| Posted: 13 Jun 2012 01:02 AM PDT  El Volvo XC90 estrenará la plataforma modular de los suecos Filed under: Volvo, SUV, crossovers y todoterrenos El nuevo XC90 llegará en 2014, y de hecho ya hemos empezado a ver bocetos oficiales de su identidad visual. Pero lo más interesante del nuevo modelo, sobre todo en cuanto a técnica, es que será el primer fruto de la nueva plataforma modular que los suecos han bautizado como SPA, y que deberá acoger en su seno a toda la próxima generación de modelos de la gama, desde los más pequeños a los SUV más grandes. El nuevo XC90 llegará además sola y exclusivamente con motores de cuatro cilindros al mercado, tanto diésel como gasolina. Este abandono de las mecánicas V8 y de cinco cilindros es una mirada clara hacia la ecología, ya anunciada hace meses por la compañía. Lo que sí habrá son versiones híbridas, con las que aportar un poco más de par y reducir consumos respecto a las variantes más normalitas. La cuestión es si el mercado principal del todoterreno de Volvo, que no es otro que Estados Unidos, sabrá vivir sin los ocho cilindros diseñados por Yamaha. Eso ya hace tiempo que nos lo dejó claro la compañía nipona de coches premium. Y quiere ir un paso más allá en el mercado europeo, donde su GS hasta ahora no tenía rival para los BMW 520d o A6 2.0 TDI. La solución pasa, de acuerdo con el jefe de ingenieros de la compañía, Koji Sato, por crear un modelo por debajo del ya conocido GS450h. Este nuevo modelo contaría con un motor de combustión más pequeño que el 3,5 V6 del 450h, y se llamaría GS300h. Nuestra duda es si será un V6 o un cuatro en línea de dos litros y medio, o un cuatro en línea sobre los dos litros de cilindrada. Sea cual sea la solución, el objetivo está claro: ofrecer un modelo más económico que el tecnológico y caro GS450h, con el que igualar en consumo y prestaciones a sus rivales germanos, a un precio equivalente. Si las cuentas no nos fallan, este nuevo GS deberíamos verlo en el Salón de París del próximo mes de septiembre. Las agencias con las que trabaja son desde siempre de primer nivel, y cuando se trata de rodar spots para TV o internet, lo bordan. Naturalmente, MINI no podía pasar por alto los juegos Olímpicos de Londres, menos aún considerando que el Grupo BMW es uno de sus patrocinadores, así los chicos de Oxford han aprovechado la ocasión para lucirse con The Britalian Job, un homenaje en clave cómica a Un Trabajo en Italia (The Italian Job en su versión original) protagonizada por todo un elenco de medallistas olímpicos. El corto fue ejecutado por Phil Churchward, director jefe de Top Gear, y aunque lógicamente no se puede comparar en con el clásico de Peter Collinson y Michael Caine (o la entretenidísima revisión de 2003), pero la realización es absolutamente sobresaliente. Perhaps Whitney Houston knew about Thomas Hundal, the youngest Chevrolet Volt enthusiast we've seen this week. Maybe ever. In a video posted by Barry Cullen Chevrolet, 13-year-old Hundal walks us around the plug-in hybrid, explaining why this or that part is so cool. The audio is, at times, whisper-quiet, but Hundal's sales technique makes up for it. He's particularly enamored by the "absolutely-ludicrous-for-the-segment 273 pound-feet of torque from the electric motor," which is an attitude we like to see from someone who can't even drive. Green Car Reports even says that Hundal is training salespeople at Barry Cullen on the details of Chevy products. Apparently, his desire to share Chevy minutiae with others is something the sixth-grader cultivated on his own. Curious to see him in action? If there's one segment of the auto market where being practical means absolutely nothing, though, it's supercars. While we're happy to live under the protection of a government that encourages our rights to assemble and free speech, it can be somewhat more difficult to accept groups who hold starkly different views from our own. Legislators in Georgia are learning that first hand. The state is currently debating whether or not to accept an application from the Ku Klux Klan to adopt a section of highway near the North Carolina state line. Other groups have already begun petitioning the state to deny the application. But if Georgia turns down the KKK, it may face a lengthy and expensive legal battle it will likely ultimately lose. The group says it just wants to clean up the road, but a state congressman has said the move is more about rebuilding the KKK's brand image. Something tells us that will take more than picking up litter on the side of the road. Even so, the KKK has said it will pursue legal action if denied, and that it will seek out the help of the American Civil Liberties Union to do so. While in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, Australian Formula One driving ace Mark Webber headed up to north the ICAR circuit at Mirabel airport - the same place where we were schooled by the Jacques Villeneuve Academy a couple of years back - for another kind of race altogether. That's where he met up with Jon DeVore, a competitive skydiver also sponsored by Red Bull and Infiniti. Jon showed Mark how to use a wind tunnel for something other than testing the aerodynamics of his racing car and Mark showed Jon how to get the most out of an Infiniti G37S on the track. The day culminated as it only could: with a race. Webber took off from the start/finish line at ICAR at the same time that DeVore jumped out of a helicopter and both raced - one flat and one free-falling - towards the checkered flag. Este evento, cuya mayor atracción es el ascenso por todo tipo de deportivos a su famosa cuesta 1,87 km, se ha convertido en ineludible para las grandes firmas de lujo, que en ocasiones aprovechan la ocasión para deleitar a los asistentes con un nuevo modelo. Ese será el caso de Bentley. La firma de Crewe ha hecho público a través de un despacho oficial que tiene planeado el "estreno internacional" de "un nuevo y apasionante" modelo "que combina unas prestaciones espectaculares y un lujo exquisito". ¿Y qué misterioso automóvil será ese? That could be changing - if ever so slightly - in the near future, however, if the latest reports are anything to go by. Speaking with the blokes over at Top Gear, KTM chief exec Stefan Pierer admits his company is working on a version of the hardcore track car with actual doors, a windscreen and removable roof panels. We're dying to know how Team KTM will stick a lid on the X-Bow's angular close-coupled sheetmetal without looking like a crumpled mess. Will the hardtop X-Bow lose its cycle fenders in favor of a more traditional closed-wheel design, too? Reuters references a Financial Times Deutschland report as saying such a move would give VW a leg up on Daimler Trucks, which holds the keys to U.S.-based Freightliner.Navistar International hasn't performed particularly well in recent months. Last quarter saw the truck maker post a second quarter loss tied to warranty costs. The news sent the company's stock down by 28 percent to its lowest level since 2008. The current Volkswagen portfolio includes both MAN and Scania, though neither of those commercial truck brands offer any presence in the sizable U.S. market. But Navistar has other suitors beyond Volkswagen. Investor Carl Icahn has voiced his desire for the company to merge with Oshkosh Corporation. Icahn increased his stake in Navistar by 12 percent last Friday. The all-electric models started production in late 2009. What's interesting is that the all-electric coupe will be available for either 18,910 euros ($23,625 U.S. at today's exchange rates) plus a 65-euro-a-month ($81) battery lease or you can flat our buy the car for 23,680 euros ($29,586). The cabrio models cost 22,000 euros ($27,486) with the lease or 26,770 euros ($33,446) outright. The car will go on sale in over 30 other markets later. Readers with good memories will note that these numbers are higher than expected. Originally, after all, Smart head Annette Winkler said the car would cost a lot less. Last September, she said, "We are offering the new electric smart within our sale&care model for considerably less than EUR 16,000 before tax - plus less than EUR 60 per month for battery rental." That would be $19,990 and $75, respectively. Even with the 19 percent VAT factored in, that would have come to 19,040 euros ($23,788). Along with the higher price, some of the performance numbers have gone up as well, compared to what was previously announced. The third-gen electric Smart has a 30-kW (55-kW peak) electric motor that can now push the little car to above 120 kilometers an hour (75 miles per hour) and deliver a 0-60 time of just 4.8 seconds. The 17.6-kWh battery offers a range estimated at 90 miles. Ahora la firma ha mostrado las primeras imágenes de la versión Turbo que podrá adquirirse a finales de año. La nueva variante del sedán compacto recibe un explosivo motor de dos litros ECOTEC con nada menos que 250 CV en combinación con una caja manual de seis velocidades de serie o la automática opcional, también con seis relaciones. Como es lógico este "OPC vestido de gala" presumirá de unas prestaciones excelentes y como ejemplo ahí están los 6,3 segundos que necesita para pasar de 0 a 100 km/h. Exteriormente el Buick Verano Turbo se reconoce por la "T" en la tapa del maletero y poco más. The campaign initially included 2004 and 2005 Liberty models, but has been expanded to include units from model years 2006 and 2007 as well. The campaign is aimed at vehicles sold or registered in States with a high probability of rust, where the rear lower control arms may corrode at an accelerated rate and fracture. Such a failure could cause a loss of control, which could lead to an accident. According to CNN Money, Jeep maintains there have been no reports of accidents or injuries, though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the failures back in April after receiving nine reports of control arm fractures.
