Posted: 06 Jul 2012 05:18 PM PDT ![]() Video: Henrik Fisker, what are you drawing? Filed under: Hybrid, Videos, Fisker, Design/Style, Electric "Cars have become an appliance... And on top of that, you start feeling a bit guilty about driving a car, because it pollutes, you use a lot of gasoline." These are the words of Henrik Fisker, car designer and the man who startes his own automobile company which currently builds and sells the extended-range electric Karma sedan. "Why do electric cars, or small fuel-efficient cars, always have to look dorky? Why can't we make a beautiful, gorgeous car?" Well, if you're the man who penned the BMW Z8 and a couple of show-stopping Aston Martin coupes, you don't have to design a dorky EV. Which explains the sleek lines of the aforementioned Karma and upcoming Fisker Atlantic. Will Fisker ultimately succeed in establishing a viable automaker that continues to build cars well into the future? Only time will tell. Either way, we have to admire Henrik's bravado. "The doubters out there, they are rarely the builders. And those who are the skeptics, are never really the inventors... There are a lot of us out there who believe that dreams are possible." Those parting words are spoken as Henrik Fisker lays out what appears to be a two-door sports car with a low-slung profile that would seemingly mesh quite well with the rest of Fisker's slinky but eco-conscious machinery. Scroll down below to watch the video, which was shot during his TED talk at Chapman University.Continue reading Henrik Fisker, what are you drawing?Henrik Fisker, what are you drawing? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 19:58:00 EST. Posted: 06 Jul 2012 05:18 PM PDT ![]() BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is an efficient use of 340 hp Filed under: Hybrid, MPG, BMW We've learned to expect that hybrid vehicles will produce lower emissions and fuel-consumption scores than their standard gasoline-burning siblings. What we generally don't expect, however, is for that same hybrid to be quicker to 60 than its turbocharged brother or for it to make more overall horsepower. Such is the case with the BMW ActiveHybrid 3, which offers up 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque from its 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six and electric motor combination - useful gains from the 300 hp and 300 lb-ft in the 335i. Those added ponies allow the Hybrid 3 to hit 62 miles per hour in just 5.3 seconds, a .2-second improvement, according to the automaker, over the thirstier 335i.BMW says the Hybrid 3 can travel up to 2.5 miles on electricity alone at speeds of up to 46 miles per hour, though not at the same time, of course, and fuel efficiency of about 40 miles per gallon on the EU test cycle. Expect the U.S. EPA figure to vary from that figure. A lithium ion battery pack resides in the trunk, and it's made up of 96 individual cells with a rated output of 675 Wh. Power is sent to the rear wheels from the dual drivetrain through an eight-speed automatic gearbox that shares its outer casing with the 55-hp electric motor. Naturally, there's a rather prominent badge on the C-pillar displaying the car's fuel-saving credentials, as you can see in our image gallery above. Full details can be found in the press release below, but there's still no word on when we can expect to see the ActiveHybrid 3 in the States or what it may cost if and when it arrives.Continue reading BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is an efficient use of 340 hpBMW ActiveHybrid 3 is an efficient use of 340 hp originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 19:45:00 EST. Posted: 06 Jul 2012 04:40 PM PDT ![]() Report: Convertibles are down, but are they on the way out? Filed under: Car Buying, Convertible Automakers just reported their most recent sales numbers, with things looking up virtually across the board. Despite that, and despite the fact that it's summer, sales of that quintessential warm-weather car, the convertible, are down. Droptops normally account for two percent of the overall car market, but that tumbled to just above one percent in 2011. What happened to bring down the car that was once a symbol of hedonistic driving freedom out on the open road? According to Smart Money Magazine, cost is a big factor. There's always been a price premium for convertibles, but that gulf has widened over the years, and it's not like there's very many affordable conertibles in the first place. Age is another reason. While Baby Boomers still like covertibles, their kids, Generation X and Y, seem ambivalent. Compounding those factors is a sluggish economy that has buyers focused more on practical cars that don't break the bank than splurging on some kind of roadgoing confection. We might also suggest that given the frosty global economy, we're also seeing fewer new convertible models go on sale in volume segments (exotics seem to be immune to this trend). And since convertibles, like coupes, tend to have particularly short sales lives, we're not terribly surprised to learn that sales are down. But it could be a vicious cycle - there less demand for a bodystyle that's not as popular as it once was, and those models that remain tend to be pricey. That doesn't mean that the convertible is dead - that rumor has failed to stick in the past - but it does suggest that automakers are likely to stare even longer at the beans they are counting when figuring out whether there's a business case for a new convertible.Convertibles are down, but are they on the way out? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 19:15:00 EST. Posted: 06 Jul 2012 03:01 PM PDT ![]() Exclusive: Mini still mulling diesel model for U.S. Filed under: Hatchback, Mini, Diesel Patrick McKenna, head of Mini's U.S. product strategy, said Thursday during the automaker's Mini Takes The States road rally that the brand is still considering building a diesel model for U.S. customers, but that it has not reached a final decision. The problem for Mini is apparently deciding if a diesel version will simply divert customers who would have otherwise bought a gas version of the compact car rather than attract new green customers who want to have performance and high fuel economy numbers. Meanwhile, Mini continues to develop its new gas engines for the next generation models, which McKenna said has produced good results. He declined to give specifics on the engines, only saying that some engines have shown more power than current engines with better fuel economy numbers. "We have seen such great results with our new three-cylinder and four-cylinder engines, it's difficult to decide if we need to have a diesel engine here," McKenna told Autoblog. "It's a great problem to have." Diesel owners would likely fit right in with some of the brand's more enthusiastic regular customers. With their devotion to all things Mini, these folks have proven themselves zealous owners during our time on the first two days of the 11-day Mini Takes The States rally. But Mini remains unsure if bringing diesel to the U.S. would be the best use of its limited resources. If they do push forward with an oil burning offering, we suspect it would be on one of its larger, pricier models like the Countryman crossover, which has a higher MSRP that would likely do the best job of absorbing diesel's extra cost while returning the most meaningful mileage improvements.Mini still mulling diesel model for U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 17:46:00 EST. Created in conjunction with Skip Barber, owner of the infamous New England circuit, this M3 features the best of BMW's performance catalog (though no additional power is on tap), making this coupe even more hardcore and better-poised than before. The changes start with the exterior, where BMW has painted the two-door M3 in Fire Orange and added a carbon fiber roof panel, lightweight exhaust muffler and carbon fiber aero kits at the front and rear. The M3 Competition Package is also standard on this car, offering slightly more aggressive suspension geometry, and inside, black and anthracite cloth seats are lined with Nappa leather trim and a new flat-bottom steering wheel has been fitted. No changes have been made to the M3's revvy 4.0-liter V8, which produces 414 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. All Lime Rock Edition models are mated to BMW's six-speed manual transmission. Only 200 of the orange M3s will be produced, priced from $70,995 (including $895 for destination), with the first deliveries taking place in September.
