Motorsports: 2012 Monaco Grand Prix does the full Monte Carlo [spoilers]
Filed under: Motorsports, EuropeFormula One is boring, say the detractors. It's always the same drivers and teams who win. Nothing new ever happens. That's what they said, at least, until this season. With an unprecedented six world champions on the grid holding a total of fourteen titles between them, this season has been one big wild card. So far five different drivers from five different teams took the checkered flags in the five races so far. And not all of them rank among the aforementioned champions. But if the season has been unpredictable until now, would Monaco - traditionally the least predictable grand prix of all - prove even more so? Keep reading to find out.Continue reading 2012 Monaco Grand Prix does the full Monte Carlo [spoilers]2012 Monaco Grand Prix does the full Monte Carlo [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 May 2012 23:43:00 EST. Video: A sentimental goodbye to the last Ford Ranger
Filed under: Budget, Truck, Etc., Plants/Manufacturing, Videos, Ford It's been more than five months since the Twin Cities Assembly Plant in St. Paul, Minnesota went dark. The facility produced Ford vehicles for nearly 100 years before finally being closed as part of ongoing restructuring. The closure coincided with the production of the very last North American Ford Ranger. As you may recall, that machine is currently in service with Orkin. The website HappyWrenching.com has worked up a video commemorating the plant's final days in operation, and the clip gives us all a look into the atmosphere surrounding the pickup as it rolled off of the assembly line. Well shot and with plenty of sentimental music, the video gives us yet another reason to miss the old Ranger. Check out the clip for yourself. Bring a hankie.Continue reading A sentimental goodbye to the last Ford RangerA sentimental goodbye to the last Ford Ranger originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 May 2012 20:02:00 EST. Report: Nissan announces Russian expansion
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Nissan, RussiaNissan wants to be big in Russia. Right now, the brand brand lays claim to 5.9 percent of the Russian market, and the plan is to increase share to ten percent by 2016. That means moving nearly 500,000 vehicles a year, more than triple the 161,000 total units moved in 2011. Nissan plans to muscle up its production at its St. Petersburg plant, doubling output to 100,000 vehicles for 2014. With upgrades to the press and plastics shops, the St. Petersburg facility will produce five different models at the same time, including the Qashqai, Teana, X-Trail and Murano. The revived Datsun brand will also figure into the plans. Datsun is being ramped up in growth markets as a low-cost boutique product developed and produced locally to appeal to an emerging customer base. Ex-Sierra Club chair: U.S. EV makers should adopt cell-phone sales model
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, North America, USA Makers of electric vehicles geared towards U.S. consumers would be wise to adopt a sales model similar to that of mobile phones, in which drivers would pay a set fee for unlimited electric charging, ex-Sierra Club Chairman Carl Pope wrote in an editorial for EV World. Pope suggested that automakers should provide a six-year recharging contract to EV buyers who'd then pay $150 a month for recharging privileges. That would pencil out to about equal to refueling costs of a 25-mile-per-gallon car that's driven 15,000 miles a year, but at a relative bargain of $3 a gallon, Pope wrote. Such a program would help minimize up-front vehicle purchase costs - a major issue since electric vehicles often cost much more than similarly profiled gas-powered cars - as opposed to using an estimate of total lifecycle costs to sway purchasers. Currently, the Mitsubishi i is the lowest-priced full EV on the market, and it starts at $29,125. Pope says the U.S. automotive industry risks losing its technological leadership in electric-vehicle development by not adopting such a plan because the U.S. has lower gas prices and requires longer driving distances than a country like France, putting EVs at a competitive disadvantage compared to other countries. The thing is, Better Place is already trying to make a cell-phone-like plan work for EVs, but it is not having tremendous success in the U.S.Ex-Sierra Club chair: U.S. EV makers should adopt cell-phone sales model originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 27 May 2012 16:27:00 EST. Report: Lotus boss Dany Bahar suspended by Malaysian owners
Filed under: Performance, Europe, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Lotus, LuxuryDRB-Hicom has suspended Lotus CEO Dany Bahar pending an investigation into the executive's conduct. While the sports car manufacturer's parent company has declined to comment on exactly which facet of Bahar's conduct is in question, The Telegraph reports the inquiry may be related to expenses. DRB-Hicom is said to have confiscated Bahar's laptop and mobile phone as part of the investigation. Reportedly, the executive rented in two homes in Norwich, both paid for by Lotus. As you may recall, DRB-Hicom purchased Lotus parent company Proton in January. The sportscar manufacturer's future has been uncertain since then, though Proton has made it clear it has no intention of selling the company in the near future. Day-to-day operations will now be handled by three representatives of the Lotus parent companies, including Dato' Lukman Ibrahim, Mohd Khalid Yusof and Aslam Farikullah.Lotus boss Dany Bahar suspended by Malaysian owners originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 May 2012 15:06:00 EST. Auctions: $1.9M Zagato coupe highlights Bonhams sale at Aston Martin Works
Filed under: Classics, Auctions, Aston Martin, UK Every year Bonhams holds an auction in the hallowed halls of Aston Martin Works, the restoration shop on the site of the company's old Newport Pagnell factory. A number of rare and significant Astons crossed the block at the recently expanded facility. At the top of the list was a DB4GT Zagato "Sanction II" coupe (pictured above). While the original collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato netted nineteen DB4 GTs between 1961 and 1963, the two firms had planned for 23. Thirty years later, Aston revived the project and sent four unfinished chassis down to Zagato's headquarters in Milan and had the series completed. It was the fourth and last of these "Sanction II" coupes - previously owned by music industry manager Tony Smith - that was sold this week at Newport Pagnell, fetching a record £1.2 million - just under $1.9 million at today's rates. Alongside the pristine Zagato coupe, Bonhams auctioned off a 1962 DB4 Vantage convertible for £611,900 ($960k) and a 1963 DBS convertible for £488,700 ($767k). A one-of-a-kind 1971 DBS shooting brake commissioned by a Scottish nobleman and outfitted for fishing went for £345,000 ($540k) - considerably more than its £60k pre-sale estimate. Other highlights included a 1994 Virage Volante once used by the Prince of Wales and a 1994 Virage owned by boxing champ Lennox Lewis. Overall, the event brought in £6.5 million - equivalent to over ten million dead presidents. You can read the press release below for more details from both Aston Martin Works and Bonhams.Continue reading $1.9M Zagato coupe highlights Bonhams sale at Aston Martin Works$1.9M Zagato coupe highlights Bonhams sale at Aston Martin Works originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 May 2012 14:03:00 EST.
Report: Ford watching Europe's reaction to Mustang in new ads
Filed under: Coupe, Europe, Marketing/Advertising, Ford, UKFord doesn't sell its Mustang in Europe, but that hasn't stopped fans from the UK to Poland from figuring out ways to procure one. The Mustang is playing a part in Ford's "Go Further" ad campaign - which showcases the global portfolio and is aimed at changing perceptions by being discreet with Ford branding - and that gets air time in Europe. As for featuring a car that Europeans can't buy in its commercials, the company told Autocar, "We are very proud of all these products and are interested to see what European consumers, who may not be familiar with these models, think of them." Ford says it's watching European reaction to "Go Further" and will "carefully examine" what the campaign might highlight as a profitable opportunity. Ultimately, that's a bit of non-promissory boilerplate that stands for, "We've got a guy on it, we'll let you know if he comes up with anything," but at least it's more official recognition of the Mustang's European favor. Ford's embrace of social media is well established, so if Europeans want the Mustang to show up in Ford delaers over there, now could be the time to beat the Facebook drums even louder.Ford watching Europe's reaction to Mustang in new ads originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 May 2012 12:03:00 EST.
