Official: Smart and BRABUS celebrate 10 years together with special edition model

Worldwide, more than 50,000 customized cars have been built by the team. To celebrate, the two are producing just 100 specially-equipped cars. The 10th Anniversary model starts with a smart fortwo BRABUS with the 102hp turbocharged engine. The car is then slathered in liquid silver paint and given titanium-look headlamp surrounds and red BRABUS logos. Inside, passengers get heated, hand-stitched, black leather seats with 10th Anniversary logos, red trim bits and a dash badge noting the car's serial number. The car's start button is integrated into the shifter. Uno de ellos es Big Daddy Customs, con sede en la India y que acaba de convertir el discreto TATA Safari Storme en un Land Rover Evoque, o al menos, lo ha intentado. Estéticamente los cambios más importantes están en el frontal, con ópticas, parrilla y paragolpes muy similares a los del modelo británico (tiene incluso luces diurnas por LEDs). La vista lateral sin embargo tiene poco arreglo y deja notar que no estas ante el bonito Evoque (no lo arregla ni la pintura bitono). En la zaga sólo las ópticas y el portón han sido modificados, si bien se nota a lo lejos tampoco tiene nada que ver con el Range Rover. En el interior todo sigue como siempre, aunque hay un tapizado en piel de superior calidad y pequeños detalles que intentan disimular las carencias del original. No sé qué te parecerá esta preparación. Desde luego luce mejor que el normal aunque denominarlo Moon Rover ya parece excesivo. Official: Ford C-Max Energi will have 20-mile electric range, get 95 MPGe [w/video]
Ford's marketing strategy for its plug-in vehicles is coming into Focus (pun intended): compare, compare, compare. When announcing the Focus Electric's 105 miles per gallon equivalent, for example, Ford made sure to note that it beats the "Nissan Leaf by 6 MPGe while also offering more motor power, passenger room and standard features. Customers can make more use of this efficiency with Ford's faster charging technology that can recharge Focus Electric in about half the time of Nissan Leaf." With the C-Max Hybrid, Ford said it would get better mileage than the Toyota Prius V. Today, Ford is revealing more details about the C-Max Energi Plug-In Hybrid, and the press release says it offers "nearly double electric-only range of Prius." What does that mean, aside from some numerical chest puffery? Ford says the electric range of the Energi PHEV will be "more than 20 miles" and that the car's full-tank-of-gas-plus-electricity range is 550 miles. On top of that, the C-Max Energi is expected to get 95 MPGe (Ford expects its Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid to get 100 MPGe). It may not be saying much, but Ford also says that the Energi has a "maximum electric-only speed projected to top that of Prius plug-in." The C-Max Hybrid will be available this fall with a base price of $25,995, including destination and delivery. Oh, by the way, Ford would like you to know that that price is "$1,300 lower than Toyota Prius V." Honda delivers first Fit EV in California
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, HondaHonda has made good on its promise to deliver its first Fit EV, and that delivery took place in California on Friday. Matt and Becky Walton, of Ventura County, can now claim they have the first example of Honda's all-electric car, which costs $389 a month. The Waltons got the first Fit EV because they were the first ones to sign up for a lease at the car's website. They've owned at least four other Honda's, the automaker says, going back to the 1970s. In a statement, Matt said, "It's truly an honor to take delivery of the first Honda Fit EV and participate in the advancement of all-electric vehicles in the real world," but he didn't mention the fact that Honda's "real-world" EV push is, in this case at least, available for a limited time only, and in limited areas. Leases start in California and Oregon now and will expand to the East Coast early next year. The EPA rated the Fit EV at 118 MPGe and gives it an official range of 82 miles. The car's highly efficient energy consumption is 29 kWh per 100 miles. Official: Nissan will start building Rogue in Korea to meet U.S. demand
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Crossover, Nissan, South KoreaNissan already announced that production of the next-generation Rogue crossover will shift to its Smyrna, Tennessee facility, but apparently, that won't be enough. In a new statement, the Renault-Nissan Alliance confirms that Rogue models will also be built at the Renault Samsung facility in Busan, South Korea. The current Rogue, pictured above, is built in Japan. The next-generation Rogue is set to launch sometime in the next year as part of Nissan's new-product onslaught. The Renault-Nissan Alliance plans to invest $160 million in its Busan facility to accommodate production of the new Rogue. According to the company, Busan will produce around 80,000 Rogues annually - that's in addition to the estimated 100,000 to 120,000 Rogues that will come out of Tennessee. Rogue production in Korea is scheduled to start in 2014, while Smyrna starts building the new crossover next year. Si en Europa los Polo y Golf son los modelos que se llevan la mayor parte de las ventas y se han convertido en auténticos best-sellers, en Brasil este papel se lo lleva el Gol y, en menor medida, también el Voyage. Basta decir que en los seis primeros meses del 2012 se han vendido 126.557 unidades del hatchback y 42.788 del sedán. A estos números habría que sumar los excelentes datos que obtienen también en Argentina y, algo más discretos, también en Chile, México y Colombia. Para tratar de llegar a una mayor parte de la población Volkswagen ha realizado un rediseño que toma inspiración en los últimos productos de la firma presentados en Europa. Reps. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., and Betty McCollum, D-Minn., sought to cut over $72 million from the defense budget in 2013, which would have ended sponsorship deals the military holds with NASCAR, IndyCar and National Hot Rod Association drag racing. The cuts would also have affected Ultimate Fighting Championship and bass fishing sponsorships. Perhaps it's not surprising that major opposition to the plan came from representatives of North Carolina, Florida and Mississippi, hotbeds of NASCAR activity. In addition, a joint letter opposing the move was submitted by NASCAR, the IZOD IndyCar series, Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association. Report: Kyushu on the road to becoming Japan's Motor City
Filed under: Japan, Plants/Manufacturing, Nissan, Toyota, South Korea The strong yen has Japanese carmakers looking to optimize every efficiency in order to keep their cars competitive in export markets. One strategy gaining momentum is to do some island hopping, specifically, moving plants and manufacturing to Kyushu, the southernmost island in the Japanese archipelago. Car production there as a percentage of total Japanese production has doubled from 2001 to 2011, but more startling are the recent increases: Nissan just moved its Note and Caravan production there, Toyota is boosting production there by 600 percent, and total units made in Kyushu climbed 21 percent from 2010 to 2011. The three big factors involved are lower personnel costs, lower auto parts costs and increased productivity because of newer, more efficient factories. Companies can save ten percent on personnel in Kyushu versus traditional manufacturing centers like Aichi and Kanagawa, which are on the main island of Honshu and near major cities like Nagoya and Tokyo. Kyushu is also much closer to the South Korean peninsula, and the weakness of the South Korean won means importing lower-priced Korean auto parts is an even more attractive option. Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun says it could soon be the Detroit of Japan. The prediction could be sped up if intergovernment talks can rework laws on transportation: it's illegal for trucks with South Korean plates to drive on Japanese roads, so trucks hauling parts get shipped to Kyushu ports and their cargo is transferred to Japanese trucks.
