| Posted: 06 Oct 2012 05:42 PM PDT  Video: Watch a Syracuse mall's owners race through it in go karts Filed under: Etc., Humor While some of you may have daydreamed about driving through a mall like the Blues Brothers, the owners of the Destiny USA mall in Syracuse, NY snatched a couple of go karts from the Pole Position Raceway located in their shopping center and actually did it. Bob Conjel and Bruce Kenan speed through the mall at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour in what seems to be a great way to promote their mall's current and pending enhancements. While it's clear that most of the stores are closed, there are still plenty of people walking around the mall. And at the 2:36 mark, we see that the new Volvos are in early this year. The duo slides into some drywall and even uses "stunt drivers" in the tighter areas as the karts blast through the mall's inner sanctum. All that's missing is Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" playing in the background. The video provided by the mall is only a minute and a half long, but Pole Position made one that' eight minutes in length. | Posted: 06 Oct 2012 03:37 PM PDT  Report: NHTSA probing Ford Escape over throttle issue Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety, Crossover, Ford According to the Associated Press, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is training its gaze on 2005-2012 Ford Escape. According to the report, the federal safety agency has opened a probe at the behest of the North Carolina Consumers Council, which petitioned for an investigation following a pair of complaints related to throttle issues. The council noted in its petition that Ford has previously acknowledged a problem with hesitation and stalling in Escape models, as it has issued a series of technical service bulletins to its dealer body to deal with the issue. The NHTSA inquiry is not a full-blown investigation at this time and there is no recall pending. Now, drivers of some Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicles are getting their own version of those signs, and it's likely they're actually happy about it, by comparison. General Motors' OnStar is testing a navigation app that will record how much it costs to charge a Volt at a particular time, and how those costs compare to home energy use. The app, called EcoHub, tracks home energy use and typical costs of energy coming from a particular local utility to provide an estimate on electric "fill-up" costs for the Volt. GM is testing the app at the Pecan Street housing community in Austin, Texas, and hopes to broaden the user base in the future. The app deployment is an expansion of a relationship between GM and Pecan Street that started in July. The 700-acre housing community had already been working with GM on tracking how the Volts are used and how far they're driven on a regular basis. The community is geared towards sustainable living, as you can read in GM's press release below. Ken Block's car begs to differ Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Hatchback, Ford, Racing If you've ever wondered about the "hybrid" in Ken Block's Ford Fiesta H.F.H.V. (Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle), then this video is definitely worth watching. After winning the Olympus Rally near Shelton, Washington, Block's Fiesta headed to Las Vegas for the fifth round of Global Rallycross (GRC). The same car is used in both racing series. As you'd imagine, racing on narrow dirt back roads Washington is very different than running on the mostly paved course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Aside from the chassis and most of the body components, the Ford Fiesta that raced on Sunday September 23 is almost completely different from the car that practiced on Thursday September 26. The entire powertrain gets swapped in favor of a setup making over 600 horsepower, and the front-mounted radiator is moved aft for the GRC event. To ensure proper air flow to it, different side vents and a vented liftgate are installed. The GRC car also gets bigger brakes and the proper wheel/tire combo. After three days of disassembly and reassembly, this Fiesta is ready for Rallycross. Sure, it'd probably be easier to just have a second, dedicated GRC car, but where's the fun in that? Ford's three-cylinder 1.0-liter Ecoboost engine collected one of Pop Mech's honors by providing power through turbocharging and fuel efficiency through its tiny displacement. While the internal combustion engine has been around for more than 100 years, it's not often that it undergoes such a dramatic improvement. "We placed the bar incredibly high when we set out to design this engine," said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president, Global Powertrain, in a news release. "We wanted to deliver eye-popping fuel economy, surprising performance, quietness and refinement - and all from a very small three-cylinder engine. GM's crash avoidance system is a big step toward creating self-driving cars. The system, which debuted in the GMC Terrain, uses a camera mounted near the rearview mirror. It follows the lines on the road to ensure the Terrain stays between them and can detect objects that might be in the way. And just to rub it in, the amazingly-low rider was constructed by a high school class. Students and teachers at the Okayama Sanyo High School in Asakuchi, Japan, call their little project the Mirai, which in Japanese means future. From the ground to the highest point on the car (not including driver), the single-seater measures 45.2 centimeters, or 17.7 inches. That's almost 6 centimeters lower than the previous record holder, the Flatmobile. But while the battery-powered Mirai looks like a car some of us would be willing to drive, the Flatmobile was a jet-powered, 100-mph, Batmobile replica built by Britain's Perrywinkle Customs. Harada Kazunari, Principal at Okayama Sanyo High School, says, "It can be frightening to drive MIRAI on a big street, especially when the speed goes over 40km/h because the road is very close to the driver's eye point. Also, you can feel afraid that you will be run over by other cars. So, we make it a rule, when we drive MIRAI on a busy street, to place a leading car to the front of MIRAI, and a guarding car in the rear." There could be more valet-parking jobs opening up - and ones that aren't just at expensive restaurants and private parties. Here's what Forbes contributor Jeff McMahon is suggesting, though we're not sure if he's being totally earnest. After speaking with ComEd's Mike McMahan, McMahon wrote that a jump in electric-vehicle sales could create EV-valet jobs. The idea is that many EV owners leave their cars parked and recharging all day at charging stations near work or at train stations, when in fact the vehicle may only need a couple of hours to "fill up." In the real world, this situation has already led to some altercations from EV owners who unplug other people's cars to get their electron fix - sometimes this becomes quite public. To solving the problem, in come the EV valets. These would be people who would be able to swap out fully-charged EVs for those waiting in line without the owners being there. No word on whether such a job would require a red bow tie and a black vest. If this isn't just a solution looking for a problem, the EV valet scenario is likely years away, given the current the rate of EV sales in the U.S. September sales numbers just came out, and while plug-in hybrids like the Chevrolet Volt and the Toyota Prius Plug-in each moved about 3,000 units last month. El protagonista de esta nueva entrega es el Opel Antara, un vehículo con el que la firma alemana pretendía conquistar el segmento de los todocamino medianos... y que sin embargo no ha conseguido alcanzar los objetivos marcados. Para el desarrollo del Antara, Opel contó con el apoyo de la filial surcoreana GM Daewoo. Ambas firmas debían sacar un producto competitivo con el que entrar en ese competido segmento sin que los precios se disparasen. La producción se llevaría a cabo en Corea del Sur para el mercado europeo y aunque la estética de ambos SUVs tenía que mantener el espíritu particular de cada marca, el apartado mecánico tendría que se común. | Posted: 06 Oct 2012 04:14 AM PDT  Nissan lanzará una versión de acceso del Leaf Filed under: Nissan, Híbridos, verdes y alternativos, Compactos Las ventas del Leaf no terminan de despegar en ningún mercado. Estados Unidos, Europa y Japón no están teniendo el tirón esperado, y los nipones están dispuestos a dar un golpe de mano para cambiar la situación. En Estados Unidos, con la llegada del restyling del Leaf en 2013 (cambio de aspecto menor que también veremos en Europa), llegará una nueva versión de acceso. La idea de Nissan es poder ofrecer un precio más recortado a base de eliminar parte del equipamiento de lujo prescindible del coche que ahora se comercializa. Y es que el Leaf, por más ayudas gubernamentales que tenga, sigue sin ser un producto "barato", aunque parte del sobrecoste lo recuperes en consumo de combustible. A estas modificaciones de equipamiento se agregarán dos novedades más: una mejora considerable en la autonomía, y la deslocalización de la producción, ya que el coche se fabricará en Estados Unidos, Europa y Japón.
