| Posted: 05 Jul 2012 12:45 AM PDT  Desarrollan unos faros inteligentes que "ocultan" las gotas de lluvia evitando iluminarlas Filed under: Tecnología Investigadores de la Universidad Carnegie Mellon, en Pittsburgh, EEUU, han desarrollado un prototipo de faro para automóvil capaz de ocultar las cegadoras gotas de agua o los copos de nieve de una tormenta para mejorar la visión de los conductores en hasta un 90% a 4 metros de distancia. Su funcionamiento es increíblemente sencillo: dado que en sí misma no es el agua lo bloquea la visión, sino el reflejo de luz, estos grupos ópticos iluminan todo el horizonte menos las partículas en cuestión. Utilizando un proyector DLP Viewsonic corriente y moliente, un PC con un procesador i7 quad core y una microcámara GigE Point Grey Flea3, el prototipo predice la trayectoria de las gotas de agua para, con la ayuda de un divisor de haz, evitar que los faros las iluminen. El resultado es un importante incremento en la visibilidad de la carretera; a efectos prácticos, casi como si la lluvia desapareciera por arte de magia. El prototipo actual es capaz de funcionar a una velocidad de 13 milisegundos, pero sus responsables afirman que de ser instalado en un coche real y en medio de una fuerte tormenta, haría falta multiplicar por diez su velocidad de respuesta para dejar pasar el 90% de la luz circulando a 30 km/h. To us, the vehicle shown here (reportedly shown as a teaser to a pool of assembled journalists) looks to have opaque windows which could indicate that it's a non-rolling prototype, possibly without an interior.CarsUK guesses it's based on the 500L, suggesting the same 1.4-liter gasoline and 1.3-liter diesel engines will be available. It also makes sense to expect a better look and more details on the 500X that will presumably be released at the Paris Motor Show this September. The vehicle looks somewhat similar to the already-shown 500L, but its raised ride height, trim-free doors, rounded wheel arches and matte lower trim improve the look greatly in our opinion. The best part? It doesn't have the 500L's awkward wraparound windshield or its ungainly greenhouse and stepped roof. The faster rear windscreen angle and different lighting looks much cleaner, too. Without citing a source, Indian Cars Bikes maintains the 500X is just over 13 feet long and will be available with all-wheel drive with production starting in late 2013. Cars.com has released its American-Made Index, proclaiming that four out of the top five American-made vehicles are Japanese brands. The Toyota Camry, built in Kentucky, was ranked the most American vehicle sold today, with the Michigan-built Ford F-150 coming in as the second-most American vehicle. The Honda Accord, Toyota Sienna and Honda Pilot round out the top five. And yes, all of these models are available in red, white or blue. Cars.com's criteria for selecting the most American vehicle includes sales volume, percentage of American sourced parts and where the vehicle is assembled. Vehicles must have at least 75 percent domestic parts to even qualify for the list, which kept the F-150 off last year. However, the accounting system devised by Cars.com was called "flawed" by the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents Detroit's car makers in Washington D.C. "The truth is: Three of the 16 major automakers doing business in the U.S. - Chrysler, Ford and GM - produce more than half the cars assembled here, use twice as many U.S. parts per vehicle than their competitors, are headquartered in the U.S. and employ two-thirds of America's autoworkers," said former Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, current president of the AAPC. At least, for now. Optimal Energy, which first trotted out its Keith Helfet-designed Joule at the 2008 Paris Motor Show has announced that it is shutting down. Though it was originally expected to go on sale in 2010, plans were delayed by the world financial mess that made capital hard to come by. Production was then supposed to go ahead by 2014, but, after being unable to work out a R7 billion ($857.8 million at today's rates) deal with government agencies, that has also become impossible. More recently, Optimal has shifted its focus, with a proposal to use the technology it had developed into producing an electric bus. Sadly, that project would have also relied on government help to get started and, in the end, was deemed too risky. While CEO Kobus Meiring is saddened by the loss of his company, he still sees electric vehicles as having a bright future. En el salón de Fráncfort de 2007 se presentó un pequeño deportivo biplaza con motor central, el Artega GT. Creado por el magnate Klaus Dieter Frers (dueño del fabricante de componentes para la automoción Paragon) y diseñado por Henrik Fisker (Aston Martin DB9, BMW Z8), este deportivo se presentaba como un rival para el Porsche Cayman montado con piezas de origen VW (motor V6 de 300 CV y cambio DSG). Los pocos afortunados que han podido probarlo hablan maravillas del coche, pero por desgracia, sus ventas nunca han despegado y Artega ha entrado en bancarrota. Ya en los diferentes salones, como el de Ginebra en el pasado mes de marzo, las noticias que llegaban de Artega no eran muy alentadoras. Se presentó una versión eléctrica SE (2011) y apareció la opción de un techo solar integral (2012), pero nunca nos hablaban de ventas de manera muy concreta. The new car has been given gifts from every department: it's lost 220 pounds, its design showcases the French marque's new corporate identity, under the hood it gets new engines (including the company's first three-cylinder), a dual-clutch transmission, and infotainment moves on a step with the customizable R-Link touchscreen system and R-Link app store. This Clio will only come as a five-door hatch, but it offers a serious amount of personalization options inside and out to separate each car from what will likely be a very large herd. In addition to the contrasting colors available on everything from the grille insert to the steering wheel, the R-Link home screen can be arranged according to user preference, and the app R-Link ecosystem is being encouraged by Renault's appeals to developer talent and startups. There's also the slightly gimmicky R-Sound Effect, which can pipe "six different engine sound profiles" into the cabin when you tire of the natural, small-displacement exhaust note. More substantive developments are found under the hood, in the form of an available three-cylinder turbocharged, 0.9-liter TCe 90 gas engine with 90 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque. Other engine choices include a 1.2-liter TCe 120 gas with 120 horsepower and the 1.5-liter dCi 90 diesel with 90 hp and 162 lb-ft. The latter two powerplants will be paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The new Clio will go on sale early next year.
