Official: Hyundai, Kia preview new three-door hatches for Paris Motor Show

The platform-sharing Kia cee'd and Hyundai i30 were both redesigned this year and introduced with five-door hatchback and station wagon variants. In Paris, we'll see sportier three-door models added to the mix: the 2014 Kia pro_cee'd and the 2014 Hyundai i30 three-door. Matching the model range of the previous generation of each car, the three-doors should nicely complement the five-door versions of the cee'd and the i30 (known as the Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra GT, respectively, in the U.S.). Despite their shared genetics, the cars are well distinguished from each other. We think the Kia is sharper-looking, with its signature "tiger nose" grille and wide, Scirocco-like rear end. Four different engine options, two gas and two diesel, are shared with the already-available five-doors. While the the new Kia model makes sense, the three-door i30 might faces instant competition on the same showroom floor in the Hyundai Veloster. The i30's advantages are powertrain diversity and more traditional styling compared to the Veloster. Petrol crisis thriller "Fumes" makes statement, looks for backers
Filed under: Green Culture, Transportation Alternatives, Oil Sands "The UK's fuel supply has run out and the country is coming apart at the seams... Jared must escape London to reach his wife and child. He siphons the petrol from his own car to prevent it from being stolen, but just as he is getting ready to leave, there is a knock at the door... It's an old friend of Jared's: a volatile character named Sy... and Sy needs a ride..." So says the trailer for the film "Fumes," which appears to be a tense, short thriller that's yet to be made and is looking for backers. It's set in near-future London, where an oil crisis has caused the country's petrol supply to run out. The story was Inspired by two crises: a UK petrol shortage in 2009 when pumps were running dry, and the fiery London riots of August 2011 following protests over the shooting death by police of a local man, Mark Duggan. The film will be asking serious questions about society, sustainability, and reliance on fossil fuel. Writer-director-producer Tom Werber, best known for his animated short, "Losers: Flush," is campaigning for financial support and working with up-and-coming young actor Aaron Taylor, known for his role in the film "Some Dogs Bite," who will play troubling friend Sy. The next hurdle is money. The "Fumes" team is working on raising £12,600 ($20,000) through crowd funding site Indigogo. The project has a deadline of mid-October to raise the funds, and so far the numbers have been small. The funding categories pay tribute the movie's theme, such as $5,000 for "The Oil Field," which means you get to be an executive producer in the credits or just $50 for "The Full Tank," where you get your own special DVD copy of the film and a thank you in the film credits. As of press time, $1,050 of the $20,000 had been claimed. "We have assembled a fantastically talented team behind this film. This is a low-budget production, and all of the money we are asking for will go towards equipment, locations and travel costs." said producer Stephen Smith. Once it's shot and edited, "Fumes" the plan is to enter the film in major short film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Sundance, and Toronto. Official: Toyota Tundra can (and will) pull a Space Shuttle
Filed under: Truck, Etc., Toyota The battle amongst full-size pickup trucks from Ford, Chevy and Ram is as close to a bloodsport as the auto industry has, but now it might be Toyota that gets the last laugh in the tonnage towing race. In what should prove to be the mother of all publicity stunts, a showroom-stock 2012 Toyota Tundra will tow the space shuttle Endeavour to its final resting place at the California Science Center. How exactly does a bone-stock, half-ton pickup tow almost 300,000 pounds, you ask? A quarter mile at a time using a specially designed rig. Endeavour will be towed 12 miles from Los Angeles International Airport to the museum on October 13, and the Tundra will hitch up to the shuttle for the last quarter mile of the trip. The towing rig was made specifically for this event, allowing the full-size Tundra to pull almost 30 times its regular towing capacity. Toyota says that the truck used to tow Endeavour will be a stock V8 Tundra with no enhancements or modifications. The Endeavour exhibit opens at the California Science Center on October 30, joining other airplanes and spacecraft including the capsule from the Gemini 11 mission. The Tundra that tows the shuttle will remain on display at the museum as well. Official: 2014 Dodge Charger Pursuit AWD better able to catch bad guys in the snow
Filed under: Sedan, Dodge, Police/Emergency With the Ford Crown Victoria out of the picture, automakers are in a fight for police car domination, and Dodge just upped the ante by adding an optional all-wheel drive system on the Charger Pursuit for 2014. Previously, the Charger Pursuit was only available with rear-wheel drive, but adding the AWD system gives it an advantage over the rear-drive-only Chevrolet Caprice PPV and makes the car more marketable in Northern police fleets against the Ford Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan which also offers AWD. Dodge's system differs from Ford's mainly by being rear-wheel biased, but Chrysler also says that it features an active transfer case and a front axle disconnect system. These allow the Charger Pursuit to have great traction in slick road conditions and deliver optimal fuel economy in regular driving. The new Charger AWD police car will only be available on the cars equipped with the V8 engine, and while Chrysler didn't announce fuel economy estimates, the regular Charger AWD gets 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. For top fuel economy, the Pentastar V6 is still available under the RWD Charger Pursuit's hood. Chrysler's announcement of the Charger Pursuit AWD came on the same day that Ford announced the addition of the more powerful and more fuel-efficient 3.7-liter V6 to the Police Interceptor Sedan. Scion, meanwhile, advertises the FR-S (Toyota 86) around the world with drift-happy regional launch videos and, in the UK, scenes of dystopian breakout. But in this corner of the world, before Scion went mature, we remember when it had hip, DJ-driven spots with editing as edgy as the image it was trying to promote. Which brings us to this 30-second spec ad, created by YouTube users Marcus Stokes and Marko Mandaric. Heavy on the bass and VFX, it pitches the FR-S in Scion's original style. And even though the FR-S is the easy offering to slot in, we suspect the vibe might do favors for the tC and, pushing things, even the iQ simply because it's so left-field. Siempre asociada a la tracción integral Quattro, el Allroad era y es una alternativa a los clásicos SUV. Partiendo de que la inmensa mayoría de los usuarios de un todoterreno no lo utilizan realmente en condiciones extremas, Audi propuso, por primera vez en 2000, una versión aventurera del A6 Avant que era capaz de seguir (e incluso superar) a muchos SUV. Su combinación de tracción Quattro y suspensión neumática regulable que le otorgaba una elevada altura libre lo convirtieron en éxito. Y es que ofrecía el lujo de un modelo premium combinado con una capacidad offroad sorprendente en condiciones extremas, pero sin el volumen de un verdadero todoterreno. A pesar de sus cualidades y relativo éxito, sólo se vendieron 140.000 unidades entre las dos primeras generaciones. Aún así, el Allroad es un modelo clave en la gama A6. Y la tercera generación de A6 no es ninguna excepción a la regla. El Allroad aporta un toque distintivo, claramente no es un A6 como los demás, y una enorme dosis de polivalencia. Aquí, nada de 4 cilindros, los motores disponibles en la gama A6 Allroad son todos V6, dejando claro su condición de coche premium. se compone de un motor gasolina (el V6 3.0 litros TFSI de 310 CV) y cuatro motorizaciones diésel. Zipcar will start carsharing Honda Fit EVs in San Francisco

Zipcar will station Fit EVs at City Hall as well as the InterContinental and Parc 55 hotels. The car-sharing company, which says the EV can be recharged from a 240-volt station in less than three hours, will rent out the car at a starting rate of $8 an hour. Zipcar will also hold demonstrations and free test drives next Monday and Tuesday at San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza. The company says it will add Fit EVs to its fleets in Los Angeles and Portland, OR, this fall. The Fit EV, whose first deliveries were in California in July, has been rated by the EPA to have a single-charge range of 82 miles, or nine miles more than the Nissan Leaf. Honda is leasing out a limited number of Fit EVs in the state for $389 a month. De ser una marca conocida históricamente por su coche urbano compacto, pequeño y eficiente, pasó a ser un objeto chic, divertido de conducir y estéticamente atractivo. Pero a BMW no le valía con eso. Quería ampliar las ventas y sacar el máximo partido posible al nombre británico. Así se ideo el Countryman. Conceptualmente y a nivel de mercado, el objetivo de BMW con él ha sido robar clientes del segmento C, del líder de ventas europeo, el Golf, con un crossover entre MINI y todoterreno, captando el interés de aquellos que preferían un coche "diferente" con el que poder adentrarse de cuando en cuando en algún camino forestal, con las ventajas de la tracción total, y el aura chic del nombre MINI. Claro que elevar el coche y hacerlo más grande complicaba las posibilidades de mantener la dinámica de conducción deportiva y divertida del MINI de tres puertas.
