The group's lighthearted antics bring unexpected smiles to the most unlikely of places, but their latest stunt may have gone a bit too far for some of us on staff. The group wrangled around 100 cars and parked them in a lot in Staten Island. Then, the owners were instructed to actuate the panic button on their key fobs from a hidden location, resulting in a "car alarm symphony." Needless to say, bystanders were perplexed by the cacophony. A handful of us here on Autoblog are into that kind of juvenile fun, while the rest of the gang sees car alarms as an octave below the baleful wail of the damned. Or maybe that should be 5,000 steps forward, a few steps back. In just 16 days, Tesla Motors plans on delivering the first Model S vehicles to customers (which, we believe, will end up costing Dan Neil $1,000, but no one is responding to our questions about that bet. In any case, CEO Elon Musk and other big investors are already driving theirs). Today, Tesla has got more good news in its latest "Tesla Tuesday" video, and the headline number is that the company plans to offer 5,000 test drives in 45 days during the "Get Amped Model S Tour." Anyone who has reserved a Model S will get first crack at these drives, which start the day after deliveries begin. Each test drive will last around eight minutes and, at the first stop near the Tesla factory in Fremont, CA, anyway, "the course offers a variety of experiences that include freeway driving, long sweepers, tight turns, smooth and rough roads, and general urban driving." Reservation holders will be getting emails about the tour soon. In the video below, you can see the Model S being made, picking up where last week's video left off. Moving from the stamping are, the Model S bodies are put together in the Tesla Body Center. Like last week, there are mechanical workers involved: At each station, robots build a unique sub-assembly and then transfer it to the Body Framing Line where it is joined with other sub-assemblies from parallel stations. The robotic arms of our Body Framing Line bond, rivet and weld sub-assemblies into the iconic form of Model S. It's not all good news in Teslaville, though. In Natick, MA, the Massachusetts State Automobile Dealers Association and some Natick auto dealerships are questioning whether Tesla's store license there "should be revoked because the company has not met relevant state laws." The rub is that Tesla is not planning to offer any service at the Natick Mall location, since that location will be more a showroom than a dealership. Tesla has always wanted a more hands-on approach to selling cars, opting to set up a network of Apple Store-like dealerships and showrooms. An attorney for the dealers wrote to the town, saying, "We want to ensure that Tesla complies with all the same requirements that our new car dealership members are required to comply with. We want to work with the town to make sure everyone is treated fairly." Si en la primera parte veíamos con extrema brevedad cómo el fabricante de Silicon Valley da forma a los paneles de carrocería en las máquinas de estampado, hoy podemos observar con mucho más detalle la construcción de los chasis, montados cuidadosamente en una línea robotizada tan moderna como la del fabricante más puntero. Tesla ha querido ahorrar dinero comprando maquinaria usada procedente de las fábricas que cerraron durante la crisis (la propia factoría es de segunda mano; anteriormente la compartían General Motors y Toyota), pero tampoco se puede decir que hayan escatimado en gastos. Esperamos que esto redunde en una buena calidad técnica, porque sus rivales de Fisker no han comenzado exactamente con buen pie, y no hace falta sembrar más dudas en estos momentos sobre la validez de los vehículos eléctricos. Famine would be a thing of the past. War nothing but a dark spot on our history and disease just a whisper of recollection. Sadly, that just isn't the case. Instead, manufacturers have been happy to supply the masses with wave after wave of gadgets and gizmos that do little beyond entertain us for a few quick seconds. Film-making duo The Theory decided to make the best of one of those gadgets, the Micro Vision projector, by crafting a clever police chase scene. The quick film follows a convict as he busts out and heads for the hills, or at least the hallway. After a short foot chase, the newly freed con takes to a Ford GT in an effort to escape the long arm of the law. While it's no solution to the world's woes, the clip is clever enough to paint a smile on our faces. That's good enough for us. But sadly, we do not live in a perfect world. Icon, the company behind some of the most lust-worthy vintage off-roaders and street machines in existence, is accusing toymaker Mattel of stealing the FJ40 Baja Edition design for a Hot Wheels die cast toy. According to the most recent Icon newsletter, Hot Wheels lifted a photo of the heavily modified FJ40, slathered a quick Photoshop job over the image and called it a day. Except Mattel reportedly never asked Icon for permission to use the image or the vehicle design in its marketing or products. Icon reportedly reached out to Mattel to no avail. That's about when the custom builder turned to its lawyers, prompting the attorney for Hot Wheels to say the company wanted to settle the matter out of court. A month went by before Icon once again tried to reach out. Mattel allegedly dismissed Icon, effectively challenging the smaller company to try to sue the toy monolith if Icon thought it stood a chance. Hot Wheels hasn't spoken out on the issue. With five of the tiny diecasts on our desk and five hundred in a box downstairs, we've had a life-long relationship with the toymaker. But that doesn't excuse the reported bully tactics. As is to be expected, though, in Škoda guise, the design-package makeover as applied to the Superb Combi Outdoor isn't quite so flashy. The ride height and suspension are unchanged, and there are no steel undertrays installed fore and aft. But there is "robust synthetic paneling" that runs all around the lower rim of the car, as well as a revised font bumper with fog lamps and a larger lower intake. This is said to enable the Combi Outdoor to "hold its own even beyond paved roads," but we'd take that with a few grains of whatever the Czech word for "salt" is. It is available now with any engine and drive layout in the range other than the GreenLine. Most importantly, that meant that interested buyers no longer needed to place a $99 reservation fee to order their car from Nissan's website. Instead, as Nissan's Katherine Zachary told AutoblogGreen, interested customers can now create an account online or order a Leaf directly from the dealer, "without any associated fees. Dealers across the country are able to sell the Leaf, with many receiving the cars directly." In short, the Leaf is starting to be sold just like any other car. As part of the change, Nissan began issuing refunds to anyone to had previously put down a $99 deposit on a Leaf but had not yet ordered one. Getting a refund does not take a person out of their place in the reservation queue. Zachary added: The changes are part of the natural evolution of the Nissan Leaf sales process and are a reflection of customer feedback. It's important we provide customers with the options they desire when it comes to the purchase process. Our dealers have made significant investments in sales and service training, and charging capabilities, and are well equipped to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction. In some limited situations, such as when the credit card used to make the deposit was now inactive, Nissan is issuing refunds via check. Originally, Nissan set the Leaf lease prices at $349 a month for a 36-month lease. This week, that price was lowered to either $289 a month (for SV trim) or $319 for the upscale SL model. That's not all that's changed: the lease term has now climbed to 39 months and the initial payment went from the original $1,999 to $2,999.
