| Posted: 08 Jun 2012 05:44 PM PDT  NHTSA opens safety investigations into Toyota, GM and Honda crossovers Filed under: Recalls, Safety, Crossover, GMC, Honda, Saturn, Toyota The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is evidently keeping itself very busy these days, as the federal agency has just announced it is launching or renewing investigations into Toyota, Honda and General Motors crossovers. 2006-2008 model year Toyota RAV4 crossovers are under review for allegations of rear tie-rod rust which can result in failure. NHTSA also said it is probing some 35 complaints about 2005 Honda Pilot models with inappropriate activation of the vehicles' stability control system. The alleged malfunction can cause the vehicles to slow down or stop in bad unsafe situations. At the moment, NHTSA is reviewing a petition regarding the Pilot issue, a move that will determine whether it needs to open a full-blown investigation. In addition, Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia three-row crossovers built in 2007-2009 are getting looked at for "loss of low beam headlamp" function. One complainant said the wiring in his Outlook overheated and melted. NHTSA says it has received 415 complaints about the problem and a GM spokesman confirmed that the automaker already started a "Customer Satisfaction Program" in December to address the issue. Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons tells the The Detroit News, "We will fully cooperate with its [NHTSA] investigation." At least four of the complaints about the RAV4 claimed the tie rod failed at speeds above 35 mph, resulting in a loss of control. The NHTSA investigation summary states, "Pictures provided by some complainants show the wheel adjacent to the failed component severely out of wheel alignment with respect to toe and camber." That's what viewers of a two-minute, 21-second video Audi recently posted about its R18 e-tron Quattro racecar will be able to discern. The German automaker, which titled the video "The evolution of racing," included interviews with Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport, as well as Audi factory drivers Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen, who explained the technology behind the car, which will run in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race June 16. Also included are clips of the original Audi Quatrro from the 1980s, and other race and rally cars introduced since then. Check it out right below. The car made its debut last month at the FIA World Endurance Championship race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The powertrain includes a turbocharged diesel V6 that powers the rear wheels while a hybrid powertrain moves the front wheels. It was no surprise that Audi ran the fastest times during the two practice sessions - the pair of Audi R18 E-Tron Quattros nabbed the top spots - but there is little doubt that Toyota considers their results to be positive. After all, success in racing, particularly for a brand-new car at Le Mans, can be defined in a variety of ways. The quickest TS030 Hybrid ran just a little over a second behind the top Audi (3:27.204 vs 3:25.927), a time that is more than competitive. "We are continuously adjusting and improving the system, so each test day brings a step forward and that was true again today," said Hisatake Murata, the team's project leader. He was best known in the U.S. as the teammate of Carroll Shelby, the automotive impresario who was Salvadori's co-driver when they won Le Mans in 1959. Shelby died just weeks earlier, succumbing to complications from pneumonia. Salvadori's cause of death was not mentioned in the announcement issued by the British Racing Drivers' Club, of which Salvadori was a Life Member. Salvadori was better known overseas, where he competed in Formula One in the 1950s and 1960s, for factory teams including Cooper, Aston Martin, Vanwell, BRM and Connaught. His highest finish came in 1958, when he placed fourth in the drivers championship behind Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks. Salvadori won 98 races in his career, including his crowning victory at Le Mans. Salvadori was a car dealer before launching his racing career, a vocation he returned to after he retired from the track. The Japanese automaker released EPA figures for its gas-only 2013 Altima and from the fuel economy figures, it's hard to tell the difference. The fifth-generation, four-cylinder Altima gets an EPA-rated 27 miles per gallon city, 38 miles per gallon highway and 31 miles per gallon combined. The Altima Hybrid got 33s across the board. Nissan has just started shipping the new Altimas to dealers. Nissan says that the car's gas tank is big enough to provide 684 miles of highway-cruising range. The company started producing the fifth-generation Altima at its Smyrna, TN factory last month and has since started production at a second plant in Mississippi. Nissan is hoping the Altima, which was the second-best selling car in the U.S. last year, can overtake the Toyota Camry. For 2013, both the Infiniti EX and FX crossovers will be powered by the automaker's 325-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, replacing the 3.5-liter V6. Naturally, the official nomenclature has been changed to EX37 and FX37 for the new model year. We have to wonder, though: Why add the 3.7-liter unit to the EX and FX for 2013 but launch the all-new JX with the old 3.5-liter engine? Engine plant capacity issues? Regardless, the larger engine means there will be 28 more horsepower on tap in the EX and 22 more ponies available in the FX. For those seeking even more crossover thrills, the V8-powered FX50 will still be offered, packing 390 hp. The 2013 FX gets a couple other bits of freshening-up in the form of some new paint colors, including a Limited Edition model painted in Moonlight White. Moving Object Detection has been added to the FX's brilliant Around-View Monitor system, as well. The updated FX goes on sale in July with the 2013 EX following in August. In other news, Infiniti has announced that it will no longer offer the entry-level G25 sedan - powered by a 2.5-liter V6 and able to achieve up to 29 miles per gallon on the highway - leaving only the G37 and IPL G to fill out the range. The short-lived G25 will still remain on sale through December of this year. At launch, the Quattroporte will be introduced with its range-topping engine, a 5.2-liter turbocharged V8, good for something like 520 horsepower. That's all well and fine, but the big news is that a smaller, supercharged V6 will launch shortly thereafter, pumping out around 420 horsepower. That's right, Ferrari will be making a V6. C/D reports that the supercharged V6 comes from the group that is heading up the development of Ferrari's new 1.6-liter turbocharged six for use in future Formula One racers. This new 420-hp engine is said to be about 30 percent more efficient than the V8 currently found in the Ferrari California. The Quattroporte itself is tipped to be about 450 pounds lighter than its predecessor, which should also help in the efficiency department. Both engines will be available with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. The current car's automated manual transmission option will no longer be offered. These days, that's the average price of a new car, nevermind something with premium brand cachet attached. Forgive our rose-colored glasses for a moment, but we've just come across the pricing announcement for the new-for-2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible and it starts at $60,600, *plus $895 for delivery. (If a fixed head is more your speed, the IPL G Coupe starts at $50,500). That's a whole lot of ducats. Of course, this is the full-tilt Infiniti Performance Line model, with its 343-horsepower 3.7-liter VQ V6, spidery 19-inch wheels, tightened-up suspension, sportier exhaust and the buyer's choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed paddleshift automatic, to say nothing of the trick folding hardtop. In truth, Infiniti's rivals from Bavaria ask even more for their BMW 335is convertible ($60,800) and it only has 320 horsepower. Audi and its 333-hp S5 Convertible is a wee bit lighter on the wallet, meanwhile, commanding at least $59,300 and offering all-wheel drive, but it doesn't make the same sexy noise that the the IPL does. Of course, Infiniti still has some nice G models in the 30-$omething range and there's a full family of models in between to satisfy every junior executive's wallet. Us? | Posted: 08 Jun 2012 01:49 PM PDT  How GM got 3 more miles out of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt Filed under: Car Buying, Hybrid, Hatchback, Chevrolet, Electric As we learned earlier today, the 2013 Chevrolet Volt has beefed up. The new model year vehicle has a "bigger" battery and can go three extra miles when driven solely on the battery. We spoke with GM representatives to get more information on the model year updates as well as answers to some of your questions (e.g., don't expect E85 capability, once promised for the first-gen Volt, any time soon). Volt chief engineer Andrew Farah said there is a reason that the focus today was on the car's improved all-electric range: It was the number one request from customers. Three miles is incremental, but "it will enable more people to go gasoline-free in their daily driving," said Farah, and those miles "add up over a week." Farah wouldn't talk about how many more miles we can expect in the 2014 Volt, just that, "my expectations are that we would see larger improvements with model changes." Importantly, Farah said that the EPA made no major changes to the test procedures, so it is legit to compare the 2013 MPGe number to earlier ratings. The new battery is not any heavier or larger, just "electrically bigger." The extra range comes from a different battery chemistry as well as a slightly bigger battery, 16.5 kWh instead of 16. Farah said the battery is not literally any bigger (i.e., it's not any heavier or larger), just "electrically bigger." The .5-kWh growth seems small, but from a "battery guy's standpoint," nothing is small and no one should expect any dramatic changes from future versions of the Volt's current-generation battery, just continued incremental changes, said GM's director of global battery systems engineering, Bill Wallace. He added that GM is always looking into how much more energy they can wring out of the battery, but are not yet wiling to talk about how much more could be pulled out in the future. He did hint there is more to be had, though, saying that, "battery life is not as sensitive as we previously thought." Other changes in the new Volt are more minor. There is now an optional arm rest between the two back seats. A new power gauge in the dash shows more information about where the energy used to move the car is coming from, how much is from the battery and how much is from the gas tank. We already talked about the collision alert and lane departure warnings as well as the new standard "hold mode." The 2013 model also has new interior and exterior colors (pebble beige and silver topaz metallic, respectively) and new sport alloy wheels, which were actually available late in the 2012 MY.For some reason, GM has not yet released photos of the 2013 Volt, even though they will be instantly noticeable from the rear and above since the roof and liftgate on the new Volt will now match the body color (they used to be black). All GM has released is a small Photoshopped crop, seen right, of the new backside (click image to see the unmodified version below). The 2013 Volt goes on sale in August. The model will be based on Toyota's updated COMS one-person EV that was unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The automaker's Toyota Auto Body division will add a seat and seatbelt in the COMS's cargo area in order to turn the little runabout into a vehicle built for two. The Japanese government is working out details of standards related to ultra-compact EVs and where they can be driven. The revised model carries a $239,400 base price in the U.S., which does not include $2,400 in destination charges. The 25-horsepower bump to the twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 is the biggest of the upgrades, but the MP4-12C also gets some transmission tweaks that result in "crisper throttle response and improved clutch control for gear changes that are both faster and smoother." McLaren says it has also changed the Intake Sound Generator so that the driver can choose how much engine noise they'd like pumped into the cabin. Apparently customers were not entirely fond of the MP4-12C's touch-sensor system on the doors, so they will not have small buttons instead. Automatic headlights will now switch on along with the automatic wipers, and the automatic climate control will gain a new low setting. Other enhancements for 2013 include a new Volcano Yellow paint color, a new interior trim package and a new wheel design. Additional new options include an optional Vehicle Lift mode that raises the front end 40 mm and the rear 25 mm to make the car easier to drive over speed bumps and up driveways and an upgraded audio equalizer. McLaren will offer existing MP4-12C owners many of the upgrades later this year, gratis. All 2012 MP4-12C's are eligible to get the improved engine mapping that tweaks the horsepower upwards, as well as the revised transmission programming.
