Watch this Nissan Leaf set a record up Goodwood... backwards
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Europe/EU, UK, Racing, Videos There's more than one way to set a record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Just ask Nissan. The automaker took to the hill climb this year with the lowly Nissan Leaf and actually managed to capture a spot in the record books with a unique stunt. Terry Grant jumped behind the wheel of the EV for a sprint up the course in reverse. Surprisingly enough, Grant kept the battery-powered hatchback pointed in the correct direction, and even managed to snag an impressive time of just 1 minuted and 57 seconds from the start line to the checkered flag. Of course, the Leaf required a little bit of modification in order to pull off the feat. Engineers removed the reverse speed limiter, allowing the vehicle to theoretically travel as fast in reverse as it does going forward. Looks like fun, but something tells us it couldn't hold a candle to the Lincoln Town Car that showed up in the Car and Driver backwards lap competition. Check out a few videos of the run below.Continue reading Watch this Nissan Leaf set a record up Goodwood... backwardsWatch this Nissan Leaf set a record up Goodwood... backwards originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 19:58:00 EST. Motorsports: X Games 18 RallyCross [w/videos] [spoilers]
Filed under: Motorsports RallyCross is quickly becoming one of the X Games' most exciting events, with many of the most popular athletes flocking to four wheels in the past few years. For X Games 18 this past weekend, the lineup of drivers was the most impressive yet, with eight-time WRC champion Sebastien Loeb accepting Travis Pastrana's challenge to take on the rest of the field, not to mention European RallyCross champion Sverre Isachsen and skateboarder Bucky Lasek bolstering team Subaru. Despite never having raced in X Games, let alone anywhere in North America, Loeb was undoubtedly the favorite going into the event. Yes, his specially built Citroën DS3 has significantly more horsepower than his standard rally car, but Loeb has also proven he is incredibly fast no matter what he is driving. The rest of the X Games field was full of experienced and capable drivers including two-time WRC champion Marcus Grönholm, Tanner Foust, Liam Doran and Rhys Millen. It's also hard to count out Brian Deegan, last year's gold medalist, and the always-entertaining Ken Block. Could Sebastien Loeb translate his WRC success into inaugural X Games success, or did one of the other RallyCross drivers beat out the venerable Frenchman? Scroll down to find out.Continue reading X Games 18 RallyCross [w/videos] [spoilers]X Games 18 RallyCross [w/videos] [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 19:57:00 EST. Report: Michigan to fight drunk driving with... talking urinal cakes?! [w/video]
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Safety, Videos "Don't drive drunk." That's the message every government, charity and local organization wants to get out during the Fourth of July holiday. It's sound advice, too, even from a potty mouth. According to The Detroit News, the state of Michigan has bought 400 talking urinal cakes that will remind men that if they've had a few drinks, they shouldn't drive. "Listen up. That's right, I'm talking to you. Had a few drinks? Maybe a few too many?" the urinal cake says after being activated by a tiny motion sensor in it. "Then do yourself and everyone else a favor: Call a sober friend or a cab. Oh, and don't forget to wash your hands." The brainchild of the Maryland-based Wizmark, which has broken new ground with its electronic urinal advertising devices, the $21 talking cake is part of a bigger campaign to promote safe holiday driving.Scroll down to check out the lecturing urinal cake in action.Continue reading Michigan to fight drunk driving with... talking urinal cakes?!
Tata works with French company on sub-$20,000 EV
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, India, Tata Yes, the car will still cost less than $20,000. No, we still don't know when it's coming out. India-based Tata Motors is working with France-based Dassualt Systems at developing more technology for the eMO ("electric mobility") electric vehicle that's so far only appeared in concept form, the Hindu Business Line reported. The two companies are working on design touches that will keep both the cost and weight of the vehicle as low as possible in order to reach the goal of selling a vehicle with a 100-mile single-charge range for less than $20,000, according to the publication. But there's still no word on how much Tata's investing or when a production model will see the light of day. Tata Technologies' President of Vehicle Programs and Development Kevin Fisher, speaking at the North American Auto Show in Detroit in January, called the eMO "a giant business card" that the automaker was using to pitch its new technologies, though he wasn't specific on if or when the car would be made. Tata has said the eMO's 18.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack can provide as many as 100 miles on a single charge. The car's design aspects include "suicide" rear doors and no B-pillar to allow for a larger opening, which will make up for the fact that the car will have no rear hatch. Tata, which acquired Jaguar Land Rover from Ford for $2.3 billion four years ago, continues to show signs of entering the electric-drive vehicle market. Tata had planned to start selling its Tata Vista Indica electric vehicle in India last year, though that model has yet to debut. Tata has said the 74-horsepower Vista Indica EV has a top speed of 71 miles per hour as well as a 100-mile single-charge range.Tata works with French company on sub-$20,000 EV originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 18:03:00 EST. Report: Fortune offers 10 reasons why German cars rule
Filed under: Performance, Etc., Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Luxury What is it about German cars that compels many of us to lust after Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche models? Fortune asked that question and came up with 10 well-thought reasons: 1. First and foremost, the Germans have been practicing this automotive thing a bit longer than most countries. After all, it was Karl Benz who, in 1879, first patented the internal combustion engine and then in 1886 received a patent for his first automobile. 2. Fortune argues, the Germans have a storied racing history where their machines were pushed to their limits and reputations were forged. And then there's the infamous Green Hell - The Nürburgring - where legends are made. 3. Fortune' third reason is related to the second. Any country with 8,000 miles of public roads that allow almost unlimited speed is destined to turn out cars capable of thriving in that environment. The German Autobahn is as uniquely German as the cars the country produces. Find the other seven factors that Fortune says make German cars great by scrolling below, then let us know if you have any other suggestions or want to lodge any disagreements by sounding off in Comments.Continue reading Fortune offers 10 reasons why German cars ruleFortune offers 10 reasons why German cars rule originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 17:59:00 EST. Teased: SRT swings by Jay Leno's Garage with new Viper
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Videos, Dodge, Celebrities Look who stopped in to pay a visit to Jay Leno. The crew from SRT dropped off the 2013 Viper for our favorite denim-clad TV personality to play with for a spell. Leno owns two Viper models himself, including the very first black example ever produced. Needless to say, the guy knows his V10 snakes. Beth Paretta, Director of Marketing for SRT, chatted with the comedian about the new SRT brand and what makes the 2013 Viper so special. Among other things, Peretta notes the machine will bow with seats built by the same supplier that serves up the thrones in everyone's favorite Ferrari model. It certainly pays to have Italian masters on occasion. As you've likely heard, the 2013 Viper now comes with federally mandated traction control, which is a change Leno likens to the fact that the second-gen machine bowed with air conditioning whereas the first car didn't. The comedian maintains the step is a natural progression, especially given that the tech can be switched off on command. SRT dropped off the same pilot car that debuted at this year's New York Auto Show, and SRT design head Mark Trostle throws in his insights on the snake's latest iteration as well. Check out the video for yourself by scrolling below.Continue reading SRT swings by Jay Leno's Garage with new ViperSRT swings by Jay Leno's Garage with new Viper originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 17:15:00 EST. Report: Facelifted 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata leaked?
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Japan, Mazda, Design/Style It looks as if the current generation Mazda MX-5 Miata will stay on for a while longer. (Note: We are not complaining.) Images clipped from a Japanese brochure show a newly facelifted version of the NC platform, designated the NC3. The roadster wears an all-new front fascia, complete with a five-point grille opening and a pair of redesigned fog lamp housings to to either side. The fascia looks more than a bit like the one found on the Mazda Spyder Concept we all know and love, and softens the current car's always-happy-to-see-you grin. Word has it the 2013 MX-5 Miata will come with a new pedestrian-safe hood designed to pop up in the event of a collision. Step indoors, and the interior boasts new blacked-out gauges, as well as a new dash cover. It's unclear whether there are any mechanical changes on hand, though we do know the NC3 will bow with a new range of paint color and wheel options.Facelifted 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata leaked? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 16:28:00 EST.
Continue reading Saluda al nuevo Renault ClioSaluda al nuevo Renault Clio originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 16:31:00 EST. 2015 Toyota Prius rumors start flowing
Filed under: Hybrid, MPG, Toyota, LightweightToyota has already picked the low-hanging fruit when it comes to boosting the Prius hybrid's fuel economy. But the Japanese automaker's planning on climbing a little further up that tree. That's what Inside Line is reporting about the next, fourth-generation Prius, which is likely to debut in 2015. The world's best-selling hybrid will have better aerodynamics as well as lighter materials and tires that have less rolling resistance, Inside Line reported, citing a person familiar with the process that it didn't identify. While no fuel-economy figures were estimated, such gains will boost the Prius hybrid's fuel-economy beyond the EPA-rated 50 miles per gallon that the hatchback model gets now. As it is, Toyota continues to lengthen its sales lead over other hybrids. Through the first five months of the year, Toyota has boosted U.S. Prius sales by 73 percent from a year earlier to 107,504 units, with about 18,000 units coming from the new Prius C compact, Prius V wagon and Prius plug-in hybrid variants. Toyota releases June sales figures this week. Toyota has sold more than 2.6 million Prius vehicles globally since Toyota launched the model in Japan in 1997.2015 Toyota Prius rumors start flowing originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 16:01:00 EST.
