| Posted: 05 May 2012 12:58 AM PDT  Guerra de enchufes Filed under: Híbridos, verdes y alternativos Como con el VHS y el Betamax, o el BlueRay y el DVD HD, se veía venir la guerra que tenemos entre manos, y sea cual sea el resultado, no pinta bien para el consumidor final. Y es que hace tiempo, desde que existen los coches eléctricos en el mercado, que clamábamos por un enchufe común para todos los fabricantes, ya que desde el punto de vista de infraestructura esto es necesario para evitar problemas mayores tan pronto como la gente empiece a consumir en masa este tipo de vehículos. Y lo peor que podía pasar ha acabado ocurriendo. Hace ya meses que se anunció una alianza entre Ford, GM, Chrysler, VAG, BMW, Daimler y Porsche para crear un estándar común para enchufes de recarga, y ayer confirmaron que ya tienen su diseño, que mezcla en un solo enchufe las funciones de carga rápida y carga "normal". Las cargas rápidas bajo este dispositivo podrían realizarse en tiempos récord de 15 minutos, depende obviamente del tamaño de la batería del coche. Si bien hablar de este grupo de fabricantes es hablar de un alto porcentaje de coches vendidos de manera global, estas marcas están fallando en un aspecto. At least, those that haven't been smashed into great green globs of greasy, grimy cane toad guts. Let's set the scene: A pair of Australian cane toads - the species, native to Central and South America, was imported into Australia in an unsuccessful attempt to control Beetle populations - are having a nighttime chat on a random road somewhere in Oz. The subject matter ranges from the tastiness and arousing properties of the toads' own back secretions to the velocity with which a four-cylinder car can travel. In this case, the car is powered by one of Ford's turbocharged EcoBoost engines. And then... disaster strikes. It's certainly an odd advertisement, but at least it's unique. | Posted: 04 May 2012 05:29 PM PDT  These electric vehicles aren't really, real; just California compliance EVs Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy, North America, USA California may be the Golden State, but when it comes to the upcoming debuts of a number of battery-electric vehicles, prospective buyers may want to associate the most populous U.S. state with the color red. As in herring. That's the conclusion of Green Car Reports in its evaluation of a number of EVs set to launch within the next year or two. With automakers like Toyota, General Motors and Ford obligated to meet certain zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV) quotas for California, those companies are making EV versions of the RAV4, Chevrolet Spark, Focus (respectively) almost purely for the purpose of meeting the quotas - not for any widespread U.S. sales. Honda and Chrysler are also making what GCR termed "compliance cars" with the Fit and the Fiat 500 Elettrica. All of those models are strictly for show, the publication says, because they're either going to be lease-only models, won't be available much outside of the "California emissions" states, will be produced in extremely low volumes or have so few details released about them from the automakers that a true national roll-out is unlikely. Of course, if a bunch of other states follow California's emissions rules lead, this all could change. Earlier this year, we learned that as many as 10 other states may adopt zero-emissions vehicles quotas similar to California's. Also, California recently finalized a requirement for more than 15 percent of the new cars to be ZEVs by the 2025 model year, which would mean that about 270,000 ZEVs would have to be sold in California each year. (Morbidly obese people lose 10 years, according to one study.) And then there's that long list of potential health problems obese people face in America ranging from asthma and diabetes to heart disease and cancer - as well as scorn and ridicule from skinny judgmental people. So it only makes sense that obese people are statistically less likely to survive a severe automobile accident. A study of fatal accidents by the University of Buffalo suggests that the bigger you are, the more likely you'll die from injuries sustained in an accident. In a severe accident, moderately obese people face a 21 percent greater risk of death and morbidly obese people are 56 percent more likely to die than those of lesser weight. "The severity and patterns of crash injuries depend on a complex interaction of biomechanical factors, including deceleration velocity at impact, seat belt and air bag use, vehicle type and weight, and type of impact," says Dr. Dietrick Jehle, professor of emergency medicine at University of Buffalo School of Medicine. With nearly one-third of the American population now considered obese, Jehle suggests carmakers begin testing safety equipment with big boned dummies and devise other means to help obese people better survive accidents. "The rate of obesity is continuing to rise, so it is imperative that car designs are modified to protect the obese population, and that crash tests are done using a full range of dummy sizes," Jehle states. So no one was surprised to see analysts' low expectations for German carmakers. But the numbers are out, and whaddya know? Three German auto companies have reported better results than predicted.BMW reported this week that its first quarter profit rose 19 percent. BMW said 1-Series sales jumped 20 percent, which helped the company deliver a record total of 425,528 vehicles in the first quarter. Last week, Daimler and Volkswagen blew past analysts' expectations with VW increasing profit 10 percent and Daimler making 4.9 percent more that last year's first quarter. Much of the profit and sales boost is due to growing popularity of German models in U.S. and China. A couple of analysts quoted in a Bloomberg report are split on what the future holds. One says he expects BMW and VW to raise their second quarter forecasts. Another sees China's market cooling off and gives BMW a neutral rating while rating VW and Daimler as good buys. BMW is recalling a total of 24,340 vehicles from the 2009-2011 model years - roughly 2,740 2011 or 2012 X5 xDrive 50i and X6 xDrive 50i vehicles as well as 21,600 3-series diesels - because some parts of the emissions system (the DEF mixer, EGR valve and SCR catalyst) can incorrectly calculate the vehicle mileage. This can cause too many emissions to come out of the tailpipe, according to the California emission control rules. The recall will start May 9. Drivers should be on the lookout for letters after that date, a spokesman told Automotive News. That's 10 model years ago, predating our own existence as a website. Even the XC90 mid-cycle refresh that happened in 2007 seems like an eternity ago. So it stands to reason that for 2013 Volvo would introduce... yet another year of the same old thing. Well, not exactly. The 2013 XC90 has been "delightfully refreshed," though we're pretty sure that the color-coordinated exterior and LED daytime running lights were actually introduced last year. But hey, don't fix it if it ain't broke. Volvo has also rejiggered the trim packages on the XC90, which now starts at $39,500 plus $895 delivery. And that Yamaha-built V8 that disappeared this year? Fans of the brand chose a GReddy twin turbo kit, which should crank up the 3.7-liter V6 to the tune of around 500 horsepower. The Stage One clip follows the build as technicians dismantle the front of the sports car, yank the engine and bolt on the aftermarket goods. Fans also chose a GReddy Ti-C catback exhaust to help the engine breathe a little easier while hustling down the track, so the pipes go on next. Filed under: Crossover, AudiAudi is rapidly expanding its crossover range, with the Q3 recently joining the Q5 and Q7, not to mention the BMW X6-rivaling Q6 that's in the pipeline. But now, according to Auto Express, Audi is working on an entry-level Q2 crossover that would take on the likes of the Nissan Juke and Mini Countryman.Auto Express has come up with a rendering of the Q2 (pictured right, click to see the full deal), which we'll reportedly see in concept form sometime in the next 12 months, and - surprise, surprise - it looks like a sportier Q3 or, more to the point, a high-riding A1. Because of its small size, powertrains will likely be plucked out of the A1 range, meaning a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four and a 1.6-liter diesel four will be offered. Audi will also reportedly take a cue from Mini with the Q2 launch, encouraging owners to personalize their small CUVs in a number of ways. According to the report, buyers will be able to opt for contrasting roof and mirror colors, as well as different-colored major interior trim bits, including the seats and steering wheel. The Q2 will ride on the same MQB architecture that is set to underpin the full range of Volkswagen Group small cars. Hasta ahora llegaban importados desde Argentina pero Volkswagen ha decidido que esta planta sólo surta a otros mercados de la región. A finales de junio está previsto que la fábrica de Hanover comience el ensamblaje de este pick up y es más que probable que durante los primeros días del mes siguiente ya estén en los concesionarios europeos. Poco después también se podrán adquirir en algunos países africanos. Los planes de VW pasan por fabricar unas 40.000 unidades anuales (185 al día) y se ofrecerá con varias carrocerías y motores, además de cajas de cambio manuales y automáticas. Along with the original open and TTX75 classes, the organization has added an eSuperstock category that should open the door to more participation. The rules for the new class allows for bikes from manufacturers with sales of more than 25 units. While the first race will feature four new riders aboard Zero S ZF9s, we hope more will join as the season progresses. Next year, can expect to see brand rivalry heat up with the appearance of the Brammo Empulse on the market. That bike will be unveiled after the race on the 8th in Los Angeles. Like last year, the field for this first race is pretty slim. Both bikes that had been expected to compete in the TTX75 class will now be no-shows and, with Moto Electra Racing sidelined for the first part of the season and Team Segway Racing MotoCzysz focused on finishing off a pair of new machines to bring to the Isle of Man for the TT Zero, the main class will be limited to three bikes. Still, it will be very interesting to see how laps times compare with those from last season. Lightning Motors will two field closely-matched entries, combining the raw speed and power they have always displayed with a much more refined chassis setup. Brammo, which has snagged a sponsorship from Icon Motosports (congratulations!) and whose racing effort will now be formally known as Team Icon Brammo, will be using a smaller, yet more powerful motor and controller from Parker-Hannifin. When the BMW X5 launched to great controversy in 1999, "crossover" had yet to be coined and not a soul on this planet would have predicted that one day BMW would be offering the two-sizes-smaller X1. Yet it hits dealer lots this fall, in multiple models with a long line of options and trim packages. The most basic choice when it comes to the X1 is whether you want a four- or six-cylinder engine. The two-liter, turbocharged four delivers 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque and is available exclusively with an eight-speed automatic, though both rear-drive (X1 sDrive28i) and all-wheel-drive (xDrive28i) versions are available. BMW says rear-drive four-cylinder X1 models can do 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive model is a tenth slower. Projected EPA fuel economy numbers are 24 mpg city, 33 highway, and 27 combined for the rear-drive model and 22 city, 30 highway, and 25 combined with all-wheel-drive. Then there's the six. With three liters of displacement and a single turbocharger, the N55 inline-six makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Available exclusively with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive, the X1 xDrive35i does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, but you'll pay for that power at the pump. EPA ratings are just 18 mpg city, 27 highway, and 21 combined. The real world fuel economy difference between the four- and six-cylinder X1 models could prove to be even greater than what's reflected in the EPA numbers, as the four-cylinder models include start-stop technology and eco modes, which are not part of the xDrive35i package. And before we move on to trim packages, note that there is no manual transmission available in any X1. It's sad, we know. Fortunately for us, the crew at Visual Spicer have worked up a little something special to ease the pain: Behold a 2.5-foot long papercraft Veyron. The project soaks up 44 pages of 8.5x11-inch printer paper and encompasses a whopping 159 parts. Needless to say, sticking this thing together is going to take some time. And ink. The good news is, the templates are entirely free, which means we'll be commandeering the dining room table for construction purposes in sweet little time. Con los nuevos Skoda Rapid y SEAT Toledo en el horizonte, la berlina compacta del grupo italiano corría el riesgo certero de quedarse tirada en el ribazo, motivo por el cual ha sido objeto de una actualización un tanto desigual, más extensa por dentro que por fuera. Las imágenes del facelift, publicadas por la filial turca de Fiat antes de que la matriz tuviera tiempo de lanzar el comunicado oficial, muestran un modesto trabajo de modernización exterior que básicamente se resume en la introducción de nuevos paragolpes (ahora con una calandra de dos barras en el delantero), una nueva tapa para el maletero con portamatrículas integrado y un mayor número de elementos cromados para aumentar la sensación de calidad percibida (un truco tan viejo como efectivo). Mucho más interesante es el interior, trasplantado directamente desde el Fiat Punto. Nuestro turco está un poco más que oxidado, pero por lo que vemos en el sitio oficial no cabe esperar grandes sorpresas en el apartado técnico. Para los consumidores otomanos, el Fiat Linea estará disponible con motores 1.4 Fire de 77 CV, 1.3 Multijet de 95 CV y 1.6 Multijet de 105 CV. | Posted: 04 May 2012 12:03 PM PDT  Report: NYC comptroller threatens Nissan taxi deal over wheelchair accessibility Filed under: Budget, Minivan/Van, Etc., Government/Legal, Work, Nissan John Liu, New York City comptroller, has said he won't register the contract for a fleet of new Nissan taxis until every last one is made wheelchair accessible. There are currently just 231 cabs with wheelchair ramps in the city, though that number will jump by another 2,000 units next year. Even so, Liu said the current cab system is "separate and unequal." The city comptroller signs off on every contract the city makes, but Liu doesn't technically have the authority to block the contract unless there's evidence of corruption. While speaking at his press conference, Liu admitted as much during questioning from reporters. According to The New York Post, Liu may be attempting to draw attention away from a federal probe into his campaign finances as he vies to be a mayoral candidate in the next election.
