This is, after all, a land where an innocent Land Rover Freelander 2 can suddenly do a somersault in the middle of the street. And the image above, for instance, is the moment just before a fast-moving truck that tipped over in an oncoming lane slides into another Russian driver just going on about his business. Designers lathered the cabin in premium wood, leather and natural fibers, all with an eye toward sustainability. The wood trim is carved from Eucalyptus trees harvested in Europe, and the leather is tanned using a special olive tree extract instead of harsh chemicals. The cabin is outfitted with bench seats front and rear, which allows for easy ingress and egress in tight city parking situations. The driver, meanwhile, is treated to three displays for vehicle information, climate control and entertainment options. BMW says the design does away with the need for a center console. Power still comes from a 170 horsepower electric motor with 170 pound-feet of torque, which is good enough to scoot the concept to 62 mph in under eight seconds, thanks in part to a single-speed transmission. Top speed sits at 93 mph. The concept relies on lithium-ion batteries, which can be charged in around six hours via a standard socket, though a quick charger can reduce that time to around an hour. Expect a range between 80 or 100 miles depending on usage.BMW i3 gets luxury makeover for opening London BMW i Store originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 20:30:00 EST. Page was born with a defect called Tetralogoy of Fallot, which can cause low oxygen levels in the blood. Surgeons replaced Page's pulmonary valve in an operation that took around two hours without any complications or incidents. Tetralogy of Fallot is only treatable with surgery, and while doctors had worked to preserve Page's pulmonary valve, it deteriorated over the course of the actor's young life to the point of needing replacement. The 7-year-old star has already racked up an impressive resume. In addition to his role in the now famous Volkswagen Super Bowl ad, page has also seen screen time on TV shows like "The Young and the Restless" and "Prime Suspect." Posted: 17 Jun 2012 04:26 PM PDT ![]() Motorsports: Le Mans rule changes for 2014 announced, engine restrictions eased Filed under: Motorsports, Racing The Automobile Club de l'Ouest, organizer of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has announced a number of rule changes for the 2014 race that open up the options for LMP1 racers and guide their technology closer to that of road cars, and that should also give fans even better racing than we're used to seeing. Probably biggest of all is loosening the restraints on engine design. Currently, gas engines are limited in size to 3.4 liters, while diesel displacement can be no more than 3.7 liters, with further turbocharger, supercharger and air restrictor regulation on top of that. Those are all gone - "The limitations of cylinders, restrictors and turbo pressures are removed." Before you get ideas of this turning into a Group B for Le Mans, the cars will be limited to an "energy allotment" per lap. A fuel meter will allow a diesel-powered car 3.99 liters per lap, a gas-powered car would get 4.95 liters per lap, from tanks that are about 12 percent smaller. All LMP1 cars will be required to have closed cockpits, within which the driver will sit a little further forward and slightly higher to provide more visibility and, it is hoped, cut down on accidents when lapping slower traffic. Weights have been reduced, from the current minimum weight of 900 kilograms to 830 kg for non-hybrids and 850 kg for hybrids, and according to the Speed TV report, "all factory entries will be required to compete with hybrid systems." The cars will also be thinnner. Another factory handicap (depending on how see it) is that "super-exotic materials" will be banned in order to force carmakers to use materials that apply to their mainstream vehicles and not just their supercars. The ACO believes these new rules will "encourage the development of powerful and spectacular cars and also the development of technologies that have real meaning for the everyday motorist." Sounds good to us.Le Mans rule changes for 2014 announced, engine restrictions eased originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 19:03:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jun 2012 03:19 PM PDT ![]() Video: Translogic checks out the made-for-wheelchairs Kenguru EV Filed under: Videos, Hatchback, Specialty, Electric The people behind the subway-friendly, all-electric Kenguru have experienced many of the ups and downs that other start-up EV companies are all too familiar with. In fact, when you first go to the Kenguru website, it doesn't ask if you want to buy a car, it says "Investors Wanted!" But that drama hides a simple idea that is executed so well here. The Kenguru is basically a battery-powered, car-shaped wrapper for a wheelchair. That idea, to help people with mobility difficulties achieve a new level of independence, is elucidated nicely by Stacy Zoern, CEO of Community Cars (the company now behind the Kenguru; the vehicle was originally designed by Rehab, Ltd in Hungary) in a new video by our friends at Translogic. Watch it below. Based in Pflugerville, TX, Community Cars assembles the Kenguru by hand, but it currently doesn't have enough money to make and sell them (see: call for investors). The latest hiccup isn't stopping Zoern, who says that a joystick-driven model is coming next. This will be a big deal for her, because, as you can see in the video when she shakes hands, she does not have the upper-body strength to drive the current version. She has driven a car before, a converted "normal" car that cost $80,000, but ended up getting into an accident, making the cheaper Kenguru - at $25,000 - both personal and practical. We think that the Kenguru is also a perfect candidate for wireless charging. The RWD, fiberglass Kenguru has but one door - in the back to allow a wheelchair to roll on in - and has a top speed of 45 kilometers an hour (28 miles per hour) and a range of somewhere between 70 and 110 km (43-68 miles). It also qualifies, in some areas, for both green vehicle credits as well as vocational rehabilitation incentives. That just might make it the best kind of hybrid. See for yourself in the video below.Continue reading Translogic checks out the made-for-wheelchairs Kenguru EVTranslogic checks out the made-for-wheelchairs Kenguru EV originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 18:02:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jun 2012 02:10 PM PDT ![]() This insane race car is designed to compete in F1's all-electric series Filed under: Concept Cars, Motorsports, Technology, Specialty, Design/Style, Electric, Racing There seems to be a certain element of sexiness missing from electric car racing. The quiet whir of a field of motors simply lacks the carnal pull of the bark and fury of a chorus of internal combustion mills thrashing their way to the podium. And then there's design. Slaves to efficiency, electric racers typically adopt aesthetics borrowed from more from the suppository market than the race track. But the FIA's upcoming Formula E may change all that. Take the Bluebird GTL Formula E race car concept as evidence. The design looks to be heavily influenced by the latest crop of closed-cockpit Le Mans prototype racers as well as Formula One design. There may be a little Dark Knight thrown in there as well. Details are scarce on the vehicle's drivetrain at the moment. Team Bluebird says right now, the car is mostly just a design concept penned to demonstrate the significant aerodynamic work being performed, and may be more opportunities for sponsorship in the fledgling Formula E.This insane race car is designed to compete in F1's all-electric series originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 16:58:00 EST. One Tesla Roadster owner last month set upon his own tribute to the author by starting his attempt to drive around the world in - yes - 80 days. Even better, it's now a race to be the first world round trip driver with a standard EV (that "standard" is important, since the Solar Taxi has already made the trip back in 2007-2008, a journey that took 17 months. Back in September 2011, Tesla Roadster driver Rafael de Mestre announced his plan to be the first person to do the standard EV circumnavigation with his Model S once it was delivered. Trouble is, in February 2012, two French engineers set off from France in February in a Citroen C-Zero EV (the Mitsubishi i's sister vehicle) with the same goal, naming their journey the Electric Odyssey. That trip was to last a little longer than de Mestre's - eight months - and span about 15,000 miles, in part because the Citroen has a far shorter single-charge range than the Tesla. de Mestre didn't want someone else to steal his thunder, so he headed out in his Roadster in May and is now trying to catch the C-Zero team. Rafael de Mestre left Barcelona on presumably a full charge on May 11 and started heading west. As of today, his car is on a ship somewhere west of Los Angeles, according to his website, and had put about 3,700 miles on the Roadster. The car is now being shipped to China, where he is to continue his journey for another five weeks or so. Will he make it back to Europe before the Frenchmen? Stay tuned. Bur first, check out an incredibly cinematic teaser video of the race below.Continue reading Tesla Roadster racing around the world in 80 days [w/video]Tesla Roadster racing around the world in 80 days [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 16:27:00 EST. With Peugeot's withdrawal from the world's greatest endurance race, everyone was looking to the rookie Toyota team and its two petrol-hybrid TS030 race cars to provide some kind of worthy competition for the two diesel-hybrid Audi R18 e-tron quattros and two Audi diesel R18 Ultras. And they did. Five hours from the drop of the green flag, Nicolas Lapierre in the No. 7 Toyota passed Benoit Treluyer in the No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro on track to take the lead. At almost the same time, Anthony Davidson in the No. 8 Toyota was getting launched into the air when a GT Pro-class Ferrari turned into him heading into Mulsanne Corner. Both drivers had massive impacts with the tire barrier, ending their races, and Davidson is now lying in the hospital with two fractured vertebra. Worse yet, the second Toyota had fallen to second due to a pit stop during the safety car period, and on the restart it crashed into the Nissan DeltaWing. That DeltaWing's race was ended after a solid run in its experimental class - its biggest issue appeared to be that other drivers couldn't see it. The Toyota returned to the pits for repairs and got back on track, but retired with engine failure about 12 hours in. That left the four Audis to box for the victory, and they took the boxing seriously, making contact with tire walls, with other cars and with each other before the No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro driven by last year's winners Treluyer, Andre Lotterer and Marcel Fassler took the win, the first Le Mans win by a hybrid-powered car. Second was the No. 2 R18 e-tron quattro of "Mr. Le Mans" Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Dindo Capello, then the two diesel-powered R18 ultras in third and fifth. Nicolas Prost, son of four-time F1 champion Alain Prost, took fourth in a Lola Toyota, breaking up the Audi family. The LMP2 class win was snagged by Ryan Dalziel in an HPD-Honda, pursued heavily by the Oreca-Nissan team. Giancarlo Fisichella took the AF Corse Ferrari F458 Italia to victory in the GT Pro class after having crashed the car so badly on Wednesday that the team had to start the race at the back of the pack; the GT Am Corvettes were beset by mechanical trouble and on-track incidents. Redemption for the home team came from Pedro Lamy in the Labre Corvette C6.R, who claimed GT Am honors ahead of the Imsa Porsche team.24 Hours of Le Mans delivers something old, something new [SPOILERS] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 15:00:00 EST. Posted: 17 Jun 2012 12:28 PM PDT ![]() Motorsports: 24 Hours of Le Mans delivers something old, something new [SPOILERS] Filed under: Motorsports, Audi, Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, Racing If you don't want to know who finished where in the 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, then you should head to another post this instant... Posted: 17 Jun 2012 12:28 PM PDT ![]() 2013 Cadillac ATS configurator powers up, pricing still TBD Filed under: Car Buying, Sedan, Cadillac, GM, Luxury If you're just dying to know whether you can order your 2013 Cadillac ATS with, say, the 3.6-liter V6 and a manual transmission, you're in luck. Cadillac has launched its ATS configurator - sans prices - so go ahead and get officially disappointed, as that manual gearbox is only available with the 2.0-liter turbo, and only in rear-drive. Cadillac shows 10 exterior colors available on the ATS, with four shades of leather and two leatherette trims. We're partial to Opulent Blue Metallic paint and Morello Red leather, though admittedly the two don't really match, which is why Cadillac doesn't allow you to order them together. Now that we've betrayed the fact that we've already wasted far too much time playing with a configurator that doesn't contain any pricing information whatsoever, we'll suggest you just go mess with it on your own. We'll circle back once the Caddy team shows us the money.2013 Cadillac ATS configurator powers up, pricing still TBD originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 14:03:00 EST.
