The 36-year-old drag racer has become the first African American to win a major auto racing title after watching his teammate, Tony Schumacher, lose in the final round of the weekend at the Auto Club Finals in Pomona, California. Brown, just 67 points ahead of Schumacher before the final race, was watching from the sidelines due to a loss in the first round on Sunday that also left him with burns on his hands and feet. Schumacher could have stolen the title from Brown had he won the final race of the weekend, but he lost to Brandon Bernstein by 0.01 seconds. Brown, who started his racing career on motorcycles, switched over to Top Fuel in 2008 and earned the pole in his very first race, which took place at none other than Pomona. In a few weeks, of course.A123 Systems will likely receive offers from at least four companies when the bankrupt lithium-ion battery pack maker starts receiving bids on December 6. Johnson Controls and China-based Wanxiang Group Corp. will likely be the lead bidders, while Japan's NEC Corp. and Germany's Siemens AG may also jump into the fray, Reuters reports. Wanxiang, which has made a confidential bid for A123, has drawn concern from US Senators John Thune of South Dakota (R) and Chuck Grassley of Iowa (R), who have asked the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to look into the possibility of a Chinese company getting access to US military contracts. A123 has received about $130 million in US Department of Energy grant funds. A123 recently received US Bankruptcy Court permission to borrow $50 million from Wanxiang. This is the National Sleep Foundation's Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has completed a new survey with data indicating that one in seven drivers between 16 and 24 have admitted to falling asleep while behind the wheel at least once in the last year alone. That's a lot more drowsy driving compared to only 1 in 10 of all drivers who said they nodded off while driving. While most people surveyed said sleepy drivers are a threat to public safety, at least 30 percent also admit they have recently driven while being tired enough that they struggled to keep their eyes open. "Unfortunately, most drivers underestimate the risks associated with drowsy driving and overestimate their ability to deal with it - that's a dangerous combination," says AAA Foundation President & CEO Peter Kissinger. "Research shows that fatigue impairs safe driving, with many symptoms causing drivers to behave in ways similar to those who are intoxicated," said AAA President & CEO Robert Darbelnet in the same press release. Think you're a better driver than those folks? The list of things that constitute drowsy driving include not noticing traffic signs, driving past your intended street/exit, difficulty keeping your eyes open, yawning frequently, lane drifting and daydreaming. AAA has a few suggestions to help you stay awake. Get plenty sleep the night before a long trip, avoid traveling whey you usually sleep, take a break every two hours and travel with someone who can take a turn driving. And such is the case with the forthcoming X4 - a new crossover reportedly set to rival the Porsche Macan in terms of style, packaging and performance. The production X4 will reportedly launch in the United States in early 2014, and according to Autoweek, it will first be shown in concept form at the Detroit Auto Show next January. The X4 will share its platform and underpinnings with the second-generation X3 (pictured above), and powertrains are rumored to be the same, as well. The X3 is currently offered with BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and larger 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. To differentiate the X4 from the X3, it will utilize completely different styling and packaging. The front end will be more aggressive and pronounced, and the roofline will have a more rakish (read: coupe-like) slope. Think of the X4/X3 relationship as a smaller version of what BMW has done with the X6/X5. But, as if the X4 niche itself weren't narrow enough, Autoweek states that BMW will also be bringing a higher-performance X4 M to market, despite the fact that there has never been a production X3 M. The X4 M will likely use a specially tuned version of the new turbocharged six-cylinder engine that's expected to debut in the next M3. A diesel version of the X4 M - using the 3.0-liter tri-turbo six found in other European M cars - is also reportedly in the works, though it won't likely be offered in North America. During a rare interview - with an even rarer admission of fault - Piëch made it clear his company should not have let the talented designer head for Kia, saying plainly, "We should not have let him go." But that wasn't the only revelation. Piëch will remain in his current position for at least another five to seven years in order to usher in the next-generation Volkswagen Golf - this, despite the fact that he's 75 years old and has already been at the top of the company for 18 years. More importantly, it appears as if VW isn't through snapping up brands. Piëch has mentioned his interest in Alfa Romeo in the past, and the chairman has said there's room in the stable for another nameplate that needs a little restructuring. Like most automakers, Alfa Romeo has struggled amidst the European recession, and its business picture wasn't exactly rosy before the economic downturn. Renault parece que podría ver amenazadas las ventas del pequeño urbanita eléctrico si Honda decide lanzar también en Europa su Commuter Micro, también "cero emisiones" y de dimensiones muy recortadas. El Commuter Micro quizás pueda pecar de un diseño más convencional y clásico, si bien para muchos esto puede ser algo decisivo en el factor de compra al transmitir una sensación más real al ojo de "coche" y no de "juguete". A couple of months later, the same Passat model won a mid-size comparo from Motor Trend against the Hyundai Sonata GLS and Toyota Camry LE. Earlier this year, the VW won an even larger C/D comparison test, beating the Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Accord EX-L, Sonata SE, Kia Optima EX and Camry SE. That's a convincing string of victories, but they're all against the old hotness. So C/D put the Passat 2.5 SE against the freshest mid-sized competitors, the all-new-for-2013 versions of the Ford Fusion SE EcoBoost, Honda Accord EX and Nissan Altima 2.5 SV, and, well, you'll have to see if the German's enormous back seat and good chassis were enough to keep it on top. A Fuji Electric fast charger is now available on ChargePoint at the Residence Inn by Marriott in San Juan Capistrano, CA. It's owned and operated by EV-integrator Evoasis and is open to the public at the hotel located along Interstate 5. Fuji Electric's DC Quick Chargers have been installed in hundreds of locations around the world, and this one marks the company's fourth operational fast charger in the US. The Residence Inn charger is a 25-kilowatt station that can fully replenish an electric vehicle's empty battery within 60 minutes. As part of the ChargePoint network, users can access phone applications on their iPhone or Android and locate the charger with turn-by-turn directions. They can also book a reservation over their phone to charge their car. Drivers can locate stations and make, view and cancel a reservation time slot from a smart phone. Other features are available to drivers to help with trip planning, manage the cost of charging and find and operate other public ChargePoint-enabled stations. Most of ChargePoint's charging installations have been Level 2, 240-volt stations through the program funded by ChargePoint America and the Department of Energy. The Detroit News reports gray market buyers in the Asian country are snapping up the trucks at the equivalent of $160,000, or nearly three times the MSRP here in the States. Analysts credit the boom to shifting consumer perceptions. Chinese buyers have typically view pickups as utilitarian tools instead of lifestyle purchases, but that's changing. The Detroit News reports buyers in China are showing more interest in specialty vehicles like the SVT Raptor. Vehicles like those from General Motors' Hummer family laid the groundwork ten years ago, and when the Raptor bowed in 2010, Chinese enthusiasm for the truck exploded on the internet. Importers are so keen to demand for the pickups that they've imported too many - prices are just now beginning to fall from their lofty heights. The system may arrive as a direct replacement to the aging Integrated Motor Assist series, and it's actually comprised of three different systems: Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive, Intelligent Multi Mode Drive/Plug-In and Super Handling - All Wheel Drive. Why three different systems? Because their capability, complexity and cost will vary depending on the size of the vehicle and its intended purpose. We have already tested the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi Mode Drive/Plug-In on the 2014 Honda Accord PHEV. This system features a hybrid-specific engine and an electronic CVT with two built-in electric motors, and it sounds like this setup will be offered with and without plug-in capabilities. With this system, drivers will be able to use three different drive modes (EV, Engine and Hybrid) depending on the conditions and the desired dynamic. EV Drive mode maximizes use of electricity to propel the car, Hybrid Drive uses the engine to generate electricity for the motors and Engine Drive is for higher speeds where EV and Hybrid modes wouldn't be as efficient. Debuting on the forthcoming Acura RLX flagship sedan, the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system uses three electric motors to deliver optimal performance. It also features a direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Those are combined with an integrated motor used to power the front wheels and one motor at each rear wheel. The rear motors work independently of one another for better handling and torque distribution. Honda says this system will deliver V8-like performance with the fuel economy of a four cylinder. If all of that sounds familiar, that's because we drove a prototype of the architecture in a Honda Accord mule back in December of 2011. Finally, the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive uses the same seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox as the SH-AWD system, but this application will focus on improving the efficiency of small cars rather than worrying about performance. This transmission will be mated to a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine, and Honda claims combination will be 30-percent more efficient than current one-motor hybrid systems. We don't know just yet which car this system will debut in, but the diagram released by Honda shows it being use on what looks like a hatchback (like the Fit) or small crossover. | Posted: 12 Nov 2012 12:36 PM PST  Report: Explosion at Bombardier R&D facility in Quebec leaves two badly injured [w/video] Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Safety, Videos, CanadaBombardier has closed its research and development complex in Valcourt, Quebec following an overnight explosion late last week. Two employees were left with severe burns after the incident, including a security guard. Both were taken to a local hospital for treatment and remain in medically induced comas. According to reports, local police heard the explosion and saw a ball of fire shoot into the sky before seeing the two men run from the building. Police say the damage appears to have emanated from a research lab, but firefighters were able to quickly get the blaze under control. Law enforcement believes the fire was accidental, but a full-fledged investigation is currently underway. The complex is under construction as part of expansion efforts, and some have speculated the blast could have been caused by the work. There's no indication as to when the facility will reopen for business. In the interim, Bombardier has established a phone hotline to give employees and their family members information and support. Bombardier Recreational Products spun off from Bombardier in 2003. It manufactures Ski-Doo snowmobile and jet ski recreational products, as well as Evinrude outboard motors and some ATVs. Audi está cambiando su lenguaje estético a medida que cambia la forma en la que desarrolla sus coches. Viendo sus últimas creaciones, no lo parece. Cuesta diferenciar el A4 del A6 y vice versa, mientras que el nuevo A3 tiene un parecido más que razonable con el modelo que sustituye. Sin embargo, si nos fijamos en los últimos concept cars de la marca, algo está cambiando. Es cierto que conservan ese aire familiar y que los identifica indudablemente como Audi, pero también no es menos cierto que Wolfgang Egger está liderando un nuevo diseño donde el habitáculo es más coherente con el exterior. Ambas caras del mismo coche, exterior e interior, deben ser más coherentes entre ellas para así crear una identidad de marca todavía más completa. La primera muestra de esta estrategia se puede ver en el Audi Crosslane Coupé del pasado salón de París. El habitáculo del Crosslane está diseñado alrededor del conductor, con un salpicadero muy depurado, con sólo los controladores imprescindibles a la vista.
