No era una carrera para salir a ganar, sino para demostrar la forma y detectar posibles problemas endémicos dentro del paquete del Viper, que ahora comenzará su evolución progresiva para intentar convertirse en un referente en GTE. SRT se encargó de confirmar que esto se trataba de "un mero test a gran escala", por lo que no se podía esperar un resultado más importante. However, when EVO wanted to put the F12 in context for its review, the magazine didn't use the 599 GTB, it used the 661-hp 599 GTO as the comparator. The point was to see how well the newest in the line of Ferrari's front-engined V12s stood up against the highest and hardest-edged iteration of the last. We've read about the quickness of the F12's steering rack and its devotion to tail-happy action, and none of that has interrupted the hosannas for the overall package. The 599 GTO was quite a different car than its donor GT in temperament and performance, but how the F12 and 599 GTO compare, exactly where each might have it over the other, provides for a result in EVO's opinion that might surprise. Filed under: Government/Legal, Work, Earnings/Financials New York City is looking to add 2,000 more taxis to its streets, which should help transportation-challenged pedestrians hail a cab quicker. Or will it?NPR asked transport economist Charles Komanoff his opinion of the plan and his take isn't so positive. Sure, he says, 2,000 more cabs should make it easier to get a ride, but more cars means more traffic. And not just more traffic, but more constant traffic. While private cars eventually reach their destinations and park, taxis take up precious road space 24 hours a day. That slows down all traffic including buses, cars, other taxis, etc. Komanoff estimates the city's traffic would move at least 12-percent slower. You'll be able to catch a cab about 60 seconds faster, but take more time than before to reach your destination. His figures show the slowdown could cost the city about $500 million a year in lost time. Which kinda negates the one-time $1 billion the city expects to make from auctioning the 2,000 new cab licenses. But the plan to add more cabs is being held up by a lawsuit. Not by residents afraid of getting around town slower, but by the cabbies themselves. More cabs equals more competition. Well, we should have written "stand at attention." According to SaabsUnited, the deal for National Electric Vehicle Sweden to buy the remaining Saab assets didn't close on schedule. In fact, it's been delayed by "a month, perhaps more." NEVS also seems to have indicated that it's not going to be answering any more questions about the deal until it's completed. NEVS is supposedly planning on building electric cars based on the design that would have been the next-generation 9-3. Posted: 05 Aug 2012 01:45 PM PDT Motorsports: Viper GTS-R makes competitive debut at Mid-Ohio Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance Saturday saw the Viper makes its much-anticipated return to competitive motorsports when SRT Motorsport's Team Viper successfully campaigned its pair of Viper GTS-R cars in the sixth round of the American Le Mans Series at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. What did success look like? Far from a podium finish, Team Viper was pleased just to have both cars finish the race, and was pleasantly surprised to have one crack the top ten. The two cars fielded were the No. 91 Forza Motorsports Viper GTS-R (blue/silver) driven by Kuno Wittmer and Dominik Farnbacher and the No. 93 Pennzoil Ultra car (yellow/silver) driven by Marc Gooseens and Tommy Kendall.We were at the race and watched both Vipers make their debut. While not nearly quick enough yet to threaten the Corvettes, Porsches, BMWs and Ferraris that contend fiercely for the GT Class crown, the Vipers were nonetheless very consistent and Team Viper reports the cars actually got quicker as the race progressed. While the No. 91 car made it through Mid-Ohio's 15-turn, 2.4-mile course all day without incident, and in fact spent most of its time running down the black-and-gold liveried Lotus Evora of Alex Job Racing, the No. 93 had two incidents, including an off-track excursion in the final minutes of the race. The GT Class was won on Saturday in a thrilling finish by Corvette Racing's Oliver Gavin, who held off the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in his No. 4 Corvette C6 ZR1 for the race's final 20 minutes. With the addition of the Viper this year (and the Lotus Evora), the GT Class of ALMS racing has become one of our favorite series to watch, especially in person where the personalities of these cars can be felt thundering in your ears. The Viper's 8.4-liter V10 engine makes a very distinct sound on the track. While not as gutteral as the Corvette's 5.5-liter V8, it's also not as loud as the BMW M3's 4.0-liter V8 nor as shrieky as the Ferrari 458 Italia's 4.5-liter V8 either. It falls somewhere in between the the Corvette and BMW, and could stand to have its volume cranked up a notch. And though the Viper's new design looked the part of a menacing GT car on the track, we hope at some point the cars will be wearing liveries that harken back to the red-and-white-striped Oreca Vipers that dominated early ALMS racing. We'll get the true story on that at next year's Geneva Motor Show, which is when Autocar says it's due to be revealed, but what's less in question is this: with a 6.6-liter, 600-horsepower V12 and a tauter ride it will be the fastest Rolls-Royce ever. Weight is estimated to drop by 200 kg compared to its sedan sibling, and its roofline to drop by up to nearly three inches. If the horsepower numbers are correct the shorter and lighter Ghost coupe, with a 69-hp bump over the sedan, will assuredly deliver the "considerably brisker" acceleration promised. Helping matters will be the lowered chassis, larger tires, "mildly sports-orientated" brakes and a suspension tuned to be more aggressive but delivering just as much waftability. Este súper deportivo quedará situado por encima del "R" y casi con seguridad será presentado oficialmente en el Salón del Automóvil de París el próximo mes de octubre. Lo más impactante, junto a su estética, serán sus prestaciones. Equipado con un nuevo motor V12 de 5,5 litros y doble turbo, desarrolla una potencia de nada menos que 888 CV frente a los 700 CV del bloque original. Se combinará con una caja de cambios muy rápida, aunque no informan de qué tipo. De momento no se han detallado las prestaciones, pero se sabe que podrá pasar de 0 a 100 km/h en sólo 3,6 segundos y alcanzar los 344 km/h de velocidad máxima. La producción en serie comenzará a finales de este mismo año y el precio rondará los 420.000 €, una tarifa competitiva teniendo en cuenta la potencia de su motor. Se decía que ahora la marca de General Motors se replantearía su estrategia de marketing para Europa, y ahora conocemos cuál va a ser: Va a invertir 460 millones de euros en un contrato hasta 2021 para patrocinar al Manchester United, apareciendo en las camisetas de los jugadores y en toda la ropa y complementos asociados. Filed under: Motorsports, Safety There is a debate within the world of IndyCar as to whether a new and safer type of fencing should be installed at tracks - something less likely to injure a driver gone airborne than the catch fences and support posts used today. We characterize it as a "debate" but judging by the story in Autoweek, no one is against more safety - not drivers, not track owners, not IndyCar execs - but more importantly, no one knows who's going to kick in the $100 million dollars to get a project going. You read that correctly: one of the doctors who worked on the SAFER barrier system estimates "it will cost $100 million to research, develop and install" either a hard barrier or an energy absorbing curtain around the necessary ovals. True, those are but two options, but in light of the physical realities and forces involved there aren't a whole lot of ways to go, and none of them might be any cheaper. On the other hand, Eddie Gossage, who owns the Texas oval, said the financials don't support him spending up to $20 million - it would make more sense just to give up the race - and he believes it should be IndyCar that pays. Gossage said that in 33 years no one ever expressed concern to him over the fencing before Dan Wheldon's death last year. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be a concern now, but racing is dangerous and everyone knows it, and everyone also knows racing is a business and the bottom line is ultimately incompatible with the pricelessness of human life. The canopied, tandem-seat oddity represented a bold choice in supercardom, a far brasher choice than something from Maranello or Sant'Agata Bolognese, say. The carbon fiber missile debuted back in 2009 and was powered by a V12 sourced from Mercedes-Benz. Available in various tunes, the powertrain was good for up to 760 horsepower - no small sum given that the larger-than-you-think coupe still weighed less than 2,800 pounds. But now there's a new choice in the a.d. Tramontana stable, dubbed XTR. While no pictures have been released, the Spanish builder has released this set of renderings, along with word that its latest creation will be powered by a new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12 that will bludgeon its way down the road with 888 horsepower and 678 pound-feet of torque at its disposal. There's also word of a new "ultra-rapid competition gearbox," but no official details have yet been provided on what, exactly it might be. The mid-engined, rear-drive XTR also looks to have a significantly reworked appearance, including new aero bits, lights, wheels, and so on, but the core airplane fuselage-like construction and cycle fenders remain. Pricing? Glad you asked. Available later this year, the XTR is expected to command 420,000 euros - around $514,000. Only about a dozen examples are expected to be built per year, but a.d.
