Tesla owner gives top 10 11 reasons why he loves his Model S
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Tesla Motors, VideosKonstantin Othmer loves his Tesla Model S. The serial entrepreneur was one of the lucky few who took delivery last Friday at the car's official launch and as such, he is one of just a handful of people who have had more then a mere ten minutes behind the wheel. He has spent that time well. Besides giving rides to friends and family, he's also taken the opportunity to share with the world at large what it is, exactly, that he likes about his new all-electric ride in an entertaining video. We won't give it all away, but will say that he does touch on a couple of our favorite themes. No gas needed, along with lots of performance. Enough performance, in fact, that his camera person (understandably) let's out an expletive or two during some acceleration demonstrations. Luckily for those at work or sensitive to such coarse outbursts, he's just put up a family-friendly version. We've seen initial media impressions of the Model S, as well as those from reservation holders. Now, scroll below and see what an owner makes of America's first electric performance sedan.Continue reading Tesla owner gives top 10 11 reasons why he loves his Model STesla owner gives top 10 11 reasons why he loves his Model S originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 19:48:00 EST. Video: Ford shows off Mustang Shelby GT500's new launch control
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Technology, Videos, Ford Listen to the sage words of the late Carroll Shelby: "650 horsepower? Nobody else has it." We're guessing this footage was recorded a little while back, before the final certified rating of the 5.8-liter supercharged engine in the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 came in at 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. Indeed, there isn't a single car anywhere near the sticker price of the 2013 GT500 - not even the stupid-fast Chevy Corvette ZR1 - that offers as many horses under the hood as the most powerful production Mustang in history. Suffice it to say, reeling in 662 galloping ponies and sending them to the rear tires isn't an easy conundrum to solve. And that's where launch control comes into play. It's a cool system, allowing the driver to alter the RPM held by the engine with the clutch depressed. Drop the clutch and, instead of watching your Goodyear F1 Supercar tires go the way of the Dodo, you hook up and take off down the drag strip. Or, ya know, you could turn the system off and smoke bomb your neighborhood. See examples of both launch techniques in the video below, because whenever a video starts off with a prominent disclaimer, you know it's going to be good.Continue reading Ford shows off Mustang Shelby GT500's new launch controlFord shows off Mustang Shelby GT500's new launch control originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 19:45:00 EST. Report: New Accord will feature Honda's answer to Ford's SYNC
Filed under: Technology, Honda, InfotainmentHonda desperately needs to hit a home run with its all-new 2013 Accord, a car that's perennially on the best-seller list in the United States. The current Accord, which is in its eighth generation, debuted in 2008 before most of the latest and greatest technological advances began filtering their way into the interiors of mainstream cars and trucks. As such, Honda's family sedan offering is a ways behind in the infotainment and navigation categories. For 2013, Honda will launch HondaLink, its next-generation infotainment package, in the Accord. Though the technology will see a much smaller debut in the Fit EV (as seen above), that rollout won't hit the masses the way it undoubtedly will in the Accord. According to Wired, it's not yet clear if Honda will rely on satellite data or if the automaker will incorporate a cellular modem into the package, but either way, Honda's Aha Radio service will make its first appearance in the 2013 Accord. There's also a possibility that the Accord could be the first machine to use Siri integration from Apple, though that's nothing more than speculation at this point. We certainly look forward to see what Honda has cooked up for its bread-winning model. After all, as shown most notably by Ford, having the most built-in technology, especially in its first generation, isn't always a slam-dunk with mainstream consumers.New Accord will feature Honda's answer to Ford's SYNC originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 19:01:00 EST. Official: China's SAIC sets up shop in suburban Detroit
Filed under: China, GMShanghai Automotive Industry Corporation has opened a new North American headquarters in Birmingham, Michigan. The Chinese automaker says the facility will help build a stronger connection and further cooperation between U.S. manufacturers and their Chinese counterparts. SAIC refurbished a 30,000-square-foot building for its new HQ, which should employ around 100 people. Specifically, the location will help SAIC purchase the parts it needs from the strong base of local suppliers in the area while also coordinating import and export operations. The Chinese automaker says the facility will also house some technology and engineering research development, as well. SAIC said the company chose Birmingham for the city's proximity to partners like General Motors as well as numerous parts suppliers. Michigan's pro-business environment didn't hurt the decision either. SAIC is the largest automaker on the Chinese stock market. Take a look at the full press release below for more information.Continue reading China's SAIC sets up shop in suburban DetroitChina's SAIC sets up shop in suburban Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 18:16:00 EST. Rumor: Mercedes congela el SLC; el precio final se le estaba yendo de las manos
Filed under: Mercedes-Benz, Cupés, Deportivos He aquí una noticia extraña. Y sorprendente. Dan Neil eats crow, donates $1,000 to charity on behalf of Tesla CEO Elon Musk
Filed under: Etc., EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Tesla MotorsDan Neil, he of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism fame, has made a decent living peddling his automotive snark, and for good reason, as Neil is unquestionably one of the best and funniest at what we do. Tesla CEO Elon Musk - also an outspoken salesman of some merit - differs from Neil in one primary respect, which is that Musk is worth some $2 billion and thus doesn't have to drive someone else's cars around. When these two agreed to resolve their disagreement over Tesla's seemingly pie-in-the-sky production plans by means of a wager, those of us familiar with both affable egos were deeply amused. Neil most certainly did not expect to lose his end of the bet: That Tesla would fail in its promise to deliver its second model on time. What with the prevailing view at the time being that Tesla's game plan was merely to get bought out by some larger entity and that the Model S was just vaporware, a means to that end, we probably would have gone with Neil had someone forced us to take sides. Of course, we can all learn a lesson here, which is that you don't bet against the guy who owns the casino. Musk and Tesla clearly kept up their end of the bargain, so Neil's public mea culpa ran in Friday's Wall Street Journal. He states that he's made his $1,000 contribution to Doctors Without Borders, the penalty for the loss being far less than Musk's promised $1 million debit. Neil's pride is likely hurting more from the comeuppance than the cash outlay dented his savings account, but as he writes, "I lost, and happily so. As a proponent of electric mobility, I have said many times that I wanted to lose the bet... As a critic, I'll reserve judgment on the Model S until I get a chance to drive it."Dan Neil eats crow, donates $1,000 to charity on behalf of Tesla CEO Elon Musk originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 17:40:00 EST. Video: Houston woman warns motorists of speed trap with sign, gets thrown in jail
Filed under: Government/Legal, Videos This story is irritating on so many levels. It involves a dreaded police speed trap, a good samaritan warning motorists of the potential fine and a 12-hour stint in a Texas jail cell. Houston-area resident Natalie Plummer, who was riding her bike on the way home from the grocery store, noticed that cops were pulling over speeders with what looked like a speed trap, so she decided to turn her bag into a make-shift warning sign. That sort of action seems to be covered by the Constitution, but Plummer was still arrested for allegedly standing in the street when there was a sidewalk present. For the record, Plummer tells KRTK that she never left the sidewalk, and she claims that the arresting offer threatened her with an arrest for obstructing justice, which is a felony offense.Scroll down to watch the ABC News report. We can see the cops being irritated with Ms. Plummer's sign-holding activity, but a 12-hour jail term seems more than a little excessive. Heck, even a fine of $1 seems a bit heavy handed, but then many feel the same way about speed traps.Continue reading Houston woman warns motorists of speed trap with sign, gets thrown in jailHouston woman warns motorists of speed trap with sign, gets thrown in jail originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 17:29:00 EST.

Opinion: What's the right way to read an automotive quality report?
Filed under: Etc.Why No One Quality Report Tells The Whole Story Quality remains one of the most significant factors for folks buying a new car. There's no question that fuel economy has become a critical consideration for most folks looking to buy a new car. But quality remains one of the single most significant factors in closing the deal. Once upon a time, word of mouth was the only way to differentiate between one brand and another, an important yet oftentimes unreliable approach. Then, back in the 1970s, a one-time Ford analyst by the name of J. David Power revolutionized the industry with his first quantitative studies of vehicle quality and reliability. Today, J.D. Power and Associates is the quality field heavyweight, with all sorts of wannabes chasing for a piece of its multi-million-dollar consulting business. Earlier this month, Power released its 26th annual Initial Quality Study, perhaps the single-most widely quoted survey of its kind, which tallies up the results of a lengthy questionnaire filled out by tens of thousands of recent vehicle buyers. To understand the significance of the IQS, consider that Ford held a separate news conference a day earlier to address the likelihood of its downward slide in the survey. Makers who did well blitzed the media with news releases trumpeting their performance. Paul A. Eisenstein is Publisher of TheDetroitBureau.com and a 30-year veteran of the automotive beat. His editorials bring his unique perspective and deep understanding of the auto world to Autoblog readers on a regular basis. Ford C-Max Hybrid will get 47 mpg, better than Toyota Prius V
Filed under: Hybrid, MPG, Ford, North America, USA It won't only start out cheaper than the Toyota Prius V, it will also be more fuel efficient. Ford is claiming its C-Max Hybrid, which goes on sale later this year, will get 47 miles per gallon. The family-size member of the Prius family? It is rated by the EPA to get 44 mpg city, 40 highway and 42 combined, and Ford says the C-Max Hybrid will get "at least" three miles per gallon better than that. In all, Ford will have eight models that will get at least 40 mpg highway for 2013, which the automaker says will be more than any other automaker. Six of its models will either be hybrids or plug-ins. Ford's made no secret that it's targeting the Prius V with the gas-electric C-Max, trying to position the model as a more fuel-efficient, less expensive alternative. The C-Max Hybrid's $25,995 base price for the C-Max Hybrid is $500 less than the base Prius V. Ford started taking orders for the 2013 model-year C-Max Hybrid last month. Ford is looking for the C-Max Hybrid to spur hybrid sales that so far this year have lagged behind last year's numbers. Through May, Ford sold 7,521 hybrids in the U.S., down 44 percent from 2011. Ford Escape Hybrid sales were down 76 percent from the year before.Continue reading Ford C-Max Hybrid will get 47 mpg, better than Toyota Prius VFord C-Max Hybrid will get 47 mpg, better than Toyota Prius V originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 15:55:00 EST. Official: Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake gets official
Filed under: Performance, Wagon, Hatchback, Mercedes-Benz, Diesel, Luxury We've been anxiously waiting for the wraps to officially come off the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, and by golly, the wait is finally over. Our excitement, though, is tempered by Mercedes-Benz Manager of Product & Technology Public Relations Christian Bokich, who tells us, "Currently, there are no plans to bring the CLS Shooting Brake to the United States." To which we reply, "Boo!" While we may take a bit of issue with Mercedes-Benz's assertion that "The proportions of the CLS Shooting Brake are surprising but clearly those of a coupé... but with five doors and a roof which continues through to the rear," we're still pretty keen on the exterior look. "In essence it represents an unprecedented version of a sports car with five seats and a large tailgate," adds M-B, and that much we can mostly agree with. In reality, this is a low-slung station wagon, similar in execution to the Cadillac CTS Wagon, and it looks great. Based on our observations about the CLS four-door coupe sedan that the Shooting Brake is based on, we expect it to be a great car to drive, as well. Europeans will get two gasoline engines - a 3.5-liter V6 making 306 horsepower in the CLS350 and a 408-hp twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 in the CLS500 - as well as two diesels - a 2.1-liter four cylinder in the CLS250 CDI and a 3.0-liter V6 in the CLS350 CDI. All but the four-cylinder are available with either rear- or 4Matic all-wheel drive, the smallest engine making use of the rear wheels only. Acceleration comes in at 7.8 seconds to 62 miles per hour for the CLS250 CDI, 6.7 seconds for the CLS350 and 5.3 for the CLS500. Top speed is limited to 155 mph. Emphasizing the increased utility over its four-door sibling, Mercedes has fitted the CLS Shooting Brake with optional aluminum loading rails and a wooden load compartment floor. Up to 1,550 liters (54.7 cubic feet) are available behind the standard power liftgate, and an automatically adjustable air suspension ensures proper ride and handling even with a load in place. There's even an optional towing kit. We suggest you peruse the press release below for all the details, as well as a handy explanation of how the Shooting Brake got its name.Continue reading Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake gets officialMercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake gets official originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 15:20:00 EST. Video: Jaguar lets its F-Type roar
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Videos, Jaguar, Luxury The run-up to an honest introduction to the Jaguar F-Type continues with this: footage of the 380-horsepower, supercharged convertible on the automaker's test track. Martin Brundle hosts the 'spot' and gets a ride-along with Mike Cross, chief engineer for Jaguar, but naturally, we don't get any more hard information than we already have on the car. What we do get, though, is sound. No matter how the F-Type looks - and it looks good on the run here, even in camo - with that exhaust it won't be creeping up on anyone. Those of you attending the Goodwood Festival of Speed, this is your appetizer to the F-Type's run up the hill. Mercedes B-Class E-Cell will get Tesla powertrain
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Mercedes Benz, Tesla Motors, Daimler Unveiled at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class E-Cell Plus was meant to be a preview of the German automaker's first range-extended electric vehicle. Along with a battery pack to power it for 100 kilometers (62 miles), it was also to feature a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline-burning engine to give it an additional 400 kilometers (248.5 miles). Indeed, a production version was to be shown this past April at the New York Auto Show. Well, scratch all that. Maybe. If a report over at Automobilwoche is correct, the E-Cell Plus is losing the dino-juice burner and going all-electric. Not only that, they say that the entire powertrain will be supplied by the Tesla Motors. The reason for pulling the plug on the engine? According to an unnamed spokesperson, zero-emissions vehicles get better ratings and higher incentives than vehicles with a range extender. As the B-Class E-Cell is supposed to be sold in the U.S., this is an important point.News of a deal with Daimler to supply an entire powertrain for an upcoming vehicle came to light last November, but there have been rumors it might be for an A-Class. One thing we do know: Tesla expects this program to be much larger than its previous Smart ED arrangement or it supply agreement for the Toyota Rav4 EV. While we wait for an official announcement from Daimler to clear up the situation, let us know in the comments if you'd prefer a Mercedes E-Cell or a Tesla Model S with similar range.Mercedes B-Class E-Cell will get Tesla powertrain originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 13:53:00 EST.
