroshima who recently found himself behind bars for grossly exceeding the speed limit in his Lamborghini Gallardo two years ago. Tadao reportedly took his exotic through a local tunnel at around 97 miles per hour, which is around 60 mph over the posted speed limit. Odds are he would have gotten away with the stunt were it not for the fact that he recorded the antics for posterity and uploaded the clip to YouTube. Hiroshima police arrested Tadao for the offense, and he now faces a slew of traffic violations. Officers have also seized his personal computer along with the videos he's taken. Tadao reportedly wrote in the video description that he wanted to enjoy the sense of speed and the sound of the Gallardo in the tunnel. Something tells us he'll grow to hate that cacophony when prosecutors play the clip in court. Check out the video for yourself below.Continue reading Japanese CEO busted for posting speeding Lambo vid on YouTube [w/video]Japanese CEO busted for posting speeding Lambo vid on YouTube [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 20:00:00 EST. Report: Subaru BRZ gets early sales incentives as cheaper Scion FRS outsells it
Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Subaru If you've tried to weasel your way into a Subaru BRZ for a test drive lately, you likely know just how hard it is to get your hands on one of the machines. The rear-wheel-drive coupes are flying off of dealer lots as quickly as they arrive, but according to USA Today, a spot of sibling rivalry has pushed Subaru to offer a small incentive on the BRZ already. Customers are already ponying up an average of $29,085 for each BRZ model sold. Compare that to the $25,653 average transaction price for the virtually-identical Scion FR-S, and you can see why Subaru offered a $400 incentive on the BRZ in June. The FR-S, meanwhile, moved with no cash on the hood. The two companies have very different approaches to selling the cars, however. Scion offers the FR-S in one standard trim in either manual or automatic guise, while Subaru offers two trims. The more expensive of those includes niceties like leather seating, automatic climate control and a proximity key, but compare base model to base model and the Subaru is $1,315 more than its Scion twin. According to USA Today, Scion sold 2,684 FR-S models across 1,000 dealers in the U.S. last month. By comparison, Subaru sold 818 BRZ units over the company's 600 dealers.Subaru BRZ gets early sales incentives as cheaper Scion FRS outsells it originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 19:27:00 EST. Report: $30 million Ferrari 250 GTO crashed on 50th anniversary tour
Filed under: Classics, Ferrari It often seems that cars worth millions of dollars are kept under lock and key in climate-controlled garages, never to see the open road. Christopher Cox's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is not one of the those cars. The American investor drives the car, one of just 39 built, regularly and has participated in numerous events around the world since he purchased it in 2005. In fact, we've seen the brightly colored 250 GTO, worth an estimated $30+ million, in person no less than five times including last summer in Monterey where it was entered in the Pebble Beach Tour and Concours d'Elegance. Of course, driving a car always comes with the chance of an accident, and unfortunately that's just what happened when Cox recently had the 250 GTO out on track as part of the model's 50th anniversary tour in France last week. Details of the extent of the accident are scarce, but the off-track excursion at the Reims-Gueux race track was bad enough that his wife broke her leg on impact. We wish a speedy recovery to both Christopher and his wife, and we're sure the car will up and running in no time. Hopefully we'll see it back in action in the near future. You can see our photos of Cox's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at various events in the gallery below.$30 million Ferrari 250 GTO crashed on 50th anniversary tour originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 19:00:00 EST. Couple buys 3,333 socks, gets free Fiat 500
Filed under: Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Hatchback, Design/Style, Fiat For most of us, a mismatched sock is not something to be celebrated, but then most of us are not pre-teen girls. While we were admittedly unaware that the Punky Brewster look is back in favor among stylish kids, fashion company LittleMissMatched got our attention with its latest promotion: Giving away a Fiat 500 to anyone crazy enough to buy 1,111 "pairs" of socks. LittleMissMatched sells its footwear three to a pack - with none of the three having identical patterns - so the couple from Seattle who acquired the Fiat actually bought 3,333 socks. Their $15,000 purchase price was a reasonable deal for the "free" 500 Pop itself, even before you consider that the car was packed almost full of colorful socks. See just how many socks will fit in a Fiat in our gallery.Couple buys 3,333 socks, gets free Fiat 500 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 18:01:00 EST. Nuevo Subaru Sambar pick up, enano pero práctico
Continue reading Nuevo Subaru Sambar pick up, enano pero prácticoNuevo Subaru Sambar pick up, enano pero práctico originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 17:59:00 EST. U.S. fleetwide fuel economy falls for third straight month
Filed under: MPG, North America, USA Go figure. That's all we can say to reports that U.S. fleetwide fuel economy in June fell for the third straight month, despite the fact that hybrid and alt-fuel vehicle sales are about double what they were a year earlier. Fleetwide fuel efficiency last month fell to an even 23 miles per gallon from 23.2 in May and from 23.3 mpg in April, TrueCar reported. Those numbers are consistent with the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute's (UMTRI) figures, which show June's Corporate Average Fuel Economy also dropping for the third straight month to 29 miles per gallon. TrueCar blames what it calls an "unseasonable drop" in gas prices, which apparently caused consumers to buy more trucks and other big-engined vehicles. Average gas prices in the U.S. fell about 15 cents during the month to about $3.35 a gallon as of July 1, according to AAA. The good news is that fuel-efficiency numbers are still ahead of year-earlier figures. TrueCar has average fuel economy up 6.5 percent from a year earlier, while UMTRI reports a 3.9 percent rise in fuel economy.U.S. fleetwide fuel economy falls for third straight month originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 17:57:00 EST. Video: Why are these new Skoda models getting crushed?
Filed under: Etc., Europe, Safety, Videos, Skoda The massive number of safety devices, explosives, electronics and construction materials in modern cars means that extricating someone from a wrecked vehicle is no longer just a matter of a Sawzall and twelve minutes. Carmakers work with first responders so that the men and women who save lives can actually figure out how to get to the lives in question without doing further damage to the people inside or themselves. And that's apparently what's happening in the three videos below: Škoda gave rescuers in the Czech Republic a Superb, Octavia and Yeti to practice on, and the fire team used some heavy machinery to bash things up a bit before getting to work. We're not clear why they needed new models to practice on, so we're hoping that these cars were preproduction non-VIN vehicles that were destined for the crusher anyhow. The video isn't revelatory, it's just a behind-the-scenes look at how the people who help you help themselves first. You can watch it all in the videos below.Continue reading Why are these new Skoda models getting crushed? Why are these new Skoda models getting crushed? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 16:57:00 EST. Official: Pics Aplenty: More Fiat 500L images, details divulged
Filed under: Budget, Europe, Crossover, Fiat After first revealing its new baby at the Geneva Motor Show in March, Fiat has finally served up more information and images on its upcoming 500L. Spanning 13.6 feet from tip to tail, the Italian automaker says there's room for five full-grown adults inside along with room for their luggage, thanks in part to a rear bench that can slide fore and aft as need be. All told, there's a bit more than 14.1 cubic feet of cargo area out back, which bests the Mini Countryman by nearly two cubic feet. With the second row seats stowed and the front passenger seat folded forward, the 500L can also transport material just shy of eight-feet long. In Europe, buyers will be able to chose between two gasoline engine options: a turbocharged 0.9-liter two-cylinder good for 105 horsepower or a 95-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder. An 85-horsepower 1.3-liter turbodiesel will also be available. Later, Fiat plans to introduce a version of the two-cylinder designed to run on methane. The Fiat 500L will be produced in Serbia and will be available with options including UConnect with a five-inch screen, a glass roof that covers five square feet and 11 different body colors. No word yet on a U.S. on-sale date, but we do expect the plus-sized Cinquecento to make it to our market, awkward looks and all. ZF boss says transmission gear count one-upsmanship nearing end
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Etc., MPG Remember the Powerglide? An automatic with two forward speeds, it's almost inconceivable today that such a transmission was ever state of the art. Why, we've heard plenty of grumbling from the peanut gallery about Honda and its continued widespread use of a five-speed automatic when most of the rest of the world is offering six speeds. And then there are those carmakers engaging in the mine-is-bigger-than-yours battle of transmissions that resulted in eight-speed automatics in cars like the Chrysler 300 and Hyundai Genesis pictured above. German transmission supplier ZF has a nine-speed automatic that will be introduced next year, and reports have said Hyundai is looking to pack ten forward gears into a forthcoming gearbox. What's next? Cars with as many gears as mountain bikes? That's unlikely, says ZF North American president Julio Caspari, who tells Automotive News that the gear race is "close to the limit." AN says Caspari thinks marketing may be a bigger factor than engineering when it comes to developing transmissions with additional gears, citing just an 11-percent difference between the best transmissions today and a theoretically perfect unit. Caspari questions the cost-effectiveness of building a so-called "perfect" transmission, saying that further friction reduction would require expensive materials, like ceramic ball bearings.ZF boss says transmission gear count one-upsmanship nearing end originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 15:58:00 EST.
