Car and Driver weighs in Filed under: Technology, Videos, LuxuryCar and Driver Tested continues with an episode comparing the night vision systems from the Big Three German luxury makers. While the testing involves a remote-controlled turkey and a deer crossbred with a construction cone, the most interesting thing the guys from C&D do is to cover the windshields of the cars to try and drive through an autocross course relying on technology alone. Hence the conversation through the sunroofs you see pictured above. And the results? While we wouldn't call it an epic fail, it is an entertaining one. Night vision is one of the bells and whistles that's probably not destined to trickle down from the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz CL-Class anytime soon, but like most luxury features it's an impressive display of engineering.Scroll down to watch the full episode.Continue reading Who makes the best night-vision system? Posted: 18 Jun 2012 05:12 PM PDT ![]() Nissan expects Leaf sales to double when TN plant comes online Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Manufacturing/Plants, Nissan, USA The Nissan Leaf isn't exactly flying off dealer shelves these days, but the slow-selling EV could receive a sales boost when some production is moved to Tennessee. Bloomberg reports that Nissan is ambitiously expecting to double Leaf sales once the plant comes online in December. The sales boost would then give Nissan a chance at hitting 20,000 sales for the fiscal year that ends on March 31, 2013. It isn't out of the question that the Leaf could gain momentum with the help of local manufacturing, but first Nissan will need to get EV buyers in the showroom. Leaf sales have ebbed the past two months, falling behind the Chevrolet Volt in sales by more than a three-to-one margin. And speaking of margins, moving production to Tennessee from Japan should help Nissan's quest to make money on the Leaf thanks to lower labor and parts costs. The Smyrna, TN plant will be ramped up for Leaf production by December. The facility will be able to build up to 200,000 Leaf models and 150,000 battery packs per year.Nissan expects Leaf sales to double when TN plant comes online originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 19:48:00 EST. Sure, Ferris may have spoken those words in reference to a classic Ferrari California - well, actually, a replica of a classic Ferrari - but he could just as easily have been speaking of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class AMG. As we realized the last time we found ourselves ensconced behind the wheel of one, in that case a 2012 S63 model, we compared it to a spacecraft bound for Mars... meaning it ought to handle anything us mere terrestrial beings can throw its way with aplomb. Naturally, though, Mercedes-Benz can't sit back and rest on its laurels, and since the current model, known internally as the W221, has been on the market since 2006, its no surprise that its replacement has been spotted running around the streets of the Nürburgring. As you can see above, this AMG-fettled S-Class features a slightly lowered chassis along with side sill extensions, a rear diffuser and a modified front fascia. We also note predictably massive wheels wrapped in wide, sticky rubber. Though this model is missing them, our spy shooters tell us that, by the time this beast makes its way into production, it will sport quad exhaust tips that will exhale the spent gasses emitted by what we presume will be a turbocharged V8 of 5.5 liters.Next Mercedes-Benz S-Class spotted with AMG trimmings originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 19:28:00 EST. Posted: 18 Jun 2012 04:41 PM PDT ![]() Report: Seat Toledo leaks out ahead of Paris reveal Filed under: Budget, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, SEAT, Skoda A concept version of the Seat Toledo was shown off at the Geneva Motor Show earllier this year, but it was clear that the concept was code for "almost identical to production." Four images of what appears to be the final version of the Toledo have dripped onto the Internet, and sure enough, the only exterior difference we can spot is that the mirrors now have body-colored uppers. As a reminder, although it looks like a three-box sedan, it is still a five-door hatchback with a 17.6 cubic-foot boot capacity (slightly less than a Ford Mondeo) and slotted between the C- and D-segments in size. Engines are expected to be those also going in the Škoda MissionL concept, which will be the Škoda Rapid in production form and is the Toledo's sister car in the Volkswagen Group herd. Price will be the Toledo's strong point, with Geneva-era rumors of a base price at €13,000 to €14,000 (around $16,300-$17,600 USD). In keeping with such frugality, engines are predicted to be of small-displacement and lowly horsepower in both petrol and diesel forms. After it debuts at the Paris Motor Show, along with the new Seat Ibiza and the Rapid, the Toledo should be in dealerships shortly thereafter.Seat Toledo leaks out ahead of Paris reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 19:01:00 EST. Posted: 18 Jun 2012 04:41 PM PDT ![]() Motorsports: FIA demands ten teams in GT1 World Championship or else Filed under: Motorsports, Etc. The FIA GT1 World Championship is among our favorites simply because it fields some of the most lust-worthy machinery in all of racingdom. Having been dominated in its inaugural seasons by the Maserati MC12 (for all intents and purposes the racing version of the Ferrari Enzo), the GT1 series has featured competition models of the McLaren MP4-12C, Nissan GT-R, Ford GT and Lamborghini Murcielago, to name just a few. But metal alone hasn't been enough to make the series a success. The sustainability of the GT1 World Championship has been in question pretty much ever since its start just a couple of years ago, and the FIA has now given its organizers an ultimatum: get ten teams together representing ten different automakers by the end of August or face extinction. The last race in Slovakia had eight (including McLaren, Ferrari, Porsche, Ford, BMW, Lamborghini, Audi and Mercedes-Benz), represented by privateer teams (each fielding two cars), with Aston Martin expected to make it nine in time for the July 8 race in Portugal before the series heads eastwards in China, Russia and India for the remainder of the season. With the target so close, we hope the SRO Group that runs the series manages to attract (and retain) that vital tenth team. But we can't help but wonder why the FIA's World Motor Sport Council would want to shut it down. When it was launched, the GT1 championship was the FIA's primary sportscar racing series. Now that it has the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans under its umbrella, could the FIA be losing interest - or money - in the shorter-format racing series? See below for the full decision of the WMSC (relevant section in bold).Continue reading FIA demands ten teams in GT1 World Championship or elseFIA demands ten teams in GT1 World Championship or else originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 18:30:00 EST. Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:22 PM PDT ![]() Official: AMG vehicles pose for family portrait to celebrate 45-year anniversary, tease future Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Sedan, Performance, SUV, Wagon, Crossover, Hatchback, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury A 45th anniversary isn't one we're used to breaking out the Perrier-Jouet for, but since the anniversary in question happens to celebrate AMG, we'll get some corks flying. The biggest news this year for the in-house tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz is the A45 AMG, representing not just an unexpected end of the pool for AMG to dive into, but an entirely new - and compact - body of water. More than a makeover of the A-Class, it is the first peek at the makeover of AMG as it prepares for the "AMG Performance 50" on its 50th anniversary. The initiative will include "additional high-performance compact cars" and a bump from 22 AMG vehicles to 30. There are eight models under wraps in the photo, three of them look to be hatchbacks, one in the left row of three and two in the back row of five. One of them is certainly the A45 AMG, another one could be a B-Class AMG model. In that back row between the two hatches is what looks like a tiny crossover that could suggest a GLA AMG, and the two cars on the left of that row look like two small coupes, one of them perhaps the SLC. The last two cars, next to the SUVs, are a large sedan in front, perhaps the 2013 S-Class, and in the rear what looks like another coupe of unknown provenance - or maybe the CLA? And where is the dead-sexy CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake? Other AMG directives are more efficient powertrains throughout the range, development of lighter construction techniques, more all-wheel drive models beyond CUVs, more AMG Performance Centers, becoming the sole development center for Mercedes' V12 engines and a hint that lines like the CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG "will be extended further over the coming years." Scroll down for all the details on AMG's five-year plans.Continue reading AMG vehicles pose for family portrait to celebrate 45-year anniversary, tease futureAMG vehicles pose for family portrait to celebrate 45-year anniversary, tease future originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 18:03:00 EST. Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:22 PM PDT ![]() Daimler says third-gen Smart Fortwo electric is the EV drivers asked for Filed under: EV/Plug-in, SMART, Daimler Daimler talked about the start of production for the next-generation Smart Fortwo ED last week, but waited until today to give more details on the electric-drive city car (standard details here or below). With a bigger motor from EM-motive, higher top speed (75 miles per hour) and more range (90 miles), the new Fortwo ED has been upgraded with input from "extensive experience and customer feedback from various electric mobility projects," Daimler says in a statement. Smart head Annette Winkler says, "We have taken their feedback and wishes very seriously. The new smart fortwo electric drive represents a completely new dimension of zero-emission driving pleasure at a price that is really attractive." The new 17.6-kWh lithium-ion battery (the second-gen one was 16.5) can be charged in seven hours from completely empty "at a household socket or charging station on the electricity systems of most countries i.e. overnight" (in Europe, anyway, where home current is often over 200 volts, or similar to Level Two charging). A 22-kW (!) on-board charger allows a "completely empty battery to be fully charged in less than an hour" from a quick-charging station. Smart and SPX will offer two home- (or work-) charging boxes - a basic and connected version - that both offer this fast charging. The only difference is that the connected version can get online. The new Smart ED also looks different. LED daytime driving lights sit beneath headlamps that frame a larger grille. The doors are wider, too. Most interesting, the E-Smart can now be ordered in any of the colors that normal Fortwos are available in, but there is still the EV-exclusive green model. This upgraded package now comes with a brighter "electric" green mixed among the "crystal white bodypanels and white alloy rims." You can see all you like in the gallery and read more - about the new Smart Drive app (we hope in-car installation isn't still $300) - in the press release below.Continue reading Daimler says third-gen Smart Fortwo electric is the EV drivers asked forDaimler says third-gen Smart Fortwo electric is the EV drivers asked for originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 17:49:00 EST.
