Posted: 20 Oct 2012 05:34 PM PDT Official: Domino's picks winning Ultimate Delivery Vehicle design concept Filed under: Design/Style, MISC Crowdsourcing has become a great tool for companies to create new products, and Domino's Pizza is using it to create a new signature delivery vehicle. Domino's teamed with Local Motors on a contest in which people from around the world were given the opportunity to help design the Ultimate Delivery Vehicle and earn some cash in the process. The design round of the competition just wrapped, and Local Motors announced the winning entry: a vehicle concept called the Domino's Pack, designed by Anej Kostrevc of Slovenia. With a compact overall footprint (almost nine feet long, just under five feet wide, and a little more than six feet tall), the Domino's Pack is designed to maximize interior space for pizzas and beverages. A cooled rear drawer chills up to nine two-liter bottles while other drawers and trays make it easy for the driver to store and access pizzas. The illustrations indicate that it uses automatic sliding side doors that operate in a manner similar to the 2013 Ford Escape's foot-activated liftgate system. This concept won Kostrevc $10,000, while second and third place won $5,000 and $1,500, respectively; designers of the remaining top 10 choices took home $500 each. This is just the first of five phases that will award more than $50,000 in total prize money. From here, vehicle details (packaging, interior, surfacing, and rendering) will be finalized using a similar voting and validation process. The contest wraps on February 19, 2013. Posted: 20 Oct 2012 03:59 PM PDT Motorsports: Brammo strong in TTXGP World Championship practice and qualifying [w/video] Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Podcasts, On Two Wheels, USA Daytona is a noisy place this weekend, with Biketoberfest happening concurrently with the Fall Cycle Scene. The streets echo with the potato-potato sounds of thousands of Harley Davidson cruisers, whilst inside the Daytona International Speedway, the air is filled with the screams of a few dozen assorted racing bikes. One end of the paddock at the race track is an island of aural calm, however. Here, the teams contesting the TTXGP World Championship are going through the process of practice and qualifying for Sunday's big race. While there is the typical spinning of wrenches and plotting of strategy, the revving of engines is replaced by the click-clacking of laptops. As expected, Team Icon Brammo is strong. Dominant even, with riders Eric Bostrom and Steve Atlas qualifying in the top two spots with fast laps of 1:58.648 and 1:59.397, respectively. Victory is not assured however, since both riders experienced worrying glitches while securing the lead positions. Sadly, their strongest American competitors, Barracuda Lightning, are a no-show after reportedly suffering logistical setbacks.Münch Racing will be 3rd on the grid, after pulling down a 2:04.897. They were comfortable enough with the TTE-2 race machine that they sat out the last pre-qualifying practice opportunity, despite making a few tweaks after a bit of early-morning track time.Catavolt will line up next, behind the Germans. Maybe. The Australian team had overcome a small leak in its hub motor's water cooling system that almost sent rider Jason Morris off the high side in early practice, allowing them to turn up the power to the controller of their torque monster. When it came time to put the bike to the test, though, the motor seemed to fail and it only just managed to make it around the track. As it was, their 2:33.732 qualifying time came from an earlier practice. When last we left the paddock, the boys were scrambling to resolve the issue. Jeremiah Johnson will bring up the rear on a modified Zero S after experiencing an issue with the controller in his Be-Ev.com bike. Though his lap was slower than the others at, 2:50.624, he is confident it will hold up to the duress that only Daytona, with its long straights and steeply banked turns, can dish out. Ian Robertson, BMW sales chief, tells Automotive News that Europe faces "a lot of bumps on the road" before a sales recovery takes place. The publication says that region's automotive industry expects 2012 to show the biggest annual sales drop in 19 years. BMW sold 14 percent more vehicles worldwide in September, with demand for the new 3-Series sedan in the US and China contributing big. BMW officials didn't indicate what models it would divert from Europe. How this will affect the sales race between BMW, Audi and Mercedes is unclear, especially since all three brands are feeling equal amounts of hurt. Una de las que ya ha realizado un adelanto es Chevrolet, mostrando la primera imagen oficial del futuro súper ventas bautizado con la denominación Onix. A la venta a partir del próximo mes de noviembre, el Onix podrá adquirirse los nuevos motores 1.0i y 1.4i con tecnología Flex. Además podrán contar con el sistema de entretenimiento Chevrolet MyLink y una caja de cambios automática con seis velocidades, siendo la primera de este tipo en su segmento. El Onix es un polivalente de corte económico y eso se nota en el diseño. Pese a ser moderno, se echan de menos algunos elementos decorativos que mejoren la sensación de producto acabado como puede ser la moldura negra en el pilar B o unos tapacubos más elaborados. En cualquier caso, si el precio es razonable estos pequeños detalles serán perdonables. De corte sencillo y económico, este cambio permite olvidarse del embrague y lo convierte en un urbano más apetecible, si bien es cierto su funcionamiento nada tiene que ver con las excelentes DSG. La transmisión ASG se puede asociar tanto con el motor de un litro de 60 CV como con el de 75 CV. It is not, however, particularly adept at composing intelligible press releases in English. (Seriously, even if you don't generally look through pressers, this one is worth your two minutes.) The subject in question this time is a Nissan GT-R with a distinct dragon motif. Created for a wealthy Chinese client, this Year of the Dragon Godzilla has impressive quilting in the shape of scales, a monstrous and complexly embroidered dragon on the headliner, a similar treatment inside the trunklid and red accents as far as the eye can see. The matte white finish you see is some kind of wrap, rather than paint, as Vilner makes it clear (in an unclear way) that this GT-R started out as a red one. We're told that performance via horsepower to the wheels has been increased, as well. A new exhaust is the only performance upgrade that is specifically called out. The gallery of mostly interior images is worth a look. Earlier this month, the company pulled the wraps off its long-awaited app for the iPhone and iPad. When combined with the optional WiFi BacPac for the Hero2, the application can link to multiple cameras to change settings on the fly, as well as preview video and photos without having to remove the camera from its case or mount. Even better, the software is free, though GoPro will ask you to pony up around $60 for the WiFi add on. While the app is only available for Apple devices at the moment, GoPro says an Android version is in the works. That's exciting and all, but not nearly as much as word that the new Hero3 has officially hit the market. The Hero3 Black Edition is a full 30 percent smaller than its predecessor, which means its also a quarter lighter. Designers made the gadget twice as powerful, though, building in 1440p video at 48 frames per second, 1080p at 60 fps, and 720p at 120 fps. Even more surprising, the camera can click off 12-megapixel photos at a staggering 30 shots per second. WiFi is now built in, and the Black Edition includes the handy WiFi remote. The founder and namesake of the California-based extended-range plug-in vehicle maker spoke to the Wall Street Journal about his drivetrain technology and how it could be expanded to other forms of transportation. Fisker, who was born in Denmark, specifically mentioned four-wheel-drive vehicles would be a good fit for extended-range plug-in technology. He then went one step further, saying boats could use a similar powertrain setup to use electric power inside harbors and switch to diesel fuel out in the open water. Yes, in case he's asking for our opinion, we would like to see a water-ready Fisker hybrid design. In the meantime, Fisker, who has helped raise $1.2 billion in equity for his company, called his company a "historic brand" for its sales of about 1,500 Fisker Karma vehicles globally since the model debuted late last year. Later this year, Fisker will start selling Karmas in Dubai and China. La tercera generación de Seat Toledo pasará a la historia por ser uno de los modelos más controvertidos de la historia de la marca -si es que se acuerdan de él como algo más que el Velsatis español-. Su diseño que mezclaba altura y formas de monovolumen con un portón trasero en dos volúmenes fue la única causa que acortó su tortuosa vida comercial. Prueba de ello es que el Altea XL, un Toledo con un portón tradicional, funcionó bastante mejor en ventas. Es más, aún sigue en el catálogo de Seat cuando hace ya tiempo que el anterior Toledo nos dijo adiós. Pero dejemos el pasado atrás y centrémonos en esta cuarta generación del Toledo. La gama Toledo se compone de cuatro motores gasolina (tres propulsores de 1.2 litros de 75, 85 y 105 CV y un 1.4 TFSI de 122 CV) y un turbodiésel 1.6 litros de 105 CV. En términos de precios, la gama debuta en 13.990 euros (1.2 75 CV) para culminar con el 1.4 TFSI de 22.150 euros. En esta ocasión probamos el 1.2 TSI de 105 CV con el acabado Style (desde 20.500 euros), aunque existe el acabado Reference disponible desde 18.600 euros. Por tamaño se situaría por encima del León y por debajo del Exeo, sin embargo su gama de precios y equipamiento, lo sitúan por debajo del León. Más que seguir con la saga de los Toledo (ese papel recayó en el Exeo), el Toledo de cuarta generación es claramente el sustituto del Córdoba; un modelo de gran éxito en España y que se echaba en falta en la gama Seat. ¿Por qué ponerle el nombre de Toledo, entonces? La verdadera razón la tendrán los chicos de marketing, pero sin duda permite recalcar una de las bazas de este nuevo modelo y que permitió a la primera generación ser todo un éxito en Europa. Se sabe desde hace tiempo que se dejarán de fabricar en su planta de Cassino, donde comparten instalaciones con el Giulietta. Parte de la capacidad productiva de estos modelos que ya no se aprovechará, se aplicará a un incremento productivo del modelo de Alfa Romeo, que recibirá en los próximos meses un restyling, una supuesta versión familiar, y comenzará su exportación a Estados Unidos. Hasta aquí, nada nuevo. Lo nuevo que te contamos ahora viene escrito por los señores de Il Messaggero, un diario italiano que asegura, citando fuentes internas de la compañía, que el fabricante italiano montará el próximo compacto de Chrysler Lancia, el conocido como 100 (primer modelo global de la alianza Lancia-Chrysler), en la misma fábrica de Cassino. Este nuevo compacto, basado en la misma plataforma evolucionada del Dart y Giulietta, llegará al mercado en los próximos 24 meses, y montarlo en Cassino facilitaría explotar la capacidad productiva desaprovechada por Fiat en Europa (donde la media de ocupación de sus plantas es del 50%), aprovechando la explosión del mercado Norteamericano, donde las factorías del grupo están trabajando al 100%, y no podrían hacer frente a la fabricación del citado 100.
