Others may call it a daft conclusion. Either way, a recent editorial in Automotive News argues that stricter U.S. fuel-economy standards are actually restricting automaker investments in electric-drive powertrain technology. Instead, the logic goes, automakers are investing more in improving fuel efficiency of conventional engines. Turbocharging, valve timing and direct injection are among the methods companies are using to give the trusty old four-banger fuel economy numbers that rival regualr hybrids. Companies are charged with meeting an Obama Administration mandate for Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. That equals just over 40 miles per gallon in real-world terms and is roughly an 80 percent improvement over what fleets are getting now. With demand for any alt-fuel vehicle not named Toyota Prius coming in fits and starts, nervous automakers are preferring to invest in boosting efficiencies of conventional engines, which at best convert just a quarter of their on-board energy into propulsion.Stricter fuel-economy standards reduce electric-drive investment originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 20:04:00 EST. Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:34 PM PDT ![]() Long Term: 2011 Mini Countryman: May 2012 Filed under: Crossover, Mini, Long-Term Garage Our long-term 2011 Mini Countryman is nearing the end of its year-long stay in the Autoblog Garage, the past six months of which have been spent bouncing back and forth between the various Detroit-based team members (and Cleveland - we mustn't forget about Herr Neff). And while we've all had plenty of time behind the wheel of the biggest Mini, this is one car that always seems to be in high demand, whether its for long road trips or just because we all really like driving the thing. With the odometer nearing the 20,000-mile mark, I must commend the Countryman for how well it's held up over the past ten months of use. I recently spent a few days in it for a quick jaunt across Michigan, and aside from surface detritus like dust on the IP and an occasional french fry found under the driver's seat, the interior doesn't seem to really show any signs of aging - something we couldn't say about our recently departed long-term Hyundai Equus after only six months of service. There are no rattles or creaks to speak of and the various fabrics and plastics used throughout the cabin look as good as they did on Day One. Then again, we expect nothing less considering our Mini's $38,000 price tag. The one constant complaint from literally every single person who drives the car is how harsh it rides on the road. The one constant complaint from literally every single person who drives the car is how harsh it rides on the road, Detroit's horrific street surfaces aside. It's not entirely the fault of our car's optional sport suspension, though - we think it all comes down to its awful run-flat summer tires. The whole car will jolt as you coast over even the most minute of pavement irregularities, and it gets to be very, very annoying. I truly miss the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70 winter tires that were fitted to the car during the cold months. Yes, the 18-inch Pirelli Cinturato P7 run-flats offer better grip on dry roads, especially when driving the Countryman enthusiastically, but the rubber compound of those Blizzaks was so much more pleasant for everyday driving scenarios. Brake dust also continues to be an issue, and it makes me wish we had opted for one of the darker alloy wheel choices when ordering our car. (I suppose I'm the one to blame, since you readers picked this Mini in our initial poll, and the car you see here is the one I had configured.) But still, even after just a week of driving, the front wheels become coated in black soot, and even a run through a car wash won't completely do the trick in removing the grossness. But these are simple fixes. Get yourself a proper set of summer (or all-season) tires and the ride quality will surely improve. And if you build a Countryman with one of the dark alloy wheel options, there are plenty of lighter body colors that look really sharp with contrasting black accents. Even so, these quibbles with our long-term tester won't steer me away from spending more time with the Mini before it leaves, and judging from all the requests from other staffers eager to get another stint behind the wheel, they haven't upset too many of my fellow editors, either.Keep your eyes locked on the official Autoblog Facebook page for the majority of our updates, as well as the official Autoblog Twitter account (@therealautoblog, look for the #ablongterm hashtag).2011 Mini Countryman: May 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 19:30:00 EST. Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:33 PM PDT ![]() The U.S. is exporting oil products, so why is the price of gas still high? Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal It has always been the habit of the party that doesn't occupy the White House to blame various ills on the party that does. Especially in the past few years when it has come to gas prices, the party-in-waiting has blamed the POTUS for "pain at the pump." We're not taking sides here - Republicans are doing it to Obama now, just like Democrats did it to Bush. Unfortunately for their arguments, the President has about as much control over the price of oil as he does over the price of bread; if you saw what it took to get either to the retail outlet, the enormity of intricacies would make it plain. Case in point: In 2008, the U.S. began exporting oil products like gas and diesel for the first time in decades and, according to a report in Fortune, even though the U.S. is producing more oil than any time in the past eight years, the price of gas is still high. Part of the issue is the bottleneck in transportation: Two pipelines carry the black gold to the nation's major clearinghouse for oil in Cushing, Oklahoma, where the president can be seen in the image above, and there aren't enough pipelines to get it from there to refiners. One analyst called Cushing "the 'Roach Motel' for crude" because it could get in but not really get out. On top of this, domestic gas demand has dropped. That has added to the glut of oil awaiting shipment, which drove down the price of our own benchmark oil, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), by double digits compared to its European counterpart, Brent crude. Obviously, oil-market traders - whose contracts set the price for oil - couldn't let that continue, so they essentially walked away from WTI, a move that had the effect of setting the benchmark price at the higher Brent crude price. Put simply, they asked "Why sell a cheap commodity when I can sell the same commodity for more money?" And as we know, more expensive oil means more expensive gasoline. That's the gist, but naturally this is a huge simplification. For instance, there are more than 100 kinds of oil traded on the markets and we've only mentioned two, and middlemen between drillers and the gas station can number in the dozens. But the point is that when you want to know what's up with gas prices, don't look at toward the White House - no matter who is in office - look at traders who will work to get the best prices they can, at refiners who can idle facilities to support prices and at the minutiae of production. The U.S. doesn't even own the oil drilled here - companies purchase drilling rights from the government and the oil they find belongs to them; they can sell it to anyone anywhere. Once they get it out of Cushing, that is. And if you think the much disputed Keystone Pipeline might help, some analysts believe it will make the price of oil rise. The U.S. is exporting oil products, so why is the price of gas still high? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 19:00:00 EST. Their next project, however, takes them in yet another new direction. What they'll be doing is creating a car that never was, but could've been. The Cali-based team has decided to recreate the Aston Martin DB4 GT from the 1960s, but not just any DB4 GT - the DB4 GT Zagato. Unlike the original, however, they'll be building it Volante-style without a roof, and with the help of the Zagato coupe's original designer, Ercole Spada, who was styling chief at the design house at the time. And this being Icon, they'll be building their reimagined DB4 GT Zagato Volante around modern mechanicals, including Aston Martin's own AM V12 that can normally be found sitting pretty in the V12 Vantage. Icon is calling the car a Reformer, which the website describes as, "Concours quality restorations hiding modern chassis engineering. But to be driven. History remixed." Posted: 07 Jun 2012 03:28 PM PDT ![]() 2013 Chevy Volt pricing, changes and improvements get detailed Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Chevrolet, GM As we learned earlier today, the 2013 Chevrolet Volt has beefed up. The new model year vehicle has a "bigger" battery and can go three extra miles when driven solely on the battery. We spoke with GM representatives to get more information on the model year updates as well as the answers to some of your questions (e.g., don't expect E85 capability, once promised for the first-gen Volt, any time soon). Volt chief engineer Andrew Farah said that there is a reason that the focus today was on the car's improved all-electric range: it was the number one request from customers. Three miles is incremental, but "it will enable more people to go gasoline-free in their daily driving," said Farah, and that those miles "add up over a week." Farah wouldn't talk about how many more miles we can expect in the 2014 Volt, just that, "my expectations are that we would see larger improvements with model changes." Importantly, Farah said that the EPA made no major changes to the test procedures, so it is legit to compare the 2013 MPGe number to earlier ratings. The new battery not any heavier or larger, just "electrically bigger. The extra range comes from a different battery chemistry as well as a slightly bigger battery, 16.5 kWh instead of 16. Farah said the battery is not literally any bigger (i.e., it's not any heavier or larger), just "electrically bigger." The .5-kWh growth seems small, but from a "battery guy's standpoint," nothing is small and no one should expect any dramatic changes from future versions of the Volt's current-generation battery, just continued incremental changes, said GM's director of global battery systems engineering, Bill Wallace. He added that GM is always looking into how much more energy they can wring out of the battery, but are not yet wiling to talk about how much more could be pulled out in the future. He did hint there is more to be had, though, saying that, "battery life is not as sensitive as we previously thought." Other changes in the new Volt are more minor. There is now an optional arm rest between the two back seats. A new power gauge in the dash shows more information about where the energy used to move the car is coming from, how much is from the battery and how much is from the gas tank. We already talked about the collision alert and lane departure warnings as well as the new standard "hold mode." The 2013 also has new interior and exterior colors (pebble beige and silver topaz metallic, respectively) and new sport alloy wheels (which were actually available late in the 2012 MY).For some reason, GM has not yet released photos of the 2013 Volt, even though they will be instantly noticeable from the rear and above since the roof and liftgate on the new Volt will now match the body color (they used to be black). All GM has released is the Photoshopped crop seen, right, of the new backside (click image to see the unmodified version below). The 2013 Volt goes on sale in August. GM said there has been no change in pricing or destination fees compared to 2012 model. You can see pricing details below as well as in the gallery.Continue reading 2013 Chevy Volt pricing, changes and improvements get detailed2013 Chevy Volt pricing, changes and improvements get detailed originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 18:26:00 EST. The latest concerns the true owner of a 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K Roadster that was sold at last year's RM Monterey sale for $3.7 million. A German court has now ruled that the car is the property of the heirs of the wealthy German industrialist who originally purchased the car, according to Bloomberg. Dutch collectors Franz van Haren and Tony Paalman bought the classic Mercedes at the California auction, but when they had it shipped to Techno Classica in Essen, Germany, this March, the car was seized by the local constabulary, according to Sports Car Market. The Mercedes was bought new by Hans Prym in 1935 and owned by the so-called "Zipper King" until its disappearance in 1945, when Prym was sent to prison by the Allies. Prym's heirs charged that the car was stolen by American servicemen and shipped out of the country, according to Bloomberg. Under German law, the 30-year statute of limitations had not expired because the car was not in Germany. Indeed, nobody seems to know what happened to the car between the end of the war and the 1970s, when it "turned up in the collection of pioneer collector Russell Strauch," as the RM Auction listing stated. While the Dutch collectors may no longer have their car, they may still be able to get their money back from the RM seller, according to Sports Car Market. Whether they'll employ this tactic or fight the German court's decision should prove interesting.$4M "War Booty" Mercedes-Benz 500K belongs to heirs, court rules originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 17:29:00 EST. You can clearly see the effects of his 28-year career behind the wheel, with each wrinkle plotted out across his skin like a road map. The left side of his face got this way due to sun exposure, what those dermatologists who read NEJM call dermatoheliosis, a "thickening and wrinkling of the skin." But what's really surprising is to see the full image of both sides of his face, and just how different the right side looks. Since UVA rays pass through window glass, those long hours in the saddle led to enough sun exposure to cause the more pronounced skin damage, according to the report. Northwestern University dermatologist Jennifer Gordon, who is treating the man, told Fox News that he didn't wear sunscreen. Fortunately, the man has not yet developed skin cancer, according to the report. To keep yourself from winding up with similar skin damage, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests using sunscreen with at least an SPF 30 rating. And to this trucker, might we suggest considering evening out his skin's fortunes behind the wheel of a big rig in Australia? Indeed, for a bankrupt company that hasn't built a new car from scratch yet this year, Saab generates a surprising amount of news, however, little of it has been the good kind. Perhaps that will all change today, as this latest report indicates that the company has actually been sold for real this time. According to The Local, an English-language Swedish news site, the new owner of Saab is understood to be National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB, "a Swedish-registered company founded by a Hong Kong-based firm specialised in alternative energy and a Japanese investment fund." NEVS would only confirm that it had made a bid for Saab before the April 7 deadline, according to the report, which said that court administrators also refused to comment, though an official announcement is expected later this month. The offer is said to be in the $208-$250 million range and excludes the parts operation. The report says news of the sale was shared by the Trollhättan city manager, and though she did not know who the buyer was, she said she had been told the deal would be inked this week. Shortly after media began reporting the story, however, a public relations official for the city denied that anyone at the city knew about any deal, characterizing the leak as a "misinterpretation," according to the report. While we have imagined many times in recent months that we had written the final word on this Swedish soap opera, clearly this isn't it.Saab sold! Again. Posted: 07 Jun 2012 01:13 PM PDT ![]() 2013 Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid snapped almost completely exposed Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Honda, Spy Shots Look what our spies stumbled upon the other evening in Los Angeles: It's the 2013 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid, sans cladding. While these night shots aren't the best quality, we have yet to see any more revealing images of the next-generation Honda family sedan. Forget for a minute that this Accord is clearly the plug-in hybrid variant - you can tell by the extra fuel filler door on the front fender - and just check out the grille and those headlights. Look familiar? It should, unless you missed the Honda Concept C at the recent Beijing Motor Show. We're glad to see that its more aggressive front fascia has been applied nearly lock, stock, and smoking barrel to the Accord. (Is there any Honda that more needs this shot in the arm?) But it does raise some questions about the first set of 2013 Accord spy shots we saw last week, which show the car wearing a different nose. Will Honda have two different looks for the new Accord, one for the Plain Jane sedan and another, more exciting front fascia for its green model? It's a strategy that Hyundai employs on the Sonata, but we certainly can't confirm such a theory yet. We do, however, have some evidence of what Honda will be doing to the rear end of the Accord, which is making it more aerodynamic via those squared-off bumper edges on either side of the car. The car snapped in the pictures also appears to have a little spoiler on the lip of the trunk, though again, we can't say whether these details are exclusive to the Accord Plug-In Hybrid or might make their way into all the Accord models. Either way, these images look promising, as they show a car that's both more attractive and dynamic than the eighth-generation Accord we've been living with since 2008.2013 Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid snapped almost completely exposed originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 16:08:00 EST. Posted: 07 Jun 2012 01:13 PM PDT ![]() Official: Roush adds V6-powered 2013 RS Mustang to lineup Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Ford We love Roush's 565 horsepower 2013 Stage 3 Mustang, but not everyone can afford the $50,000 price tag. Granted, Roush also offers less expensive Stage 1 and 2 versions, but for those on a really tight budget the company has announced the 2013 RS Mustang. Using the V6-powered Ford Mustang as a base, the RS offers up the same wheel and tire package from the Mustang GT with the Brembo package, Roush lowering springs, a subtle body kit, embroidered floor mats, billet pedals and the requisite Roush badging. Customers can also opt for items like upgraded leather seats or a classic cue ball shifter. The 3.7-liter V6 remains untouched, meaning 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft torque are still on tap. All of this can be had for $4,000, meaning you can get yourself a genuine Roush Mustang for around for a little over $26,000.
