El Tata Nano no es el éxito que la marca esperaba. Vendido unos 2.500 dólares, es el coche nuevo más barato del mundo. En un principio, Tata planeaba venderlo también en Europa, pero finalmente se hecho para atrás. En India, su mercado principal y para el que fue pensado inicialmente, está lejos de ser el éxito que imaginaban. Aún así, Ratan Tata, el CEO del grupo Tata, no desiste y planea una nueva versión del Nano para Estados Unidos. "Los Estados Unidos son un mercado atractivo", declaró Tata en una entrevista. "Estamos rediseñando el Nano, tanto para Europa como para Estados Unidos". Añadió que el nuevo Nano sería mucho más sofisticado que el actual, contaría con control de tracción y dirección asistida. También tendrá un motor más potente. Su precio de venta estaría por debajo de los 10.000 dólares, es decir un poco por debajo de los precios practicados por Dacia en Europa con el Sandero. Esta nueva orientación del Nano es el reflejo de lo ocurrido en el mercado indio donde el Nano fracasó a pesar del revuelo mediático creado en medio mundo cuando se lanzó al mercado. Y es que todas las marcas que han intentado en un momento u otro proponer un producto para las economías emergentes han fracasado porque no propusieron un automóvil como tal, sino una especie de sub producto. El actual Nano fue un paso más adelante, pero sigue siendo más bien una "solución de movilidad" que un verdadero automóvil, al menos en términos de percepción por el público. El éxito de Dacia está en haber sabido proponer un coche barato pero con todos los elementos y aspecto que uno espera ver en un automóvil. No cabe duda que el grupo Tata ha aprendido de ese error y gracias a Jaguar y Land Rover tiene la capacidad de producir un vehículo rival de los Dacia. The machine was recently spotted getting a thorough thrashing around Imola, and YouTube user Marchettino was kind enough to grab a few clips of the terror in action. Last we heard, Glickenhaus was considering using the machine for competition in the LMP1 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014. That ambition will require more than a few sponsors, and Glickenhaus has cautioned that nothing is set in stone as of yet. Even so, it's encouraging to see the P4/5 Competizione hammering some tarmac. The machine makes use of a 4.0-liter Ferrari-derived V8 engine good for around 500 horsepower, though a new KERS system developed by Magneti Marelli serves up a bit of additional thrust. Sounds like fun, but will it be good enough to tangle with the rest of the LMP1 class? We can't wait to find out. Around the cost of a few tanks of gas. The standard Prius Liftback version goes up by $200 and the Prius V goes up by between $100 and $155. The price for the Prius Plug-In stays the same (as does the one for the Prius C, we assume, as that model is not mentioned in Toyota's press release). The Liftback version also gets a new Persona Series Special Edition that slots in between the Three and Four trim lines at $27,130 (plus delivery). Based on the Three trim level, the new Persona Special Edition gets a unique exterior color called Black Cherry Pearl (also available in Black and Blizzard Pearl), special badges and 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, you'll find something called Softex on the steering wheel in a charcoal color and a dark chrome shift knob ring. In a random selection, Mark Clemons of Culver City, California was the lucky winner, and on September 18, he collected his prize. After warming up with some autocross action in a Lexus IS F and getting some instruction about Laguna Seca, Clemons was let loose on the challenging 11-turn track with the 552-horsepower LFA. Called the Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication with Carpark Detection Function (catchy, huh?), the technology uses a version of the company's ingenious Around View monitor to detect if the vehicle is in a parking space. If so and there are solid object such as other vehicles or walls near by, the vehicle's cameras will automatically control acceleration and apply the brakes to prevent a collision if inappropriate throttle use is detected. Nissan showed a similar - and presumably related - technology last year dubbed Acceleration Suppression For Pedal Misapplication, but the Elgrand figures to be the first production application of this unintended-acceleration-combating technology. Currently, the technology is slated to debut on an updated version of the Nissan Elgrand minivan in Japan. We wouldn't be surprised to see the system show up in other markets and on other members of the family soon, including the company's gadget-happy Infiniti line. Nissan says Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication is part of the company's Vision Zero goal, which aims to reduce traffic deaths by countering threats at every stage of a potential accident. At the time we reported that the car was being built for a Chinese man of some great wealth and that the $2 million price tag represented the floor for a custom job like this. Now it seems there's been a bit of a development. It seems that the Agera R BLT never quite made it to its intended customer, having been waylaid just recently by Chinese government authorities. Customs officials took hold of the exotic, claiming that the owner was attempting to smuggle the car into the country as a way of avoiding paying import tax on the thing. Now, no one likes to pay taxes, but we're almost inclined to agree with the owner on this one. The source at CarNewsChina.com indicates that the pre-tax cost of the Koenigsegg would amount to the equivalent of $2.35 million - meanwhile other sources in the Chinese media report that the tax-included price of the car is more like 30 million yuan, or $4.7 million. No word yet on what the fine for this level of tax evasion will be. The Agera bust is just one highlight of a much larger anti-smuggling campaign going down in China right now. David Noland, a Model S reservation holder and freelance writer, has dug into it the details and clarified the one he's finding most annoying. And as it turns out, he's not the only one taking issue with the program. According to Green Car Reports, Noland owns a 2011 Chevrolet Volt and likes the service coverage for the plug-in hybrid's electric motor and battery thermal-management system. It only needs minimal maintenance - a $49 annual system check at a local dealer and a $35 oil change every two years. That's $84 for two years of routine maintenance. For the Model S, it's a lot higher: $600 per year, and that electric car doesn't even need the oil change.Tesla's official website says that the annual fee includes an inspection, replacement parts such as brakes and windshield wipers, roadside assistance, system monitoring, remote diagnostics and software updates, so it is more comprehensive. Looking for more detailed information, Noland contacted Tesla's public relations department but reportedly never heard back. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, though, did eventually respond to Noland's questions. "We are matching service cost to be less than a Mercedes of comparable purchase price," Musk wrote. "This basically amounts to $50/month and covers all software upgrades as well as concierge level service." | Posted: 15 Oct 2012 02:38 PM PDT  Spy Shots: 2014 Subaru Forester caught loafing outside factory Filed under: Spy Photos, Crossover, Subaru, Design/Style Last month, we got our first sneak peak of what the 2014 Subaru Forester will look like courtesy of some scanned brochure images, and now we're finally seeing some images of the new crossover out in the open thanks to these spy shots of the new Forester in Japan. These are likely early production build vehicles, and they give us a good look at the newest Subaru from multiple angles, including our first glimpse of a sportier model. The new Subaru Forester is an even bigger departure from the boxy, station wagon-like design that was only abandoned in the model's most recent generation. These pics show off attractive lines and proportions that better fit in with the compact CUV segment it helped create. In the spied images, the front of the 2014 Forester incorporates Subaru's new corporate grille with a stylish (if predictable) new face that is somewhat reminiscent of the first-gen Acura RDX, while the rear styling is instantly recognizable with other Subaru models, especially the Impreza hatch and its lifted brother, the XV Crosstrek. A couple of the pictures also show what appear to be a sportier model with an aggressive front fascia and new wheels with a machined and painted finish. There is also the outside chance that this could be a new turbocharged Forester XT, but that would likely mean the top-mounted intercooler has been moved to a more conventional location behind the grille. Los ingenieros de BMW siguen inmersos en la puesta a punto del próximo BMW X5 y su versión M. De hecho, este nuevo X5M ya rueda por el Nürburgring. Además de una potencia descomunal y unas prestaciones excepcionales para un vehículo de ese peso y dimensiones, el nuevo X5 podría disponer de un airbag para peatones y un nuevo controlador iDrive táctil, bautizado iTouch. El motor del nuevo X5M será el actual V8 biturbo del M5 debidamente actualizado. Estéticamente, el camuflaje está bastante logrado y no deja ver gran cosa, pero no cabe duda que las tomas de aire del frontal serán de dimensiones consecuentes con la potencia y el aire fresco necesario para los intercoolers. Por otra parte, en las fotos se puede ver que el X5 conservará el portón con apertura de doble hoja. In fact, in addition to the (relatively) well-known Aquada amphibious car, we've know that Gibbs has been working on this amphibious ATV for years. And while the company's Aquada got strung up in red tape, its has finally announced that the vehicle shown here, dubbed Quadski, is just about to head into production with a price tag estimated at $40,000. After just quick glance in its wheels-down position, the Quadski may seem like your typical ATV, but the truth is that it is an entirely singular concept. Powered by a 1.3-liter four-cylinder (sourced from BMW) pushing out 175 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque, the Quadski is capable of attaining speeds of 45 miles per hour on land and on the water. Though quite a sizable vehicle - the Quadski weighs in at a hearty 1,300 pounds and measures more than 10-feet long - the one-passenger amphibian is likely to have a significant range/operating envelope thanks to its 15-gallon gas tank. The Quadski can be driven directly from the land into the water; its four wheels retract and deploy at the push of a button. Gibbs is expecting to find a substantial market for the Quadski, too. The company states that some $200 million have been invested in the vehicle's 15-year development to date. Production of the aquaquad will commence at a facility in Auburn Hills, MI, where maximum production capability is expected to see some 20 units per hour completed. Total output for the first year is expected to be a much more modest 1,000 units, however. Official pricing will be announced just a little bit closer to the Quadski's on-sale date, sometime in mid-November. Gibbs expects to open around 20 dealership locations over the next 12 months, focusing on the Midwest, New York, Texas and the southeastern US to start. Despite that, the head of Tata Group, Ratan Tata, says his company remains intent on bringing an updated sub-$10,000 Nano to the States, and he intends to do so in three years. While the Indian market gets a bare-bones Nano powered by a two-cylinder, 37-horsepower engine, Tata unsurprisingly says the US version will have a larger engine, power steering and traction control. "The Smart and the Fiat 500 have high sticker prices, and people buy them because they are small cars," Tata tells Automotive News. "But everyone knows you put a lot of money into it. We hope that the sub-$10,000 car has appeal." With the US economy still slowly recovering, a car for under $10k could have plenty of appeal. But the Indian automaker has several obstacles to overcome first, not the least of which is building a dealer network for the Nano. Tata owns Jaguar and Land Rover, but that group's CEO, Andy Goss, says there has been no discussion about using those dealers to distribute the Nano. Perhaps the updated US-bound Nano will be more like the Nano Megapixel concept (pictured above) we saw at the Geneva Motor Show back in March. That car had a longer, 138-inch wheelbase and a larger 325cc engine supplemented by two electric motors. Poco después de su presentación en el salón de París, el restyling del Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 se hace un hueco en el Spyder. Luce exactamente las mismas líneas y añadidos -innecesarios, en mi opinión- que en la variante cupé presentada en París. A diferencia del nuevo Audi R8, con el que comparten numerosos elementos, el Gallardo no recibió una caja de cambios de doble embrague. Las modificaciones son sólo estéticas. De momento, y tal como anunció la marca, el restyling se aplicará sólo a los LP-560-4. Pero no hay razón alguna, salvo la tímida acogida del restyling por parte del público, para que estos apéndices de carrocería no se hagan un hueco en el resto de la gama Gallardo. Como es lógico ya se han iniciado todas las acciones comerciales y entre ellas podemos destacar los nuevos anuncios para la televisión. La firma francesa ha realizado uno que en su versión más larga supera el minuto, lo que es mucho. El nuevo Clio llega con precios por debajo de los 12.000 € en sus versiones de acceso y la interesante tecnología TCe aplicada en el pequeño bloque de 0,9 litros. De igual modo incluye nuevos elementos de equipamiento no disponibles hasta ahora como son el sistema R-Link y la cámara de visión de posterior, si bien pierde otros interesantes como los faros de xenón. There's an SUV for that. Want something that will make you look extra-super-special while dropping Timmy off at the soccer game? Why yes, there's an SUV for that. Several, in fact. And there's an SUV for just about everything in between those extremes, too. All of this makes picking one single 'ute to rule them all especially difficult. That said, the boys and girls from Motor Trend decided to put the latest crop of SUVs and crossovers against each other in a fight to the death, or at least until the magazine's editors had decided one was better than all the rest. After it was all said and done, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL took home the coveted golden-caliper award as MT's SUV of the Year. Interestingly enough, for 2013, there wasn't a single body-on-frame machine in the running, nor was a live axle anywhere to be found. Clearly the term Sport Utility Vehicle means something different today than it did when the category was arguably defined in 1984 with the launch of the seminal Jeep Cherokee. | Posted: 15 Oct 2012 12:26 PM PDT  Nuevo motor 1.6 SIDI Turbo para los Corsa y Astra Filed under: Opel, Industria, Utilitarios, Compactos, Tecnología, Hatchbacks A partir de diciembre Opel comenzará la fabricación en Hungría del nuevo bloque de 1,6 litros con inyección directa de gasolina. Inicialmente se ofrecerá en los Corsa y Astra con sobrealimentación y sustituirá a los actuales 1.6 Turbo que llevan los modelos actuales. Según ha comunicado Opel, el nuevo 1.6 SIDI Turbo se ofertará en dos versiones. La más pequeña desarrollará una potencia de 170 CV y un par máximo de 280 Nm. La más prestacional subirá hasta los 200 CV y 300 Nm de par máximo, disfrutando de una entrega de potencia más lineal. Lo más interesante es que en relación a los motores salientes, los SIDI entregan hasta un 33% más de par y reducen los consumos en un 13%. Los nuevos motores estarán listos en las gamas Corsa y Astra a primeros del año que viene. Los precios y los datos de prestaciones los conoceremos poco antes de su comercialización.
