Should there be a fossil fuel moratorium? Some scientists say yes
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Solar, Carbon Offset, Legislation and Policy, Carbon Capture Climate change was barely mentioned during October presidential debates, but that doesn't mean the public doesn't care. After all, climate change affected Hurricane Sandy, and that got some media coverage. Some analysts say climate change is just part of historic weather patterns that humans have little say over but most scientists say humans play a big part in the matter, in part through our increasing consumption of fossil fuels. The power sources required for generating electricity play a large part in CO2 emissions, and it looks like that will be increasing. What would it take to change over energy power to renewables such as solar, wind or hydropower instead of coal or natural gas? Three experts on renewable energy recently published a letter in Nature that calls for an immediate moratorium on adding to the fossil fuel infrastructure. Keith Barnham, of the Physics Department at Imperial College London; Kaspar Knorr, of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology, in Kassel, Germany; and Massimo Mazzer of the CNR-IMEM, in Parma, Italy, write in "Progress towards an all-renewable electricity supply" that they believe that solar could fuel all the world's electricity power plants as early as 2020 using existing technology, a little energy storage and subsidies that might be no higher than Feed In Tariff structures being used in Germany. The scientists also question whether Germany's drive toward renewables has been as costly as critics claim. They argue that it has actually brought down the cost of peak energy prices. For Treehugger writer Sami Grover, it's a simple equation: reduce fossil fuel consumption and transition energy over to renewables. Grover writes," a huge part of the climate change battle is simply defining what is possible... We are learning each day how massively underpriced fossil fuels are in the face of the destruction they cause." There are activists out there trying to do something about climate change, like protestors occupying power stations or "hack-tivists" tweaking Big Oil. Along with generating electricity, the climate change implications for cars are massive and play a role in several global automakers building fossil fuel reduction into their sustainability campaigns. Will all of this be enough? According to Grover, "It's time to aim big or give up." An end to expanding fossil fuel infrastructure certainly fits into one of those two categories, and it's not giving up.Should there be a fossil fuel moratorium? Video: Can you lift a car using two interleaved phone books?
Filed under: Videos Friction, good people, is a wonderfully powerful force. It crops up in the automotive word all the time, be it associated with tires, brakes and engine internals, or even the micro-tug of a rubberized surface against the tips of your fingers. And the video seen here is certainly all about friction - and it involves a vehicle - but not in any of the straightforward ways we've just dashed off. No, the friction that makes this video so wild is that which is created by thousands of very thin sheets of paper from a telephone book, intentionally interwoven, when a force is used to try to pull them apart. You might guess that this trick is hard to do with your own two hands, but when you start to understand that this video involves a car (a Rover 45), a pretty large crane and a set of phone books, well... you should watch. By the way, if you're as up on your geek-culture as we are, you'll certainly recognize the bones of this trick from an episode of MythBusters. Check out the second bonus video for another great set of friction demonstrations. Science, man!Continue reading Can you lift a car using two interleaved phone books? Can you lift a car using two interleaved phone books? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 19:59:00 EST. GM profits threatened by glut of pickups
Filed under: Car Buying, Truck, Plants/Manufacturing, Chevrolet, GM, GMC, Earnings/FinancialsAutomotive News reports that General Motors may slash production or ramp up discounts in order to deal with an oversupply of pickup trucks. GM currently has more than double the standard supply of pickups, and the vehicles are threatening to dampen the automaker's profits for 2013. Typically, automakers try to sustain a 60- to 75-day supply of vehicles, but GM is currently loaded with a 139-day supply, as of last month. At the end of November, the automaker was sitting on 245,853 units. The manufacturer says that it will adjust production accordingly before laying any incentives on the profitable pickups. Even so, there's some concern that the inventory swell could hurt the roll-out of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM actually began slowly stepping back production in August, but it's clear the company will take further action as it heads toward the end of the year and into the next. Analysts predict the automaker could reduce pickup manufacturing by nearly half in the first quarter of 2013. That still may not be enough to keep GM from laying extra cash on the Silverado and GMC Sierra. While the company's incentive spending was down in November compared to the same month in 2011, both the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 saw double-digit percentage increases in sales last month while the Silverado and Sierra numbers slid compared to a year prior. Incentive spending could help move more trucks and add some balance to the GM inventory surge.GM profits threatened by glut of pickups originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 18:44:00 EST. Video: Haggerty profiles Sandy survivors and their classic cars
Filed under: Classics, Videos One of the harsh realities encountered by some in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is the damage done to their beloved classic cars. Such a story may not make it to CNN, so Hagerty Insurance set about chronicling the efforts by several owners to preserve their classics during the storm. One owner from Staten Island lost a 1977 Ford F-250 Custom pickup. He tried desperately to save his truck, attempting to start it as the waters rose around the vehicle. At one point, he says the water started pouring into the truck. It eventually became impossible to open the doors, and had to crawl out the window. For him and others electrical, brakes and other systems failed when the brackish water rose around the cars. Some may label the pining over a lost classic insensitive, given the larger issue of rebuilding and reclaiming these costal areas. However, these cars are as much a part of their memories as baby pictures or family heirlooms. There are personal connections with these vintage automobiles that may have been lost forever. This video just goes to show the powerful bond that some owners have with their treasured classics.Continue reading Haggerty profiles Sandy survivors and their classic carsHaggerty profiles Sandy survivors and their classic cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 19:32:00 EST. Official: Volvo V60 PHEV get five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP [w/video]
Filed under: Diesel, EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Volvo, Videos Volvo continues to take kudos for making the safest cars on European roads, with its diesel-engine V60 plug-in hybrid earning the highest score ever for a PHEV given by Euro NCAP. The Euro NCAP tested the all-new V60 PHEV through a series of crash tests and give it a five star rating; if this were in the US, it would be quite similar to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crash test rating system. But why take our word for it when you can see a video below. The trick here for Volvo was designing safety measures for a car with a heavy battery pack weighing it down. The structure had to be modified and reinforced with a controlled deformation to bring up the safety level. "The Euro NCAP score demonstrates that the ingenious V60 Plug-in Hybrid features the same outstanding safety level as the standard car," said Jan Ivarsson, senior manager safety strategy & requirements at Volvo Car Group, in a statement. Fuel consumption was also a priority in the design. The V60 comes in three driving modes: Pure, Hybrid and Power. In Hybrid mode, fuel consumption is reduced to just 1.8 liters per 100 kilometer (31 miles per gallon) and 48 grams per kilometer of CO2. As of late September, the first 1,000 units of the 2013 model year V60 had been purchased. A few months ago, the all-new 2013 Volvo V40 took some of the top scores in crash tests that Euro NCAP has ever awarded. The car ended up with strong performance in all four crash test categories - adult occupant, child occupant, pedestrian and safety assist.Continue reading Volvo V60 PHEV get five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP [w/video]Volvo V60 PHEV get five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 18:04:00 EST. Opinion: Even in a down economy, Rolls-Royce is on a roll
Filed under: Sedan, Rolls-Royce, LuxuryLimited Volume, Big Margins Spell Success Bigger isn't always better, especially when it comes to selling super luxury. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös expects the British automaker to again post a record year, despite the economic troubles in Europe and weak growth in both the US and China. "It is not all doom and gloom out there," Müller-Ötvös explains, noting that the declining sales in Europe and elsewhere have been offset by good performance for the marque in the Middle East, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Russia. You won't see an SUV from Rolls-Royce. The key to this success is remaining focused on its strengths by limiting itself to what it knows best, very expensive cars and cars alone. As a result, you won't see an SUV from Rolls-Royce. "Our clear strategy is to stick to this segment of 200,000 Euros and up," he explains, adding because of the limited volume of about 3,500 cars per year, "we are not in a situation where we need to fill up excess capacity in the plant." Matt DeLorenzo is the former editor-in-chief of Road & Track and has covered the auto industry for 35 years, including stints at Automotive News and AutoWeek. He has authored books including VW's New Beetle, Chrysler's Modern Concept Cars, and Corvette Dynasty.
GM Truck Stock Threatening Profits as New Model LoomsCatching a problem early usually means avoiding it, but in GM's case it's looking like the opposite will prove true. With three plants closed this year for retooling, things got tricky for General Motors. It needs to walk the line between letting its truck supply run dry and saturating its dealer network with more pickups... more

Report: Jeep Grand Cherokee headed for Detroit reveal on diesel power
Filed under: SUV, Jeep, Off-Road Time to quit your bellyaching and pony up your pennies, Jeep fans. Chrysler has announced the Jeep Grand Cherokee will bow with a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine in the first quarter of next year. The engine yields 237 horsepower and an impressive 406 pound-feet of torque, and all that twist shows up from 1,800 rpm on. If you're counting, that's 16 lb-ft more than the 5.7-liter V8. Expect to see it bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission. As you may recall, this isn't the first time we've heard this news. Jeep CEO Mike Manley let the news slip while speaking with Ward's Auto at the LA Auto Show, and said if buyer feedback is any indication, the new model should see healthy sales. Manley also pointed to the now deceased Liberty diesel, which the executive said that enjoyed a faithful, if small following. Odds are we'll hear more about pricing and fuel economy when the diesel Grand Cherokee gets an official unveil at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.Jeep Grand Cherokee headed for Detroit reveal on diesel power originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 16:29:00 EST. So far, Tesla says it has built around 20,000 Model S units at its California production facility, though analysts say the ability to repeatedly generate a positive cash flow would go a long way toward the company's evolution into a "sustainable operating entry." Opinion: Mazda has right mix to chase 120,000 more US sales
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Mazda The Mazda MX-5 Miata was named to Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for the eighth year in a row and for the fourteenth time overall. The CX-5 tops or comes in as runner-up on every AOL Autos staff poll we take on compact crossovers. The Mazda3 is a perennial favorite among auto critics. That's three clear, unquestioned winners in the Mazda showroom. So, why does Mazda seem to struggle sometimes for recognition and clarity in the marketplace? For that, I chatted with Mazda North American Operations President, Jim O'Sullivan, who has run the outfit since 2003. O'Sullivan, a former Ford sales and marketing executive who came to Mazda from Dearborn, MI when Ford owned a controlling stake in Mazda, is one of the quieter, but very menchy, leaders in the industry whose longevity in the job speaks to the stability of Mazda.Continue reading Mazda has right mix to chase 120,000 more US salesMazda has right mix to chase 120,000 more US sales originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 15:30:00 EST.
