| Posted: 02 Jun 2012 05:35 PM PDT  Video: Truck crashing through bar definitely spills a few drinks Filed under: Safety, Videos Patrons at Gordie's Place in Little Canada, Minnesota are lucky to be alive after a driver crashed her pickup into the bar. Six adults were taken to the hospital, including the driver, who apparently suffered a medical condition while behind the wheel. Two patrons were seriously injured, and after looking at the video, which is posted below, it's incredible that anyone survived the violent impact at all. | Posted: 02 Jun 2012 03:56 PM PDT  Report: 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO made for Stirling Moss becomes world's most expensive car Filed under: Classics, Ferrari Bloomberg reports that a 1962 Ferrari GT0 has been sold for $35 million, making it the most expensive car in the world. The record price eclipses the $32 million paid for a 1964 Ferrari 250 GT0 back in February and the $30-34 million dished out for a 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic back in 2010. The 250 GT0 in question is chassis number 3505GT and was built specifically for the legendary Stirling Moss. While Moss never actually ended up racing the car (a career-ending crash in April of 1962 prevented him from getting behind the wheel), it has a fairly significant race history with several wins. 3505GT also competed in the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans, although it ended the race with a DNF. The car stands out among the other 250 GTOs thanks to its unique lime-green livery. Amazingly, the price of this particular car has increased tenfold since 1996, when it was purchased for $3.5 million. From there the car has changed hands a few times, with the most recent owner, a Dutch businessman, purchasing it for $8.5 million about a decade ago. The 250 GTO's newest owner, car collector Craig McCaw, earned his fortune by selling a telecommunications company to AT&T for $11.5 billion back in 1993. We most recently saw the car at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance last year, where it was displayed as part of the 250 GTO's 50th anniversary celebration. I imagine most manufacturing companies enjoy getting advice from the media. We're so good at it. For the most part, the ideas just rehash things you probably already knew. Carmakers certainly do. Who doesn't want higher residual values? Who doesn't want to build and sell more luxury vehicles? Family sedans? But what I find more upsetting are some idiotic statements, such as comparing the percentage of crossovers built by one company that doesn't have a full-size truck to one that does. It makes for some neat numbers, but unfairly so. I hate when any story makes me sound like an apologist for Detroit. Of course, no one in Detroit wants its key industry to do poorly again, and it is possible, but let Detroit win or lose on its own merits, not some made-up ones. Both Toyota and Audi are hitting the newly inaugurated World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans with hybrid propulsion that pairs a conventional, fossil-fuel-burning engine to an electric motor set-up that - like the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) used in Formula One - stores up energy from braking for redeployment under acceleration. While embracing the hybrids, they've got regulators at the ACO and FIA a little concerned over their potential advantage. So rather than let the hybrid prototypes put their stored energy down anywhere they see fit, the officials are identifying specific zones on each track where the systems can be used. At the 6 Hours of Spa in Belgium where the Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro made its race debut (finishing second only to its conventional counterpart, the R18 Ultra) there were five such zones. At the longer Circuit La Sarthe where Le Mans is held, organizers have identified seven zones - specifically Dunlop, Forza, Michelin, Mulsanne, Indianapolis, Porsche and Ford, for those up to speed (so to speak) on the names of each corner and chicane on the circuit. While increased traffic has turned some roads into aural nuisances, engineers are working to reduce tire noise by changing the design of pavement surfaces. According to The Wall Street Journal, new pavement surfaces have the potential to cut tire noise by three to five decibels, which is enough to make roads noticeably quieter. Among the techniques used are giving the pavement a texture and mixing different substances, like rubber, into the concrete. The problem with these approaches, however, is that over time their effects are mitigated by wear and tear. Dirt clogs the textured pavement, and the quiet roads can wear out more prematurely than standard surfaces, according to the report. Experiments continue, however, with test roads deployed in Arizona, California, Virginia and Washington state. The latest publicity stunt, however, drives the point home in more ways than one. The undertaking involved pro golfer Jake Shepherd, Formula 1 veteran David Coulthard, and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. Jake teed off at the Dunsfold Aerodrome in England and hit the ball at an astonishing 178 mph. Coulthard sped off after it in the SLS and caught it in the open cockpit some 900 feet afield - that's over three football fields in distance - at 120 mph. The feat was enough to put Shepherd, Coulthard and the SLS in the Guiness Book of World Records on only the second attempt. Por fortuna no hará falta que esperes hasta finales de septiembre para contemplar la versión campera del atractivo V40, porque Johann, uno de los usuarios de la comunidad neerlandesa Volvo-Forum, ha cazado en culitatis al crossover. Desprovisto por fin de camuflaje, podemos apreciar con claridad las novedades visuales utilizadas por el XC40 para marcar las distancias con su hermano de ciudad. Los paragolpes y las luces antiniebla son distintos, la parrilla incorpora un nuevo tramado y unos nuevos faldones laterales tratan de aportar una cierta sensación de fortaleza. Tampoco faltan las consabidas barras de techo, tan características de su segmento. It makes sense, really. The Escape is built at the Louisville Assembly Plant, where the pace vehicle was unveiled on May 15 by two-time Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth. Being a crossover, the 2013 Escape is sort of a truck (okay, not really), so it's sort-of a natural fit for the June 28th NASCAR Camping World Truck UNOH 225 race in Kentucky, the first of three events the Escape is pacing that weekend. Ultimately, Ford's just showcasing its latest product at a track that uses its brand of safety cars. It's publicity, not glory, and all kinds of vehicles are called upon to keep the speed down, which is why, as weird as a 2013 Ford Escape pace car may seem, it's downright normal compared to, say, a Toyota Camry Hybrid or an electric hatchback like the Focus Electric pace car. The racer describes the spectacle as Baja meets Bigfoot, wherein 600-horsepower beasts with 20 inches of suspension travel race side-by-side in stadiums around the country for a shot at a $60,000 nightly purse. The driver who manages to take home the championship win will walk away with $500,000. The series is patterned after the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Race Series, which gave drivers like Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears their start in racing some 25 years ago. Each event will feature two days of festivities, including a fan expo, tailgating and side-by-side ATV races. Each truck will have at least some resemblance to production models outside and will run DOT-approved street tires. Check out a very unique season preview as well as a quick clip of one truck in action by scrolling down.
