Official: Mercedes-Benz releases 2013 GL63 AMG details for U.S.
Filed under: Performance, SUV, Mercedes-Benz Up until now, there has never been a proper AMG version of the high-and-mighty Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. That all changes for the 2013 model year, as the automaker has just released the full slate of details about the upcoming GL63 AMG, set to arrive in U.S. showrooms in the first quarter of next year. Cool as this GL63 may be, the upcoming G63 AMG (and not-for-U.S. G65 AMG) indeed win in the absolute awesomeness department. The GL63 AMG formula is simple: take the new-for-2013 GL-Class and add Mercedes' potent 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. Here, the fire-breathing eight-pot produces 550 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, meaning the big, all-wheel-drive SUV can sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 4.9 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Start/stop is standard with this engine, and all that grunt is routed to the ground via Merc's seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission. Visual cues like more pronounced front air vents topped with LED running lamps set the GL63 apart from its lesser kin, as do the aluminum trim on the lower front fascia and aggressive-looking 21-inch five-spoke wheels that hide new red brake calipers. As you would expect, the interior is fitted with sporty upgrades like a new steering wheel, AMG sport seats and leather-wrapped everything. Pricing has yet to be announced, though we fully expect it to command well over $100,000. Scroll down for the full details in Merc's press blast.Continue reading Mercedes-Benz releases 2013 GL63 AMG details for U.S.Mercedes-Benz releases 2013 GL63 AMG details for U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 May 2012 04:00:00 EST. History will be made at the 2012 TT Zero. A preview.
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, UK, Racing Rising out of the chilly waters of the Irish sea, the Isle of Man is paradise for those who consider the world's most dangerous motorcycle racing circuit to be nirvana. Once again, it is also the setting for the TT Zero: a one-lap race around the 37.7 Snaefell mountain course for all-electrics that pushes the edge of what's possible with battery-powered bikes. This year, history is sure to be made as the clean, quiet(er) machines finally break the ton - that is to say, exceed an average lap speed of 100 miles per hour. Besides a place in history, the fastest team will also claim a check for £10,000 (U.S. $15,660 at today's rates). Last year, Michael Rutter was, effectively, unchallenged when he just missed the mark for Team Segway MotoCzysz with an achingly-close 99.64 mph. This time around, as many as 18 riders could be vying for glory. We've got a preview of who's coming to party.Continue reading History will be made at the 2012 TT Zero. Video: Why the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing is so damn special, as described by an owner
Filed under: Classics, Performance, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury The phrase "instant classic" gets thrown around a lot these days, and applied to all sorts of mediocre stuff, from mass produced retro muscle cars to Italian exotics that are astonishing only by virtue of price. Truth be told, you can probably count the numbers of cars that have ever been deserving of such a label on one hand (and perhaps have a finger or two left over). Certainly the Mercedes-Benz 300SL is one of the few. First introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show and produced for only four years, the amazing "Gullwing" is as shocking a sight to behold today as it was some six decades ago. Seeing this icon on the street was rare even in period, as Mercedes sold fewer than 1,500. Today, with values in the $800,000 range, Gullwings are more often than not ogled from afar or treated with care more befitting a Faberge egg than a 160-mile-per-hour sports car. That circumstance only makes this four-minute video all that much more wonderful, as it is likely the best modern footage of a 300SL extant. With plenty of artistic camerawork and excellent sound recording of the direct-injected 3-liter six at full throttle, we're betting you'll want to watch it twice. Hearing the car's unidentified owner talk about owning and driving it made us want to cheer a little, as he's our kind of car guy, someone who feels that cars were meant to be driven and enjoyed rather than locked away in a museum.Scroll down to watch the full video, and here's to hoping that maybe director Josh Clason might cut together an extended version.Continue reading Why the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing is so damn special, as described by an ownerWhy the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing is so damn special, as described by an owner originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 19:45:00 EST. Ram Runner takes on Raptor in Duel in the Desert [w/video]
Filed under: Aftermarket, Motorsports, Performance, Truck, Videos, Ford, Off-Road, Ram Our friends at Pickuptrucks.com have pitted two serious off-road bruisers against one another in a desert throw down. The Mopar Ram Runner and Ford F-150 SVT Raptor locked horns in a battle for supremacy wherein both trucks had to tackle a five-mile desert course. The truck to set the best time over several runs came away the victor. The track snaked a loop around the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area and featured everything from washed-out river basins and rutted trails to more civilized gravel roads. Both trucks started at a stand still in 4WD high. Not surprisingly, Pickuptrucks.com turned to a professional driver to handle the wheel work. Chad Ragland stepped up to the task. The guy's spent the last few years putting Trophy Trucks through the ringer in the SCORE racing series, and he's netted podium finishes in competitions like the San Felipe 250 and the Baja 1000. So, did the aftermarket Mopar take the gold or the bone-stock Raptor take the edge? Each truck ran the course a total of four times, and the site broke down each section of the course based on terrain, and both trucks took home two sections, but it was the Ram Runner that came out on top with an overall time of 6 minutes 25 seconds. The F-150 SVT Raptor, meanwhile, took a full 33 seconds longer to do the deed, winding up with a final time of 6 minutes, 58 seconds. Of course, there's the little issue of pricing differentiation between these two monsters. But we'll leave that to you to debate. Check out the full write up here, and be sure to watch the recap video below for yourself. While you're there, you can also read a self-congratulatory press release from Mopar.Continue reading Ram Runner takes on Raptor in Duel in the Desert [w/video]Ram Runner takes on Raptor in Duel in the Desert [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 18:57:00 EST.
Share Tweet Fotos espía: Chevrolet Spin, a medio camino entre un familiar y un monovolumen originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Wed, 30 May 2012 18:15:00 EST. Report: Lexus GX to go unibody, gain turbo power?
Filed under: SUV, Lexus, Toyota, Rumormill, Design/Style, Luxury Add another one to the endangered list. The number of traditional body-on-frame SUVs has been dwindling as manufacturers replace them with crossovers, which is the direction the Lexus GX 460 is heading. According to Ward's Auto, the GX will likely be supplanted by a unibody, three-row crossover at the end of its current lifecycle.Toyota introduced the current Lexus GX in 2010, at the same time it also redesigned the 4Runner, on which the Lexus model is based. If the GX is shifted to a unibody platform, that could mean that Toyota would do similarly with the 4Runner, or the two vehicles could diverge and the GX could assume the underpinnings of another model. This is mere speculation, but Toyota could shift the GX to the Highlander platform that is currently shared with the Lexus RX. Since the RX is not available in a three-row model, the move would allow the GX to retain its third row as a differentiator without upsetting the successful formula of the RX, Lexus' best-seller. Regardless of what Toyota decides to do with the GX and 4Runner, Ward's says the company is also investigating the use of turbocharged four-cylinder engines in Lexus products. Since Toyota already has one of the best engines in the world in its direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 that sits under the hood of most Lexus models, we wouldn't expect the brand to introduce a turbo four any time soon, at least not in its volume products.Lexus GX to go unibody, gain turbo power? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 18:14:00 EST. Tac Motors will have MotoCzysz make electric-SUV powertrain
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, South/Latin America Brazil-based Tac Motors has reached an agreement for electric motorcycle maker MotoCzysz to make the electric powertrain for Tac's new electric SUV, the eStark. The agreement is worth about $27 million and will involve MotoCzysz making 3,600 powertrains - each about the size of a suitcase - per year for the new four-wheel-drive model. The eStark is particularly suited for electric-drive because of its light weight due to fiberglass panels and plastic covering. No specifics were disclosed in regards to power of single-charge range, though the system, called the D1g1tal Dr1ve, will include components such as an oil pump, heat exchange system and other electronics. The Stark, whose conventional version is powered by a Fiat turbodiesel, is about 161 inches long, or about two feet longer than a Suzuki Samurai, in case anyone remembers those.Continue reading Tac Motors will have MotoCzysz make electric-SUV powertrainTac Motors will have MotoCzysz make electric-SUV powertrain originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 30 May 2012 18:02:00 EST. Report: California 9/11 license plate funds used to shore up deficit
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal We've never really understood the logic behind purchasing a specialized license plate to fund some sort of cause. Wouldn't it make more sense to just send your money directly to whatever organization is championing the issue and slap a bumper sticker on your car next to the standard plate? Indeed, California drivers who paid for a special 9/11 memorial plate might consider this option the next time they get out their checkbook at the DMV. Because according to an Associated Press report, the state has not been making good on its promises to use the money collected through sales of the special plates to fund scholarships for children of 9/11 victims and underwrite anti-terrorism initiatives. Of the $15 million collected through sales of the plates, $3 million has been used to fill holes in the state budget, paying for programs that have little or nothing to do with terrorism. Further, the state stopped funding the scholarship program seven years ago, while continuing to advertise the plates as a benefit to children of 9/11 victims, according to the report. It has since updated its website to remove references to the scholarship program. The memorial license plates cost $50 and then $40 to renew each year, and were introduced in 2002. Over 200,000 plates have been purchased or renewed since then, according to the report. While each of the plates reads "We will never forget," apparently state agencies who have spent the money on routine operations have. "They are not following the spirit and intent of the legislation," Herb Wesson, the former speaker of the California Assembly and author of the license plate bill told the AP.California 9/11 license plate funds used to shore up deficit originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 17:13:00 EST.
Official: Volkswagen Scirocco GTS commemorates 30-year anniversary of original
Filed under: Performance, Etc., Europe, Hatchback, Volkswagen, Design/Style It's been 30 years since the very first Volkswagen Scirocco GTS rolled off the assembly line. Featuring little more than a slightly reworked front valance and some trippy decal work, the original Scirocco GTS was likely most notable for the fact that it was the first in the family to rock a blacked-out B-pillar. Now Volkswagen is paying homage to the machine with a new Scirocco GTS. Unveiled at the Auto Mobil International, the modern hatch rocks the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, complete with 210 horsepower, as the rest of the Scirocco range. A set of racing stripes spread from hood to lift gate lend the car a bit of sportiness, but the biggest changes can be found on the front and rear fascias. Volkswagen tweaked both bumper covers with a unique design, and a new set of flared side skirts are part of the package as well. GTS trim also comes with those flashy five-spoke 18-inch wheels, and the keen-eyed among you may have spotted the familiar roof spoiler and rear diffuser. Both are lifted from the Scirocco R. Ram pickup leads group of Most Dangerous Cars In America
Filed under: Truck, Safety, Crossover, Chevrolet, Dodge, Jeep, Mazda, Suzuki Take a vehicle's Insurance Institute for Highway Safety score, throw it into a data pot that includes Consumer Reports ratings, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash safety results and J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study numbers, mix thoroughly, then pour out the most dangerous vehicle on the road today: The Ram pickup truck. The website 24/7 Wall St. created this analysis to reveal the models with consistent quality problems and poor safety scores. All of the vehicles scored poorly in one area or another in crash testing, typically side or rear impact tests. They all scored badly in rollover testing, except the Jeep Wrangler. In order, the best of the worst are: 1. Dodge Ram 2. Chevrolet Colorado Super Cab 3. Mazda CX-7 4. Mazda CX-9 5. Nissan Pathfinder 6. Jeep Wrangler 7. Suzuki SX4 And while the data may speak volumes, it doesn't translate into poor sales, 24/7 Wall St. noted. "In fact, sales of all models are up from last year," the site stated. 24/7 Wall St. did not reveal the safest vehicles on the road today using the same data, but all it has to do is turn its list upside down.Ram pickup leads group of Most Dangerous Cars In America originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 14:58:00 EST. Marchionne: We're only making Fiat 500 EV because California's forcing us
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chrysler, Fiat, North America It's a near-endless tale, the story of the all-electric Fiat 500. Whether you're looking back at 2010, 2011 or earlier in 2012, there's been reports and claims and stories. Today, there's more.Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne recently spoke to the media about his companies' fuel-efficiency efforts, saying that hybrids and natural gas-powered vehicles will be coming by 2017. On the electric front, the Fiat 500 EV will be introduced in North America later this year, Marchionne said, admitting the car was being built for two main reasons: first, because California's ZEV mandates require it and, second, so Chrysler engineers learn more about electric powertrains. That sure makes it sound like Chrysler is years behind other companies, given that others have EVs on the market already. We know that Chrysler made a splash with the ENVI vehicles in 2008, but it's been relatively quiet since then. The Fiat EV is not going to be a financial windfall. Marchionne recently said (again) that Fiat "will lose money on every car we make." The car could lose Fiat as much as $10,000 per vehicle.Marchionne: We're only making Fiat 500 EV because California's forcing us originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 30 May 2012 15:53:00 EST. Spy Shots: Ford Fiesta sedan facelift spotted wearing squiggles
Filed under: Spy Photos, Budget, Sedan, Ford While the sedan is hardly our favorite Fiesta - that would be the forthcoming, Europe-only ST - as long as Ford still feels the need to sell a four-door sedan we suppose it's only fair that it get the same updates as the hatchback. We saw spy shots of the hatch back in March, but now we've got images of the sedan as well. Our spy shooters caught the Fiesta near the Nürburgring, and it looks to be sporting the same new headlights with integrated LEDs, new fascias, and a different hood design, just like the hatch. We're still hearing the same rumors about the Fiesta getting Ford's new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost. Check out all the high-res images in our gallery.Ford Fiesta sedan facelift spotted wearing squiggles originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 15:44:00 EST.
Continue reading El Honda Brio tendrá motor diéselEl Honda Brio tendrá motor diésel originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Wed, 30 May 2012 15:12:00 EST. Report: Ram pickup leads group of Most Dangerous Cars In America
