| Posted: 05 Jun 2012 01:03 AM PDT  El fin de semana que corrimos un EcoRally... y regresamos con premio Filed under: Fiat, Competición, Híbridos, verdes y alternativosPincha la imagen para ver la galería Cuando has corrido rallyes, y sudas por volver a correr "prácticamente lo que sea", porque llevas gasolina en las venas, cualquier llamada que te acerque a competir en algo siempre es bienvenida. Así que cuando nos ofrecieron la oportunidad de participar en el cuarto EcoRally vasconavarro, valedero para la copa FIA de la especialidad desde Fiat, no pudimos hacer otra cosa que aceptar de manera entusiasta. Claro que la parte buena de la película es que el EcoRally es un rally de regularidad, donde se valoran dos aspectos: el consumo y eficiencia energética, y la regularidad respecto a una velocidad media establecida. ¿Correr sin correr? ¿Gestionar velocidades medias? Yo que soy "de pie pesado", me veía acabando último, la verdad. Pero no fue así... Sin esforzarnos demasiado en el tema del consumo, conseguimos la victoria en el apartado de eficiencia energética dentro de la categoría VIII, la de coches con combustibles alternativos, quedando justo por detrás de los coches híbridos en la general absoluta, como primer coche "puramente de combustión". No sólo eso, completamos el rally con sólo 28,5€ en gasto de combustible para 542 kilómetros de recorrido, lo que son 5,25€ cada 100 kilómetros. ¿Sorprendido? Yo también... hasta el punto de que tengo miedo de convertirme "a la religión del gas licuado", como el director de otro famoso blog del mundo del motor que seguramente tú ya conoces. Y es que es un gasto que ni un coche diésel te da. La idea de un utilitario del segmento B con tracción integral y muchos caballos va cobrando cada vez más sentido con el crecimiento de estos coches, que ya miden como los míticos coches de Grupo A de finales de los ochenta, principios de los noventa, así que recuperar la fórmula de los cuatro cilindros turbo y la tracción total en un envase de cuatro metros es, sin duda alguna, un genial acicate comercial. De momento, el A1 Quattro ha pasado por pocas manos para probarlo a fondo, pero los chicos de la alemana Sport Auto sí que han tenido la oportunidad de grabar un vídeo donde mostrar el "cero a doscientos cincuenta y nueve de marcador" y unos acelerones sobre grava. | Posted: 05 Jun 2012 12:29 AM PDT  Official: 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT ups the supercar stakes Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury Despite the addition of "GT" to its name, and despite the fact that this is indeed a more hardcore version of the tasty Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, there's one thing you need to keep in mind: This is not - we repeat, not - an addition to the SLS range. To pull from the automaker's press blast, "Mercedes-Benz will now exclusively offer the new SLS AMG GT. Available as a Coupe and Roadster, it will go on sale in mid-November 2012, replacing previous SLS AMG versions." The SLS AMG is dead. Long live the SLS AMG GT. So, let's dive in to the good stuff. For starters, the GT uses the same 6.2-liter fire-breathing V8 from the current SLS, though there's an additional 20 horsepower on tap - 583 versus the 563 of the outgoing model. Torque output remains the same at 479 pound-feet, and the same seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transmission is on tap. The added grunt shaves a tenth of a second off of the SLS' 0-60 time (3.6 seconds instead of 3.7), and the GT's top speed is electronically limited to the same 197 miles per hour as before. But it's not just the powertrain that gets some enhancements. Mercedes has reworked its adaptive performance suspension, and compared to the 2012 model, we're told that the 2013 GT rides on stiffer springs and dampers that have been more aggressively tuned. The new SLS still rides on 19-inch alloy wheels up front, wrapped in sticky 265/35-series rubber, while 20-inch rollers are found at the rear, wearing even sticker 295/30-series tires. A number of enhancements have been made to the SLS' interior with the introduction of the GT model, including a new Designo style package. This optional extra comes in three different color combinations - in both single- and two-tone finishes - and features only the finest leather surfaces with contrast stitching and a diamond quilt pattern on the seats and doors. Sounds plush. Of course, plenty of other optional goodies are also available, including carbon fiber parts for both the interior and exterior, carbon ceramic brakes, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and different wheel options. We never could find much fault with the current SLS AMG, and it would appear that things are only getting better for 2013, added nomenclature aside. The Turkish designer has dreamt up conceptual Ferraris and Aston Martins, and one of his projects - the Soleil Anadi - is actually heading into production, however limited. Now he's come back with a new Alfa Romeo project. Called the 12C GTS, the design envisions a twelve-cylinder front-engined supercar - not likely to get picked up for production by Alfa, in this form anyway, as it would encroach on sister-brand Ferrari's territory even more than the 8C Competizione did. But a man can dream, can't he? And dream Sahin has. In fact he's looking for investors to fund its production. Solo unos días después de que el jefe de BMW Norteamérica dijera que quería un M7 y que estaba luchando para transformar su ansiada gran berlina deportiva en algo más que una idea, nos enteramos de que la Bayerische ha registrado un puñado de denominaciones a cada cual más curiosa, incluyendo, efectivamente, el nombre M7. Algunos de las marcas registradas durante los últimos dos años y compiladas por BimmerPost son Serie 2 y X4, cuyos modelos de producción podemos dar por confirmados oficiosamente, pero también hay rarezas algo más difíciles de colocar, como M10, un puñado de coches que ya conocíamos, tales son los i3 e i8 (aunque la familia va del i1 al i9) y hasta el clásico Z8, cuya denominación querría mantener BMW en su poder. ¿Significa que vayamos a ver estos coches a corto plazo? En absoluto. The world's oldest endurance race takes place in less than two weeks. While the DeltaWing underwent its first public testing session back in March at Sebring, this is the first time its drivers - Michael Krumm, Satoshi Motoyama and Marino Franchitti - have driven it at Le Mans. The team was able to complete 54 practice laps, almost all of which were on the same set of tires. A brief instance of weather allowed for a single lap to be run on rain tires. The DeltaWing's quickest practice lap of 3 minutes, 47.980 seconds came at the hands of Motoyama. Based on the results of last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, that lap time would make the odd-looking DeltaWing competitive with the LMP2 class of cars, and notably quicker than either class of GT cars. The DeltaWing will compete at Le Mans in the experimental "Garage 56" class meant to showcase innovative technology, and with half the weight, half the horsepower and half the aerodynamic drag of a typical Le Mans Prototype car, should consume tires and fuel at a much lower rate than the rest of the field. Witnesses say the man, dressed all in black, lined up his late-model coupe and planted his foot on the accelerator. The car crashed into the glass doors and both building security and police quickly responded to the scene. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, and so far, police haven't released the man's name or a motive for the crime. Crews have already set to fixing the damage, and the doors are expected to be in working order shortly. The German automaker has reportedly trademarked a number of new vehicle names, including 2 Series, X2, M7 and M10 among others. Of course, just because a manufacturer lays claim to a name doesn't mean there's a production model around the bend, but the monikers at least give us an idea of what's being thrown around conference tables in Munich. While names like 2 Series, X2 and M7 are no real shock given the rumors we've heard as of late, it is interesting to ponder what an M10 might be. The German manufacturer also planted its flag on awkward names like Compactive, Compactive Tourer and Ubranic. All of those badges could conceivably find a home on the new line of front-wheel drive BMW models set to be introduced in the near future. That's the news from Car Magazine, anyway, which reports today that the automaker is cancelling the all-electric A2 project because it would likely be too expensive at 40,000 euros (just under $50,000 U.S. at today's exchange rates). To be fair, Audi never promised us this car. When the car debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, complete with a rear fog light laser, Audi admitted it was just a "concept technology study." Looks like study time is now over. Car says that another EV project in the company stable, the A1 e-tron plug-in hybrid with a Wankel motor, has also been shut down. Microsoft ha hecho públicos los primeros detalles de Forza Horizon, un nuevo episodio de la famosa serie de conducción desarrollada por Turn 10 Studios para Xbox 360. Este inédito capítulo, que por su temática casi podríamos considerar como una obra paralela al resto de los juegos de Forza, busca satisfacer las ansias de libertad y espectáculo de muchos aficionados sin por ello caer en los excesos puramente arcade de Need for Speed. Su programación corre a cargo de Playground Games, un estudio británico fundado por gente procedente de Codemasters (sobran los comentarios) y Bizarre Creations (los monstruos detrás de Project Gotham Racing, que en paz descanse) Forza Horizon tiene en cierto modo hasta su propio universo; el escenario se basa en las maravillosas carreteras de montaña de Colorado, donde tiene lugar el imaginario festival automovilístico Horizon. En él se dan cita conductores de todo tipo de vehículos dispuestos a competir en carreras de lo más variopintas, tanto de día como de noche (el juego contempla el transcurso dinámico de las 24 horas del día), y hasta contra adversarios que no tienen por qué tener cuatro ruedas (alguno, se insinúa, hasta podría tener alas). Kinect, naturalmente, tendrá un peso importante en Forza Horizon. La barra sensora de Xbox 360 servirá para controlar el GPS activado por voz de tu coche, dado que según Playground, el mundo de Horizon es tan abrumadoramente extenso que algunos jugadores podrían perderse sin la ayuda de un navegador, que indicará al usuario hacia dónde debe desplazarse para disputar la próxima carrera. Una vez en marcha y compitiendo se podrán acumular puntos que más tarde servirán en el Festival Horizon para adquirir nuevos coches. La lista completa no ha sido revelada (Playground dice que la conoceremos a lo largo del verano), pero la galería oficial nos permite comprobar la presencia de un buen puñado de coches nuevos (como el Dodge Viper de última generación) y no tan nuevos (Ford GT40 y Nissan Skyline GT-R R34). ¿Salivando ya? Get in line, and be warned: you're going to have to wait. According to The Detroit News, Chrysler has stopped taking wholesale orders on the 2012 model year 500 Abarth. According to sources within the automaker, customers who plunk down the money for the hotted-up 500 right now will be put on the 2013 model year waiting list, with those cars expected to arrive in the fall. In a statement to the Motown newspaper, Chrysler officials simply said that the number of orders received "exceeded the production run of this model for the 2012 model year." Chrysler had originally planned to build about 1,000 Abarth models for the 2012 model year. However, those cars were all spoken for by the end of April - the Abarth's first month on sale - so the automaker upped production to 3,000 units. Johan de Nysschen es el último ejecutivo en cambiar de puesto, pero no para ocupar una nueva posición en el cada vez más complejo organigrama del Grupo Volkswagen; el ex-jefe de Audi Norteamérica, que anunció el pasado viernes su dimisión tras 19 años en la casa de los cuatro anillos (los últimos 7 en su antigua posición de CEO en Norteamerica), se ha pasado a Nissan, donde capitaneará el futuro de Infiniti. De Nysschen, además, cambiará de residencia, y es que aunque Estados Unidos es el mayor mercado de Infiniti, el nuevo cuartel general de la marca premium de Nissan se encuentra en Hong Kong. Desde allí deberá dirigir la expansión de Infiniti en China, su segundo mayor mercado por importancia, además de una mina de oro que apenas ha comenzado a ser explotada por la firma japonesa. Gracias al empuje del gigante asiático, Infiniti espera triplicar sus ventas globales para 2016, colocando medio millón de coches. A report on Inside Line that the forthcoming 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo would carry just a $1,600 premium over the standard version had us drooling with the possibility that a 201-horsepower Veloster with heated leather seats and BlueLink might be had for under $20,000. Alas, Hyundai tells us that Inside Line got it wrong. The truth is that the $1,600 number reflects what the turbo component is actually costing the Korean automaker. Since the Veloster Turbo will also include the base model's $2,000 Style Package as standard equipment, the car will actually have a base price around $22,000 when Hyundai announces pricing details on Wednesday. (That's right where the price was expected to be when we last heard from Inside Line on the subject, by the way.) We've also got some clarity about pricing for the matte gray finish we so covet. While an exact number for the extra-cost option is still under wraps, we're told our guess of around $500 is close. The subject was that potentially difficult moment in a young car's life, when it needs to tell it parents the truth. In the ad, a Chevy Volt comes out of the closet to say, "Mom, dad, I'm electric." It's a clever ad, and it's good to see automakers not afraid to continue advertising to the GLBT community even though they have been criticized for doing just that in the recent past. GM has a long history of supporting GLBT causes, including Gay Day at the Movies with the Camaro (which did cause some cold feet) and contributing to the It Gets Better campaign. | Posted: 04 Jun 2012 01:17 PM PDT  Official: Mazda debuts supercharged MX-5 Miata Yusho concept in Leipzig Filed under: Aftermarket, Convertible, Performance, Etc., Mazda, Design/StyleMazda has unveiled a pair of special MX-5 Miata models just for the 2012 Leipzig Motor Show, including a supercharged version of everyone's favorite roadster. For the latter showcar, dubbed "Yusho," Mazda has turned to our friends at Flyin' Miata for a supercharger kit to boost the machine's grunt to around 241 horsepower. As you may recall, that's the same blower that powered our Targa Newfoundland racer. Mazda also threw in a new engine management system paired with a set of new fuel injectors and a free-flowing exhaust. The powerplant also benefits from beefier Cosworth pistons and connecting rods, while a sport clutch handles dumping all that power onto the six-speed manual gearbox. A set of 4.10 gears in the rear differential also helps the Yusho sprint from corner to corner. With a set of Bilstein shocks, Eibach lowering springs and semi-slick Toyo tires, this is likely the most fun you can have with your top down. While the Yusho is merely a concept, Mazda is also debuting a limited-production special edition MX-5 Miata as well. At Just 200 units, the Senshu MX-5 Roadster Coupe comes with a retractable hard top, sportline interior and a Bilstein sports suspension. Designers applied a unique racing stripe, and a set of 17-inch alloy wheels give the machine a little more menace. Mazda will only produce 200 of the Senshu Miata models, and each one will cost European buyers €1,280 - about $1,600 USD - over the base price.
