Así vimos ayer al 500L en su versión "todoterrenizada". En la noche del lunes, durante la rueda de prensa de la presentación internacional del modelo (más sobre esto en unas horas), los italianos de Fiat decidieron mostrar el coche durante escasos segundos, mezclado con un fogonazo de luz. Nos pilló a todos los periodistas tan despistados que no pudimos capturarlo en fotografía. Ayer se repetía la presentación sólo para los medios italianos, y antes de que esta arrancara, mientras los españoles todavía pululábamos por allí, decidieron volver a ensayar la presentación, descubriendo de nuevo el coche. ¿Resultado? Avisamos a un compañero italiano y logramos una instantánea. Se corrió el rumor entre los periodistas, y Omniauto.it grabó directamente el coche en vídeo. No sólo eso. Durante las pruebas dinámicas del 500L por Turín, además, nos encontramos por la autopista a dos prototipos del 500L SUV rodando con bastante camuflaje. Y claro, cámara en mano tampoco perdimos la oportunidad de capturarlo para que lo disfrutes. El coche muestra diferencias más allá de los típicos paragolpes con partes no pintadas, y pasos de rueda incrementados y protegidos. La línea de las puertas es distinta, la caída del pilar C también es completamente diferente (aquí no hay techo flotante como en el 500L "normal"), y los grupos ópticos posteriores son más rectangulares y similares al 500 pequeño. The BMW E30 is a car that probably inspired an order of magnitude more stories than it ever spurred buyers. That's not because the quintessential 1980s 3 Series was uninspiring, rather the opposite. For every person able to cough up the money for a 325, there were dozens with pockets too empty to take ownership of this aspirational European standard-setter. David Duran was one such aspirational kid in 1987 when his BMW 325 was built, not even yet old enough to drive. General Motors' Chevy division sold 1,760 Volts in June, more than triple the 535 Leafs sold last month. June represented the second-best month ever for the Volt, which moved a monthly record 2,289 in March. For the year, the Volt has sold 8,817 units, meaning that the model in six months has surpassed last year's total with more than 1,100 vehicles to spare. As for the Leaf, Nissan has said all along that both deliveries and sales would pick up once U.S. production started up at the Japanese automaker's Tennessee plant later this year. Still, the sales pattern for the Leaf is disconcerting. While June marked a 4.9-percent uptick from May, it also represented a 69-percent plunge from year-earlier sales. The 414-horsepower crossover surprises not only with its sky-high asking price of €120,000 (circa $155k USD), but also with a remarkably exciting soundtrack. Pushing the button adjacent to the ashtray triggers a Mr. Hyde routine on the exhaust note, turning the rich baritone burble from intimidation to deepest fear. The automaker accidentally put up a few images and details about the upcoming CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake on its German consumer site, and our friends at Car and Driver gleaned what they could before all the information disappeared again. Word has it the longroof will make use of the same twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 found behind the headlights of the four-door variant. That means buyers will get to enjoy 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Should those numbers be to skinny, Mercedes-Benz will also offer a performance pack that nudges the figures toward 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed Speedshift automatic transmission will handle gear swapping duties, though the traditional torque converter has been scrapped in favor of a computer-controlled clutch. As magical as all that sounds, there's still little chance we'll see the machine on our shores. Mercedes-Benz has made it clear the standard CLS Shooting Brake is not meant for U.S. buyers, so it follows the CLS63 AMG will remain similarly forbidden. What a shame. First introduced at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show in February, Kia has just announced that its 2013 Optima SX Limited will wear a $35,275 MSRP (*including delivery) price tag. Carspotters will note the SX Limited's more aggressive front and rear bumper treatments (shared with the SX), as well as a chrome-highlighted decklid spoiler and 18-inch chrome alloys shrouding red-painted brake calipers. Power folding side mirrors mittened in chrome (not shown above) will also add to the brightwork count. Performance-wise, there's little to differentiate this top-shelf Optima from lesser turbocharged models (the SXL is powered exclusively by Kia's 2.0-liter turbo four giving 274 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque). Inside, the daddy of all Optimas is loaded to its unique black tricot headliner with equipment, packing everything from heated front and rear Nappa leather seats (the fronts are cooled as well) to wood trim. En Italia los precios del nuevo integrante arrancarán en los 15.550 € para el 1.4i 16v 100 CV con acabado Pop. Continuando con la oferta italiana, los interesados podrán elegir entre otras dos variantes mecánicas más, un 0.9 TwinAir con 105 CV y el diésel de 1,3 litros y 95 CV. En ambos casos será de serie el sistema Stop&Start y destacarán por sus bajos consumos. En cuanto al equipamiento, la oferta se estructura en los acabados Pop, Pop Star, Easy y Lounge. But the Evora 414E has two and a half times that amount! The acceleration sensation is almost indescribable, the surge of torque is like an ocean wave!" So says Simon Corbett, Principal Vehicle Dynamics Test and Development Engineer at Lotus Engineering. Indescribable as it may be, here are some specs: 738 pound-feet of torque (1,000 newton meters), 0-60 in four seconds and a target of 55 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Making all that possible are two electric motors (one for each rear wheel), a 17 kilowatt-hour lithium polymer battery pack and an alcohol-fueled three-cylinder engine that kicks in when called upon (for instance, after 30 miles of electric-only driving) to recharge the onboard battery. Total range with a topped-up fuel tank and battery is estimated at 300 miles. Only Jaguar and Mitsubishi reported selling fewer vehicles last month than the year before. Of course, many brands just barely squeaked out a positive number, and six switch from green to red cells in our table below when comparing their daily average sales rates (there were 27 selling days in June 2012 versus 26 in June 2011) instead of raw volume. The big story this month that will likely continue through the summer is the rebound performances of both Toyota and Honda. Toyota Motor Company was up a full 60.27 percent, followed by American Honda with a 48.77-percent increase. The next closest automaker was Nissan North America with a gain of 28.21 percent, followed closely by Chrysler Group at 20.28 percent, General Motors at 15.51 percent and Ford at 7.03 percent. Japanese automakers, particularly Toyota and Honda, have largely restored their production capacity from last summer's crippling Japanese earthquakes and tsunamis. That will be reflected going forward in larger than normal monthly sales gains compared to the rest of the industry. Además de una menor dotación de serie, las nuevas versiones básicas están dotadas de un motor diésel descafeinado, con 144 CV y un par máximo de 350 Nm. We say "rumor" because this news apparently hasn't been independently confirmed yet, but at Napierville Dragway in Quebec, Canada, the funny car you see above ran 6.75 at 206 mph. Should it be verified, it will be the new world record benchmark. Brent Rau in a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse is considered to hold the current record, and although his time differs depending on where you look, the Ecotec-powered runner beats it by at least seven-tenths of a second. There's also a dragster with a Volkswagen engine that's supposedly done 6.53, but it's got a top-fuel-style body.
