Posted: 07 Jul 2012 05:34 PM PDT ![]() Video: Watch Hedman Headers build a manifold from start to finish Filed under: Aftermarket, Performance, Etc., Videos There's something mesmerizing about The Discovery Channel's How It's Made series. While we couldn't care less about the intricacies of paperclip production, watching the various machines and processes interact is the stuff lazy Saturday afternoons are made of. Hedman Headers has cribbed that successful formula with a new video that lets you follow a set of headers as they make their way from plain tube steel to performance hardware. The company uses computer-controlled machinery to precisely bend the pipes before handing them over to master welders, and those guys hand-stitch the various pieces into the work of art you see above. Each part is test fitted against existing jigs to maintain quality control throughout the assembly process, and the final pieces are either sprayed black for shipping or doused in a special ceramic coating to resist oxidization. Very cool. Check out the video below to see what we mean.Continue reading Watch Hedman Headers build a manifold from start to finishWatch Hedman Headers build a manifold from start to finish originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 Jul 2012 20:01:00 EST. Posted: 07 Jul 2012 02:42 PM PDT ![]() Report: Navsop working on coin-sized GPS rival that navigates using wifi and TV signals Filed under: Technology A British company is working on a new navigation system that doesn't rely on GPS satellites to track your location. BAE has created Navsop, a device that picks up errant cell phone, radio and television signals to deduce your coordinates, which means it can be used in locations where traditional GPS can't. For example, TV signals are substantially more powerful in buildings and below ground than GPS, which means Navsop could eventually help locate individuals in collapsed buildings or mines. It could also be instrumental in locating stolen vehicles stashed in underground parking garages. BAE claims that while Navsop is still in the early stages of development, it will eventually fit into a gadget about the size of a standard coin. At present, however, Navsop resides in a massive box that must be lugged around in a car and attached to a whip antenna. Not exactly smartphone compatible. Navsop isn't entirely independent from GPS, however. The system must first get its bearings from the satellites in the sky before turning to radio signals.Navsop working on coin-sized GPS rival that navigates using wifi and TV signals originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 Jul 2012 17:33:00 EST. Posted: 07 Jul 2012 02:09 PM PDT ![]() EVs do more environmental harm than good, author argues Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Manufacturing/Plants, Transportation Alternatives, Legislation and Policy, North America, USAWell, here's one guy who might not win too many popularity contests around the People's Republic of Berkeley. A visiting scholar at U.C. Berkeley has published a book that argues that electric vehicles hurt the environment more than they help it and that EVs are more of a marketing symbol than a way to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Wired reported.Author Ozzie Zehner, who titled his book "Green Illusions: The Dirty Secrets of Clean Energy and the Future of Environmentalism," writes that the production of the copper, aluminum and rare-earth metals required to make an EV and its motor's magnets create more pollution than what would be saved after those cars hit the road, according to the publication. Zehner, a former General Motors employee, also argues that EV prices aren't likely to fall much further because the technological advances related to their production have already been achieved. The book casts a vote for public-transportation improvements as a better way for governments to help the environment than funding electric-drive technology. Naturally, people such as author Nick Chambers and Green Car Reports editor John Voelcker took issue with Zehner's arguments, Wired reported. Among other points, both Chambers and Voelcker predicted further substantial drops in battery-pack prices, while Voelcker said that much research is being conducted on using non-rare-earth metals in electric motors, which would further cause the environmental impact of making an EV to drop.EVs do more environmental harm than good, author argues originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 07 Jul 2012 16:55:00 EST. Posted: 07 Jul 2012 12:32 PM PDT ![]() Auctions: Gooding hoping for new world record with 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K von Krieger Special Roadster Filed under: Classics, Auctions, Mercedes-Benz Last year, Gooding & Company smashed the record for the highest amount paid for a car at auction when the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR Prototype sold for $16.39 million at Pebble Beach. Now the auction house looks to break that record with an ultra-rare 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K von Krieger Special Roadster. Called "the most exciting pre-war Mercedes-Benz I've ever known" by David Gooding, the auction company's founder, the unique 540K Special Roadster was originally built for the royal Prussian family in 1936. In 1942 the car was shipped to Switzerland by Baroness Gisela von Krieger to avoid the perils of WWII, after which it followed her to the United States where she drove it around Greenwhich, CT. The Baroness later moved back to Switzerland and left the roadster behind, where it sat in a garage for more than forty years. The car's current owner has restored it to concours condition, finished in black and chrome with a Cognac leather interior. While Gooding & Company won't release an official estimate, it's confident the car will break the record amount paid for a Mercedes-Benz, set last year at RM's Monterey auction, and quite possibly the overall record set at the aforementioned 2011 Gooding auction at Pebble Beach. You can read more about the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K von Krieger Special Roadster in Gooding's press release below, and look out for live results from all the Monterey auctions come August.Continue reading Gooding hoping for new world record with 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K von Krieger Special RoadsterGooding hoping for new world record with 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K von Krieger Special Roadster originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 Jul 2012 15:03:00 EST.
